January 2024 was a busy month for new game releases, and the freshly published USA software charts demonstrate this fact quite well. As per Circana's Mat Piscatella, six new titles made the cut, with four of those games pushing straight into the top ten (all platforms included).
Tekken 8 was arguably the biggest winner of the bunch, claiming the second spot behind last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Bandai Namco's bombastic fighter was followed up by Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in third (although Warner Bros. says the shooter sold below expectations), and Persona 3 Reload in fourth. Meanwhile, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth charted a little lower, in seventh.
Outside of the top ten, stylish revival Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown debuted in 13th, and the dismal Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash managed to sneak in at 19th. Never underestimate licensed anime games.
It's also worth pointing out that The Last of Us Part 2 surged back up the charts with the launch of its remaster on PS5. The two versions are grouped for the purposes of these analytics.
Moving on to hardware, the PS5 continues to lead the charge, as it was once again the best selling platform across both unit and dollar sales. All in all, it seems to have been another very strong month for PlayStation.

@PopoverButton These charts count digital data as well (on all platforms except Nintendo).
I wonder if the last of us part 2 sales included all of the 10$ upgrades?
@PopoverButton
Right!?! What is the measure of success for these publishers then anyway? It's almost like they are making these games to Kill studios and lay off people.
Are the Suicide Squad and Persona 3 numbers pre-orders? They came out in February so idk what they’re doing otherwise in a January chart.
@Deoxyr1bose I'm guessing the Jan trading period may cover up to the w/e Feb 4th but their inclusion does seem strange.
@Rob3008 @Deoxyr1bose Not sure about Persona but Early Access for SS deluxe edition owners was Jan 30 so I'm guessing they're counting pre-orders with that.
Interesting that Helldivers 2 is selling gangbusters on Steam yet failed to penetrate the PS5 charts this week. I'm sure Sony is taking note.
@AK4tywill Eh? These are the sales for January.
I felt like I told people Suicide Squad would make it this month. It was obvious based on the PS Store promotions and it being in top ten on there digitally. The users of this site, like myself, are the hardcore, and lose sight that though we stayed away, the general gaming populace will not. Mark my words now, it will be on there again next month I am sure.
I will go to my grave believing The Last of Us Online was good.
People actually bought Sucide squad 🙈 when there so many good games released
@AK4tywill not only this is about January and Helldivers is a February game but also when Helldivers sold its first million the steam players number was on 160k at its highest. From where do you think the other 800k came? lol.
It’s so sad to see Prince of Persia so low on this list. The game is fantastic. The best Ubisoft game of all time, perhaps! It’s my favorite game so far this year. Even if I have a strong feeling FF7 will outseat it, it’ll definitely be in my top 10 this year. Such an excellent title. It and Like a Dragon both deserved better than Suicide Squad.
@Splat a couple of insider rumours say it was very good and testing well.
@get2sammyb Clearly I need to start getting some more sleep. Aside from the fact that I didn't catch that in the massive headline, I don't know why I thought we might get February sales figures before the month's even through. I think I thought I was looking at weekly figures (do we even get those?).
@AK4tywill Not for the US, unfortunately.
Great month for Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon, hopefully the strong sales continue.
