Ahead of (or maybe alongside, we're not sure) the release of its second expansion, Final Fantasy 16 will be getting a free update that includes some rather positive-sounding changes. Patch 1.30 was detailed during the developer's PAX East panel, so we've gone ahead and sorted the additions and improvements as bullet points:
- Return to a quest giver immediately with the new "Quick Complete" function
- Icons updated for important character quests (we assume this is so you can skip lesser quests without having to worry)
- New Skill Set feature allows you to save up to five unique Feat and Ability sets (this is essentially a loadout system)
- Abilities and Accessories adjusted to make easier to use (we don't really know what this means)
- New controller type allows for customisable button layouts
Again, we're not sure when this update is coming, but it'll either be before or alongside The Rising Tide DLC, which drops on the 18th April. We'll edit this article with confirmation, if we get it.
Might you be diving back into Final Fantasy 16 some time soon? Let the flames consume you in the comments section below.

"Icons updated for important character quests (we assume this is so you can skip lesser quests without having to worry)"
Could have gotten this out before I was sitting at ~90% complete AND put in over 50 hours because I have been doing every single side quest in fear of missing out on something important.
An incredible game that just keeps getting better.
Really hope they improve performance mode too by the time the DLC comes out 🙏
Awesome update. I'll jump back in at some point when next DLC comes out, to play them both
A welcome surprise. I was just getting back in to it to go for the plat trophy
Loadouts is a must. I have a Final Fantasy mode ability list I'd like to be able to save and easily come back to, so I can try other stuff. Now I can!
I just started playing it and am only 15 hours in but am really enjoying it. Not sure i have played long enough to have a list of updates I’d like to see. So any that come along seem welcomed.
Release date for the Rising Tide DLC is sooner than what I expected but it would be nice to go back to FFXVI while taking a break from FFVII Rebirth
This is an awesome upcoming update. Maybe I’ll do a second playthrough once all the DLC releases, and get the platinum trophy. I just have to beat the game on Final Fantasy mode or whatever to get the trophy.
But does it make them fun?
Ability loadouts is nice, it was a little annoying switching my skills up before a boss fight. This is most likely not going to happen but man I would love, love, love, for the Ultimaniac difficulty to be added for the full game instead of just arcade because enemies are actually aggressive like they should be compared to FF difficulty
@Ashina Honestly it felt good going back to FF16 after Rebirth. I could not stand the mini games and open world that I needed a break from it.
I decided to hold off on new game plus until after the DLC came out. Turned out to ve a good decision. I can't wait to play Final Fantasy mode with all this new stuff
Be nice if I could finally play in 60 fps, performance mode ain't it at all.
Shame for what's supposed to be a premier ps5 title 😮💨
I'll pay for a 60fps patch at this point. Guess I'll wait for the PS5 pro until I replay the game with both DLCs.
@Enuo Same here, glad I didn't rush to get the Platinum trophy after finishing my Normal playthrough
PS6 Remaster?
I’ve been waiting to start my New Game+ playthrough (aka. Final Fantasy Mode). Seems like doing so is going to pay off a bit with these QOL improvements. 🙌🏼
Really embracing the lazy way to complete a quest eh?
I will be back for the rising tide and will enjoy this changes in the meantime
This is gonna be great when I eventually come back to get the platinum on that second playthrough
I like the customizable control scheme. That was my biggest complaint about the demo. One or two of the mappings felt wrong to me.
Just waiting for a bigger price drop. Got my backlog in the meantime — so I might be ready to play it by 2080 🤪
Very much looking forward to rising tide dlc and starting my new game+ with the improvements to what is already a fantastic game……after I have beaten the heck outta FF7 rebirth of course Kupo
Too late, I'm with Dragons Dogma 2 now.
Can't wait! So much good Final Fantasy content right now.16 and FF7Rebirth compliment each other nicely. Both great games in their own right.
@Jayslow i was thinking the same thing. But if the rumored spec leaks are legit. The PS5 Pro won’t be getting games to 60fps. They have a 10% increased CPU. Bringing them to 3.85 compared to the Series X 3.80 for reference. So neither machine is a 60fps beast and that is just the sad part of console vs PC gaming. The CPU’s in both PS4 and Xbox one and now PS5 and Series X just isn’t cutting it.
Sounds like great improvements to be honest.
@HonestHick you are partially correct: not all games are CPU bound. Those limited by the GPU (the majority, really) will get an easy bump.
@fabio78 thats true but with the PS5 Pro 5 more times than not the CPU and Ram will be why we don’t see most games at 60fps with all the other stuff going on like ray tracing. But for everyone that is saying Sony should have went with a better CPU. They can’t really cause it would harm backwards compatibility for future consoles alongside making it harder for devs to make for PS5 base. So Sony did the right thing sticking to the cores in the base PS5. I will be selling my base PS5 and getting a PS5 Pro and whatever added advantages i get from it i will be happy. I am one of the few that like Pro models. 😊
Only played the demo and have the game in backlog. Seems like I should wait a bit before jumping in!
@Nepp67 I really don't understand the love for this game, worst in the franchise.
It's a walking simulator/Quantic dream game, which I like but I buy and play their games for that.
This final fantasy is just poor. Walk here, now walk here, now walk here. Press some buttons in time while we play a movie you can't watch because you're looking for button promts, it's not final fantasy!
I hope the success of this game doesn't lead to more like it and they stick to the massive world building that so many fans seem to hate in the new ffvii rebirth.
@Bloodeye Anything can sound like the worst thing ever when you oversimplify it to its very basics. For example: All you do in FF7 Rebirth is walk around in the open world and just do mini games and watch cutscenes, this game is just a mini game simulator and is the worst FF game ever. See?
I'm not saying FF16 doesn't have flaws, but there are better ways of giving criticism such as side quests needing to have much more variation or the game needing to be harder than it currently is. FF16 is fantastic to me because of its focus on its fun and simple action combat system, its cinematic eikon bossfights, and heavy focus on story that it does incredibly well.
Love it when devs keeps supporting this amazing FF XVI
@caiol92 Yep, they should'v done that in a separate region for that to happen. Really took a hit in the final third for that reason and then you get a bunch of side quests as well.
