Capcom has updated its lengthy list of Platinum Titles to reveal the Resident Evil 2 remake from 2019 is now the best-selling entry in the series. As of 30th June 2023, it's sold 12.6 million copies, which surpasses the game that previously held the accolade in question: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard at 12.4 million units. The remake originally released for PS4 in 2019 and was then handed a PS5 version last year with a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade.
Monster Hunter World remains the best-selling Capcom game of all time at 19 million units sold, then followed by Monster Hunter Rise with 13.2 million, but the top 10 list is then dominated by Resident Evil. The only other IP to sneak into the top 10 is Street Fighter V with 7.3 million copies to its name. The recently released Resident Evil 4 is making its way up the list, currently sitting on 4.9 million units sold. The list of best-selling Resident Evil games looks like this:
- Resident Evil 2 Remake — 12.6 million
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — 12.4 million
- Resident Evil 5 — 8.8 million
- Resident Evil 6 — 8.8 million
- Resident Evil Village — 8.3 million
- Resident Evil 3 Remake — 7.6 million
- Resident Evil 2 (PS1) — 4.96 million
- Resident Evil 4 Remake — 4.9 million
- Resident Evil Remake — 3.9 million
- Resident Evil 0 Remaster — 3.8 million
As a whole, the Resident Evil franchise has now sold over 146 million copies worldwide, but the next instalment out of Capcom remains a mystery for now. Resident Evil 4 will receive a PSVR2 mode in the future — and a Separate Ways expansion focusing on Ada Wong is likely too — but a new game or remake isn't official yet. I am positively shocked that Resident Evil Gaiden for the GBC didn't make the top 10 😂
Jokes aside Resident Evil 2 is for my money the best game remake there's ever been! Well deserved No 1 spot.
Where are the figures for Resident Evil 4?! I don't believe a game that came to every console under the sun before the new remake, sold less than the RE0 remaster. Must be a mistake from the source figures surely?
Now we need a proper Code: Veronica Remake ^^
Well deserved. The best game in the series for me. Intrigued where they go with the next installment.
@pip_muzz It's in at number 8 right now, 4.9 million copies sold for the PS5, PS4 remake. On the Capcom website, the original game is split across multiple different versions so the overall figure isn't displayed.
@LiamCroft yes I gathered it was a Capcom thing but still, strange they've grouped RE5+6 but not listed all RE4 versions excluding the remake as one.
So the two most scariest survival horror RE games are at 1 and 2. Makes sense to me but a little surprising at the same time considering how so many say they prefer the action no scares. There's genuine hope now then with those two at the top that RE9 will actually be survival horror again rather than 4, 5, 6 and 8 nonstop action with zero survival horror. Yh I hate no survival horror in RE games, it's the equivalent of a new MGS game or Splinter Cell game releasing with zero stealth
Probably helps that it's constantly on sale for $20 😂 I almost picked it up myself this week.
Well-deserved. It did a good job of integrating fun action combat with that classic survival horror feeling, down to and including an emphasis on puzzle solving.
Basically what a survival horror game in the modern era should look and play like.
Two best at the top! 2 & 7
Capcom have been on fire with the remakes but hands down Resi 2 is the best.
@pip_muzz It seems like it was done by generations. The RE5 & RE6 sales are from PC, PS3 & 360 only. The PS4, XB1 & Switch ports aren’t counted in that figure.
RE5 is still the best selling RE game with all versions included by a slim margin. Then I imagine it’s RE2 & RE6 (all versions).
It’s a strange way of doing things, but I guess that’s where we are in the port/remaster/remake era.
As much stick as RE5 & RE6 got they shifted a lot of units- most of it on sale probably.
Hopefully we'll get Code Veronica and Dino Crisis next.
Wow, 7 being second is impressive, I remember when it was announced a lot of people across different sites were upset because it was first-person view and had no "zombies". Glad to see it do so well.
Let RE rest for a bit and come out guns blazing with a Dino Crisis remake. Just think RE4 remake but with dinosaurs. Holy *****!
