The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will live long in infamy as a terrible game, but as is often the case, it seems there was more to the story than simple mismanagement. An investigative report into the title's chaotic development from German outlet Game Two describes "an atmosphere of fear" at Daedalic Entertainment. It claims the studio enforced uncompensated overtime and attempted to pay staff below minimum wage, as well as creating a toxic workplace environment.
Throughout a 40-minute video called Why Gollum Had to Fail (thanks, Knoebel), Game Two describes where it all went wrong for Daedalic, a studio perhaps best known for point-and-click adventure titles like Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth and State of Mind. The outlet spoke to 32 former and current employees, with IGN's sources at the developer backing up the report.
It revealed that the budget for Gollum was roughly €15 million, or around USD $15.9 million. Most of the staff at the studio had little experience in creating 3D action games, let alone AAA ones, which regularly cost many times that amount to make. With a minuscule budget, the studio could not secure talent with the necessary expertise, and additional funding could not be secured.
Staff were expected to crunch, which has allegedly been a common occurrence at the studio since its foundation in 2007. Employees said that particular pressure was applied to interns and junior staff, who were not as likely to "assess the level of stress as critical or unusual". CEO Carsten Fichtelmann and COO Stephan Harms were singled out as the principal instigators of this corporate climate. Accounts of Fichtelmann shouting at employees who afterwards "only spoke in whispers" were recalled. Daedelic denied these allegations when put to them by Game Two, claiming the company has a "friendly working atmosphere".
And then there was that apology letter post-launch; remember the one where publisher Nacon managed to misspell the title of the game, giving us the gift that is The Lord of the Ring: Gollum? Well, Game Two's report alleges that Nacon used the AI model ChatGPT to write the thing, which is perfect, and that it was published without Daedelic's prior approval, which is less so.
What do you make of these new revelations? Did you ever pick up The Lord of the Rings: Gollum to see what all the fuss was about? Let us know, precious, in the comments section below.

The ChatGPT thing would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic.
I have no problem with them using ChatGPT to write that tripe. Companies never give good apologies anyway, they give safe and non-offensive ones. It's just a formulaic message you're letting a computer write instead of a human.
Also explains why it says The Lord of the Ring instead of Rings in the first sentence .
They could name that investigative piece “Capitalism in 2023: Par for the Course”.😂
15.9 million to make that crap game.where did all that money went.and when you treat people like dirt.karma is coming for you.it aint hard to tell that this game was gonna be crap.i hope they sued them or something happened to them for that toxic work place.a bully is a bully.never be scared of a bully.i handled mine.word up son
The fact that the CEO and COO were at the heart of the terrible work environment makes me sick.
I feel so bad for the developers, I hope they're all doing ok now.
Just when you think the dumpster fire can’t get any worse..
They should've just made a 2D point and click game with Gollum, with the same art as Pillars of the Earth. This is what Daedelic fans expect from them.
The CEO and COO probably descended into madness when they realised how screwed they were after accepting the contract, they probably believed they were Gollum, the lord of the precious.
@PushSquare: Here‘s another documentary worth watching about a gaming disaster, Cyberpunk 2077, and its long way of gaining lost trust with the release of Phantom Liberty:

Absolute madness. Didn’t give a ****. Some of the decisions by these corps have some reasoning behind it (whether we like it or not), but there’s no logic here. It’s almost like ‘hey we’re going under let’s make as much money as possible & burn everything down with no regard to anyone’.
They’ll still be publishing. Any dev that goes with them only has themselves to blame.
As a fellow German I could not be more disappointed. Hope the government steps in as I believe part of the dev cost came from a grant.
I thought the whole game is made by ai 😂
Also I think it will be great if we have ceo that play and understand games at gaming company, so they know what the heck are they making rather than.. this..
I had a long train ride ahead of me, so I actually watched the 40-minute video (documentary, really) that the article mentions. Very informative and well put together.

Amazing how Hyenas got so close to release with a lot more money behind it and this actually got released. At what point do they not just stop and think ‘this isn’t working’ and cut their losses?
I think whoever makes decisions at these companies need to understand that not every dev team is fit to make every kind of game.
Like Redfall or Anthem for example, this was just the wrong devs for this sort of game. I'm sure if they'd make a point & click LotR game or similar it could have been something much better than what they ended up with.
AI really is just a blight, huh?
@Mythologue Yep. Just like computers, typewriters, phones... just completely evil tech. May want to layoff the clickbait articles for a while...
@tselliot All of those things have practical applications.
"The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will live long in infamy as a terrible game"
hah I didn't follow the game post launch but we all knew this was coming from the day the game was announced.
