Persona 3 Reload, the remake of PS2 classic Persona 3 releasing next month, is a direct response to fan surveys Atlus has conducted over the years. Speaking to Xbox Wire, producer Ryota Niitsuma said that Persona 3 was always the first response the studio received when fans were quizzed on what Persona game they would like to see remade.
As such, the Persona 5 Royal team took on the task when its schedule cleared as "the stars aligned" for a remake to be its next project. The studio then got to work on figuring out how to bring Persona 3 back, making sure to preserve the core of the RPG while taking advantage of new tech introduced in the long time since its launch.
"I wanted to leave all of the parts that made Persona 3 what it was, all the parts that made up the core of how beautiful it was, as-is, but then try to address the things that have changed in the interim," said game director Takuya Yamaguchi. "I wanted users to think that when they played this game: 'I’m playing, not a remake of something old, but I’m playing something that is the newest entry to the Persona series'".
Persona 3 Reload launches for PS5, PS4 on 2nd February 2024, but do you think a Persona 4 remake could follow next? Either way, it's nice to know those fan surveys we reported on over the years have actually held some meaning. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Is anyone else bothered by the way these games have these really nicely animated characters and enemies but with borderline PS3 level environments?
Every time I see an Atlus game, I think the same thing: why does the environments look so "poor" compared to the character models?
I guess that's part of the charm now?
Anyways, glad the fan feedback is actually being considered and not just social media antics.
@GamingFan4Lyf They're amazing games but I do agree with you. What these games have in character development, gameplay, story and soundtrack they seem to lack in environmental detail.
It might be budget constraints, engine limitations or maybe something else entirely.
@Pat_trick I tried one of the games...I think it was P5 - is that the one with Joker? Didn't mesh well with me. I think I had some JRPG burnout at the time (I was coming off of Xenoblade Chronicles 3), though, so perhaps I will revisit one day.
I remember that survey, I was one of the people who took it. I also suggested a Persona FPS and a dating sim. Fingers crossed.
@GamingFan4Lyf I do think it's funny that the one game Atlus made with more ambitious environmental design (SMT V) was released on the weakest platform on the market.
@Ralizah By weakest you mean hardware spec, because it's certainly the strongest console by sales right now. 😛
@GamingFan4Lyf Well, of course. We're talking about game design. Atlus opted to make their most technically ambitious title an exclusive to a fairly weak platform. It strikes me as an odd choice. And while I enjoyed SMT V, it did suffer for it in terms of performance and image quality.
Why not design a smaller, less demanding title for the handheld and put the bigger game with huge environments and demons wandering around on the map on a platform that can actually handle it well?
Instead, the stuff targeting power platforms all looks like it could run on a PS3 with very few downgrades.
What's the score on this Remake and expansions? I got P5 but wish I had held off until P5 Royal had released. Is P3 Remake going to launch with all expansions (if it had any?) built in, or is an expansion expected down the line a-la P4 Golden and P5 Royal?
Or should I just wait a year and find out?
@StrickenBiged I fully expect them to give us the female lead version of the story that we had in Persona 3 Portable in a later expansion.
@GamingFan4Lyf The plot is extremely slow burning. It gets much better after 20 hours or so, but I understand it can be a hard sell to convince someone to play for 20 hours until it gets good. What I can tell you is, if there's anything about the game that interests you, keep playing for a while and it'll only get better. If you think the characters and the gameplay are not holding you, then maybe the game is just not for you.
@Mattock1987 A Persona FPS?!
I really hope they listened to you!
I only really have time for one "big" RPG per year, and am tossing up whether to get this or wait for Metaphor: Refantazio. Both look fantastic
@Pat_trick It seemed interesting, but another 100 hours of story-heaving game after coming off of a close to a 100 hour story-heavy game just seemed daunting at the time so I changed focus to lighter action-based titles for a bit.
My gaming moods change pretty often these days. If I play a survival horror or 2, I'm done with survival horror for a bit as playing another just doesn't vibe with me due to burnout. I can't do another long open-world game if I just got done with one. Etc.
Usually, after a bit of a break, I'm pretty excited to go back to the genre and generally have a better time with a game.
@GamingFan4Lyf Oh, fair enough.
Whenever you're in an RPG mood, give P5 a try!
maybe this will mean all those fan surveys to Capcom where I've written "MAKE MORE PHOENIX WRIGHT GAMES" over and over again will finally come to fruition
Persona 4 definitely needs a remake. The original is much too dated to fully enjoy.
this remake looks pretty good but i wouldn't spend more than $20 or make it a priority when i have already beaten the original, not to mention how similar an experience it is to persona 4 and 5. persona fatigue is real.
also, i think it is a shame that persona 1 and 2, but especially 2, continues to be forgotten and neglected. i would 1000% choose a persona 2 remake over persona 3 since it is in dire need of one and arguably a far more unique experience as compared to the latter persona trilogy that brought the series to the mainstream. hopefully it will be next on the list.
@LordAinsley i mean... there have been 10 ace attorney games. the fans have been eating well over the years. i would assume a new entry is in development to follow-up with all the remakes/remasters, though.
@BranJ0 that is an easy decision. metaphor by a landslide for the simple reason that it is a new property (from the former persona team) that brings new ideas to the table. the past 3 persona entries, while good, are derivitive and suffer from a lack of new ideas. hopefully persona 6 will take things in a new direction. but hey, that is just my opinion
I think Persona 6 follows next. After that perhaps a remake of 4.
@StrickenBiged You are free to play base Persona 5. What royal adds can be considered DLC and doesn't really change the ending. You don't need it to enjoy the story.
Persona 3 was the same. P3FES added this extra dlc at the end that also doesn't change anything.
I don't know if they will add dlc or a new version but P3 reload is already adding stuff that wasn't on the original releases and all they could add is again the post ending DLC or the female lead that doesn't add anything major.
@StrickenBiged given this company's penchant for the releasing the same game over and over with no upgrade path, I certainly wouldn't be surprised. In fact, I would expect it
@Porco 10 is fine, but you know whats better? 11
