In case you weren't aware, the majority of retro games on PS Plus Premium are available for individual purchase. This means that, if you buy them, you won't need to remain a Premium member in order to play them. Playing them at no extra cost is great of course, but if you want the extra security, it's nice that most games offer the option to buy them. Unfortunately, there are a few outliers, but a bunch of them have recently made the switch, and can now be bought.
Spotted by eagle-eyed PS Plus members, Bandai Namco's range of PS Plus Premium classics are now up for standalone purchase. This includes many of the lineup's best — here are the newly buyable retro titles:
They cost £7.99 / $9.99 apiece, which isn't bad to ensure you maintain access once your subscription's up or they leave the service, for some reason. The only downer is that these titles don't yet feature Trophies, but never say never.
Are you pleased to see these games available for purchase? Will you be buying any of them? Discuss in the comments section below.

Great change
Yeah, all of them should be available for purchase. It's a win win for those who are subscribed and those who prefer to own their titles like myself
Prob buy RR2 as Ridge Type 4 looks absolutely horrendous on the big screen.
I've enjoyed replaying the Ridge Racer games as part of the subscription but if I'm honest they were pretty much a one and done as a blast of nostalgia.
I don't feel the need to have them in a permanent collection.
Finally! Pretty amped about this.
I wondered why this is myself. I noticed that any PS Plus Classic that is a Sony game can be purchased but 3rd party games can't be? Great news. It's a shame Resident Evil Director's Cut can't be purchased too.
Now if only Sony could not only manage the same with Capcom too,but get far more of the likes of Capcom,Namco & other Third Party publishers classic catalogues available.
At present mostly seems to be PSP titles, with a trickle of PS1 & zero ps2 additions!
It’s probably worth mentioning that if you already bought these games in the past on PSP or PS3 then they’re available to re-download for free as your licences carry over.
Going to buy ridge racer 4. Loved that game on psone.
Ridge Racer 2 PSP is definitely worth it if you do t want to pay for Premium. I actually prefer to R4.
Does Ridge Racer work with a racing wheel?
Already owned Tekken 2 from the PS3 so it was free for me.
Always found it ironic that some players are terrified about a time when Game Pass will force players to subscribe to play some games when it’s been Nintendo and Sony that make some of the titles in the service unavailable for purchase.
Yea in the case of Sony it’s third parties, but they should honestly not allow that of them. If the game wants to be in the service, it should also be up for sale. Glad Namco is finally listing these for sale.
I always thought all games that are available for purchase on the PS Store have to at least have trophies, not necessarily a platinum though
Now all they need to do is bring all classic games, ps1 and ps2 to the digital store, with or without trophies, at a reasonable price. It's a shame that some games are stuck on those consoles such as Champions of Norrath and the Shadow Hearts trilogy.
YES!! RR4 and Tekken 2 were two of my fave PS1 games and I've been praying that they'd eventually make them available for purchase.
Awesome, great to see that whatever the issue was, Sony and Bandai Namco worked it out. I'll happily pay the money to own RR 2, it's a stellar game and now I won't have to worry about losing it if/when it leaves PS Plus.
Still no trophy support.
@NotSoCryptic I take it you dont play games on other platforms or have played games prior to sony or microsoft's existence? Just trying to understand the rhetoric of having a digital confirmation of what you are doing in a game is so important to the overall experience ??
Cool, I can confirm that the games will be free if you have the old PSP, PS Vita, PS3 version.
@ActionPanther You might be waiting a while for trophies the fact that namco bandai hasn't added them already should tell you something.
@Shadcai I've been waiting for ever for a re-release of Godhand and Tron Bonne on ps store. Champions and the sequel would do well, too!
@Smiffy01
As much as I like trophy/achievement hunting, I'd happily trade it for the plethora of in-game unlockables we used to get. That for me was better confirmation of the progress I was making.
@Smiffy01 many of these PS1 classics are physically still sitting on my shelf, for the most part collecting dust and will in the future all be boxed up in plastic boxes, including many PS2 titles as well. The thing is I can always play many of these PS1 titles anytime I want on the original PS1 or even on PS3 but I rarely ever do these days because I've had my enjoyment fill with them many years ago and also my more modern consoles having huge never ending backlogs keeping me away from the classics even more. Having trophy support added to these classics can sometimes make me want to play some classics all over again, like the trophies themselves becoming an added incentive and maybe a new added challenge. Obviously it's not the same for everyone but to me It does feel super weird these days playing a game on a modern console (regardless of how old the game is) that has no trophies at all. There has now been trophies available on PS consoles longer than when they never existed
@Gamer83 Aye good point, i used to love unlocking stuff in game as a marker of progress, like tekken characters or ridge racer cars (white/black devil) 👍👍
@Beerheadgamer82 Aye i suppose it gives a wee bit incentive but my experience with retro usually is "wish for game, put it on, realise 5 mins later its not what i remembered, switch it off lol"
@Smiffy01
Yeah. Every time I got a new car in Ridge Racer that was improved over the one I was using was a 'hell yes' moment. Really felt like I was accomplishing something.
