Naughty Dog has announced its making-of documentary for The Last of Us 2, titled Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II, will debut next week on 2nd February 2024. You'll be able to watch the video on YouTube or via The Last of Us 2 Remastered on PS5 as part of an upcoming update. Said patch is also bundling in even more skins for the protagonists Ellie and Abby.
A trailer for the documentary has already been released, which teases a behind-the-scenes look at how the sequel came together both before Covid and during it. Featuring interviews with Neil Druckmann and Troy Baker, it appears the video will also touch on the crunch culture Naughty Dog has gotten itself a name for. The development documentary focusing on the original The Last of Us is one of the best insights into game production around, clocking in at just shy of 90 minutes. It's hoped Grounded II will be just as comprehensive and insightful.

I will watch it to see if they let us know why they made some of the decisions they made
I'm replaying the remastered version ,it really is a masterclass of game design ,sure you may not agree with the story decisions ,but its polished to perfection,if only all games where like this.
I'm playing through the game for the first time currently and boy, Chapter 5 was really something. Was this the main spoiler of the game, it had to be right?
@Hundred_Hand_Slap The fact that you made it this far without ever hearing about it can be considered a miracle.
I just unlocked everything in No Return. If they made a more fleshed out spin off of that mode I would buy in a heart beat.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap I had it spoiled for me by some twit on this very site but it still shocked me when I played that particular scene.
I managed to play Part 2 not knowing that you get to play as another character (not naming names in case you too don't know this) and it was suuuuuch a sick surprise.
I remember coming to what I thought was the end and saying to my wife "huh...great game, but pretty short" and then moving to the second half of the game totally being blown away.
@ApostateMage rarely do I put the controller down and ponder my thoughts about a video game. Such a heavy moment. A-wipes that go around spoiling this stuff for their own twisted gratification should be rounded up and metaphorically smashed with golf clubs... cause it's just a video game.
@dschons much like the game so far, I've been masterclass at avoiding spoilers. I literally know nothing. The trolls have no fire without fuel...
Haven’t seen this much interest in a murder simulator since the Gulf War. The story outside of the revenge-murder part is great and full of heartwarming moments, too bad they get muddled up in the pointless anger scheme.
@Bunchesopuppies Isn't it murder-revenge? If you're going to complain might as well get it right. Also, this is a video game, lop all their heads off for all I care. People approach this game like it's a terrorist beheading video, it's not. It's a bunch of fake, made up, not real characters. Get over it.
cute, but seeing as you make games, can we get a date for something new and not recycled out of your camp ND? Hell, even just a teaser trailer or a paragraph description would suffice at this point.
@KundaliniRising333 you don’t get bored of doing this in every article?
No Return is so good The Last of Us Online would have certainly been the first live service game I got lost in. That cancellation hurts!
@Hundred_Hand_Slap I’m so glad I didn’t have that game spoiled for me such a great experience on the first playthrough… still good on playthrough #4!
Really expecting this is gonna water down a lot of the drama regarding TLOU2’s development. Crunch, leaks and the initial wave of hate and transphobia among the fanbase that spawned, Druckmann’s Israeli Palestine inspirations, inspiration behind incredibly controversial story decisions. I doubt that something like this would touch on these things.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap Glad you managed to avoid spoilers for the game for this long. Luckily I managed the same when I played it at launch on PS4. I did have an inkling of what was going to happen, but it still shocked me when it happened and how brutal it was. Hope you enjoy the rest of the game!
Looking forward to this. It will be especially interesting to see how they managed the filming considering the documentary got cancelled half way through when COVID hit, only for them to pick it up again years later. Sadly that might mean we get more of a retrospective than a real account as it was in progress. Time will tell.
@themightyant March 2020 was when remote work started for a lot of companies (not sure when ND employees went home). So we should have interviews from the first announcement in 2016 until likely March 2020 (only a few months before launch). So hopefully we get a good sense of the overall development. But you’re right that we may miss some of the in-the-moment reaction to the leaks and launch. Having a retrospective analysis of that may be really interesting though as it can put that time into context. Regardless, I’m excited for this doc.
@JohnnyShoulder thanks man, it was definitely shocking. Super risky too. Hope it adds up
Can’t wait to see the documentary of the franchise they killed. 🏌️♀️
