With the excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 already on store shelves, Sony’s slate is once again looking a little light, as it continues to keep its exclusive cards close to its chest. One persistent rumour we’ve been hearing for a while, however, is that an expansion to God of War Ragnarok is in development at Santa Monica Studio – and it could launch as a standalone title, similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Whatever the case, Spanish outlet Areajugones claims it’s heard from “sources close to Sony” that the title will be officially revealed later this year, with The Game Awards in December being the likeliest venue. PlayStation has revealed major projects during the Geoff Keighley hosted event in the past, and it’s become an increasingly important part of the gaming calendar over the past few years, so that seems logical to us.
We’re assuming this add-on – or spin-off – will focus on Atreus as a playable character, as Kratos’ story largely concluded during Ragnarok’s main campaign. We’d expect this to be a smaller scale adventure, reusing many of the same mechanics and features from the core game, but extending the plot and sprinkling in some new ideas along the way. It’d certainly be consistent with how Sony has handled its other major franchises of late.

Now THESE are interesting news. I hope that they don’t change the general artstyle completely, just improving it.
Interesting, I have no interest in playing it unfortunately though because the new GoW games just seem to be a one and done type of deal for me, hell I even returned them. Especially with Ragnarok and the terrible Atreus sections.
The end of kratos and the beginning of snot nosed Atreus and new main character 😕
Oh yes give me more GoW anytime
@Uromastryx whilst i can see this being a standalone Atreus game, imo Kratos won't be going anywhere as main character of this series. More likely he gets pulled into a new setting for the next game(s)
Excellent, Ragnarok was easily the best game of last year so more content is more than welcome.
omg, just do it for current gen please.
im sick of the too many climbing sections, which mask load times. they are pace breaking and when you beat the game and start ng+, they become even more annoying.
@Rob_230 Agreed! Plenty of Egyptian hints in the last game and even a few in 2018, seems most likely.
Personally i'd prefer a rest to the series and a new IP first. But come back to Kratos and God of War when we want more.
I'd love to see a story where Atreus goes through a rough time, and follows early Kratos's footsteps. Becoming a relentless god.
Or this game being a gateway into other mythologies. I think other religions have their own gods of war. I wonder what their deal is.
Now we are talking. Ragnarok is amazing.
@Blacksmith1985 Yeah that was definitely one of the more annoying parts of the game.
Agree with @Rob_230 i dont see them killing off Kratos at all. It would be like killing off Mario to make way for Luigi lol. Atreus has far too weak a draw to pull existing fans in to a lead character transition. It would literally be suicide for the franchise.
More kratos please and less atreus. I hate the entitled little ****. Kratos should just take him to one side and give him what for.
@Kidfunkadelic83 lol great comparison, i'd even go as far as suggesting it would be like replacing Mario with Waluigi 🤣
@themightyant Yep Egypt would make a lot of sense. Or even Japan - that could be epic - though i guess Sony wouldn't want to cross the streams in terms of setting with Ghost of Tsushima.
I agree, something new should come next and i think thats what Cory Barlog's team at Santa Monica is working on at the moment 👍 hopefully we get a reveal next year
I don't think I'd be interested in an Atreus only game. His sections were not great in Ragnarok so they would need to make some drastic improvements to how he plays before I'd even consider it.
If it's Kratos only though I'd be down. He was still as fun as ever in Ragnarok.
Not a live service? Hell, I'll take it.
Aside with a new God of War to complete a trilogy, I would love to play a full-fledged remake of the original ps2 ones, maybe also those on psp, maintaining the fixed camera angles by bluepoint or whatever.
Personally I would like to see a expansion or standalone game where you play as Thrúd (Thor's daughter) because I felt she was cool, plus I want to use the hammer dammit.
@AdamNovice that could be cool. Certainly better than an expansion playing Atreus lol.
I play, finished and platinum the first game on ps4, but I'm not interested for the second one, already bought it near launch but only play it about 1 hours and kind of lost interest in it. Maybe because the first game feels already done story wise (the quest is complete and the boy finally meet eye to eye with the father) so I'm not interested in the story anymore.
Unless kratos go to other place and fight different gods without the son, or maybe remake of the 1st trilogy but with gow ps4 engine.
Great news, bring it on.
Please don't be atreus
Never finished GOW. Too padded l, slow moving and takes forever to get from one point to the next.
I mean I'd love a new game when you play as the younger generation. I mainly want to play as Thrud and Angrboda and I feel like most GOW players would agree with me lol. Watching them fight alongside you in Ragnarok made me want to try those moves out for myself.
I do want to play as Atreus as well but he's nowhere near as fun as them, at least not yet. So hopefully it's all 3 of them. Come on Sony Santa Montica lol.
