Developer Insomniac has confirmed which of the two Spider-Men will be the prime Spider-Man moving forward, with the inevitable sequel shifting back to focus on a single web-slinger. Peter Parker took centre stage in Marvel's Spider-Man, and Miles Morales got his time to shine in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Both shared the spotlight equally in the recently released PS5 exclusive Marvel's Spider-Man 2, for which we will be delving into SPOILERS below.
As players who have played through the game no doubt already know, it is strongly suggested that only one of our heroes will continue to don the mask and protect New York City, although it's possible that things could change in future. With his priorities shifting to the Emily-May Foundation and a life with MJ, Peter will be taking a step back, letting Miles take the next step on his own hero's journey, becoming the protagonist of the next game and, seemingly, the city's sole protector.
Speaking to Gizmodo (thanks, TheGamer), Insomniac narrative director Ben Arfmann and advanced writer Brittney Morris expounded on the game's ending, with Morris confirming the move, saying:
"It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen. To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points".
Are you excited to see the beginning of a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Marvel's Spider-Man? How much more of Insomniac's take on the Marvel universe do you want to see? Let us know in the comments section below.

Well, I'm not too happy about that because that means we are less likely to see Peter square off against Norman.
I do not know what to say. MM makes a pretty awesome Spider-Man, but I think he should have his own origin and storyline instead of being intertwined with Peter Parker's. PP is the Spider-Man I look forward to, and I don't think he should be overshadowed in this manner. Sony, you've lost me for your Spider-Man stuff.
This saddens me a bit. Not that Miles is still a huge part, but that Peter isn’t going to be the main Spider.
But I also grew up with Pete as the one and only, so I might be a bit biased. I absolutely DO like Miles, and I definitely enjoy this interpretation of the character so far. Just…really hope this Peter keeps being involved more than this seems to imply.
After this none especially after she called Peter Parker weak they lost me. After the amount of punishment this guy had he we always be the real Spider-man. The disrespect towards Peter Parker is big with this lady.
2 possibilities
1. Miles standalone game OR
2. In Spidey 3, Peter will be killed by Goblin and doc oc......Creating TLOU2 vibes
@Flaming_Kaiser That's true. I don't understand why Sony seems to have so much disrespect, maybe even a little hatred, towards Peter Parker.
Peter is still Spider-Man, he's just taking a break (Miles even says go be Peter for awhile). What they mean is that Miles is the main one watching over New York while Peter is more part time. In terms of story, Peter and Miles will still both be main characters and share the spotlight. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if Peter is slightly more of a main character in 3 than Miles like he was in 2, especially given Pete's history with Norman and Otto, and we also have Carnage too. Both of them will still be playable too! Now, I do think 3 will be Peter's last outing as Spider-Man, with 3 showing how Cindy gets her powers. My guess is that MJ and Pete get married by the end, allowing Miles and Silk to take over. Until then, Peter and Miles are still gonna share the spotlight.
A Miles Morales life action movie is coming and the success of the spider verse movies is probably the main reason miles is the lead spider man now. Sony is probably going cross market the next Spidey video game with the miles morales movie.
Yeah if this actually happens I'm most likely not gonna buy SM3. Miles is cool, I did enjoy him in the spin off but I don't enjoy him enough to be the prime Spider-Man. Hell it will make less sense considering what happened with Peter and Osborn in the ending.
@Nowings I don't know why he gets so much hate if you gave him a decent sendoff so he can be his own man I can respect that but this kid gets kicked when is down by everyone. I think Marvel doesn't even deserve such a character. I see who the writer is and it all becomes a lot more clear.
That's because we will see some DLC, Miles Morales 2 and potentially a silk spinoff where Miles will be the main.I guarantee with Green Goblin as the main antagonist in 3 Peter Parker will step out of retirement and be the leading Spider-Man again
@anon_pel222 honestly i see mj being killed off before peter. Since doc ock knows peter is spiderman he could go after her and the emily may foundation but has no knowledge of the new spiderman being miles
I'm sure Peter is still going to be back at some point in the next game. I like Miles a lot too, but he will always be the Player 2 Spider-Man to me.
