The first big update for Dragon's Dogma 2 has landed, with Capcom having promised a slew of improvements earlier in the week. Patch 1.050 is available to download now on PS5, weighing in at 515MB.
This one's all about graphics options, really. The game launched with no way to adjust visuals and performance on consoles, but it now offers toggles for motion blur and ray tracing. In theory, disabling something like ray tracing should help the title maintain a more stable frame rate, but Capcom says such an improvement won't be "significant". We'll need to do some testing, then.
The update also lets you cap said frame rate at 30 frames-per-second. Previously, the frame rate was uncapped, meaning that it could fluctuate all the way to 60fps. Assuming this mode actually keeps the frame rate closer to 30, then it might be preferable for some players.
Some welcome gameplay improvements are included as well. The option to simply start a new game is now present on the main menu, and the item that lets you fully customise you and your pawn's appearance has been made much more available.
Dragon's Dogma 2 Update 1.050 Patch Notes
General Improvements
- Added the option to start a new game when save data already exists
- Changed the 'Art of Metamorphosis' items available at Pawn Guilds in the game to 99
- Made the quest that allows players to acquire their own dwelling (where they can save and rest) available earlier in the game
- Fixed miscellaneous text display issues
- Miscellaneous bug fixes
PS5 Graphics Settings
- Added the option to switch Motion Blur on / off in Options
- Added the option to switch Ray Tracing on / off in Options
- Added the option to set Frame Rate at Max 30fps in Options
Again, Capcom says that specific frame rate improvements are "planned for future updates". Hopefully they're not too far off.

Turned off motion blur as I don't like it in any game and I also turned Ray tracing off too and I actually think the game looks better with it off. I haven't noticed a huge difference in performance to be honest but I'm playing in the capped 30fps just for consistency purposes and it's still brilliant.
From what I understand, the performance is due to demands on the CPU because the game is constantly running physics and AI calculations on all NPCs across quite a large area. So the thing that would improve performance would be CPU-based (e.g. on PC upgrading your CPU would be more effective than upgrading your GPU for this game.) Raytracing is a GPU process and so isn't really contributing to this issue. If this game is pushing the PS5's GPU as well, then turning off raytracing could help slightly.
That said, a lot of people have said turning on raytracing helped performance on their PC. As someone said, using words I don't understand, it "frees up rasterization performance as the Ray Tracing is done entirely on the CUDA cores."
Motion blur and Ray tracing off should improve things. The question now play at capped 30 fps or leave uncapped
@Matroska
LMAO GTA IV existed on PS3. One of the most impressive games in terms of physics.
We've been seeing absolutely no physics on PS4/5 games (Spider-Man 2 PS2 has better physics than its PS5 counterpart. Period.) and meanwhile this pathetic game with tiny physics is a struggle on PS5.
Guess that's why we're seeing no physics anymore.
Ps. I'm enjoying DD2, but I've been losing hope in the industry for a while now. It's pathetic
Still haven’t started DD2 yet waiting till I’ve finished the first one and FFVII remake Rebirth.
Hoping to start it in a next few months though
Set it to 30 and switched motion blur off, kept RT on as it does make a big difference. Nice the patch came pretty quick.
Just a heads up, I'll be testing this patch today and I'll hopefully have time to write up some quick impressions in an article.
@DennisReynolds how you finding those settings? I'll fire it up later on to test but was thinking of leaving the RT on if the boost won't be significant
@ShogunRok look forward to it, hopefully it helps.
Does kind of feel this is another £60 beta at the moment.
I'm going to wait awhile for everything to settle in a bit and maybe a price reduction.
@Northern_munkey motion blur that too strong make me having motion sickness.
A patch to start a new game is a fine encapsulation of the state of modern gaming.
I would like a option to select multiple things to give to a Pawn at once. You can do something similar when selling.
Turning off RT probably won't help much, the framerate gets choppy in the cities on a high-end PC with everything turned down to PS2 settings
I have tried the patch and I believe that the 30 FPS cap has bad frame pacing.
@Dudditz09 Haven't really tested it as i haven't had time to play yet, i just switched the settings and then came off.
@DennisReynolds I've set it up that way, been on for about an hour and it seems a bit smoother, but I have mainly been exploring, not been in a town since I have updated. Dunno if I'm just imagining it, will see once I get back to a town
I'll turn the motion blur off but definitely leave the RT on as it just elevating the game to a new level for me. Great game, great to have options too
From these improvements, it is clear that the game wasn't ready for release when it got released.
Turned off motion blur and ray tracing kept it at a variable frame rate. Works a bit better it’s slightly improved needs more work though.
It continues to be odd to see people complaining of “lazy devs” when crunch and layoffs are an ongoing issue in the industry. Games are more elaborate, cheaper and more plentiful than ever, but some people will always complain.
The original DD was something of a cult game for a reason. Personally I’m enjoying the hell out of the sequel, and I’m glad I bought it at full price so we hopefully won’t have to wait another 12 years for another one.
I tested it in and around the main town, and the capped 30fps mode actually seems worse due to some frame pacing issues. The RT and motion blur off also don't make much difference so I have ended up just keeping the same settings! The game looks a lot flatter and last gen without the RT with makes a significant difference to lighting. I found for me at least the motion blur actually seems to smooth out the variable frame drops better than without. It is good however to have the option for people who get motion sickness or eye problems to turn it off.
They need to work on the CPU side of things with the NPS's to get frames up. Maybe an option to lower the number of non quest based NPC's would be a good start. The more NPC's you interact with as the game goes on, the worse the main city's fps gets.
@leonel_1511 Agreed you can see that they never designed the game around the 30fps cap.
Yeah “lazy devs” should be find-and-replaced by “greedy publishers”, the devs are the heroes of this story
@darylb24 this is exactly how I imagined it would be. It has been designed to run Ray Tracing and Motion blur and always seeking 60fps, and limiting it to 30 and removing those is not going to be an actual fix for anything really it is just something they chose not to add, as it makes it worse in other ways. But at least people can try it for preference
If they can sort it so big spells and lots of action don't create a frame slow down then that will be the one fix that is needed, but I imagine that would takes months not a week. City stuff is slower pace anyway so doesn't really suffer because you aren't really doing anything intense so can just move your camera less most of the time and live with it.
But it is kind of the same reason they didn't add a new game initially, because they chose not to, not because it wasn't finished (no game is ever really finished until it has had years of patches anyway) Because in DD a new game overwrites your current save, which is how the game has always been designed, and it is a dangerous thing to include if you share a console with someone who might not be aware of this. A genuine problem for people in the first games, so much so that they removed to stop it happening this time 😅
But hey, people screamed and got their "fixes"
For the rest of us, we can continue to enjoy the game, and hope that maybe one day there is some actual improvements, as with all games further down the line.
Now they just need to fix the npc pop in in cities but will they be able to fix it?
Just tested it and there is a noticeable bump in FPS when turning off ray tracing. It still chugs in towns but overall this is a small but decent improvement and actually makes the combat more tolerable.
Turned off RT, motion blur, and kept variable frame rate and I saw a huge boost in FPS, at least in Battahl (on PS5).
Turning RT off definitely helps a lot! But the game looks a lot worse imho
I felt that the quest for the house didn't come too late on. By the point it arrived I had the gold to purchase the house. Any sooner, I would've been short.
