To say that the Red Dead Redemption PS4 announcement hasn't gone down well would be an understatement at this point. Announced earlier in the week following months of rumours and speculation regarding either a full-on remake or a more-than-welcome remaster, the reveal of a no-frills port has been torn apart by fans. Priced at $50, it's no real surprise to see people giving Rockstar grief — especially after the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy fiasco.
In order to get a better read on the situation, we published a poll a couple of days ago, asking readers if they plan on buying Red Dead Redemption on PS4. The results of that poll are now in, and it's a bit of a bloodbath.
Over 4,400 of you voted, with a whopping 50% saying there's simply "no chance" of a purchase. A further 14% said buying the port would be "unlikely", while a decent 21% said they'd maybe snap it up on sale down the line.
Just 4% stated they'd be there day one, while 5% said they'd probably buy it at some point. The last 6% went with "Perhaps, but only if it gets big updates post-release".
Now, obviously, those of you who frequent Push Square likely trend towards the more hardcore side of PlayStation — meaning that Red Dead Redemption is probably going to sell especially well based on brand power alone.
But still, it's clear that more discerning fans are incredibly disappointed in what seems to be a barebones port of a beloved game.

Yet, it will probably sell a lot of copies, because it's a beloved game and the internet community is but a tiny fraction of the main populace.
"Most PlayStation Fans..." on Push Square.
It will still sell great. But boy do I hope I'm wrong.
I hope people stay true to their word and don't buy it
I'm not buying it. There's no update or anything to enhance it. I still own my ps3 with rdr 1 with dlc. If I want to play it that bad, save myself the 50 bucks. The ps5 controller won't automatically make the game control better. Smh

Just putting this here to make sure everyone's actually read the article.
Most gamers are stupid and have no will power what-so-ever. CEO was right - the game is "commercially accurate" and will sell well.
Inb4 it sells incredible well. The bigger the outrage the bigger the sale numbers
Own a far better version on Xbox so i have zero need to buy it.
I feel a decent amount of people will buy it just assuming it's a remaster.
If it gets a 60fps update AND goes on sale for $20 or cheaper, then I’ll probably pick it up. Until then, no deal for me. Rather play the great games that are already out than playing this stupid money game with Rockstar.
I'd like to know the stupid amount of pre-orders, which are useless for digital version. I'll never understand why people are so eager not to own a game by buying it digitally.
I voted No Chance on PS4, because if I was going to get it now, I'd get it on Switch. I don't think I'll get much more out of it playing on PS4 than I did on PS3.
Plus the price, zero worthwhile improvements, no online and why not the PS5, I just can't see why anyone would.
It's definitely going to sell well but even if it doesn't, I doubt it will make much of a difference to Rockstar.
If anything, even if it doesn't sell, this will just give them an excuse to say singleplayer stuff doesn't earn.
Just port it all into the second game! I want to continue the epilogue of RDR2 straight into the start of RDR with all the outfits and weapons etc everything merged.
And then Undead Nightmare with RDR2's weather/fog.
Honestly, even if I was jonesing for going back to the game big time, $50 is too high a price point, especially with the fatness of the release schedule this year. It’s awfully hard to justify buying RDR at that price right now when we’ve got Baldur’s Gate, Armored Core, Mirage, Alan Wake 2, Spider Man 2, and more all coming by the end of the year.
To be fair I rather pay $50 bucks for RDR port than to pay $15 per Turtle costume ($60 in total) for Street Fighter 6’s TMNT crossover
Take-Two ain’t the biggest greedy rip off announced of the week
I voted that I wouldn't buy at all - but only because I can play the Game and its DLC on Series X via Backwards Compatibility and as this seems to be a direct port, its not worth buying 'again' regardless of the price.
I may have felt differently had I not played or can no longer play the OG version on Hardware I own - but I see no point in buying something that I already own and can still use.
Got myself the PS3 version for less than 10 Euros. Rock$tar completely lost it.
@ShogunRok
Yeah I read the article.
I also read the Heading.
@deathaxe Agree sir. Baldurs Gate 3 tattoo incoming.
It sucks that's going to sell well because of brand recognition, but it's nice to see that people here at Push Square understand that it's a cash grab.
I’m just…not a fan of lighting my money on fire lol
It’s such a joke. An absolutely stupid and disconnected decision on Rockstars end.
I will buy multiple copies day 1 because these smaller studios like Rockstar who can only afford to directly port their old games need the help from community.
Take that, Rockstar marketing team!!!
Kerpowww!!
Pricing is a little sus, but I'm just glad the game will be available in portable form.
How did that Hogwarts Legacy boycott work out? Oh. Oh. Ohhh....
@Zisssou Good game is still good regardless of how you feel about someone's comments who also wasn't involved in the game's development.
This, on the other hand, is an obvious cash grab from a tech giant who couldn't be bothered to do something that Xbox has had for years. And charging a premium for it. There's a difference.
Maybe...just maybe it puts into perspective in just how Sony handle their remakes/remasters because for all the criticism they get, at least they actually put a considerable amount of effort in.
Honestly i would consider buying it, as i only own ps5 and never played RDR1. The price would have to be in a ballpark of 10euro tho.
