It’s arguably one of the best examples of the branching narrative genre, and with a movie around the corner, Until Dawn is getting freshened up for PS5 and PC later this year. Ballistic Moon is handling development, as opposed to original creator Supermassive Games, with the title being completely recreated in Unreal Engine 5.
“Until Dawn has been rebuilt with the latest tools and techniques,” creative director Neil McEwan explained on the PS Blog. “New and improved animations build on the success of the original character performances. Characters, environments and VFX have been upgraded – all for a truly enhanced cinematic horror experience.”
Interestingly, the title will now have a third-person camera, allowing you to see the story from new perspectives. The original game obviously used fixed camera positions to frame the action, so that’s a pretty seismic change. The upgraded version will also feature an entirely new score, composed by horror veteran Mark Korven.
There’s no release date just yet, but more information is expected later in the year. For now, you can check out the trailer embedded above.

Loved this game but honestly still looks the way I remember. Unless they add some kind of new features (other than new 3rd person cam) I don't think this will be for returning players.
Guessing this is still a while off as the footage looked like the original. I'm thinking this was just about the announcement rather than showing off the rework. The camera change sounds interesting.
So no paid upgrade to the og owner?
Just saying this now... don't expect any kind of upgrade. This is more along the lines of TLOU part 1.
Ballistic Moon making this makes me think that this is basically a test for them to establish themselves and maybe get to do a sequel.
Looking forward to the truncated movie version with better graphics built with Real Engine 1!
I don't know if I will get it again, but good game.
I'm disappointed that this is what Ballistic Moon has been working on for PlayStation. I was hoping for an original horror IP.
This one has a white spine instead of a blue spine. Take my 60€!
YESSSSSSSSSSS LET'S F***ING GOOOOOOOOOO
Until Dawn is probably my favourite game I've never played (right alongside Resident Evil 7) and I've been praying that the rumours of a remaster/PC port were true ever since they first started coming out, absolutely ecstatic to see this!
I think the one thing that does slightly concern me though is the new 3rd-person perspective as a lot Until Dawn's tension was sort of built around it's fixed angles (a la old Resident Evil games) so I'm interested in seeing what accommodations they make to the game as a result 🤔
One of my favourite games ever but all these choices seem ridiculous lol. The cinematography in the game was excellent, and a massive contributor of atmosphere so making it 3rd person could harm that a lot. Also an absurd amount of work to "recreate" what was already a gorgeous game, what, did the Decima engine not produce good enough visuals? Pfft hahah. Very cautious about this one.
This game had no reason to be remade what so ever. The game STILL looks good and better than dark anthology series from Bandai. What a waste of effort and money.
I'd say The Quarry is the best example of the genre.
Another remake/remaster in the era of pointless remasters/remakes. What Sony game will be remade/remastered next? God of War 2018 as opposed to the older PS2 titles which would actually benefit from remakes?
There are old games that could do with remakes. This isn't old or a game that needs a remake because it still looks good.
Haha Buy the PS5 and play remasters of a bunch of games that never needed it. Because we have fumbled with our internal studios to do live service games that are mostly canceled and we have nothing else for you to play. 😂
Another remake
@Nepp67
Are you kidding? Have you tried playing Until Dawn on PS4 Pro or PS5? It runs abysmally on those platforms.
@HistoricKombat If it runs badly that doesn't mean it should require a remake. A remaster would suffice and also Until Dawn has never run badly, you are lying out your ass there.
@HistoricKombat Does it? Even after it was patched to run at 60 FPS??
@Nepp67 @aj21009 Perhaps not on PS5, I admit I may not be remembering correctly. Until Dawn most definitely runs poorly on PS4 & PS4 Pro.
I'm not usually one to get overly critical about things like this because at the end of the day I can choose to buy stuff like this or not buy stuff like this and choose not to let it effect me but it'd be nice that if Playstation wants to keep spending their time and money on rebuilding games in their library, that they'd rebuild games that aren't already playable on PS5.
@HistoricKombat I cant say much for pro but ps4 definitely not since I played the game on the system at release. Never was there any issue that I saw from playing and even watching others play it in YT.
@Nepp67
I do know that Until Dawn runs at inconsistent framerate on PS4. I would not call it unplayable but it is very noticeable. I believe the last I played Until Dawn it was on PS4 Pro which was much the same...perhaps a bit better but not by much. I don't think I actually played it on PS5.
Looking forward. I love until dawn
Interesting to see how it is with a 3rd person camera but much prefer to play it fixed camera angles
@HistoricKombat it dosnt
