The current PS5 will be replaced by the PS5 'Slim' at some point in November — rumoured to be the 8th — but there isn't much buzz surrounding Sony's redesigned system. Is that really such a surprise, though? After all, the 'Slim' will retail at the same price, and it doesn't boast any improved specifications — other than the fact it's slightly smaller and a bit lighter. Sure, the fact that you can attach a disc drive to the digital edition is neat, but that's where the marketing ends.
Being rather apathetic about the PS5 'Slim' ourselves, we thought it'd be worth asking the Push Square community for opinions on the refreshed console. Given we're a website that's situated in the hardcore space, we assumed that there would be moderate interest in the 'Slim' from our readers — but that's apparently not the case at all.
Over 3,000 of you voted in our poll, which asked one simple question: 'Will You Be Buying a PS5 'Slim'?' — and the results are telling. A majority of 53% said that they'd only be buying one if their current PS5 breaks, and an additional 27% said they have no interest in the new model at all. So that's a whopping 80% of voters saying they ain't buying a 'Slim' — on a hardcore PlayStation website.
Again, though, does that really come as a surprise? Sony announced this thing with a quick blog post and not much else, so it's fair to assume that the Japanese giant knows it's not a big deal. Like we say, it's a replacement rather than some kind of evolution, despite the physical improvements. Sony's found ways to reduce production costs, and that's basically the beginning and end of it.
Still, did you think there'd be more buzz about a new PS5 model? Feel free to shrug in the comments section below.

You forgot to add a column for "Waiting for a PS5 Pro/Edge"
Absolute pointless upgrade and wa waste of resources imo. Should have waited a couple more years and just released a pro version.
@NotSoCryptic Was just about to say, we're all waiting for a potential pro model. The slim model isn't for us.
As the article notes, it's just about reducing production costs. It's a simple redesign.
I didn't get the PS2 slim when it came out either because I already had a PS2.
This new PS5 is not for PS5 owners. It for Sony to spare money on manifacturing and for new customers. It's PRO version that is for hardcore PS gamers
Majority of pushsquare probably has a ps5. Why would we trade/sell that to buy something that does the same job for more money.
I already have a PS5, so don't really need a new one, but I will definitely get a PS5 Pro if one materializes. If I did not have a PS5, I would jump on the slim in a heart beat. I think the size is better, I like the look, and the ability to upgrade a digital version in the future is ingenious from both a consumer and manufacturing standpoint. The PS5 slim is not getting nearly as much credit as it should as far as design.
I want that PRO. And big titles to implement 4k fidelity mode with 60fps. Take my money
Who cares honestly if you've had the original for awhile now you've gotten use to the size and that, so did sony really expect people to rebuy a slightly smaller version with no improvements. Like moat have said or most likely think they'll wait for a pro version, actual tech upgrade
So no not surprising result at all
"it's a replacement rather than some kind of evolution"
They wrote an entire article just for us @themightyant 😉
@Kidfunkadelic83 I wouldn't say it was pointless. If it means Sony can reduce manufacturing costs as well as reduce the physical footprint going forward, then it makes sense.
I don't think the target audience was those who already have a PS5, but those who plan to get one in the near future.
There is really zero reason to "upgrade" from the current ps5 model.
The only thing that I care about is how this appears to be a money grab situation. Not only are they cutting costs on manufacturing, they are also raising the price. Literally all marketing images show the ps5 vertically but now they are charging extra for that vertical stand and the horizontal stand looks ultra cheap.
And yet 100% of people that want to buy a PS5 will be buying this one as it become the only one available. So yeah... not saying the poll and this article are pointless, but it's as close as you can get without being called Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman
I’ll be waiting for ps5 pro next year
I’m all-in for a PS5 Pro if it ever arrives.
With my original PS4, I was never really super impressed, but found that the small quality of life improvements with the PS4 Pro made using the console more enjoyable. Maybe a PS5 Pro would have similar benefits.
The price, coupled with some big discounts on the OG design in recent months really doesn't make the Slim an 'attractive' option - 3 years on from release when most 'hardcore' gamers already have a PS5.
Yes it maybe more 'profitable' for Sony to release a smaller design 3yrs on at/above the price they launched with, but once the OG designs are sold, then this is the ONLY option for those 'late comers' to the PS5.
