Square Enix has revealed a PAX East panel will be the place to be to learn more about the second piece of Final Fantasy 16 DLC, titled The Rising Tide. Set to take place on 22nd March 2024, lead developers Naoki Yoshida, Takeo Kujiraoka, and Michael-Christopher Koji Fox will be in attendance, and the event will be livestreamed on Twitch at 4:30pm GMT / 8:30am PT / 11:30am ET.
Little is known about The Rising Tide, though it's expected to be a more substantial expansion than Echoes of the Fallen was. Largely focusing on combat instead of story, the first DLC was a fairly simple three to four-hour run through a new dungeon that didn't do a whole lot for the overall narrative. Given that The Rising Tide is expected to cost more, it should be a more important offering. You can still pick up both pieces of content with the Expansion Pass at £19.99 / $24.99.
If you're a fan of Final Fantasy XIV too, you can also tune in for a second PAX East panel a day later all about Dawntrail. What do you want out of the second Final Fantasy XVI expansion? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I enjoyed the game and the story but not sure these “missing chapter” DLCs do much for me. I haven’t bothered with the first DLC yet.
Will keep an eye on it though to see if the second is any better/worthwhile.
@K1LLEGAL It is best to play the first dlc with rising tide due to its really short length.
Haven’t played through the first dlc yet
Just give me this second DLC and that FF16 crossover for FF14 and I am satisfied.
The game is not even a year old and ill have two paid "dlcs" . Which leads this to the fact that this was original game content that they removed to charge people for more. At the end of the day they will charge almost 100£ for the ff16. For me its a big no and Im not supporting these shady tactics from Square so I wont be buying anything else related to FF16. Im up for DLCS dont get me wrong, but as someone that works in the industry I know that no one can develop 2 dlcs or even 1 big dlc in 6-7 months. I sure this was really planned and they removed parts from the original game for then to make us pay 100£ for the worst ff ever ( Not talking about grafics or the story ) . This should be called Final may cry 16
I am more excited to do a NG+ with Leviathan from the start. Thinking about the new Eikon combinations I can make. Loved Echoes of the Fallen, but loving we get a new Eikon to play with thanks to Rising Tide.
Whenever I see the acronym DLC, I read "wait for a full release". And they talked about the game being so final (pun intended), it would never get a patch.
Death to the DLC/GaaS/Macro-transaction/AI/NFT era!
@Neptunes Square Enix has been very upfront about the fact it wasn't planning DLC for Final Fantasy XVI before launch. What you're saying isn't true.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2023/05/no-final-fantasy-16-dlc-planned-said-to-be-a-one-off-game
I bought the first DLC but haven't played it yet. Honestly I'm now probably waiting for the PS5 Pro and hoping the game runs at a stable frame rate on the new hardware before I do my FFM run with the DLC
Echoes of the Fallen was good, but short. I would recommend waiting for this and playing them together like Nepp said. I have been trophy hunting while waiting for FF7.
Imagine watching a tv series for a season where there the end episode resolves all the characters stories, only for a year later another episode comes out and says ‘actually all that happened in the last episode was a dream, and this is what really happened’.
And you had to pay more for it.
@LiamCroft Did you read what I have just said ? its IMPOSSIBLE that they had the first dlc ready and developed in 4-5months after game was released. This next big dlc would take 2 years to be developed and its coming even before the game hits the 1year milestone. So please if you like to be played around in their shady tactics please do. Paying 100£ for a average 40h game + 20hours cut scenes its just funny. But yes, keep feeding this kind of tactics. Future games gonna be amazing.
@TwoDents errrrr most decents dlcs take 2y to be developed. No way they developed this 2 dlcs in 7months
@Neptunes lets be honest, echoes of the fallen is no blood and wine dlc in terms of size. Its a very small addition which generally plays no big part in the story either. All they would have needed to do was reuse some assets from the main game. Record some additional lines and easily implemented in within 1 year of game releasing. It definitely did not feel like cut content either. As it served no real purpose to the main games storyline. It never felt like the story without it was missing anything either. But you believe what you believe. I certainly believe them when they said they released a full standalone game initially and havent seen anything to change my mind.
