Sony's really pushing Remote Play at the moment. A dedicated Remote Play handheld machine, the PS Portal, is coming later this year, and now, the functionality is being brought to even more devices. As announced on the PS Blog, those with certain Android devices running TV OS12 will be able to use Remote Play.
To be specific, Sony says the Remote Play app is now available for use on the following:
- Chromecast with Google TV (4K model)
- BRAVIA XR A95L model
Presumably, more Android TV OS12 devices will follow in due course. Android smartphones are also compatible with Remote Play, as well as iOS devices, PC, and Mac. You can play your PS5 or PS4 on a lot of different screens nowadays, and as mentioned, the PS Portal is on the way too.
As ever, whether Remote Play works well for you depends on your connection speed. Sony states you need a minimum download speed of 5Mbps, but recommends at least 15Mbps. The platform holder notes for Android TV OS12 devices that performance may vary, and recommends setting your TV or monitor to low latency mode.

I'm loving this strategy.
Streaming and subs will always be supplementary for me. I don't want to lose consoles or the ability to buy games and have them stored locally.
But streaming is too convenient to ignore, when done right.
Assuming it works as intended, the new Portal accessory is right up my ally in that regards - It doesn't replace my console or promote streaming or subs over physical or downloads. It simply lets me stream what I already own.
Remote play in a nutshell I suppose.
Lovely.
I'm personally going for the Portal. I have the Backbone and somewhat regret it. It has higher latency and the controller is not comfortable. I also think having something take up my phone is just annoying, I can't turn it on airplane mode either because I need it for important calls. Early previews have said the Portal plays better. I'm surprised there's so much hate on it to be honest. As a dad it is going to give me an additional 45 - 60 minutes per day which is huge for me as a I normally only game about 5 hours a week right now. 200 dollars is nothing if it means I can double my gaming time and get through more stuff each year.
I must admit I’ve used streaming to my laptop to play games which don’t need low latency (Chained Echoes). The only faff is having to hardwire the controller to the laptop. And it can be a pain turning the PS5 on when it’s upstairs, but local streaming works really well). I bet BG3 would be another good candidate
@DrVenture69 reWASD works great for using a ps4 controller in Bluetooth (untethered) while running PS Remote to PS5. Love it. Definitely recommend. It’s cheap too $7 or something. They also have a trial.
Wonder if they will update the app which imo is the weakest part of the whole process, i paid for the other ps remote play app and its been flawless.
Interesting, thanks @Damage99, I’ll take a look!
I have what looks like the Google with Chromecast hooked up to my bedroom tv, PS5 is in the living room, but I don’t know if I have a (4k) version. I also have a PS4 on my bedroom tv so I suppose I could just use that? 🤷🏻♂️
I've downloaded and installed the "PS Remote Play" app onto my Chromecast, and it works like a dream!
Paired it with an old PS4 remote, and looks like I have even less reason to get out of bed now that I can just carry on playing Diablo 4 in bed...
@MinotauroBJJ I feel exactly the same way. Backbone was ok at first but the tradeoffs make it annoying to use at times. Excited for the Portal as well!
Just tried remote play on Remote Play app on my iPad - GoW Rag. Playable? Yes. Smooth? No. Enjoyable? Not really due to lag. PS5 is not hardwired, but I do have Fiber 1G speeds.
Interestingly enough, when I remote play, my PS5 turns on my monitor and anyone can see what I'm playing live on the monitor (for me this is a deal breaker). The PS4 did not used to do this (it 'knew' when remote playing to disable HDMI signal). Quick search seems to reveal is a Sony 'error/afterthought'.
@Gator_Rican chiaki and psplay are fortunately far superior alternatives. I can even play twitch reaction action games with no problem over wireless, and my wifi is rather average.
Really highlights Sony's incompetence on this matter.
@Gator_Rican Your Internet speed has NOTHING to do with how well you can use Remote Play on your home network.
Remote Play has EVERYTHING to do with the quality of your home network, including what else is using it (whether for Internet or for cross-device traffic, which is what Remote Play is). Using wifi on both ends (PS5 and remote device) is a big lag inducer. Hard-wire your PS5 to your router and the latency will probably be cut nearly in half - your perception of lag may be cut even more than half.
Well that's cool. Phones/tablets made sense but Chromecast (RIP Stadia) and Sony TVs, not surprised by the Sony TVs side but still. Is it competition with Samsung Xbox app no but Sony has their cloud service project/plans still in t he works so not surprised. It's a start though of TVs or many device getting remote play/cloud over time though.
No longer handhelds but anything with a screen. Play Doom/Crysis on things, remote play to things. Can you remote play on a calculator probably not.
@RobN Thanks for the info. Might give it go, although the fact that PS5 remote play turns on and mirrors my game play (and audio...WTH?) live on my monitor and speakers is a no-go for me.
@Gator_Rican That never happens to me, but that's because I don't have the HDMI set up to turn on everything from turning on the PS5, I use a Harmony remote instead.
Still seeing my Chromecast4k as "unsupported" in Google Playstore...oh well...regional discrimination is still a thing in 2023.
I have the backbone to remote play away from home, but I've only managed to get it working once!
@Shepherd_Tallon Same, my main way to play is and will always be console. But streaming is sure another option to not ignore.