If a 'slimmer' PS5 is still costing $500 (with a drive), I'd hate to think how much they would expect for a Pro with any 'meaningful' upgrade. I doubt you'll get 'native' 4k/60 when Some games are running at below 1080p using FSR or TAA to upsample to 4k and still not always hitting 60fps.
The 'only' reason to upgrade from an OG PS5 is really if the OG breaks down. It doesn't offer any other major benefits - unless you are really concerned about the Electric bill and want to reduce your consumption without reducing your game time.
A new model that makes manufacturing cheaper while also raising the consumer price (on the digital edition) isn't in demand for consumers? I'm shocked! Shocked!.....well not that shocked. I'll wait for the PS5 pro and maybe reviews to ensure it doesn't sound like a jet engine like my PS4 pro.
I think the data is just a little skewed since it doesn't separate folks who have a PS5 vs those who don't. So on a Playstation website, of course most folks already have one and won't upgrade.
Well I assume PS fans don't really care about the PS5 Slim because they already own a PS5
Don't care for this and I won't care for the ps5 pro if it ever happens
Why would there be any interest? If you already have a PS5 then this offers nothing over what you already have
@ShogunRok Facepalm — surely you realize that the reason why interest registered so low is the convenience sampling of the survey. The majority of regular visitors to this site ALREADY OWN PS5s. That's why there's little interest in buying a slim.
It's not sexy or exciting, it's a new revision. Only a madman (collectors included 😀) would think of getting the new one to replace the existing one. But it's a good QoL upgrade for NEW buyers, it's smaller, it uses less power and hopefully it is cheaper for Sony to produce.
@darthvirgin Well yes, that's the point of the article — to show that there's quite clearly a throughline. Articles from other websites have been written over the last week or so about how there's a perceived lack of hype surrounding the PS5 Slim, but the reality is exactly what the poll shows in hardcore circles.
I do care with PS5 Slim as I have been waiting for PS5 Slim for smaller, lighter and cheaper price.
I think the battle to get a ps5 for most people was a difficult one. Most haven't had it all that long. Why would they be interested in another so soon?! Now if it was the pro then it may be a different story.
I mean, of course. Why would a PS5 owner care about a Slim revision? The Pro is much more interesting.
Yeah, I don’t care for the slim much. My entertainment center holds my PS5 just fine. Personally, I have hardware fatigue. I may or may not get a PS5 Pro, if it ever gets announced, but I’m honestly quite content with what I have right now. I don’t feel the need to have a constant “next gen refresh” every couple of years.
@Anti-Matter well 2 out of 3 isn't bad
Probably because most diehard playstation fans already have a PS5 and this slim version whilst being very nice isn't really an upgrade.
As I answered in the Poll unless my Day 1 PS5 dies on me there's really no reason so buy this new version
Being a gamer for decades it's always the orignal console that collectors want down the road. If you look at the ps one and ps2 / ps3 slim those aren't the models collectors want. As long as my ps5 holds up its what I will have to the end of this generation. I see no point in switching out even if a ps5 pro did come out I wouldn't no point in having a upgrade for the last 3 years of a consoles lifespan. To be honest I think last generation of ps4 pro and Xbox one x was a one time thing we may never see again. Due to alot of reasons 1. Developers wasent happy having to Develop for 2 each of the same console. 2. People console game for a reason so they don't have to upgrade for 8 years. I upgrade my pc don't want it to be a factor for my console gaming. Nor do I want console gaming to go the way of the apple iPhone were their is constantly upgrades for that one generation of phone.
As voted, I'm only considering it because my PS5 needs to be replaced. Leaning towards getting the normal fat one on sale.
As someone that only plays exclusive games on PS. There is little reason for me to upgrade. I am still going to play everything else on Xbox cause i prefer the controller. However since MS isn’t doing a Pro console this gen and Sony is rumored to be doing so. It’s the Pro that not only will i buy day one but it may just be the first Sony console since the PS2 that i use as my main play everything on it console. Sure the controller will still be the same and that will hinder my enjoyment and ability on some titles. But if it is doing 4K 60 and the Xbox isn’t i am going to follow the power. So at the moment this “slim” PS5 does nothing for me.