@Nepp67 yea maybe playing them together would make it one decent package rather than piecemeal.
But tbh I just don’t know if I care to revisit the story unless it was set after the ending.
@MrGawain @Herculean Darth Maul died at the end of Star Wars Episode 1 right? Well... no. He survived and reappeared in several cartoon series, books and more. Hell Star Wars has been making spin-off stories for decades across media.
The Didact died at the end of Halo 4 right? Well... no. He survived and went on to feature in 3 spin-off books.
Riddick was continued from movies to games in Butcher Bay.
Welcome to the capitalist world of transmedia. It's everywhere.
@Herculean
Well, no. I mean the game ended with a definite story finality, and then they are going to change that ending with an update. Imagine If Charles Dickens had released a revised version of a Christmas Carol where Scrooge really killed all the Christmas Ghosts and then evicted the entire population of London. This isn’t a continuation, it’s an alteration. Being able to change a story after they’ve released it to the world cheapens the original story.
I really enjoyed the small DLC (probably compiled in a month or two) they already put out - looking forward to Leviathan! One of the best FF combat systems ever
@Neptunes
A DLC like that won't take 2 years of development time, it'd take a few months, especially within a streamlined development unit in a big company like Square Enix.
You have absolutely no idea what you're on about if you think a DLC of this size would take 2 years to develop.
Then again, i do wonder if you've even played the game after reading your '40 hours + 20 hours cutscenes' comment. Likely you're just on the 'hate things for no reason because i think it make me looks cool' bandwagon.
The director said there was no dlcs and also NO you CANT develop this two DLCS in under 8 months. I said 2 years out of my head because I thoughtI wouldn't need to explain that 8 months have been passed since the released of ff16. So no they wouldn't managed to do that if this wasn't planned before the game released. The last dlc was a secret boss that now we have to pay 10£ to play it xDD. Also yes I did finish the game 1 time with 60 hours so 40 +20h of cutscenes. Why would they make sush a quick dlcs? Sales were pathetic, so pathetic that they HIDE the numbers. graficwise FF16 doesn't have much competition at the moment, however as a Final fantasy it was a fail, game looks like a devil may cry, farming is useless in the game, partywise its dam hell boring to play with Clive only, side characters are usless, character development is non existent ( sKILL points ( a joke of a system , simple, boring ) . character point system ) . VAST empty maps, Most of the maps areas will never be visited by people. Game was in sale 4-5 months after release and also Square hides sales figures to avoid loss of stock value . I love FF and I played since ff2 so no Im no hater. Im just not a fan how FFs games are going, milking people for 100£ for content that was removed from the original game and they hold it for few months. If you guys like it good for you, Theres a reason why in 50M+ ps5s sold such a good looking game ( grafics ) in the last 2 years that most games are remakes and reboots haven't even cross the 5M copies sold.
Curious to see if the DLC will indeed cover the second time skip and give some context to the characters that just drop in at that point and the creation of the new hideout.
Putting things in after the “I told you so” content is a waste of time and energy. So many possible paths and extras that should have been in the original game, and even justifying that it was a complete game falls flat when you give in to public outcry.
Pretty pathetic to release extra material that should have been part of the original. Too little too late.
@Neptunes For someone who claims to work in the industry, you sure are doing a lot to attack your fellow developers.
Anyone know how much DLC this game is getting in total?
I’ve got the game, will start soon, but wondering if best to wait for all DLC to drop first to get a complete package or is it best to play the DLC as and when it comes? Also, is there any content that can be missed if I don’t play now? No timed crossovers or anything?
@Kienda The team for this specific game has disbanded so Rising Tide is the last piece we are going to get.
@K1LLEGAL I can understand entirely and especially when these two DLCs are set near the end of the game. Unless you have a save that is set before the ending you're gonna have a pretty long game to get through.