Part of me is sad about that, but at the same time, I'm also glad that Peter gets a happy ending. He deserves one, and with how much the comics and movies love to torture him, I'm good on seeing this character get a happy ending or at least a rest.
Miles is great too! I think Insomniac's rendition of Miles is probably the most interesting.
I love Spiderman...but I have to admit... some of these stories don't make being a righteous person or a superhero sound all that fulfilling. Being selfless just for you to lose everything piece by piece until you die in agony doesn't inspire me. Sure there should he consequences for being a super-hero, but there shouldn't be so much to where that idealized version of what a hero actually is, shouldn't be attractive...and using Peter's loved ones as props to hurt him like they do in a lot of the more recent comics just sucks...
This is why people are relating to characters like the Joker more and more, rather than Batman... If you're screwed either way in these stories, and the only thing that's stopping you is morality, why wouldn't you just let lose and go nuts? What good is all the power when you can't save the people you love? I guess that's what recent Spiderman stories love to ask. I just wish more stories would answer their own question in a more emotionally human way. Kinda like the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies did at first.
Yet to buy Spider-Man 2 but I will promise one thing. I won’t by Spider-Man 3 if they got further with this Netflix direction.
I think they’ll just be doing Miles Morales 2, set up Silk (who I know 0 about) then Peter returns in Spider Man 3 to complete the trilogy and face off against Norman & Dr. Oct. That’s what makes the most sense IMO
Well we had a good run. I'm good. I can't stand miles. I wanted to see peter fight green goblin, and the other villians teased. I'm sorry but there's no possible way for miles to handle what's coming next alone.
frankly after 3 spiderman games now they should leave spiderman alone for a few years
@CWill97 If insomniac is smart they'd make a venom game instead of miles 2 and bring in eddie brock.
Yes!!!! Love Miles! Also need Pete and MJ to get to work on Mayday Parker so by the time the 5th game rolls it will be Spiderwoman. Do it do it do it! Gotta say I am looking forward to seeing Miles as an adult as the series progresses. I hope he juggles young adulthood better than Pete does.
Pete has several games, time to start catching up with the comics. There are so many Spider people, and we have seen Pete’s story a million times with a million interpretations. I could use a Jessica Drew game or even Julia Carpenter pre Madame Web. Really glad to see non ensemble games finally really pulling from comics. That was why I loved games like x-men legends and MUA.
That'll depend on the third game. Right now spider man 2 is a slog to get through. Side quests are boring and the story elements just aren't carrying the game. The main quest is just limping along with occasional highs. The jumping between main characters is annoying and I'd be happy if either spiderman becomes the focus of the next game or give me a resident evil 2 solution where I play through as one or the other. The switch mains is lame and I'm kind of over it.
The first two games were really good, but this one is just falling short constantly. Seems to take the worst aspects of the first 2 and puts them front and center. Hopefully this game picks up once all the side mission types unlock. I can't deal with this too much longer.
Its good that Peter is taking a temporary break. As for Miles, as fond as I'm of him, I rather prefer it if Insomniac could also focus on and introduce some other Spider-people who agruably haven't gotten that much attention in Marvel's media outside of the comics.
Cindy/Silk is definitely a good start and I was pleased at her cameo in the ending. I also hope in the next or future SM titles Insomniac can bring in Julia Carpenter (with Julia making her live-action cinematic debut in Madame Web next year I suspect that Marvel will have her for a lot more media appearances afterwards).
I think they've just kicked Spider-Man 3 straight in the balls.
The closer I got to the end the more and more I was blown away by how Insomniac just gets these characters.
Playing all of these games so far has felt like reading Spidey comics back in the 90s. Seeing Peter take all of those hits, hearing his own internal doubts voiced externaly, absolute chef's kiss moments.
If Miles is going to take the lead for a while I hope that gives us the opportunity to see a Spider-Fam introduced in the background. So many possibilities.
Miles feels so boring and pampered as a character in both the comics and in every adaption he has been in. He is not a bad character but he isn't an interesting one, especially compared to Peter who has good and bad days.
