Capcom has announced the long-awaited PSVR2 mode for Resident Evil 4 will be available for free next week on 8th December 2023. You'll be able to play the entire main story from the first-person perspective using Sony's VR headset, and a free PSVR2 demo will go live on the PS Store on the same day for anyone to try out. It'll grant you access to the opening moments of the game. Check out the new trailer above.
On the PlayStation Blog, it's revealed the Sense controllers will offer haptic feedback across every weapon in the game, all of which have been adapted from the original PS5, PS4 remake for flat screens. "Combined with the intuitive feel of aiming and shooting in VR, the combat experience is more visceral than ever before," said PR manager Kyle Burleson.

A lot of people complain about the psvr2 line up, but it's been pretty solid if they can get the price lowered it would help a lot.
That looks incredible!
Looks amazing. I wasn't expecting it so soon.
I wonder if the shooting ranges are easier in VR 🤔
Baffling how there where no decent psvr 2 black Friday deal. (unless I missed them)
Yes, sooner than I though when they last annonced "this winter". Glad that past the initial village sequence, I have put the game on hold in wait for this mode.
While you're at it, could you release the PSVR2 update for RE7 that you certainly have been working on, for a game already created for VR in mind?
This and the original RE4 VR are two games I genuinely wish would be on the PCVR.
Finally. I've been waiting for a release date for this.
Yes, and it’ll be fantastic. res7 and 8 in VR are some of the best gaming experiences ever made. However, will this one allow you to play the trophy campaign? If not it’ll be one and done for me, if that.
@Deadlyblack I believe there's a mod somebody made that makes the original playable in VR on PC. Haven't played it myself but a guy on my Steam friend list mentioned it.
Wonder if the DLC is playable in VR too. I dont have a VR2 anymore but was just interested.
@RubyCarbuncle Oh really? I'll have to check it out once.
If it’s as well put together as 7 & 8, it’s going to be another amazing VR game. The essential way to play Resident Evil games these days.
This is the game that’s forcing my mate to get VR2 lol
@Shepherd_Tallon everything is easier in VR, imo. I am so excited!
Will it have trophy support ? Known or not known ...
@AndyKazama right!? I was looking out for it as well, but I don't think Sony wants to sell any units.
If Sony would open psvr2 for pc use I would even consider it at the given price, but at the moment meta quest (though I despise meta) with it's wireless pc game streaming sounds more and more viable. Was surprised digital foundry said it actually works well (unlike PS Portal)
Best fire up the VR2 then
I'll get it if they release a better headset later down the line
So looking forward to this, village was brilliant in psvr2, changed the game for me.
Can't believe they are dropping it the day after Arizona sunshine 2 comes out! Then we get Vertigo 2 followed by help wanted 2! What a great month for the system!
This looks really intense … and fantastic! If there is just one PSVR2 game per year on that level, I would be totally happy with my goggles.
I’m so hyped for this! Based on how awesome the Village port was, it looks like it’s going to be absolutely outstanding and quite possibly a high water mark for VR. It’s incredible that we’re getting a full VR port of a GOTY contender in the year of its release. I hope it gets the attention it deserves as a system-seller for PSVR2.
Just got RE4 on black friday in preparation for this, perfect timing Capgod!!!
@tameshiyaku Sony are probably making PSVR 2 at a loss or minimum profit. They will make money from the purchase of games on their store. They gain nothing by opening it up to PC I think.
@NeonPizza @hookedWORM17
Tell you what I'm most excited for?
When I was 13, waaaay back in 1996, my cousin got a PS1 for Christmas. I was still playing Micro Machines Turbo Tournament 96 on the Mega Drive at the time and had no appreciation for what I was missing out on.
So that Christmas morning at about 11ish he rocks over with his brand new PS1 and what turns out to be OG Resident Evil.
We had never played anything like it at that point.
So he's giggling as he plugs out my Mega Drive and plugs in his PS1, then loads a save and directs me towards this corridor, you know the one where the dogs jump in through the window? All the while he's telling me nothing will happen and there's something cool he wants me to see at the end of the corridor.
Let me tell you in 1996 when those dogs attacked that almost made me wet my pants.
He laughed his ass off, turned the PS1 off, plugged it out and fecked off home.
I've been waiting a long time for revenge.
I just invited him to bring his kids over at some point over Christmas and sent him the trailer for RE4 VR at the same time...
😈
@Hoodie718 @Kidfunkadelic83 the same, already had it downloaded but had tempered my expectations until the new for a release. This is great news, can't wait.
@Mikey856 make sure he checks out Village then too. I'm sure he will dig it if he's hyped for this.
@Kidfunkadelic83 no, just main campaign is in VR...at least for now.
@NeonPizza Whoa, you're describing a $2.000 headset there, especially with the micro-OLED. Maybe by the end of the decade but, for now, I must say I'm more than happy with my PSVR2. I think it makes the right compromises.
Looks amazing 👏
@NeonPizza Lol... you echoed my sentiments just about perfectly
For those of us who are able to enjoy VR and can afford the luxury of a PSVR2... this is going to be one of the sweetest gaming experiences in the history of gaming. THIS is what I purchased the headset for. And as great as RE Village VR is, I think RE4 Remake VR is going to top it in every way.
Just bought this on the Black Friday sale knowing the VR mode was coming at some point. SO HYPED. I only played through the OG once about 10 years ago so I've forgotten most of it and wanted to go into the remake cold.
This was my cousin's (one of my best friends) favorite game of all time and he passed away suddenly 2 weeks ago so he was never able to play this mode. Was looking forward to exchanging hype with him but alas...My playthrough is dedicated to him. THIS IS FOR YOU, STEVE! LETS GOOOOOO!!!
On another note, so grateful for Capcom and thier PSVR2 support since clearly Sony hates the dang thing.