Also is RDR1 better than 2? I didnt enjoy RDR2 that much to be honest. I think the same R* design formula is getting really old by now
Utter robbery and greed if there's no improvements what so ever over ps3 version and at that price as well it doesn't surprise me though I've finished it on ps3 so no need to go back and if I ever play it again I'll play it on my ps3 ,you could argue that this ps4 version is for people who've not played game before on any system but they could've made some improvements 60fps /4k etc then they'd not have such negativity towards rdr ps4 ,it also says to me oh look let's get the game out and make money,or maybe the ps4 pro version is 4k ,we will see
I don't want to be negative towards what is essentially a great game I just wish we knew full details of ps4/pro versions
The pricing makes no sense, especially if it's a straight port. The PS3 version was regularly available for under £10. Also, Rockstar ported GTA V from PS4 to PS5 (including lots of improvements) and offered an introductory price, again under £10.
I’m getting it on Switch.
Might buy it on sale for my PS5 if its actually improved at all, idk yet.
Probably the game will sell very well (better than many other games).
And you know what? There are millions and millions of people who neve played this game (me included). And it’s pretty selfish the one wanting to dictate what others should or shouldn’t play.
Keep in mind that Nnot everybody had a console prior PS4. I used to have Nintendo consoles and missed so many games.
I don’t see this as harmful, it’s just a viable option for those who never experienced the game before.
@thiagoauler I think you’re misunderstanding the backlash. Everybody wants the game to be released on current consoles. Nobody is saying that this shouldn’t be released.
The complaints are about the fact that R* did nothing to improve the game, just doing a straight port.
I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect an extremely rich developer like R* and publisher like Take Two to put some effort into improving the graphics, gameplay mechanics, and framerate into a $50 USD ($65 CDN) version of a 13-year-old game that already has enhancements on XBOX.
It’s good that the game is accessible to more people—now that it can be played on a PS4, PS5, and Switch—but for the people that have already played the game, it’s a real disappointment that there’s no reason to buy it, other than the convenience of not having to hook up your PS3 again.
I voted for “Maybe when it’s on sale”, but that’s contingent on the Digital Foundry review of the port. If there’s no substantial improvements to the game, I’ll just play it on my PS3–which I just hooked back up to play something else recently. It would be nice and convenient to have it on PS5 and not to have to put in a disc, but if there’s no other reason to buy it, I won’t.
@thiagoauler Nobody is against that. I don't even know why you're bringing it up. The main problem is the price tag.
Seems to me Rockstar have grown fat and lazy feasting on the bloated behemoth that is GTAV. Everything else gets left to wither in its shadow or is passed on to third-party studios for a quick cash-grab (like they’re short of cash!). After the GTA Trilogy debacle this RDR let down is just another stain on what used to be a premier studio.
People with a Series X won’t buy it. Ya can buy 360 version with Undead Nightmare for about £10 an it plays in 4K. That’s wat i did wen i saw it wasn’t a remake/remaster.
I just find the whole thing so incomprehensible. Almost the entire map is there in RDR2. Marsden and a bunch of other character models are there. They've got all the original dialogue tracks. So much of the work to update it's been done already. Why wouldn't you just go ahead and finish? People would likely pay more for that. And be happy to as well. Madness.
I'll buy it when it's $10 on a PSN sale around February or March.
@thiagoauler You're welcome to buy it at whatever price is offered and play it on whatever platform you want. But many of us think nearly full price is too much to pay for an old game we've played before that has apparently had almost no effort put into it to improve it for maximum performance or quality on the new hardware.
If they were selling this for $10 like Quake 2 is selling for, I don't think anybody would be complaining.
If they were upgrading it to full 4k and including multiplayer capability and adding features to the game (like Quake 2), a lot of people would be okay even with a higher price.
But to do nothing to improve it AND sell it for nearly full price, that's something that won't appeal to many people. You're certainly free to disagree and go buy it if you want to - but I'd strongly suggest you wait another year and pick it up on a sale for next to nothing. If you've waited this long, why not wait a bit longer?
@species It's more dated in controls....think Grand Theft Auto 4 in terms of controls, but having played both, as long as you don't mind going back in time to rough around the edges controls, I liked the story and pacing much, much more than RDR2.
I got bored in RDR2, never got bored in RDR.
If you grab it for ten or fifteen bucks, it's well worth it. Story and characters were Rockstar's best.
@ShogunRok I could accept the game at 60FPS and at €30 but I'm in no hurry.
@thiagoauler No issue against the game but I do have a issue with high price and minimum effort. Look at a game like Demon Souls that was expensive but it looked and played fantastic a night and day difference with the PS3 game.
@danzoEX I rather don't so any of the game and wait for a discount.
It will sell but I'm not buying until a deep discount. Average gamers / consumers won't know or probably care it's just a port. Rockstar is never going to mention "port" in their marketing. If it WAS a remaster or remake they would say that. Greed sucks.
From the trailer it looks to have some upgrading/upscaling with probably better frame rates on the PRO. Something like Far Cry 3 is on my PRO. Will wait for a price drop and post release reviews.
The 'also available on' left out Xbov One and Xbox X & S through bc.
£40 sounds a bit better than $50
This article is kinda misleading as the people who are going to buy the game are the casual audience who sees it and just buys it at full price. While $50 seems high, it makes sense to me given the bundling of Red Dead and Undead Nightmare. Not justifying it and definitely not buying it until its on sale but I understand the cost for the game.
I really hope no one will buy this and we can finally give a big slap in the face of tge developers and send a clear message following the catastrophic GTA remastered collection and now this port 😡 enough is enough
I reckon because I have it on PS3 I should have it for free like I did for Harvest Moon on PSone...I mean Sony do not exactly tell you its free you gotta go looking for it Supported this company(Sony) from the 1st ever console.