@Smiffy01 ha that recently happened to me with the Syphon Filter games on PS Plus Premium, not so much its graphics from the time but it's controls. I mean Syphon Filter controls wasn't great when originally released but oh man those controls today are even worse than I remember
Tekken 1 and 3 would be nice. And the original rage racer and ridge racer
I agree about the only downer is the lack of trophies. I'd play these in a heartbeat if they did.
£7.99's a bit steep for these, buy a ps classic and stick hundreds of them on there for 'free' 😃
Most of these were £3.99 on the PS3/Vita. Not sure what justifies the literal doubling of the price. Good that ones you already bought are unlocked on PS4/5 though. You'd never see Nintendo do something that generous.
Just found this out when I was looking to see if I already owned any of the new Premium PSP games. I got Tekken 2 and R4 for free, but Ridge Racer 2 was never released in NA, and I’ve never had interest in Mr. Driller so I wouldn’t have bought it before.
Tekken 2 was actually the very first PlayStation game that I ever owned.
When I bought the original Playstation, I also bought two games for it, many years ago. That was the first console I ever had.
I think the other game was Rage Racer (Ridge Racer 3).
I would buy Type 4 for £3.99 if it had trophies. I suspect it will get to that price in a sale, but no new trophy challenges means no purchase. Come on Namco, give us something new to go with the nostalgia.
I want to buy ridge racer type 4 and tekken 2, but I think I'll wait when its discounted since I'm still playing elden ring.
@RadioHedgeFund Hmm that explains why Legend of Dragoon was free to download and me thinking they were giving the game away for free. lol
Im still waiting on Legend of legaia and Tales of Destiny but I guess one can dream.
Try putting a damn platinum trophy on them
Strange how Xbox has backwards compatibility on their next gen consoles and playstation give out an excuse that it's not possible. Well, it clearly is
I reckon they choose not to rather than they can't. The next best thing would be to make all ps1 - 3 games available to buy on the classic section
At Last they listen, now i will buy Ridge racer 2.
Only Ridge Racers 2/Ridge Racer PSP 2 or Ridge Racer Type 4 sticks out to me. I already own RR2 physical for PSP and got RRT4 on PS Classic but for others to get them by all means what two great arcade racers.
Not Ridge Racer 6 on Xbox is unfortunate though (even if the only Xbox entry).
@CielloArc Not that I've ever encountered settings or mentions of them.
I mean even Type 4 would work with the PS1 Namco special controllers but not wheels.
You could try and see how the wheels work of inputs it sets up (changing the left/right/accel/brake button configs if possible) but it isn't the type of simulator wheels are usually made for that offer wheel settings (arcade racers or kart racers don't really have wheel settings so just go with general controls and you'll be fine).
As long as the inputs are good and you can drift in Ridge Racer PSP 2 your good to go. I mean Mario Kart doesn't need a wheel but they work from what I've seen even if I'd use those wheels with Grid Autosport, Wreckfest, the bike games, WRC or others instead on Switch a platform not really deep with racers than kart racers (I mean if GameCube wheels I'd have considered so for Auto Modellista/R Racing Evolution too).
@Smiffy01 I actually own every Nintendo console made except the Virtual Boy. I was also there for their launches. My history does pre-date playstation by more than a decade.
I also happen to own most of Sega's hardware line and still have those systems hooked up to this very day.
I also in fact much to my discontent every xbox with the exception of Series line.
I've also been gaming on PC since before there was a PlayStation or really a Super Nintendo, Genesis/MegaDrive, Turbografix-16/PC engine, etc. Still have a gaming PC to this day I've been updating it component by component as far back as PCI was a thing and 6 gig hard drives were considered huge. I also own a steamdeck.
Just because I cross platform game, doesn't mean I don't enjoy having virtual challenges to chase after in my favorite games. Including Ridge Racer Type 4 and Tekken 2 which I've owned and still own on PS1 since they released. Even have the special edition of RRT4 that comes with the wheel controller and the shirt. I still manage to play these games on my PS4 instead of my Xstation modified, soon to have a Retro Gem installed, Wireless Retrofigthers Defender controlled, PlayStation.
I have friends too if you can believe that where we compete on who can unlock them the fastest, who has the most platinum trophies (I'm currently in second among the 23 of us who share a discord channel and game regularly together online), we even take them on for fun. FF7 Remake happens to be my favorite trophy list, I didn't just autopopulate on PS5, I went through the entire game again and re-earned them all over again. If that wasn't enough I did it again on Steam. Safe to say FF7 Remake is one of my favorite games.
I've been chasing after platinums on some of my favorite ported/remastered/remade games on PS3/4/5 to add to my score and relive every aspect of the game. It gives me one more excuse to revisit my older games too. Instead of playing breifly for a nostalgia hit. Currently trying to get a platinum on every ff game available on playstation. I just need 3 more, FF12, FF9, and FF5. Not including Lightning returns, because I hate that game, good luck getting me ot play it.
It's not just about validation. You need to get past that.