@NeonPizza but oleds don't work with pancake lenses as there not bright enough.Would you get rid of the psvr2 blacks for quest 3's greys and the lack of hdr?Well I've got a q3 as well as a psvr2 and pancake lenses are the best but I hate the lcd panels so so much.Every headset at a budget is a compromise its just which compromise do you prefer?
@Art_Vandelay I agree. I recently went to one of those "cutting edge" VR experience stores where they have you pay $60 per head to go through a level with team mates in full body tracking. It was fun but I got a look into just how incredibly high end the VR2 is. It was shocking how much better my experience was at home with RE8 than that.
@invictus4000 sony did pay capcom $10-15 million dollars for each game so they don't hate it that much....remember it's exclusive for a reason
@invictus4000 I had the same thing a couple of weeks back fully made me appreciate how amazing my home set up is
@NeonPizza make a choice....the games on psvr2 versus the games on quest?it's getting closer but psvr2 still blows it out the water.I use the q3 as a pcvr headset yet I still prefer my psvr2 because I hate those lcd panels and the lack of blacks and hdr,I'll take mura, reprojection and persistence problems all day long if we keep getting the games!
@NeonPizza my biggest problem with q3 is comfort,I own an elite strap and a bobo m3 pro and still it's like a brick on your face....it hurts after 20 mins a lot!,I hope you have more luck.Theres asgards wrath 2 on December the 15th which is AAA 60 hour rpg plus we've just has assassins creed so that's good but the pancake lenses deserve better screens it's simple as that, lol
I know I’m in the minority, but I would love to be able to use the psvr2 with the DualSense controller in these type of games.
I will never buy a VR headset but this game does look like it gives a reason for people to buy one, incredible stuff.
@Deadlyblack You're looking for Praydog's Resident Evil mods. He's made PCVR mods for RE 2,3,7 and Village with full motion controls that are supposedly very good. RE4 VR mod is coming but he's waiting until after the PSVR2 version is out to not get into trouble with Capcom.
@tameshiyaku I'd even paid off my credit card so I could put psvr2 purchase on it 😂
Sony clearly don't want my money 😄
@Discol76 really? Sony even stated with the psvr1 that they were selling it at a profit from launch on.
Yes, the psvr2 has the controllers included and more sophisticated tech, hence the higher price point, but it's also been years of advancements between generations. if they're selling this at a loss then they're doing a piss poor job at negotiating production and an even worse job establishing a thriving community. Psblog announcement, little fan fair etc.
I was an early adopter with psvr1, and there was a profitable niche community around that, pvr2 seems set up to failure at this point. Hope things change because re4 looks amazing!
I'm shocked there not charging for it 😒 😐
@tameshiyaku Profit or non profit they want to keep it tied to their ecosystem. Makes no sense from their point of view to open it up to PC
@Discol76 just as much sense as the proprietary portal wireless headphone connection and vita memory sticks I guess. Loads of people use a dual sense for gaming on other platforms and it's not to the brands detriment. I'm not saying your take on the situation is wrong, that is definitely how 2023 Sony is seeing and handling things, but the only way to keep people on your ecosystem is to offer a great ecosystem, not to limit consumer options or rights.
I like Gabe Newell's take: In order for innovation to happen, a bunch of things that aren't happening on closed platforms need to occur.
Proprietary Vita memory cards was a massive mistake. Glad they saw sense with the PS5 memory extension. I respect your opinion and agree with some of it. I think Sony have been pretty good at innovation tbf although locked into their system.
@NeonPizza There is an excellent article on UploadVR titled "Meta Quest 3 & Apple Vision Pro Production Costs Estimated by Supply Chain Analyst Firm".
According to the article, Quest 3's display costs $80 whereas Vision Pro's costs Apple an eye watering $700. Quest 3's display is LCD, whereas PSVR2's is OLED. So, it's probably higher than $80 but certainly well below the cost of the exotic micro-OLED.
@NeonPizza I hate to be the one to crash your dreams, but this hypothetical PSVR2 revision is never gonna happen. Sony is clearly not putting that kind of R&D effort at the moment, and rightfully so. Listen, VR is the only kind of gaming I do these days, but I won't let my bias obscure reality. VR is niche. For now, at least.
I still believe VR will hit mainstream eventually, but that will take many years. And until that point, Sony will invest the bare minimum to keep a foothold in this industry segment.
With that said, it's always fun to speculate. So here's my wish list for a potential 2029 PSVR3 headset:
@NeonPizza I do think micro-OLED will be affordable by then. The reason is that pretty much all high-end headsets coming out now and in the next few years are adopting it. And this means economies of scale will gradually bring the cost down.
Now, although it's fun to speculate on this stuff, I do want to convey the following: PSVR2 is a fantastic headset that, in my opinion, makes the right compromises. So, I don't really care about the bulky design, the controller rings, the wire, mura, reprojection, or any of that negative stuff. I'm actually having the best time of my gaming life, at least since the good old Sega Genesis days. Gaming finally feels exciting and fresh again. And that is what matters at the end of the day.
Good conversation, though. 🙂
@NeonPizza Yes tbf I agree with what you're saying there about VII - It's an intense horror story until it takes the breaks off and becomes an action movie again.
That said, I couldn't play it in VR. The house was too much.
It was the same with Village. I knew there were specific points I'd get to where I'd just chicken out.
The "doll house" in Village might as well be the end credits screen for me if I came to it in VR.
@thefourfoldroot1
Trophies are enabled for VR this time.
@CaptD
Really, fantastic! Getting it then! Where did you hear that? Or are you playing it at the moment?
@SgtTruth why would you cannibalise the sales of village by releasing two RE games together.....makes no sense.plus playing them in vr is a whole different experience to playing them on a telly🤷♂️
