Sony is significantly expanding PS5’s product portfolio this Christmas, with the release of the Remote Play handheld PS Portal and a couple of new headphone options. One such product that’s setting pulses racing are the appropriately named Pulse Explore Earbuds, which are being billed as some of the best sounding headphones on the market.
Due out on 6th December, these wireless earbuds are designed to dovetail with Sony’s new-gen console, but can be used as regular Bluetooth headphones, too. In a hands-on review, CNET describes them as a “revolution”, and notes that while they’re unsurprisingly excellent for gaming, they’re also exceptional for general music listening.
The write-up stresses that in terms of audio quality, they compete with the Japanese giant’s tentpole WF-1000XM5 earbuds, which retail for around $300. Considering the platform holder is flogging the Pulse Explore Earbuds for about $200, this is a surprising result.
The review exclaims: “I found that they sound clearer and more articulate than Sony's flagship WF-1000XM5 earbuds, with tight, powerful bass. That doesn't necessarily mean they sound better than XM5s, which sound a little fuller. But I wasn't expecting them to compete at all with the XM5s for music listening.”
The appraisal goes on to explain why they sound so good, and it’s due to the use of planar magnetic drivers, which are generally used in high-end studio over-the-ear headphones. “Planar magnetic drivers are prized for their sonic accuracy and being less prone to distortion,” the review points out. “They're typically larger than standard dynamic drivers found in the majority of headphones and harder to drive.”
While it does note that the earbuds are a little bulky to compensate for this technology, it points out that they’re comfortable to wear. The write-up does stress that this is a fairly barebones accessory in general – there’s no noise cancelling, for example, and they can’t detect when you remove the earbuds from your ears – but overall it sounds like the excellent audio quality makes up for the shortcomings.
And when you consider that a couple of years ago a pair of earbuds with planar magnetic drivers retailed for over $1,000, it sounds like Sony has done an exceptional job bringing down the price of this product. Are you planning to pick up a pair? Sound off in the comments section below.

Thankfully they also have a normal name unlike Sonys typical products. I've already forgotten the name of their flashship ones mentioned in the article I read 20 seconds ago lol.
My daughter broke my AirPods and I’ve been holding out for review of these. If more reviews are positive like this I’ll be getting them.
@Stragen8 Yeah, Sony's TV and headphone naming conventions are mind boggling.
I need to know how they work with PS VR2. Regular Bluetooth headsets (except Sony's own Pulse 3D) will have too much audio delay when using in VR.
However, I believe that is no longer the issue with these Pulse Explore Earbuds.
I would like to have confirmation how they work with PS VR2 before making a final decision.
Would be nice to be able to use good sounding small earbuds instead of the 3D Pulse, which can be a bit cumbersome to use in combination with PS VR2 because you need to place those over the PS VR2 headset.
@ThaBEN They use the new PlayStation Link USB dongle to connect to PS5 which is supposed to completely eliminate latency and lag.
Obviously the proof will be in the pudding, but that's what Sony's claiming.
I may be a headphone snob, but whenever reviewers talk about the sound profile and only mention bass, I've read enough.
@ThaBen they will work with VR just like any other non BT headphone. Pretty much the same connection as the Pulse 3D via PS Link.
I was having a little bit of buyer's remorse after ordering these, but this has settled any doubts I had.
I'll give them a go with GT7 in VR2 when they arrive.
They sound like fantastic earbuds - although the noise cancelling on my 1000XM4's was a game changer and has been improved considerably (i am led to believe) on the XM5's - so will be missed in these.
@ThaBEN I can’t remember where I read it but some article said they’re the perfect companion for PSVR2 so you don’t have to wear the bulky Pulse over the top of the headset. So I’m holding out for the buds for this exact reason. The headset with headphones is a lot to lug around on your lid!
Audio experts, aren't CNET just journalists?
@ThaBEN I appreciated the full naming of PS VR 2 at every given opportunity!
This is something I could be interested in if I also buy the PS Portal but I'm more than happy enough with my Pulse 3D!
I'm assuming they're basically just WF-1000XM4 but in white and blue. Good headphones.
Least these seem alot better then the pulse 3d or whatever they're called. I got a pair of them and took them back within an hour they were that bad and that poorly made...
Might have to have a look at a pair of these. Gives me something else to lose 😅
I’m very intrigued now.. was skeptical (and will remain that way until more reviews) but this gives me great hope.. my Pulse 3D headphones are okay but after about an hour of gaming they make my ears sweaty and they can be quite uncomfortable.. not to mention that I have over 500+ hours of gaming in them and I still can’t find the right buttons by memory.. if these are honestly as good as this review states, then I may have to put my new PowerBeats Pro headphones to the side (given they work on my iPhone :/)
I really want these, but they’re so expensive and I already own AirPods Pro and Sony’s own Pulse 3D headphones. I just can’t justify (or afford) another £200 for these. Maybe one day?
Sony understands audio and it's headphones are some of the best around. Glad to hear they're good, however i think Sony make themselves look pretty bad when they force users to use these for use with the Portal rather than the option of Bluetooth buds.
@NeonPizza Agree with pretty much everything regarding vr2,I was expecting much more from the headset and Sony.I do hope there will be a revision at some point in the future,pancake lenses would surely make it a far better experience.
I'll stick with my $35 RIG 400, thanks!
@Pranwell
I have the 55A95L. It is truly awesome, especially the sound.
So, just one audio expert then.
I will be getting the Pulse Elite
New-gen? Dude ps5 is 3 years old. Nothing new about it. Never understand the need to use a term with an expiration date.