I am excited for Silk though, always thought she was one of the unique spiderwomen and spiderpeople in general, due to her design and hero name.
Obviously this time, they wouldn't make her a love interest for Peter, with that weird yet hot spider mating plotline.
Then I won't be buying Marvel's Spider-Man 3
peter will always be spider-man. i never did like the fact of them shoe-horning a discount carbon copy sidekick with no originality in the shadows of the real hero that they’re now replacing & forcing on us . it depreciates the uniqueness and value of the hero & is lazy & wrong . of course ANYONE can be spider-man (get bit by a radioactive spider & magic happens right?) but damn don’t actually make it cannon.
not buying spider-man 3 because spider-man won’t be the main character. i’m tired of this
I like MM in the comics but when it came to the first game I felt he and Peter should be separated, although I understand why Insomniac didn't go that route. I enjoyed his solo game and, over the course of SM2, grew to like him a lot more than Peter who I found quite annoying and whiny at times. I'm definitely happy to take a break from Peter and focus on Miles again.
@RedRiot193 i can’t stand him either or his lore. atleast his gameplay is fun but that’s it
Like omg like. The disrespect, like.
We're still talking about video games, right?
I greatly enjoyed the first Spider-man game, I great enjoyed Miles Morales and, though I haven't played Spider-man 2 yet, I have no doubt that MM 2 will be great fun.
Honestly don't understand why people are so triggered by this.
I TRUST Insomniac to make a great game, write a great story that has me on the edge of my seat, and I have no doubt PP will still be an important part of that somehow. No doubt it will be an epic moment.
I'm excited at the other characters we may play as too, including Silk.
Removed - unconstructive
I found myself switching to play as Peter when I have the chance. Miles did not click with me. He is just boring and they made him too powerful which is double boring
Still, I will play the next Spider-Man, but I will miss Peter.

I think it's set up for Miles to be the main character at the start of Spiderman 3 and then at the mid to three quarter mark something will happen that will force Peter to come out of retirement and take over the lead again.
I really enjoyed miles as Spider-Man but I prefer Peter so that’s disappointing. Was hoping SM3 would introduce Spider-Girl along with them
I get what they were trying to do but it didn’t feel fair to Miles for him to take on all that responsibility alone (even if he is capable).
Pete more than anyone knows how difficult it is to juggle his real life and his superhero life. It felt a bit selfish for him to just ‘take a break’ - even if he had earned one.
Having two Spider-men sharing the job/responsibility made more sense because it would give each of them more time to focus on their personal lives.
I may be coping, but I'm certain Peter taking a break means exactly that, it's a break and he will be back. It goes against his character completely to retire at such a young age. With great power, comes... no responsibility???
@czDante92 That's always been the biggest problem with Miles. Everything he has is from Peter, those electric powers came about as a desperate attempt to make him different. His rogues gallery is also the same as Peter's, the Prowler is basically the one main villain he has of his own (and that's still an obscure Peter villain, but he wasn't getting much use so whatever). If they follow through with this and actually have Miles against the Green Goblin - Peter's nemesis, without Peter stepping back into the fold... ridiculous.
I only need the PS4 version of Spiderman 1. Every Spidey game and DLC after that one didn't interest me at all.
In these games I think playing as MM is significantly more fun. I will say though that the writing and story arc for him in SM2 was abysmal.
This is not natural as the game director states but very clearly being forced. Watch the sales numbers plummet for the new game
I don't know why people are up in arms about this. Stan Lee said himself that ANYONE can be Spider-Man; it isn't exclusive to Peter Parker. And, at the end of the day, it's a videogame; you're technically still going to be some guy in a costume swinging around NY, so what's the problem? Gameplay will remain the same.
I really like Miles but I dont like this.
A lot of the comments point towards Insomniac, but realistically it harks back to the "modern" day direction of the likes of DC or Marvel/Disney or any other corporate reboot eg: Star Wars, Indiana Jones,Doctor Who etc.
