We'll be getting into all of our Game of the Year coverage here on Push Square very, very soon, but PS Blog has just shared which games are taking home its awards for 2023. The official blog has a total of 18 categories, all voted for by the public, and it makes for some interesting reading — especially in a year as packed as this one.
The big winner this time is Marvel's Spider-Man 2. It takes home top honours in eight categories — Best Story, Soundtrack of the Year, Best Use of DualSense, and, yes, Game of the Year, to name a few. It's clear that PS Blog users had a blast with the superhero sequel, because it's all over these awards.
Interestingly, outside of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, there are no repeat winners; every other winning game wins just one category. Alan Wake 2 picks up the award for Best Art Direction, Baldur's Gate 3 takes home the win for Best Multiplayer Experience, and fans voted Fortnite the Best Ongoing Game. The Most Anticipated Game of 2024 predictably goes to Grand Theft Auto VI.
Here's the full rundown:
- PS5 Game of the Year — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- PS4 Game of the Year — Hogwarts Legacy
- Best New Character — Venom (Marvel's Spider-Man 2)
- Best Story — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- PlayStation Graphical Showcase — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Best Art Direction — Alan Wake 2
- Best Audio Design — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Soundtrack of the Year — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Best Accessibility Features — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Best Use of DualSense — Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Best Multiplayer Experience — Baldur's Gate 3
- Best Ongoing Game — Fortnite
- Best Expansion — Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
- Best Sports Game — EA Sports FC 24
- Best Independent Game of the Year — Sea of Stars
- PSVR2 Game of the Year — Resident Evil Village VR Mode
- Studio of the Year — Insomniac Games
- Most Anticipated Game of 2024 and Beyond — Grand Theft Auto VI
So, very heavy on the Spidey there. What do you think of all these winners? Discuss in the comments section below.

Looking at all the winners there it's a good thing that Sony are investing their future in story driven single player games and not some GaaS nonsense. Oh wait..........
Lol of course.
This will rustle some jimmies
Spider-Man 2 was a really good game, but sorry, it doesn’t even air it into y top five this year.
Probably one of only a few GotY votings in which Spidey is a big winner, while BG3 is not.
I really enjoyed Spider-man 2 but not to be too cynical it was the ONLY major new PS Studios release other than VR and annual MLB the Show, with their bias what else would they vote for?
The bugs is crazy in SM2
@Kanji-Tatsumi It won't, we see it's from the PS blog Spider-man 2 would have won even if it had a 60 metacritic. The Xbox goty will be Starfield over BG3, if you have a chance to give yourself awards why not? 🤷
Shocker a PS exclusive wins. Its a great game but GOTY it is not.
Spider-Man 2 was so good, I had to force myself to put down the controller. I was so addicted to the game. Everything is so well crafted, the combat, traversal, graphics, sound and story. A masterpiece in my eyes.
FF16 had a way better soundtrack than Spider-Man 2.
@CharlieChooChoo @danzoEX I also had a very buggy experience, more than any other first-party game since Days Gone to be honest, I’m beginning to think that the game could’ve used a couple more months in the oven but they rushed to get on time for the holidays, that’s why they had to delay the NG+ update even further, it’s not like it was unplayable or anything but it was noticeable the game was not quite ready.
At least they didn’t award Cyberpunk as best ongoing game as in TGA, which was a joke as it has never been an ongoing game, they were rewarded for finishing the game 3 years later lmao
Studio of the Year — Insomniac Games
I mean, I'd argue it's Insomniac that has carried PS5 through most of its existence from a first-party perspective. It's released 3 new games on PS5 where the rest of the studios have released 1 new game.
They should be Studio of the PlayStation 5 Generation.
@TheArt lol exactly.
But what can you expect, it's the PS blog 😅 all power to the voters in the 'just bought the one game this year awards'
I love Spidey but it's not top of my list.
Resi 4 in VR and Baldur's Gate 3 are top for me.
Then Hogwarts and Spidey.
All 4 were epic though.
Admittedly I've only played the start of Resi 4 in VR because the stress of it was nearly giving me muscle spasms.
My goty for 2023 is Marvels Spider-man 2. Thoroughly deserved too. Such a well crafted super hero game in a perfectly suited open world for Pete and Miles to swing around in. Insomniac have nailed it. 2nd to none, with the first two Arkham games very closely behind when it comes to super hero games
Nice to see Hogwarts get a win for PS4 goty too. Currently having so much fun with it, so I can see why
Edit. I think licensed movie games being not so good as games are far behind us now. Recent Hogwarts, recent Insomniac Spidey and previous Arkham games are all top tier. Its just a shame licensed movie games 99.99999% of the time always seem to get ignored or never win at the bigger goty award shows
Who would have thought a PlayStation exclusive would sweep the awards of PlayStation focused blogs.