@Neptunes do you work at square enix
@Kienda It may also be worth noting, especially if you’re looking to platinum the game, that Final Fantasy (hard) mode is unlocked after completing the game and is a platinum requirement. I’m not sure how the DLC works as I haven’t played through it yet (I’m waiting for the second instalment to release) but it might be worth playing through it now and then doing a complete run in Final Fantasy mode. Personally, FF mode felt like a much better balance than my first run and really allows the combat system to shine. It’s a real shame it has to be unlocked.
@neptunes
Spouting more nonsense to hide your other nonsense is not how it works, buddy, that is what we call a strawman fallacy.
First off, as multiple others have mentioned CBU5 can absolutely create 2 DLC's of this size in 8 months. It is 90% asset re-use and really doesn't take long to develop at all.
Also, as others have mentioned repeatedly, the first DLC really isn't 'taken from the main story', they are absolutely not relevant to it and it's clear to see this whas a post-product DLC.
So to your new nonsense about the sales being bad. FF16 sold 3 million copies in it's first week, and was nearly the highest selling non-Nintendo title in Japan for 2023.
It's doing absolutely fine, the current estimates are it's sitting around 5-6 million copies sold.
With few exceptions, almost every mainline FF game ever has sold between 5-10 million copies over it's lifetime. The only exceptions are FF7 (original), and X. No other mainline FF game has sold more than 10 million, and quite a few of them sold less than 5 million.
FF16, having been on the market for under a year, is doing completely fine on sales numbers, and if you've really been playing since FF2 times, it shouldn't be new to you that Squex always reports on their numbers ina particular way (they are never happy, not even with the 20 million shipped on FFX).
Either give me the whole game at launch or tell me there's plans for DLC down the road so I hold off for a "Complete" edition to be sold a year later.
I've moved on from FF16 already. I'm not going back now.
@Jimmer-jammer thanks for the info. That helps to know.
I’m not really a trophy hunter, but I’m currently working on the Platinum for FF15. It wasn’t on my radar at first but as I’m really enjoying the game I wanted to get it. So the same might happen for FF16.
@everyonecomplainingaboutdlc
Try being a Persona/Shin Megami Tensei fan lol...
@Nepp67 wait, i’m sorry what!
You can’t just access these like in FFXV; you can only play them in sequence with the story?
@K1LLEGAL Actually from looking it up, if you have a completed save file it will set you back right before the ending to access the DLC.

@Nepp67 ah nice thanks. Much better!
@savarunl
Well if you enjoy being robbed for 120£ for content that was created with the original game then go for it. Its people like you that feed the new broken games that all they care is micro transactions or some extra dlcs with hidden content from the first release
Some here are insisting that none of the DLC was planned, because Square said so. Let's not forget, Leviathan's crystal has been visible this whole time, and no one in the game addresses it. If that doesn't scream "cut content", I don't know what does.
@L_Bosch
And don't forget the medicine girl that its 200% the leviathan.
I’m looking forward to the DLC. FF16 is one of my favorites in the series, and I have every trophy available, which I’ve never done before as long as I have been a PlayStation player.
@Neptunes
So you're out of arguments (which you kinda didn't have in the first place), then you decide to try and insult me cause you can't take a loss. Way to go dude!
First off, i suggest you look up what the word robbing means in a dictionary, i can give you a hint: Willingly paying for something does not account as 'robbery'.
Noone is holding a gun to your head and telling you to buy the DLC, you can just, you know, not buy it....
I am fine with paying what's essentially 2 coffees on the road for some extra content in a game i like. If you aren't fine with this, then don't.
But don't come here and tell me i am 'feeding' anything, the game is perfectly fine and playable without the DLC and there's nothing 'broken' about it.
Just own up and take your loss, several people in this thread have countered all your 'arguments' with straight facts, there's really no need to start trying to insult people over this.
@savarunl
I will not mind to pay 120£ for the gta6 for example. But never for a FF with 40h gameplay + 20h of cutscenes. It is my opinion and you wont change that.
