Always bet on Grand Theft Auto V. The game has been pretty consistently among the bestsellers since its launch nearly 10 years ago, and it's now reached an astonishing 180 million copies sold. The UK's physical sales numbers will just be a drop in the bucket at this point, but it's still worth noting the game is currently second place in the chart — the highest it's been for a while. This comes down largely to PS5, with this version of the game accounting for about two thirds of the copies sold.
It actually sends FIFA 23 down a spot to third. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is climbing, up from ninth to fifth place. After dipping out of the top 10 for a couple of weeks, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is back at number six, while Hogwarts Legacy dips a few places into number nine.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 19th August, 2023
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Grand Theft Auto V
- FIFA 23
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Pikmin 4
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Nintendo Switch Sports

Mario Kart 8 and GTA V
The very definition of evergreen titles
@Member_the_game and the more people buy, the further away newer installments get.. at this rate MK:10 will come out in 2042.. still no MK:9 news
I know this is a PlayStation site and all that, but I’m so happy to see Pikmin 4 be in the top 10 for a month. It’s always been my favorite Nintendo series, and waiting almost a decade for a new entry for it to become the biggest hit in the series is cathartic.
Grand theft auto 5 the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.word up son
@WolfyTn
I know I just can't get my head around why people are still buying 9 & 10 year old games.
Not just still buying them but they're topping the charts.
To be fair, thinking about it, I can kind of get it with MK8. The booster pack has essentially doubled the size of the game track wise.
GTA V on the other hand, they just keep releasing the same game over and over with a polish of paint and people are lapping it up.
Absolute madness
Just remember, everyone, that it’s been a few weeks since we’ve had an authentic big release. These probably aren’t huge physical sale numbers for the week. If I recall correctly, Pikmin 4 is the closest thing to a big release we’ve had across the consoles since Final Fantasy 16.
I’m willing to bet Armored Core 6 might actually score first place next week as the first blockbuster to hit in a very busy upcoming release schedule. Really curious if Immortals of Aveum will place in the top 10 or if that’ll be a big flop for EA. At the very least, this top 10 is about to shake up in a big way the next two months.
@Member_the_game your forgetting the amount of kids who have got to that age that their parents will allow them to play a gta game. Even when I was a kid when the first gta came out, it was amazing we could play it, over the years I've watched kids grow up, talking about gta and wanting to play, my kids and my friends kids once you hit that certain age they really want to play.
I had a friend who let them play the game with no sound,
So considering gta 5 is 10 years old, and is now a huge online game aswel. Just think of all those kids coming of age and the inly gta game is gta 5 at this point
@Loamy I think it has a chance simply because it lacks competition. If it reviews well, the hype machine could bolster its sales enough to have 1-2 weeks at the top. Immortals of Aveum is the only other AAA title releasing this week and it had MOR reviews. I don’t think either title would be able to put the fight to Starfield (could Xbox finally have a #1 exclusive or will Gamepass arrow the knee?) or Mortal Kombat 1, but they could stand out in the calm before the storm.
@Bez87
The first GTA and GTA London are probably my 2 favourite games of the entire series.
Although they're clearly showing their age nowadays, there's something charming about the simplicity of them.
I think I was 13 or 14 when the first one came out... I saved up my pocket money for it and my Grandma bought it for me whilst I was at School haha
GTA V will always chart when new content is released in GTA Online because it's cheaper to buy the game again, which includes $2 million dollars for GTO, than buying Shark cards.
No Final Fantasy XVI or Remnant II in the top 40!! Shocking.
@Mauzuri the game continues to sale specifically for GTA Online. There are weekly updates and get at least new "big updates" to content at least 3x a year. I got GTA 5 as a gift and have gotten maybe hundreds of hours in and I have barely touched the surface of the possibilities.
GTA Online is a combination of every game genre excluding. This is coming from a person who is more into RPGs, fantasy, and adventure games.
Also remember, the "average" gamers aren't on sites like this reading up on gaming new and tend to only play GTA or a sports game. For a game to be this strong for over a decade and for 3 console generations is nothing easy and means there's something bringing back gamers.
Seriously, who doesn't already have like 4 copies of GTAV?!
@XboxTheBestBox 100% agree. Its what gaming is all about
No GoW, No Last of us, no Uncharted, no Spider-Man, no GT7, no FFVI, etc why do people buy ps5 for (PS5 hardware is selling but no PS5 exclusives seems to be breaking top 10).
@bighal Are you just trolling right now? Uncharted hasn't had a new release since 2017. GoW Ragnarok was in the top 10 until this most recent report. GT7 is a year and half old, Spider-Man has sold over 33 million copies (across 2 games) in 5 years. FFXVI is a more niche title that has still sold very well. Just wait until Baldur's Gate 3 comes out on PS5 and Spider-Man 2 releases.
@theSpectre No I’m not trolling read what I said before acting like a jerk
I am saying we have had a lot of new PS5 being sold week in, week out. Therefore it stands to reason people buy PS5 to also play PS5 exclusives and none of them are in the top 10, so my question was why are none of the exclusives on Sony’s platform not being dragged up with increased hardware sales. One reason could be the people upgraded from PS4 so not buying them again (or simply getting the digital upgrade where available). Where the hell is that trolling?
No wonder Rockstar are taking their sweet time releasing GTA 6.
Why bother when your 10 year old game is selling better than games released this year.
@Member_the_game yea the originals have a special place aswel for me, I believe I was around the same age, I remember playing the demo for hours n hours.
Literally couldn't believe what I could do in that game compared to anything else I'd played.
London was also a great game.
I was in amazement with gta 2 when they introduced gangs.
So just think we are in our late 30s now and GTA is more relevant now more than ever, and when we were kids its all people talked about playing.
We havent had a new gta or even dlc for gta 5 for 10 years, no wonder its Still selling.
Think about the 10 years since the original.
We had gotten 15 gta related games including remasters and compilations.
GTA 4 was released 2008 that was the longest gap we had before hand.
The major titles came out, 1 to 2 years since 1997 up until 2004 not even counting any handheld games made.
We didn't have a reason to stick with 1 game as we had already moved onto the next within a year or 2.
GTA 5 to GTA 6 is the longest gap we have had, so it makes sense people are still buying.
It must be just the online because in all honesty GTA5 wasn't a great game once I'd finished it.
They hyped the heists up so much but in the main game the heists are few and far between and you couldn't even do heists out of the mains story and the only real heists you did was the first 1, the rest were more story driven than anything.