I don't understand how Gran Turismo 7 wasn't even amongst the nominations for best PSVR2 game of the year. For me it's definitely the best game on it, though Resident Evil Village is very good and I'd put No Man's Sky up there as well as one of the very best games. Horizon was pretty good but not amongst the very best
There's no surprise here. PS Blog GOTY is always a first-party popularity contest.
Nice to see Hogwarts get something since it didn't even show up at the Game Awards.
@Ooccoo_Jr People who vote are hardcore gamers and do not reflect the purchase habits of the average gamer.
I get it — Spider-Man 2 is a first party exclusive which has lacked this year, and it’s a PlayStation centric website, so it’s bound to win GOTY. With that being said, I don’t think the game deserves that prestigious title this year. I won’t go into reasons why since it’s technically subjective.
With that being said, I wholeheartedly disagree with SM2 winning best soundtrack. Listen to that and then FFXVI and tell me which one is objectively better. Nevertheless, that’s just my two cents.
Deservedly so it's stunning.
I'm so stunned I can barely speak! I also hear rumblings that Phil Spencer will name Bethesda the best studio of the year, interesting times we live in
I really liked Spider-Man 2 but man it does highlight how kinda a poor year Sony had and is facing next year. Their only games this year were a VR game and a licensed game that, while great, was a lot more evidently flawed than some of their previous output. It dominated the conversation for not only being Spider-Man, but for being the only big game PlayStation fans wanted to sink their teeth into. It looks true for next year as well, the only exclusive Sony games are 3rd party deals and Helldivers 2. The only upcoming single player party game mentioned is another Marvel game that will probably takes multiple years to come out. Hate to be pessimistic over this simple poll but yeah (Sony if you release Ghost of Tsushima 2 next year I’ll take back literally everything I said)
A Sony blog giving Spider mid 2 most the awards now who saw that coming
Kinda feel like Alan Wake should have won Graphical Showcase as well.
Lol they really tried to compensate for the game awards.
Shouldn't psblog by default only include 3rd party? But at the same time, who cares, it's psblog, the place where important announcements go to die.
@IOI yeah, I love the game, don’t get me wrong. But it was hilarious. Especially considering the game is still garbage on last gen.
This is pretty funny to be fair, if not embarrassing. They might have well just given it best Spiderman game of the year.
I think that an award given out by the PlayStation community is by FAR the most significant and interesting. Why? Because these are the opinions that matter.
I have had an amazing 2023 with much choice. I gave up on following suit with SONY's releases. I am stuck 15 per cent into Forbidden West and have only touched the surface of my PSVR2. My game of the year is Cyberpunk, as it finally reached it potential and.. quite frankly.. outdid what I could even imagine.
Baldur's Gate 3 was very excellent, but I set it aside to fully immerse myself in Night City.
All of this to say: I have no idea when I'll ever catch up to GOW: Ragnarok and Spiderman II.
@Old-Red
How on earth is it embarrassing that people appreciate what seems to be an excellent game?
I bet if you went back through the years and compared the winners of user-voted awards such as this to the release dates of the contenders, you'd find a common trend - the most recently-released contender usually wins.
That's because the fun you had 10-12 months ago doesn't feel the same as the fun you had yesterday, even if the fun from 10-12 months ago was objectively greater if you could stand them side-by-side in time.
I'm not saying Spider-Man 2 shouldn't have won - I'm saying it was inevitable given the voting parameters.
@DennisReynolds Almost like it is your opinion lol
@Kraven Agreed, FF16 absolutely had a far more memorable soundtrack in comparison, especially during the final boss, it ramps it up to 100!
I mean there wasn’t really a big Sony exclusive other than this to release so I’m not surprised. The game looks and feels great but the story is almost laughably bad with how things escalate and it is also the wokest Sony game to date. Happily traded it in after beating the campaign and look forward to not playing it again. The real GOTY is Lego Fortnite anyway.
Sad to see No Mans Sky not win again for ongoing award. That game is so good now and to get all of that for free for nearly 10 years in insane. Hats off to them. Now only if my expedition save didn't get corrupted.
@nessisonett
Facts.
Did they not enjoy FF16? I really enjoyed the story line.. It could’ve been made a series from that alone. I replayed it with the DLC and finished doing all the side quest. It was a well rounded game. I was just surprised that SpiderMan2 got all the attention in almost every category.
Now don’t get me wrong, I did like SM2 and I bought it twice. One for me and one for my nephew. It was and still is a good game. But when I played certain titles I really got wrapped in the story and emerged in it. Like Ghost of Tsushima even Days Gone. I thought SM2 did really well too but maybe since it’s a well known comic and I watched all the movies I’m not really surprised to find out the outcome. I really liked it but I don’t see it being all those things they’ve mentioned in my opinion.
I don't know how GTA 6 is most anticipated game of 2024. Its confirmed to come out 2025 at the earliest
A website polishing the knob of a company that just polished its own knob. "Amazing" XD
I loved Spider-Man 2 but my vote went to Resi 4
