There's nothing like a fresh PS5 firmware update on a cold winter morning. Sony has just released the latest system software update for PS5, bringing it to version 23.02-08.40.00. So, does this one add any handy new features, or is it another that just improves system performance?
It's closer to the latter, but this time it's more than just Sony's favourite patch note. This update makes security fixes, improvements to messages and usability, and improves system software performance. Here's the official patch notes for this 1.185GB update:
- We've made some security fixes to the system software.
- We've improved system software performance and stability.
- We've improved the messages and usability on some screens.
There you have it. Another winning update for PS5 to really pick up the mid-week slump. Are you as excited about this firmware update as we are? Let us know in the comments section below. And, you know what, just to add some spice, making your comment rhyme would be really nice.

Just started downloading and came to PushSquare to read about it
Just when you think your system can't get any more stable and secure, Sony swoops in with an early Christmas present.
Security, performance, stability, messaging AND usability…….it is most definitely Xmas!!! 🎅 🎄 🤶 🎄 🎅 🎄 😀
Is this update has to do with the permanent acc ban problem that has affected some PS gamers?
Almost as many horses as my Nintendo Switch.
I guess this is a "optimize PS Portal" patch.
@anon_pel222 That problem is already solved, if you still have problem accessing your games, try "restore licenses" on your PS4 /PS5....
@Zeke68 I’d bloody well hope so
@Czar_Khastik Hahaha
Ho Ho hopeless
Over 1Gb and that's all the info they have for us?
Well this has truly ruined the Christmas period for me, not sure how any gifts can top the improved stability and performance that Sony have bestowed upon us.
I don’t think that these stability patches work. Mine’s still wobbly on that lousy stand
@Zeke68 He doesn't. He just "read" rants asbout it from randoms in the internet.
I just love the sarcasm to brighten up my day off!
It’s PS5 Firmware Day
So let us all shout “hooray!”
It’s safer to use
And faster to cruise
There isn’t much more to say…
🤷🏼♂️😸
Still no themes or folders? ffs Sony....
@Zeke68 NO buddy I don't hav that problem .... Read on Twitter that's why asking.....
Thanks for the response 🙂
And this is why all of us are still fans of PlayStation. Swooping in at the middle of the week providing us with some stability during these crazy times. Thank you, PlayStation, from the bottom of my cold dead heart.
Is it just me that was thinking there would be additional features for psplus premium members? You know, just to kick that subscriber count some more.
@Zeke68 can only hope, the lag on mine is annoying.
@Axelay71 Do you use Wifi 6 on your home network (router)?
*It's still autumn!
@Zeke68 good question, I have sky Internet how would I find out ?
@Axelay71 My usual advice to anyone who's gaming is that you should never ever use a stock router from your ISP. They are 99% not made for low latency gaming. You might consider wishing yourself a good Wifi 6 router in christmas present.
Anyway, check your router for a model number and google it if it has Wifi 6 or not (probably not) and that is pretty much a must for lagfree Portal playing according to most YT's I seen who have tried it out.
I get mine next week hopefully (not released here yet) and I have a Asus Wifi 6 gamingrouter so I can check it out for myself.
Another factor can be, as for everything using wifi like laptops/phones/ipads and so on. Too many devices that uses Wifi in the same time can drastically impact your remoteplaygaming. Make sure you don't have too many devices running in the background and that your Playstation is not downloading any patch, firmware or game while you are remotely connected.
@Czar_Khastik lol hopefully it's fixing the banning issue people r experiencing 😅
@Drago201 Yes, people will get more secure and stable bans haha
@Czar_Khastik lol damn that's messed up
@Zeke68 thanks for the info, appreciate it.
@Zeke68 Totally wrong if you are wanting low latency WIFI is not the way to go, you should be ethernet cabled straight into you LAN to get the lowest latency possible, the portal will then auto negotiate to the fastest speed possible on your home WIFI but remember if you got thick walls it will screw with the WIFI
@Ypmud How do you connect a lancable to a portable like PS Portal? Sigh....💀🤷
@Ypmud Seems like you made up your own idea what I meant. I take for granted everyone has a lan cable from ISP outlet into the router to begin with.
But if you have an older router that wifi might not be good enough as the PS Portal is made for Wifi 6.
And yes, concrete wall could certainly be a negative factor, BUT my Asus gamingrouter is great through our supporting concrete walls in our house, walls our old Wifi 5 router couldn't handle at all.
If you game alot, a great router is important imho, whatever you game connected with lancable or through wifi. When I changed router about 3 years ago to support my PS5 I went from an average ping of 8-12ms to 2-4.
Well worth the money I think. ✌️🤗
(My PS5/PS4 Pro is connected through cable so my remote play on my vita is topnotch)
Hopefully PS Portal will be just as good when it releases here 🦾
i don’t understand why my system doesn’t do this ***** in rest mode, what’s the point of putting it in rest mode if i still have to update it manually
Have a nice date.
After updating, my PS5 has unlocked the full upload speed (before it was capped) and this should benefit any type of remote play. Highly recommended
Looks like Sony have released something for the old stager too:
PS4 update 11.02 patch (December 6, 2023)
@nomither6 Have you checked that you are still connected to internet in restmode?
*Settings > System > Power Saving and Settings > System > Features Available in Rest Mode
@giacrent My upload went from 12Mbit to 30.8 Mbit out of 1000Mbit (1 Gb fiberconnection). Not uncapped here, but slightly improved.
What is your current uncapped speed if I may ask?
@Zeke68 yes
@nomither6 For me it's 50/50 if my PS5 have updated from restmode or not. I prefer to do it manually though so it doesn't interfer with my gaming.
@Zeke68 went from 12 to 16 which is the maximum for me. I believe they have increased the cap to 30, as I have asked other people too that have faster fibre
@giacrent I think they should up that to 50 Mbit but as the Portal doesn't support 4K it might be a little overkill in the end. But thanks for the info
Still no way to do AVATARS or THEMES on the PS5...really, getting rather old looking at the stupid "news" as my home page.....
Rhyming is so twenty twelve
Haiku is the boss
So have one of these instead
