Update: This patch is now live for PS5 as well as PC.
Original Story: The latest patch for Helldivers 2 has just hit PC, and will soon be deployed on PS5 too. It's making some interesting changes to the popular co-op shooter, including a new feature that'll make some planets a more dangerous place to inhabit.
New planetary hazards are being introduced. These are randomly generated environmental threats you'll need to avoid or overcome while out on a mission. Two examples given in the patch notes are fire tornadoes and meteor showers, but there are "many more". As if battling the endless hordes wasn't tough enough.
Elsewhere, the update makes some tweaks to balancing across various weapons and Stratagems in the game. Some, like the Breaker, Railgun, and Energy Shield Backpack, are being nerfed a little, while others, such as the Flamethrower, Laser Cannon, Punisher, and Breaker Spray & Pray are getting a nice buff. Developer Arrowhead has said its intention is to make every gun and Stratagem a viable choice and avoid "stale" meta builds, where specific bits of equipment are strictly considered the best.
The patch also makes Eradicate missions tougher, and makes a number of bug fixes, including the anti-aliasing toggle not working on PS5. We've popped the full patch notes below:
Major Updates
- Planetary Hazards active
- Many planets now have additional environmental challenges that will appear at random while you are deployed, from fire tornadoes to meteor showers and many more.
Balancing
Eradicate Missions
- Eradicate missions now require more kills and enemies spawn more often. The time to complete the mission was previously shorter than intended and should now usually take twice as long to complete.
Primary, Secondary, & Support Weapons
- Breaker: Decreased magazine capacity from 16 to 13, increased recoil from 30 to 55
- Railgun: Decreased armor penetration, decreased damage against durable enemy parts
- Flamethrower: Increased damage per second by 50%
- Laser Cannon: Increased damage against durable enemy parts, increased armor penetration, improved ergonomics
- Punisher: Increased total ammo capacity from 40 to 60, increased stagger force, increased damage from 40 per bullet to 45 per bullet
- Breaker Spray & Pray: Increased armor penetration, increased fire rate from 300 to 330, increased number of pellets from 12 to 16 per shot, decreased magazine size from to 32 to 26
Stratagems
- Energy Shield Backpack: Increased delay before recharging
- 380mm and 120mm Orbital Barrages: Increased duration of the bombardment, decreased spread
Fixes
- Fixed armor rating values not reducing damage as intended.
- Fixed certain Bug Holes (including Stalker Nests) that were unnecessarily hard to destroy.
- Fixed anti-aliasing toggle not working on PS5.
- Balanced lighting across all planets to solve cases where the game was too dark.
- Improved flashlight efficacy.
- Increased visibility during “sand rain” weather on Erata Prime.
- Updated tutorial materials and lighting.
- Improved cases where some materials could look blurry if "Lighting" graphic setting was set to "Low".
- Fixed timing issues that could occur in the “Extract E-710” primary objective.
- Changed button interaction behavior for buttons in bunker POIs. Helldivers will now let go of the button after holding it for a few seconds.
- Fixed some cases of large assets floating if the ground beneath them was blown up.
- Helldivers standing next to ICBMs during launch will get properly toasty with a chance of not-so-spontaneous combustion.
- Fixed unthrowable snowballs after ragdolling.
- Fixed being able to use grenades after drowning.
- Camera no longer locked on the player's own corpse and blocking spectator mode.
- Helldivers now take damage from fire, gas etc. generated by other players.
- Armor no longer stretches when dismembered.
Known Issues
These are issues that were either introduced by this patch and are being worked on, or are from a previous version and have not yet been fixed.
- Game may crash after dropping several high power stratagems in succession.
- Picking up items from caches may cause characters to freeze in place for an extended period of time.
- Picking up items from bunkers and caches in quick succession may render one of the items unpickable.
- Players cannot unfriend other players befriended via friend code.
- Players may be unable to select loadout or return to ship when joining a multiplayer game session via PS5 Activity Card.
- Mission objective HUD displays different numbers for client and host during some missions.
- Default armor is always shown while viewing the warbond, regardless of the armor that player has equipped.
- Text chat box display is obstructed by the cinematic letterboxing during extraction.
- Some text in the HUD/UI is missing or not displaying correctly.
- Players may experience issues when many players attempt to login and/or play at the same time:
- Login rate limiting
- Players may become disconnected during play
- Various UI issues may appear when the game interacts with servers
- Some games may not be joinable by others for a short period of time

Most importantly the anti-aliasing on PS5 should be actually working, making it look less like a PS3 game lol
Looks like I got the helldive trophy just in time
I do wonder what the patch being out on PC and not yet on PS5 means for crossplay?