Story out of nothing, really ridiculous.
'People who already have a PS5 are the least likely to be interested in buying another one shocker!'
This is really scraping the barrel for a story...
"What the hell is this!?"
This iteration of the PS5 isn't about the gamer - it's about saving Sony some money in parts and manufacturing. I'd bet that when someone does a teardown and looks at the internals, they'll find plenty of cost savings in there. That's why, with inflation still higher than most gamers remember it ever being in their lifetime (I'm old enough to remember 70s gas lines, even if I was too young to be driving then), Sony isn't raising prices again with this model...well, with the disk model...well, with the disk model if you want it to lay horizontally.
The point is, this upgrade isn't about delivering something new to us - but the Slim models rarely were. The PS3 and PS4 slim models weren't better than the originals, just smaller, sometimes with fewer ports, often with lower power usage, and sometimes a lower price. Why does any of that interest someone who owns one already, except MAYBE the power usage?
Why is the surprising? Why would anyone plan to buy a slim version if their current system works fine? It’s not intended for that. It’s cheaper for them to produce this model and is for new installations.
I would go for a slim version I think it looks a lot better and with it being 30% smaller that would be great as well.😁
BUT I just got finally the bigger version and can't really afford to get another so soon 😢
@GamingFan4Lyf Right. It's not pointless at all. It means Sony is going to finally start making money off units sold. Also, it gives any new buyers the ability to "price" themselves in low with a digital edition, and then purchase the drive separately down the road if they want 4k Blu-ray options.
I'm probably one of the few on here that still doesn't have a PS5. I'm planning on buying one this season and I'm just going to go for the best deal, whether it's the slim or the OG model. Probably the OG since I don't want to pay more to stand it vertically. I was hoping a Pro model would release by now, but since that's likely not happening for another year, I'm not going to wait until then. I'm already behind enough as it is. I'll just sell my console and upgrade to the Pro later on, same as I did with my PS4.
I still think there may be slight improvements on the inside of the console, possibly quieter, less coil whine, improved thermals etc once the console is out in the open and the youtube vids start appearing.
It’ll be interesting to how well this PS5 slim digital sales are going to be compared to the OG PS5 digital. Me I’m happy with my launch PS5 and just like the majority of current owners, we’re waiting to upgrade to the PS5 Pro.
I’ll be getting because:
1-I only bought 3 games on disc since the launch (and 3 on xbox) so it really is not a “necessity” for me to have a disc reader
2-the only place where I was able to rent games just stop doing so
3-My friend wants to buy my PS5 so I won’t be paying full price for the new one
But I’m not stressed if I can’t get one on launch day.
@ShogunRok Sorry, but I don't see this specific point articulated in what's written, and I'm arguing that it's the biggest and most obvious point to make. You bring up the hypothesis that since you're essentially surveying people in "the hardcore space", you'd expect interest to be high, but you don't point out that if you're in the "hardcore space" and regularly visiting a site that reports on PS5 news (there isn't much PS4 news to be spoken of anymore), then you probably already own a PS5 and wouldn't be giving a new model any consideration. Also worth pointing out that plenty of the "hardcore" fans are inclined to feel that the "OG" version (absent a Pro model) is the best one to own and that "slim" revisions would be downgrades.
Thinking about it another way, that survey would have been a lot more insightful if it had first included the question "Do you already own a PS5?" (or at leaast included it as a response option as to why you're not interested in the Slim), so that you could make a lot more inferences about how many respondents are even in the market at all and WHY.
I bought the PS4 Slim because it fit comfortably in my backpack and I could take it on business travel. It's a very solid piece of tech.
The PS5 Slim is still too big and, more importantly, awkwardly shaped to do that with. More than anything, I wanted the Slim to be a normal functional shape that fits in standard size locations and doesn't look like it's going to just fall over no matter which orientation it is in. But here we are. No reason to buy one beyond the big guy I already have.
I think it is as ugly as current "stepped on" box, so there is nothing to care about...
Well maybe its not so surprising given that most hardcore or vistors of this site probably already own a PS5 and thus may not have an urgent need to update to a newer model.