Marvel comics went the way of the likes of Female Thor,Hulk, Miles etc. Insofar as the Disney model goes you generally see a insert new character with a usually "broken hero",to make the new hero look perfect & it just comes off as a borefest at best or disrespectful depending on some I.P's that might’ve been childhood memories.
I'm NOT singling Spiderman out specifically as doing anything quite as bad here...but like Last of Us 2 as an example. When I played as Joel going through the university on TLOU & read/heard the clues Ellie wasn't the first bite survivor, nothing in retroactive sequels & tv shows would convince me Joel was "selfish" in saving Ellie. I don't hate on the sequel as a game, but I'll never warm to Abbey no matter how hard they tried.
It's like a generation of kids now regard Bumblebee as Autobot leader....but for my generation a Peter Cullen voiced Optimus is always the leader,Rodimus be dammed!😋
For a younger set,Miles is being pushed as the new gen always Spiderman...I'll still play em so long as the games are fun,but don't do a Disney & tell me every other minute how awesome the new corporate creation is over Peter or you'll just end up with it going all Poochie!

I think Miles will be advertised as the lead for SM3 being in over 95% of all the trailers. Peter hardly making a proper appearance in red till Miles genuinely needs Peters help about halfway through SM3 giving Peter one hell of an entrance saving Miles and we all go nuts. It's like building up the gamer hype tension as we play. When and how Pete returns to save Miles and we all go nuts mentality when he does, I mean its obvious Pete will be in SM3. All about building up the tension to make it far more impactful
Insomniacs Miles is so damn cool, equally like them both
Edit. All guess work of course
Be greater together

This is a clickbait headline and story, and people need to actually look into the source and see what was actually said. The game's director was talking about the progression of the story in Spider-Man 2. Nowhere did he suggest that we won't still be seeing and playing as Peter Parker in future Spider-Man games.
What's the issue with have two main characters? It feels a bit of pandering going on, two great characters who have been part of three great games. I'd probably demote Peter Parker for a portion of the game so Miles could shine but other than that keep both of them
Enter the pander-verse! This type of thing is getting really tiring.
This is huge disappointment. Spiderman (as a Peter Parker) is my favourite hero and I don't really interested in another Miles Morales story. I think that I'll skip the next chapter if Insomniac don't change their decision.😢
As long as the story and gameplay is good, all good. However, if we have to use that hideous end game suit from 2, switching it first chance I get.
Wow you can tell how many people only read comics as children or did their absolute best to ignore the entire spiderverse. Pete hasn’t been the only Spider for DECADES. And Miles (originally from a universe where Pete is dead as a doornail mind you) has been Spiderman for over a decade. Honestly this is a long time coming. Games used to embrace comics and all their different characters. Instead of forcing the same retread a million times. Read the comics, you will be surprised how much has changed in 60 years.
The lack of faith here after 3 amazing Spider-Man games is astounding (pun not intended).
Honestly some people really need to get a grip and grow up.
Full 100% faith in Insomniac to carry this forward and wrap up this story with a third game.
@Ryu_Niiyama I wonder should the Witcher series also follow the books? Or should that be changed because it’s missing D&I?
EDIT: They changed it on Netflix as you may know. Henry Cavill had a lot of discussions with the writers because of this.
Could see it being a DMC type of deal... Miles takes point for the first half of the story, then because of story reasons, Peter has to get called back into action and joins late either 1/3 of the way or 1/2 of the way and you switch temporarily, before being able to use both of them freely again.
Like many fans, Peter Parker is my og, my childhood, etc. so I always like playing as him. But I love Miles too, so this is not a dealbreaker if they really get rid of Peter.
Miles is great, don't get me wrong, but he's just not that interesting because of his whole thing being he's suffers from the same issue as Superman does. He's too OP. Anytime he faces a new struggle, he just gains some new power that doesn't really make sense but means he can now defeat the bad guy. Whereas Peter Parker on the other hand is drenched in lore and personal struggle. He doesn't really just "gain new powers" in order to beat the bad guys that momentarily overpower him, and if he does it's never permanent and usually just blows up in his face. He has to use his wits and brainpower to think his way around problems. He's just more interesting.
