Hot off the back of the unfortunate news that BioWare is cutting roughly 50 jobs, it's now sounding like Dragon Age: Dreadwolf — the studio's next game — is still a long way off. This is according to Jeff Grubb, who's been in-the-know with regards to BioWare in the past.
In his latest video, Grubb states that Dreadwolf was actually targeting a September 2023 release window at one point, but that plan was obviously cancelled some time ago. He now believes that the RPG — which has been in a troubled development cycle for around seven years — will launch in summer 2024 at the earliest. Grubb goes on to say that further delays are likely.
For Dragon Age fans — and indeed, BioWare fans — things are looking a little bleak. Again, it's no secret that Dreadwolf has endured a lot of internal upheaval, with the project being reset at least once and numerous developers coming and going, but a good showing in the relatively near future could restore some faith. Let's hope it happens.

Well, I am not that confident in current BioWare but still hope DA4 will be a decent game on day.
I blame EA for much of this. From mandating the unsuitable Frostbite engine to shoehorning microtransactions and monetizable multiplayer modes into what should be a single player RPG, it's clear that their constant meddling has had quite the negative effect on the once great Bioware
Would the hype and love of Baldurs gate 3 have died out by then? The only bad thing about it is that every game would be compared to BG3 now, but I'm hoping Dreadwolf would be an improvement on the formula of inquisition.
I mean, did we expect it any earlier than summer 2024? There’s no way it was launching this year. If we don’t get a big hype trailer at The Geoff’s Answer (or The Game Awards, for those of you that don’t get the reference to Brain Structure), I’m suspecting this one’s a long way out yet. It seems like they’ve tried to chase so many trends with this one and stopped and restarted development that I really don’t have much confidence in it at the moment.
I wouldn’t be surprised if BioWare is deflated by Baldur’s Gate 3 on top of that. After coming from two huge failed titles, BioWare is in a difficult spot.
I just can't see this game getting better than average reviews....hope it doesn't have a knock on effect to mass effect
Dragon age inquisition game of the year edition is one of the best games i ever play.dragon age dreadwolf sounds cool.word up son
Considering they’ve gotten rid of the people who made Dragon Age special, not feeling too good about it.
I adore those passionate enough to make us games for a living.
Having said that, I have Zero faith in current Bioware
doesnt look good this and Mac walters long time bioware employee the production director of dreadwolf leaving in jannuary not good
this one will bomb. hard. a bunch of interns have been at work on this game in a very turbulent, uncertain working environment where senior developers seem to be exiting the studio every few weeks. there is no leadership left over at bioware as andromeda and anthem have already proven to the world. i think it would be quite a surprise if bioware in its current form remains open for business after another critical and commerical failure. i suppose you can thank EA for the current state of the studio — it is as if they have set up bioware for failure and just need that final straw to justify (to the old bioware fans?) their decision to shut it all down.
Won’t be done with Diablo 4 by then, but I’ll take a break to play this. I am interested. Still need to make time for FF16 whenever it goes on sale. Lots of good RPG’s coming this Generation so far.
Didn't Inquisition have a lot of development problems and ended up being GOTY?
@Lup Yes it did. They had issues with using the Frostbite engine along with having to cut features because they had to release it on the PS3/360 instead of just on the PS4/Xbox One.
I still have faith that the game could be good when it finally comes out. BioWare is not what they once were, likely largely because of EA, but that doesn't mean this will automatically be crap. Mass Effect: Andromeda is not a bad game... once it got fixed.
This series is a disappointment to me.
Origins was so good and everything after was so bad.
It went from epic hellspawn dragon vs dedicated fallen order to templars discriminate mages. Like wth? Lol
Even this one will likely be ancient elven god vs humans? Hey at least we won't have to put up with more templar and mage drama. Fingers crossed.
Also hopefully healing will be back. 😅
While I have little faith in it, I am nonetheless still excited for this game's eventual release.
Dragon Age is a special series that started with so much heart put into it. A return to form would be great to see and even better to play through. The game releasing in a state similar to the train wreck that was Mass Effect Andromeda would also be hilarious. I think I'd be fine with either.
@somnambulance A very difficult spot. I imagine they're one failure away from EA shutting them down and shuffling their personnel around to other studios. EA has already done it with BioWare Montreal after the failure of Mass Effect: Andromeda. (Fortunately, that story had a somewhat happy ending with those developers being absorbed into Motive, the studio that would eventually bring us the highly acclaimed Dead Space remake.)
@InJeffable I’d imagine that could be the case. I mean, would it be a bad thing if that happened? There’s a lot of talented devs in BioWare that might be feeling crushed by the pressure to release something that exceeds their past while being within the box of the expectations of their past.