Not surprised at all. I mean why would the many almost 50 mil PS5 owners want the PS5 slim when they're more than happy with the current PS5, especially those that have just purchased the original PS5 this year. Its just a refresh, so it makes sense for many PS5 owners to say only if my current PS5 breaks. If you ain't got one yet then the slim will benefit those or you just want the PS5 slim as a back up to your current original PS5. Rumoured Pro obviously a different story. Don't remember any fat PS4 owners saying oh I really need to sell my perfectly working fat PS4 now for the new PS4 slim model
Given this is a website where most people have a PS5 why would you think people here would show an interest? People who did not buy a PS5, for stupid reasons like size, might show an interest, but not people here 🤷♂️
THE SAME PRICE??.....the digital edition has gone up £40 which is a massive jump for a machine whats costing them less to make
Most people don't need two PS5 consoles and so people in here are already sold. The slim is for the new PS5 owners who are relatively spoiled for choice, or the enthusiast convincing himself to get one for the bed room. Why would the slim make a big splash, though?
@Pepsiman_100 .... and surely a long overdue Pepsiman sequel to go with it !
Slim models in the past tend to be better, not as noisy, look better, slight performance upgrade, better built.
We'll have to see if this is the same.
Erm, its smaller and has a bigger SSD, i would say these are improved specs.
I'm just hyped that maybe one day i can afford one
I don’t get why people are shocked at this personally. There’s always been a slim console released after 3 years
@Beerheadgamer82 well no obvs you wouldn’t. But when it inevitably stops reading discs or whatever, would you go out of your way to buy an old phat ps5 or just go to the shops and buy a slim
I dont think anyone thought an existing PS5 owner would exchange their gen1 for this 'slim'?
As you say its not a 'Pro', its just a mid-gen slim. No one swapped their PS2 for a slim, and the PS4 slim and especially PS3 slim were real ugly tree compared to the originals and no one even spoke of exchanging the OGs for the inferior looking slims.
So if anything, based on past results, very few will change for the sake of change.
The previous slim models probably had zero technical improvements either. They were just made smaller to replace previous models. This PS5 should not be looked at as an upgrade.
Your poll could have just been "Do you own a PS5?" Yes or No. I still need one so next month might be the time.
Really surprised at how shortsighted most of you are.
It's not a cash grab or anything like that.
GPU and CPU hardware has INCREASED in price over the last few years, the fact Sony are able to package it smaller is simply because chips although higher in cost are smaller in nm and will run cooler and draw less power hence the smaller package.
Did you want them to keep the same huge footprint and ignore the space saving advantages the cooler chips can afford?
Jeez.
@lindos the PS4 slim was way better looking than the OG, do you have a source for your claims that nobody swapped any of their consoles for slim versions as you claim?
This isnt for the “hardcore”. its to drive up inntrest in buying a shiny new console for NEW players. Any current owner who buys the new slim as well is just a bonus.
Not sure where this idea came from that ps5 owners will spend another 600 to get the same system.
Dant in the image is the coolest thing hahaha
@Mikey856 the current fat PS5 won't be available for purchase soon, they're not making the current PS5 anymore, only selling what's currently left. Eventually the only new PS5 option will be this new slim. If fat PS5 broke right now I'd jump on my PS4 and wait for the new slim PS5 to become available
if sony actually got the pricing right, there would be more buzz. they botched it and charging an additional $30USD for the vertical stand was just icing on the cake.
Another fine article from 'hardcore' pushsquare
@Pranwell I shouldn't be gaming because I believe they've raised the price too much when it should be going down?...
I want pro to be announced soon, not slim
Not sure if this has been said yet as I did not read all the comments. Design... it's the same only smaller. It was divisive amongst PS fans already. Just the fins and the bulge of a disc drive make it (gonna hit some nerves here) a less than cool-looking unit for some. I would be dishonest if I didn't say, that when it was revealed back in 2020, the design kinda deflated my hype just a little bit.
Now it's the same design only smaller and the bulge is even weirder looking. In fact, it looks like the fake ones with all the crappy games preloaded you can buy off TEMU or Alibaba.
But why would anyone be excited?
This is not the slim.
Its just the next SKU coming out which will be the PS5.