This bodes well for the headset that will be coming out soon. Sadly the 3d Pulse couldn't hold a candle to the excellent Platinum Wireless headset, hopefully this next one will be similar to the new buds!
Sounds good (literally)! Time will tell how durable they are compared to Pulse headsets.
@The_Pixel_King
Maybe you should ask Santa?🎅
All seriousness, I’m excited for these. I’ve had my Pulse 3D since launch and it’s time for an upgrade. Glad to see the first review I come across is positive. You will get your hands on a pair one day.
So far my favorite PS headsets have been the Pulse Headsets that was on the PS3. The PS5 Pulse Headsets they sound good but they sound a little too low and the bass isn't deep enough for me. I'm hoping that the new headsets sound louder and have more bass
These would likely be very helpful to me as I went deaf in my right ear very suddenly for unknown reasons almost a year ago now. One thing I miss is being able to clearly hear audio when I'm playing my games.
@koverby Thanks my friend. I know my wife has already bought me Spider-Man 2 and Octopath Traveler II for Christmas, so that’s one avenue firmly shut. And even though my eldest recently finished her doctorate and now has a new job as a qualified clinical psychologist at the Royal London hospital (super proud dad here!) I’d feel awful asking for something so expensive. The only other person (besides Santa himself 😉) is my youngest daughter, and she’s still at uni. I will get them some day though.
I really hope you enjoy them when you pick them up. I’ll look out for any of your comments to see what you think of them! Wishing you a very early happy Christmas!
I am both excited and annoyed — par for the course re: audio. I've invested quite a bit in game audio equipment but it sounds like this will blow my existing setup away. Interested to see if wireless magnetic planar over-ears are the next thing to come out of the Audeze acquisition
@The_Pixel_King
Wow! Thanks for the really nice message. I’ll let you know how they turn out. In the meantime congrats to you all. You must be so proud!
I'll never understand why any Bluetooth device of mine refuses to work with the PS4 or PS5
Sony got to make the $ I guess
@ThaBEN The PSVR2 audio is no different than the PS5 audio, as you're still playing the games from the PS5, so these will work the same as your Pulse 3Ds
@NeonPizza If they're compatible with the Ps5 then they're compatible with the PSVR2, because when it comes to audio they're the same thing. The PSVR2 audio is the PS5 audio
@VaultGuy415 The Pulse Elite's coming out in January are just that. Over Ear Headphones with the Planar drivers
@Snicklefretz $150 is a crazy low price for that
For £200, you have a pick of a pretty huge crop.
I think it's poor that you need these if you bought a portal, as they seem to be the only compatible earbuds.
Thankfully, I haven't bought either, so it doesn't affect me at all
@The_Pixel_King
…so Santa got me (I got myself) the new headphones and the PS Portal for Christmas.
I really like the headphones, but they aren’t perfect. I have 1st gen AirPods Pro, so that’s what I will compare them to. Keep in mind I’m not a professional, nor could I consider myself much of an audiophile, but maybe I do know slightly more than the average bear. The sound quality is good. I’d say as good as the AirPods Pro—overall. There are some real audiophiles on this site though who could probably break that down further, ex. Sony wins in latency and dynamic range, Apple wins in X, Y or Z. Sorry but I’m not informed enough to do that.
One feature that I really like that I did not think would matter is that I can connect via PS Link to the Portal and my phone via Bluetooth simultaneously. I honestly thought that would be too much to handle, but it actually works for some games. In my use case, I can listen to audiobooks while playing Power Wash Simulator for an evening wind down.
Some negative things:
Sometimes it doesn’t connect seamlessly and I have to mess around with the pairing button. There is no rhyme or reason to this as far as I can tell because other times it connects right away. I’m hoping that will get sorted with software updates. Another annoying thing: the case is big and the plastic of the case and the earbuds themselves feels cheap. Nothing has broken, but it doesn’t feel like a premium pair of headphones that cost over 200 smackeroos. The fit is okay for me, but I personally don’t like the sensation of in-ear buds because it feels like I’ve got my fingers in there. The AirPods Pro have the ambient noise feature that I am very used to because it completely fixes that uncomfortable sensation.
I’d give them a solid 4/5. They have an outstanding sound, which is their “one job.” I think for a premium product they could do better in some other areas though. I also grudge Sony for “forcing” me to get them to play the Portal. I think they could have given us Bluetooth support but pulled this slimy trick to sell more headphones. But I can’t complain about that too much because well…I’m the sucker who bought them.
I know you’re just a stranger on the internet, but I hope you and your family had a great Xmas, and that my review is useful or interesting to you. Peace!
Hey my friend. Thank you so much for remembering me and taking the time to reply. That means a lot to me. I’ll read your message properly when I have the mental capacity, but I’ve just found out (completely out of the blue) that my eldest daughter has to have emergency surgery this evening.
She went into hospital this morning with abdominal pain and it turns out she has a 13cm cyst on her ovary. Her mum, sister and myself are unsurprisingly all over the place right now, but I wanted to take a minute to say thank you.
Honestly, I’m sure everything will be fine. She’s 28 and she’s very fit and otherwise healthy. You’re a great person who is clearly kind and super polite. It’s good to be reminded of the goodness in this world during such difficult times. I wish you and your family all the best of luck, love and happiness for the new year. Speak soon, brother. And peace be unto you.
@The_Pixel_King
I am sure the surgery will go well. Hope she recovers quickly!! Take care of yourself and your loved ones in the meantime.