Edit: I believe I got my question answered - with one of the previous patches, a friend of mine could go online on PC without updating but the game wouldn't allow him to join games, saying game versions don't match. I expect the same here, effectively forcing no crossplay during this period.
Geez, they are NERFING stuff, **** c'mon... ALL crap should be buffed just to accompany Breaker and Shield.
I hope the energy shield backpack isn't just useless against chargers now.
I've heard people have just been farming eradicate missions, which made joining game lobbies at high levels like 90% one game mode for people, which was frustrating for people trying to actually play the game normally at increased difficulties.
I don't get the point in farming in something like this, the game is an endless loop of fighting, there is no finale to get to, and no PvP, so what is the rush to get that XP for? To make more of your time later on in the game easier so you get bored with it faster? 😬
People who love the Breaker just haven't heard about/unlocked the Slugger yet (which is fair enough as it's all the way on page 8 of the free Warbond). I unlocked it last night and boy-oh-boy is it good provided you keep calm and land your shots.
Gutted their nerfing my favourite guns
Very happy to see such a big damage increase on the flamethrower. Not such if it damages high armour targets though.
@RBMango apparently it's been nerfed a little more than is ideal. Hopefully they'll rebuff it a bit
I audibly had an excited gasp when I saw the flamethrower buff. I love that weapon but thought it could use more damage. I’m excited.
@Ravix I've seen this a lot too. It's amazing, isn't it, how people are taking a game which revels in pure fun, and somehow making it into a grind fest. And for what? To get to level 50? Okay great, then what. Like, people are ACTIVELY removing as much player input as possible just to watch numbers go up. Beggars belief!
This seems like a great patch. I can finally use the flamethrower again without feeling like a hindrance to my team. I also like the 120mm and 380mm orbital bombardments, but they were almost useless before. Now, they will be much better!
At the higher difficulties, there are some (toxic/dumb) players who will kick you if you don't pick specific strategems. It's better if all the strategems are equally viable, so you can play with what you want and still succeed.
Must admit those eradicate missions were pretty easy to do if you laid down a mortar turret.
PS5 patch should be live now
Should they be nerfing stuff? Haven't played the game yet, but from what I've heard, a lot of the enemies are overpowered
Updated the article, the patch is live for PS5.
@NinjaNicky Ah. I played the original back on Vita way back when and remember it being ridiculously difficult. Been tempted to jump into this one though - the new mechs/exosuits look really cool
The railgun was a top tier weapon so why nerf it when you have to earn it!
I find most games have a good mix of weapons, we aren't all running around with rail guns and gen packs I see a lot of grenade launchers and anti tank weapons so seems a shame but maybe it's different on PC!
@NinjaNicky only thing is you can easily get XP enough for 1-3 levels from one mission if you do Suicide or above difficulties and optionals. The rewards on lower difficulties aren't worth the stress to be honest. But dealing with 4 bile titans and 5 chargers coming at you is also a trip.
Ok, so considering this game will be around a while and will get several patches, can we really keep saying "Bug Fixes?" Because I am responsible for SEVERAL bug fixes every night.
@NinjaNicky I like this post. It speaks to the common man and it has common sense. You have shown sufficient democracy!
Man I was really hoping the Senator would gets reload increased
All you Helldivers do please add me - HotstuffFred 👍🏻
@Mostik Between both PC and PS4 I definitely felt a disproportionate amount of backpack+railgun+breaker in the games. It is pretty boring to see the same thing all the time, though I have nothing wrong with people playing the meta in general. Even in the context of PvE games, nerfs are just as important to the overall health of a game as buffs. This isn't the kind of game where getting to a high level is supposed to allow you to just coast through later content, but is instead supposed to give you a wider variety of options to increase versatility.
The planetary hazards look awesome! Nice addition to the game and they can definitely wreck havoc lol. The flamethrower is indeed more useful now. I can still use Railgun but it seems Charger spam may end up being even more a problem now. Fun times though.
Seems to be crashing more eon PS5 these past couple of days unfortunately
@Cloud7794 Hi buddy, I agree we shouldn't all be running a meta build and it's clearly what Arrow Head are trying to avoid I just haven't come across squads of the same build, if anything I think the grenade launcher seems most popular (along with the Gen pack).
Having played a few games last night the nerf is not too bad, you can still one shot a bile spewer in unsafe mode and the chargers are now more like 5 -6 shots (with my aim) which seems fair.
The games brilliant as is the community and you are right versatility is very welcome I was just a bit gutted to see 3 of my favourite bits of kit get nerfed first 👍