The original RE4 over the shoulder was very rarely ever scary survival horror giving you so much ammo drops for your already full to the brim briefcase and health everywhere for the wave after wave of non scary enemies to deal with, just a very mild tension throughout. Almost repeat every single word for RE5, 6 and 8 and in some cases far worse than the 4th original. Before RE2 remake released I was very sceptical about the over the shoulder it was going with, because before RE2 remake released, all the over the shoulder was only ever used for was in the way more action non scary RE games. Now that I know over the shoulder can actually be scary because of the RE2 remake, it gave me so much hope going forward as a long time RE fan. RE4 remake is a massive improvement over the original
Well deserved for RE2 Remake. Capcom has been on fire ever since they released RE7. Also, RE3 Remake has done pretty well at 7.6 million copies. For a game that wasn't received as well (but is arguably more graphically impressive than RE2), that's really good. Here's hoping Code Veronica gets the remake treatment next (though I think it'll be RE1 again).
It was the first Resident Evil game I ever played! It’s sooo good.
I hope the wait will be over this fall for the PSVR2 mode of RE4 remake, and that they could shadow drop a PSVR2 version of RE7 (a game already designed for VR) around the same time or early 2024, even if I personnaly have played a little too much of it on PSVR. Then, for RE franchise, I think RE9 could launch around spring 2025, but it could be a year later if they remake a Dino crisis game in the meantime, which I think would be a great move.
Imagine buying a video game called Resident Evil 7 and then saying its to scary to play. I don't think I'll ever understand the logic of some people on this earth
I'm shocked RE7 sold that much. It never interested me in the least. RE8 is the same cause i really don't care for first person RE.
Glad to see RE2 Remake take the crown. That is where i want to see the series go.
Next? Dino Crisis 1 and 2 please.
Go resi I still haven't finished 4 remake but I'm getting there
@Nem yh there's quite a lot that didn't care for RE7 in first person but for the many that didn't mind the new first person, they was just happy for an RE game returning to its roots again. It was actually scary again but for some it was just to much after being so used to the watered down very mild horror in 4, 5 and 6. Some gamers first RE experience was 4 onwards so you'll sometimes get a few thinking RE isn't scary at all. 7 was great for those who liked horror and was good for PSVR1
@Brydontk you won't regret buying it
@Nem you can play 8 in 3rd person.
The original Resident Evil 2 was my favourite game when released, when I knew there would be a remake I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed. Resident Evil 2 is exactly what a remake should be, exciting, innovative, stunning, beautifully acted whilst being true to its origins. Masterpiece.
@twitchtvpat I know. But i am not invested/interested in Ethan's story. I already know what happens and i am ok with skipping it.
If they had launched RE8 with the 3rd person option i would've jumped in but now it's too late.
Welcome home Resident Evil. You got out of that terrible rut.
I have a friend that boasted for years that RE6 was the best selling game and it angered me so much because I was done with the game the day the debut trailer dropped.
So happy the best selling games are 2 of the best games in the past 15 years of the franchise.
And screw that trash RE6 lol.
Great game. Its demo is what got me and I am a RE fan since. So glad Capcom started this remake path. Hope they bring 0-1-CV-5-6 too.
Awesome, RE 2 is my favorite game of all-time and though I didn't love how they did the second scenarios, overall the remake was a great way to bring a classic back for old and new players. I do appreciate the ability to move and shoot, even back in the PS1/N64 era I didn't care for the tank controls. Great to see it's sold so well. What I'll be interested to see is if RE 4 remake can catch it. 4 is considered by many the best in the series and that remake is doing some great numbers as well.
@NoCode23 That would be cool, but I'm hoping they do Code Veronica first.
Here's the combined numbers for the major RE games, based on Capcom's data, if anyone is interested.
RESIDENT EVIL 1 - 5.08
RESIDENT EVIL 2 - 4.96
RESIDENT EVIL 3 - 3.50
RESIDENT EVIL CODE VERONICA - 2.54
RESIDENT EVIL 1 REMAKE - 5.25
RESIDENT EVIL 0 - 5.05
RESIDENT EVIL 4 - 12.80
RESIDENT EVIL 5 - 13.90
RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIONS - 3.80
RESIDENT EVIL 6 - 11.10
RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIONS 2 - 4.60
RESIDENT EVIL 7 BIOHAZARD - 12.40
RESIDENT EVIL 2 REMAKE - 12.60
RESIDENT EVIL 3 REMAKE - 7.60
RESIDENT EVIL 8 VILLAGE - 8.30
RESIDENT EVIL 4 REMAKE - 4.90
RE2 Remake still has a little way to go before it really becomes the highest selling entry.
