Fortnite developer Epic Games is set to lay off 870 employees as it seeks to lower costs, a Bloomberg report reveals. In a memo sent to workers earlier today, chief executive officer Tim Sweeney said the company had been spending a lot more money than it was earning for quite some time. He said: "I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect I see this was unrealistic."
On top of the news Creative Assembly's Hyenas has been cancelled before launch, which is leading to redundancies, it's been a particularly brutal day for the gaming industry.
The cuts at Epic Games will affect roughly 16 per cent of the workforce, and it seems Fall Guys developer Mediatonic has been hit hard. Multiple employees have taken to social media to share they've lost their job, including director and writer Ed Fear. "Unfortunately, I am one of the people affected by the layoffs today at Epic," he wrote on Twitter. "I'm absolutely devastated to leave behind so many amazing Mediatonic colleagues who I loved."
Epic Games acquired Mediatonic in March 2021 off the back of the huge success it experienced with Fall Guys. While it appears to be one of the worst studios hit, Mediatonic hasn't been closed down entirely, Jason Schreier reports. Tim Sweeney said no more layoffs at Epic Games are planned and that those who did lose their job were not part of teams in "core development".
"While Fortnite is starting to grow again, the growth is driven primarily by creator content with significant revenue sharing, and this is a lower margin business than we had when Fortnite Battle Royale took off and began funding our expansion," he explained. "Success with the creator ecosystem is a great achievement, but it means a major structural change to our economics."

I bet all that money they pumped into acquiring(borrowing) major Ip rights from the likes of Marvel and Star Wars, was more than all the lay off yearly wages combined. Seems to have got their priorities mixed. :/
It's a shame the workers are the ones who pay for the stupid decisions executives make. Bribing users with free games and buying exclusivity instead of investing in the Epic Games Store to make it a client people want to use is a losing strategy. Couple that with taking a smaller cut of game sales that didn't filter down to the consumer and it's no wonder Epic is spending more money than they are making.
Billionaire CEO Tim Sweeney goes on an extremely expensive crusade against Apple that he had no chance of winning and they got slapped with a cool $245 Million fine from the FTC.
The response? Raise v-buck (Fortnite $$$) prices and layoff 900 people while admitting the bubble is bursting on live services. Good people taking the fall for the clowns that run these companies.
@JSnow2 hey, they’re the little guy in that battle, don’t forget!
Shame that they were doing just fine as an indie dev before being acquired by epic, now the game sucks and the devs got fired.
Here ends the chapter where Epic bought all the exclusives for its PC store angering Steam users who had no choice but to signup to another store front. Then going after Apple for what they believe was an unfair 70/30 revenue split which ended with their most popular game no longer being on one of the biggest mobile platforms in the world. They never once criticised Microsoft or Sony for having similar revenue splits, it was only evil Apple.
Feels like game publishers have been partying way too hard and long and its now time for the inevitable hangover.
Rocket League Studio was also affected

The one-two punch of consolidation and the games as a service business model lands a knockout yet again. I have little doubt these bright minds will land on their feet and create something awesome. I have even less doubt their brilliant creation will be gobbled up and the bones spit out yet again.
heh…so who were the fall guys ? 💀
@BusyOlf
As primarily a PC gamer, we did have a choice. I just refused to buy any game that was an Epic Store exclusive, even if it came to Steam later. Voting with our wallets is the greatest power consumers have, my friend. Buying a game from the Epic Store because Epic makes it exclusive only encourages that to continue.
Well this sucks. Rocket League is my go to chill game when I only have 30mins or less so I hope this doesn’t affect the quality.
Also, this probably kills the future of Unreal Tournament.
Shame on Epic’s crappy leadership.
@TheCollector316 I don't give a toss on what platform my game is on PC it's digital only so no loss.
It seems that unending growth is a myth and the workers get to pay the price for it. We all know we can't anger the investors they rather fire the workers that make their products.
I fear the worst for Fall Guys, still enjoy playing it with friends and having a drunken laugh trying to even make sense of the chaos unfolding around you.
This year really feels like the year the AAA live service model is crumbling. So many games have been shut down, games are getting cancelled before release. Microsoft’s entry with Halo is suffering. PlayStation’s entries are either in development hell (Factions) or are getting mass disliked (FairGame$). The most successful of the big 3 (Nintendo) doesn’t have an explicit live service and has way lower budget games than the other two. This isn’t sustainable and companies need to realize this.
Absolutely vile what they’ve done to Mediatonic. They were around for years as a web and indie dev and finally saw success only for the suits to buy them and ruin their lives. This industry is totally broken.
I do wish their campaign against steam was going better. I don't really like the idea of pc being so utterly dominated by one platform.
@Deoxyr1bose Isn't Splatoon 3 live service? Or Mario Kart? It's true that they don't cost much, though.
They make so much money off of Fortnite every year, yet they have to layoff so many employees.
For some reason I'm finding a hard time stomaching the idea of Epic spending more money then they're making, and taking it out on the devs of Fall Guys? Shame.
Also I'm still salty they killed off Unreal Tournament the moment Fortnite took off. Bring back UT you cowards.
Fall Guys had a writer??
@naruball eh depends. Mario Kart just had a $20 DLC. It’s like calling BotW live service cuz it had an expansion pack. Splatoon 3 is closer to the idea as it gets recurrent updates, but it doesn’t have any extra monetization except for 1 DLC pack and both that and Splatoon 2 have had endings to support, not in a “this is a failure and we’re moving ship” way but a “this package is done” way
Not only fall guys, rocket league's devs and community managers almost all got fired.
@Deoxyr1bose I was genuinely asking so thanks for letting me know. Sounds like they're not the typical live service games.
Read the room Sony, not even Epic is able to launch and maintain so many of these live-service games…
@Deoxyr1bose Splatoon 3 isn’t a live-service but it honestly gets more and better content than any live-service game that I can think of, plus the recently revealed paid expansion looks even better than the base game’s campaign.
I much prefer paying $60 outright for the game and all its content rather than be milked with microtransactions and all of that BS.
Epic spends millions yearly on nonsensical character skins from IPs they don't own, and on top of that they are offering 100% revenue to those developers who go exclusively with them as a tactic to hurt Steam.
fall guys...i mean comon. When you accepted the job, did you really think it would last forever ?
Always have a plan B in game dev. And a plan C never hurts.
@Papa_Godzilla having sympathy for people working hard to entertain millions and provide for their families wouldn’t go amiss. But no, you go and dump on their work, no worries. Also Mediatonic worked on more than just Fall Guys.
Man, that Shaun Layden's candid interview from after he left Sony... can we call it "the Layden's prophecy" yet?
My guess is they're trying to make some sort of joke, like "Fall Guys developers are 'falling off' the payroll." Typical corpo humor. SMH!
@SegaBlueSky oh i do. but one must also anticipate things and know that a vast majority of online games are sadly short-live.
Just know what you're getting into and have a plan B. simple common sense.
@Papa_Godzilla Then you could have expressed it instead of being purely condescending. Now what - exactly - do you mean by a plan b?