Playstation never said it was making a slim version.
So why would they push it because if you ain't bought one yet and will be doing then this is what you'll be buying regardless.
Its not the PS5 Pro which will be hyped because it will sell alongside the PS5.
Cant really get excited about a product which is just replacing the old version.
It's not an upgrade.
It's a replacement.
Every PlayStation generation has had a 'slim' model introduced during its lifetime.
The only upgrade was for the PS4, which needed a boost to properly provide 4K support at the time when 4K telly's started to sell to the mainstream public.
@Bez87 the ps5 is horrendously large, I had to build an entire new cabinet to house the bloody thing (mainly because I refuse to pay ridiculous prices from ikea) but you get my point. Anything that large reduced by 30% volume I’d say definitely makes it a slim, even though as you say it’s not officially called that. Also does it have a larger ssd? Because that would explain the higher price but that’s definitely also an upgrade. I don’t see why there has to be so much negativity about it lol. They are just releasing a revised smaller slightly upgraded model. Why wouldn’t anyone who is in the market for a ps5 go for it, and people who already own one but for whatever reason needs a new one can now bag themselves one of these. Win win
Price nah, other heatsink different versions, disk drive or not. Design, sure smaller but face plate costs too. No interesting design like to fit inline with Spiderman 2 or something else.
Other than being 3 years newer who cares. Family have 2 PS5s. I'm happy on PS4/Xbox One X and retro consoles I'm good with backlogs for either/enhancements aren't something I need in terms of what I play/space to put them, or care about.
There is no PS Portal/PSVR2 bundle included or PS+ free for a week or something (or a PS+ pamphlet reminder in general is there?) like Xbox did for their 2 days or week or whatever and slip those into games/console boxes.
Collectors sure to get one of each model and newcomers that don't own a PS5 yet but otherwise what is there to get excited about they made it smaller after the shell of the last one and tweaks, it's a smaller shell and those tweaks WOW. Yeah I don't disagree with others at all not being excited.
Also besides a Pro discussion why bother if the price for a slim is the same or higher? Who is going to get excited about that and no game bundled either like console bundles can make a difference.
@GamingFan4Lyf It doesn't specifically target me so it shouldn't exist.
I’ve always said I’ll need to wait for a Slim version of the PS5 before I buy one, but from what I can tell I’ll be waiting for the Super Slim version 🤣
In fairness I’m not going to buy one for a few years regardless. I got a PS3 in 2017, a PS4 in 2018 and a Switch in 2023. So I’m well off the curve!
Yeah, I’m not really interested in the slim. Took me forever to get the base PS5 so I’m good with it.
It's just a revision. It's not an excuse to rebuy the console. There is nothing unusual about it.
@Anti-Matter it’s not cheaper though.
@Kidfunkadelic83 If it was pointless they wouldn’t have made it, lol. It simplifies their manufacturing a likely will increase their profits not having to stock two different machines. It’s a smart business decision.
I'll wait for the Pro and hope it's better than what the specs that are floating around already are promising. The GPU looks great but apparently not much of a CPU upgrade which makes little sense with RT.
The slimmer seems to just be the replacement to the fat. It is what you'll get if purchasing a new PS5. There is no compelling new features to raise much interest. OK it is slimmer but still ugly😴. I do think a traditional matte black rectangular design, smaller than the fat, with a 2TB ssd would have received more interest.
It’s ugly! Yes, the normal models aren’t exactly the most attractive, but the way the disc version is designed is ugly. Think people would rather have a pro.
Be interesting to see the difference in the internals from the PS5 1200-series (the latest fat ones) when a Fatboy Slim gets opened up.
@Kraven “hardware fatigue” that’s a good way to put it. I know we are 4-5 years away from the next generation, but I truly think we had reached diminishing returns…. Will get the new Switch bc we will see meaningful upgrades, but I could see myself enjoying this generation indefinitely.
Um...it's not surprising. PS fans already got their own PS5. Slim version is for new players mostly.
🤷🏽♂️ This isn’t really an upgrade for current owners unless they’ve been struggling to fit their current PS5 into a specific spot. If a PS5 Pro ever drops, that’s when upgrades will likely be sought after by more current owners.