If it's a story about Thor called god of thunder that is about him getting fat and what not I'm all in, I suppose another marvel type character in Sony's catalogue wouldn't be a bad idea, what do you reckon.
Kratos was awesome in Raganarok but the Atreus sections were boring and bad in comparison. Easily the worst parts of a great game
@QBGaming12 that would be awesome, especially, hear me out, if you could switch between them at will, with all three characters playing differently and providing the key to different puzzles.
Ugh, let's move on from GoW.
We will see.kratos the g.o.a.t. 🐐 god of war ragnarok 👑.the best game ever made.word up son
@theheadofabroom yeah that would be cool. I feel like after seeing Spider-Man 2 and how you can switch between Miles and Peter, and the reaction people had to Thrud and Angrboda would make Sony Santa Monica consider putting all 3 of them in the game. Switching between them would make it fun/easy too.
Oooh interesting, I hope this is true! Curious to see what will follow Ragnarok
Honestly This Would Be Cool To See Maybe Hint at The Next Big Game in The Series ... Egypt
Already looking forward to Christopher Judge's speech at the Game Awards.
Kool I'm down for this
All for it, I maintain that lost legacy is the best uncharted game
I am surprised at all the Atreus hate. I had no idea so many people disliked him.
I really enjoyed the Atreus sections, and I love the father/son dynamic between Kratos and the boy. Only issue I had with Ragnarok was the boring endgame as it seemed like a pretty significant downgrade to previous game. I'd be down for an Atreus story.
After playing and loving every single bit of GOW 2018, I only played GOW Rag until deserty island, which isn't that much.
I may have fatigue from Sony's games formula. Because the same happened with Horizon 2 and Spiderman 2.
Never was a fan of horizon games, playing the first game for about 12 hrs before dropping it, so having only 3 hrs clocked into horizon 2 is understandable, but GOW was my game of the year 2018..
I also always tend to buy their games day one, but Spiderman 2 is just overshadowed with perfect Alan wake 2 to me.
So all this suggests me that they need to step from their casual formula of open world games with same mechanics to new IPs that dare to try something new with on par amazing stories as they are now.
I could absolutely go for a "Miles Morales" scale God of War game. That sounds wonderful. Especially if it picks up right where Ragnarok left off, there's so many different directions the story could go. It would be a shame to not tap into that in some way. Even if it does end up being on the shorter side
Also, It's kind of funny how we all just refer to these smaller scale Sony games as being "like" Miles Morales despite the fact that Uncharted did this first with the Lost Legacy back in 2017. I guess that's just the power of Spider-man. Lol
A shorter, ps5 only GOW title would be perfection!
I (like many) am not too fond of Athreus, though!
@Tchunga Technically, First Light did this first back in 2014.
@AverageGamer Oh wow, well there you go! It goes back even further than I thought 😅
@Constable_What
His combat didn’t have the weight of Kratos’ combat. That was the main issue with it.
By comparison, Thruud would make more sense. Since her fighting style has that hard to define weightyness that Kratos has.
The base game was already filled with padding.
For me personally God of war 1,2,3 both psp games are amazing. I like the new games but I'm old school & prefer the original formula.
@Bamila I agree, the industry thinks we are all obsessed with open world crap. I want more stuff like Uncharted, the order 1886, the last of us. Linear tight story driven quality titles. Everything feels diluted with the constant open world bore fests.
@OrtadragoonX I get that. That's fair honestly.
I actually really enjoyed his combat sections, and appreciated the variety, but I can see how that might not be their cup of tea!
Sure, a GOW game centered around Atreus where the best part (spoiler) is when Kratos makes a surprise appearance. Remember the blades of chaos big comeback?
It could be an interesting testing ground for how popular the new main character will be, which should be challenging given how much better Kratos plays in the games so far.
Additionally, it could also be a good steppingstone towards evolving the engine to truly current-gen tech.
Because the Norso duology is over I wonder what they will do next. Next gen or not I had no interest in the cinematic angle, hated 2018 (beat the story called it there) I doubt it won't do that again but who knows.
I only care about the setting this time as gameplay wise I'll hate it and won't play it regardless I know the audience appeal and I'm not that audience. Dialogue/themes eh.
I prefer the old ones. Mythology aside/setting I just want more interesting gameplay the third person, strafe, this and that didn't do it for me. There is a reason I enjoyed Valkyria Elysium is it's combat and it's elements focus on enemies. I didn't hate it being 'empty' it suited the setting/situation. Norso or otherwise I have enjoyed it so far.
Damn, I'm surprised it's happening so soon.
Please God yes! I need that. Give me more of Santa Monicas take of Norse Mythology.
I hope it is true and it to fulfill my fanfiction fantasy of how Atreus brings the lost soul piece for Brok from helheim back to get in good terms with Sindri again.
I NEED MORE!!!!
