Let's not sugarcoat it: the new King Kong game, Skull Island: Rise of Kong, is a disaster. The action title is out now on PS5 and PS4, and it's being torn apart by... well, just about everyone. At the time of writing, the game has just one review to its name — a PC write-up from IGN — and that's got a 3/10 slapped on the end of it. Needless to say, review code was not made readily available.
But it's the larger conversation that's particularly damning. Type Rise of Kong into YouTube and you'll be bombarded with 'The Worst Game of 2023' thumbnails. Now look, of course everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon of hate when a new release is particularly indefensible, but this is one of those cases where there's a distinct sense of disbelief over just how bad the game is.
We've seen the (admittedly quite funny) 'Gollum-like' phrase being thrown about with regards to Kong, and that's a pretty accurate indicator of where the conversation's heading. Indeed, the game's being directly compared to the meme-worthy The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which launched earlier this year — and that can never be a good thing.
At this point, it's probably worth spotlighting some gameplay footage so that you can see what all the fuss is about. IGN's posted the first 15 minutes, and sitting through it will make you wonder how the hell anyone's charging $40 / £35 for this thing.
We just can't wrap our heads around how a King Kong game has managed to make the titular ape look and feel so small.
In an ideal world, none of us would have to dump on such a clearly bad game, but it's near impossible to defend something like this when people can go ahead and buy it with their hard-earned cash. Do you think Skull Island: Rise of Kong is the worst retail game of 2023? Let out a long sigh in the comments section below.

Ok so.... I'm sure there's tons of games like this on most platforms (except they're usually not based on a high profile license) but I had no idea this was $40 💀
One step above shovelware, many steps below anything remotely fun to play, it seems like.
Gollum was bad but we now know that there was alot of behind the scenes issues that lead to that. This just seems dire.
They're both terrible but the Kong game is downright terrible.
Yea put this out and look for full price you deserve all ya get 🤣 it's ok I've me 2005 game on the shelf 👍
@BobaTheFett At least the Hellboy game is relatively cheap and looks like the developers made an effort.
There are far worse games than Gollum releasing every year. It's just that none of them were getting the sort of marketing push that Gollum did. That's what made that game's (predictable) failure stand out so much.
@BobaTheFett Exactly. The developers and publisher had to know this was a piece of junk and were hoping that perhaps an abysmal game might get sales by word of mouth as people buy it “for the lolz.” This has to be the case, right?
…right?
@Ainu20 also, the IP? We're talking about TLotR of all franchises.
Is it on GamePass?
GameMill is right up there with Tokyo RPG Factory for bad game company names.
Guessing that developer will soon be no more.
What's funny about this is that it's old news. When this game was given a release date a few months back, it came with a gameplay trailer that ALREADY showed how awful it was going to be. I took one look at it and was like, "What in the hell is this?" But nobody else said a word. Even the article that featured the clip didn't mention how bad it looked. Gameplay trailers usually don't lie, especially when they're BAD. So anybody who actually purchased this game without knowing what they're were getting into deserves to lose their money.
At least gollum wasn't that hideous. It's literally like an end of ps2/beginning of ps3 game in the graphics department.
It doesn't look that bad to me. Seems like your prototypical budget license title we used to get in droves on PS3.
Atleast Gollum had some budget with the voice acting. This game feels like a steam shoverlware sold for $40 lol
"Gollum-like" shall enter my vocabulary immediatly. Made my day
A Gollum vs Kong announcement is the only way to go from here
I... I cannot see any problem? It is solid PS2 game. No Doubt. And in today's era of GaaSes it looks like hunderet percent more fun.
@Nyne11Tyme The PS2 and PS3 doesn't deserve that disrespect. Going on what I have seen so far, this game looks so bad, that it must have been cobbled together to hold on to the rights.
@Gremio108 not quite Godzilla vs Kong but have at it
It looks like the sort of licensed game that studios used to pump out by the dozens in the PS2 era and earlier. It seems like those games all went to mobile for a long time, but now that publishers have figured out that mobile isn’t an infinite money pit after all, these kinds of games are coming back to consoles. It doesn’t look TERRIBLE, per se, but it does look boring as hell. And what’s with the narrator?
Good god it’s horrendous
This is embarrassing.. imagine being one of the little guys working on/testing this hunk of garbage just KNOWING it’s going to be verbally destroyed by the gaming community.. were some designers on this game actually proud of their finished product? I can’t imagine they were smh it’s saaaaad if they were
Please Sony, don't ever give these two horrorshows out on PS+.
@Futureshark Can you imagine? A month that just includes these two games.
(Senator Palpatine voice) "Review it."
I've played free mobile games over 10 years ago that looked and played much better than this.
some people were excited about this when the publisher only releases stinky turds. This reminds me of Balan wonderworld. Everyone was excited even though the first trailer looked like absolute crap.
I’ll forever associate 2023 with it being the year when I played a great Kong game, the 2005 movie adaptation on GameCube
@SystemAddict Yeah it's a bit of a David vs Goliath situation thinking about it. Could be a bibilical retelling
