As predicted, the dominoes have begun to fall, and modder Illusion has apparently spent the weekend unlocking the frame rate of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. This joins a rapidly growing list of games that have achieved that glorious 60fps on a modified retail PS5, thanks to their efforts. For those keeping score at home, that's Bloodborne, Red Dead Redemption 2, and The Order: 1886 so far.
Illusion made the announcement on X and shared some silky-smooth gameplay, which again has us wondering what's stopping so many developers from doing the same. Along with Lance McDonald, this bold new landscape in which skilled individuals are able to achieve on console what fans and players have been begging for for years, seemingly in mere days, has to be embarrassing someone in a position of authority.
All the usual caveats apply; modifying or jailbreaking your PS5 is generally a bad idea, with major risks and drawbacks involved. We are enjoying the escalating arms race, however, and can't wait to see what gets unlocked next. Place your bets in the comments section below.

For some reason , I thought it was already at 60fps? Hmm .. looks really sharp tho!
You mean to say ive played this game ages ago and it wasnt 60fps, oh the shame 🤣
@KaijuKaiser even hotter take.. Crash is my childhood but nothing can beat Mario Kart.. I’m not too familiar with a lot of the Crash characters
Please keep reporting these stories. The more we salivate over 60fps gameplay, maybe these developers will wake up. Why wouldn't you want your likely multi-year project running better than ever? If you are producing a current gen only game, it's fine to run 30fps with cutting edge visuals but if your project is last gen... do it, duh. I don't get it.
I have CTR on my Switch, where it looks and runs fine at 30fps... I was astonished to learn, in this article, that it is *not already 60fps on PS5. The fact Mario Kart 8 - a very similar game in most respects - easily runs 60fps on vastly inferior hardware, but Beenox couldn't get CTR to 60 on PS5, is a real head-scratcher to me. Is there not even a performance mode?
@KaijuKaiser
Diddy Kong Racing would wipe the floor with both of them.
That game is crying out for a modern graphical remake.
The title for this article is severely misleading
Here I was, ready to boot my PS5 to update CTRNF just to try it out, and it's not a patch at all but some individual's personal achievement. Although the content of the article would have gotten my attention anyway, this was very disappointing. Shame on you for writing it like that /:
@JJtheTexan the game came out on the PS4, but it should have been 60fps nonetheless…
@4UDIOTAPE
Haha exactly the same for me... I'm sure we're not the only ones
It´s getting more and more tempting to modify my PS5. I wish the developers could implement this. At least like an unsupported experimental option!!
Cmon Sony, give these guys a job and let them do the official PS5 game patching.
They've obviously got a process now so invest in them and see what else these clever people can do.
Amaz8ng how the pirates consistently end up with a better platform experience than paying customers.
People seem to not understand why companies don't do the thing 2 guys in their basement can do. It's simple economics.
Let's say you are a big manager at Activision Blizzard. You see engagement on social media about a potential 60fps update for CTR on PS5. (this is the first hurdle : will your social media managers report this to you, especially in a time where acquisition from Microsoft is going on... this could be seen as some kind of opposition to the buy-out from the employees...).
So now you know some fans would like it. So you put up to the task a planning manager or something : someone who will be able to give you a detailed plan of what should be done to make it happen.
In this plan there are :
All of this will amount in minimum, I'd say, 10.000$ (and this is being veeeery optimistic!).
So then you ask the planning manager if this will result in an increase of sales of the game that could create profits. Most probably not. People interested in the update are generally fans who already own the game.
So unless you need some good publicity at the moment, or a new game in the franchise is coming soon, I see absolutely no reason for a publisher to do this.
I know it sucks, but we gamers back in the day always wanted our hobby to become big, now we pay the price of success with this kind of BS, and microtransactions, and season passes, and so on...
The more pressing issue that needs fixing (and likely will never come) is the broken online. If anyone in the party is playing on PS5 and a person skips the track intro sequence, the race will never start, and there's a 50/50 chance someone will be impatient and skip it. It's bad enough having a low player count.
We should not be highlighting modders on gaming forums
@RobynAlecksys
why not?
I genuinely wish this game would release on PC. I love it.