This also sucks cuz it means so many storylines we will never see play out now. This wasn't what I was hoping to see so I'm probably out now, but I hope Insomniac can think up something cool in order to keep everyone else interested going forward past the Venom spinoff.
Am I in the minority with REALLY wanting Insomniac to stop making marvel games (at the very least, spiderkid).
Anyone who played the game saw that writing on the wall and even MJ could use a little more Peter and a little less Spider Man. (No pun intended)
@Highlander77 THANK YOU! Also if Peter was never gonna be playable again and if he was truly retired, they would've made it abundantly clear!
The real move would be to bring Spider-Gwen into the mix.
Lol no, I'll buy spider-man because I want to play peter parker story, I don't care about miles, he's okay as supporting characters but I'm not spending $70 to play as him.
It's really hard to see western games story and not thinking, "do this game story is made for players, or for esg/dei score so publishers can get more blackrock money" 😕
I'm glad I'm mostly play retro games now.
good luck Insomniac. Ask Naughty Dog what happens if you want to replace the original MC. There's a reason why Sony Santa Monica won't even consider making a GoW without Kratos.
hopefully Sony will intervene here. I think the last thing Sony wants is for this money cow to be ruined.
@themightyant let's be real. A lot of them (not all, obviously) are triggered because they don't want to see a black character replacing a white one. They don't want to admit it, so they phrase it differently. Others are "anti-woke" and then there are those who really like Peter Parker. The last group lived happily without his existence in (good) video games before but now the thought that he may not appear in a single game makes them furious. Go figure.
@naruball imagine the character replacement u mentioned was reversed, the "triggering" would be on a whole new level. But that would be ok though right?
Well there goes my interest in this series.
My interest in series is gone as miles morales game was trash story and characters
I don't think it will happen. Maybe at the start of the 3rd game this well may be the case, but I feel we could end up seeing a closer link to altered dimensions and that's where Miles will be taken, with Peter forcibly having to take up the mantle with Moon to protect the city against Norman. While Miles is jumping around time and inevitably meeting Gwen.
There is just still too much story that directly links it to Peter.
Norman, Carnage and Osborne have all been present in the final parts and Peter is a huge part of that.
I hate to be a cynic, but in all honesty, neither of these characters are interesting. Seriously. The best characters in SM were the villains. And just the villains.
As far as I'm concerned, they're effectively replacing a cardboard box with a ream of printing paper (or vice versa, whatever). Why does anyone even care about this?
@czDante92 When you start off with " I have nothing against Miles" and then in turn call him an "ethnic" copy......ya ok
I'm not the biggest spiderman fan but I grew up watching the 90's animated series and quite enjoyed most of the movies but I've always been more of a batman guy myself.
Another superhero I've always liked is wolverine and seeing how insomniac and Sony are doing things, I don't trust them with wolverine and my excitement is pretty much dead for the upcoming game.
They'll end up doing something stupid to the story or his character because these "enlightened" writers and developers can't help themselves no matter how much they annoy the fans.
I really loved Miles in the game. After liking him previously in the past 2 games, I really loved him in this. I do wish we got more from Peter's story. It's great they started it with him some years into being Spider-Man, but we didn't get to see enough. Then he was absent, then he was unsure of himself and in peril. I've liked the stories and character arcs, but wish we got more from him.
I hope we get a Miles 2 of him sort of cementing himself being capable as a solo Spider-Man, and then a 3 game where Peter comes back after the Goblin emerges. And then we get Carnage and Goblin and, in the end, Red Goblin. I'd love that!
Amazing game and very moving though! I love the series and the love out in! Can't wait for DLC (possibly Chameleon)!
Come on all, there is no way Peter isn't coming back for Spiderman 3. Once Norman becomes GG, and Doc Ock is back on the loose, Miles will need help, and Peter (and possibly another character introduced through wolverine) will be back to help.
Funnily enough i feel the opposite to many. I used to have little time for MM, but ive increasingly found him a relatable character - particularly since the spiderverse movies, and i think insomniac has done a great job with the character.
But yes Peter will be back. Give insomniac a chance before writing them off
