The heavily rumoured PS5 Pro will feature a GPU (graphics processing unit) up to three times faster than the PS5 model currently available, it's been claimed. Insider Gaming and YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead state PS5 Pro documents were posted to Sony's developer portal, and screenshots have been shared with them that suggest the upgraded console will deliver significant improvements over the original system.
The PS5 has access to 10.28 teraflops of graphical power, but it's reported the PS5 Pro will more than triple that to 33.5 teraflops. That "works out to a 45 per cent rendering performance improvement over the PS5". Then, the PS5 Pro will offer three times as much ray-tracing performance — and in some cases four times as much — and utilise a PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution system. Rumours suggest this is machine learning technology for image upscaling.
First-party developers under the PlayStation Studios banner have reportedly had access to PS5 Pro devkits since September 2023, while third-party teams received them roughly two months ago. From the Spring, it's said these devkits will be identical to the model Sony plans to ship to the public. Insider Gaming understands Sony is targeting a Holiday 2024 launch, but there's a chance "the date could be changed due to the lack of first-party games released" on PS5 this year.
Sony is yet to confirm or even hint at the existence of a PS5 Pro, but following confident reporting from multiple sources over the past year or so, it certainly seems like the hardware manufacturer has an upgraded PS5 model in the works. If it does exist, how much money would you be willing to pay for one? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

If all that is true then I'm definitely buying one. It actually sounds way more impressive than I thought it would.
But with the impending PS6 release so close, who would really fall for a PS5 pro, especially Microsoft releasing the next Xbox successor at the end of next year, Sony will be hard pressed on releasing a PS6 even sooner rendering the PS5 pro a waste of money, time and resources.
Hopefully will get an official announcement soon. Noticed there’s lots of deals on PS5 consoles with up to £90 off so maybe will get a update after the promotions have ended and they’ve shifted some of the excess stock
Wow.thats a lot.but im waiting on sony to say something about the ps5 pro.i got the ps4 pro and its a amazing console.word up son
Is it needed? Probably not but it will still be an automatic day one purchase for me!!
Do we have a game that maxes out the PS5 yet? Or is this just wanting 4K at 60 or 120 FPS?
Easy skip. There’s not much I care to play besides multiplats atm
I'll get this without hesitate ^__^
@SegaDude7
Microsoft have been very clear about NOT releasing a "Pro/upgrade" Xbox version, Phil Spencer rather opt for a whole new console by 2025/2026
If the Series S holds back the X - not sure how the Base PS5 won’t hold this back; but there we go.
@Player_1_Ready @SegaDude7 Yea supposedly Xbox would be in for the next generation instead of a Pro. All rumours though, as is this article.
@Player_1_Ready Microsoft and clear messaging do not belong in the same sentence.
I'll be buying this just to play the best version of GTA VI at launch.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk :
While that's true too, that makes them unpredictably dangerous for Sony caught unprepared with people investing on just a PS5 pro.
@K1LLEGAL :
"If the Series S holds back the X - not sure how the Base PS5 won’t hold this back"
It wouldn't be the first time Sony puts their foot in their own mouth and do exactly what they criticized the competition for.
This console is going to be expensive unless they drop the base price of the current PS5 permanently
@Intr1n5ic They'll sell you a PS5 Pro version of GTA V first.
@Intr1n5ic Seeing how the last few years evolved… the best version of GTA VI will likely be a few months after release…
And if a PS5 is still over £400 in 'sales', how much do you think this will cost? £700? £1000?
This sounds like a PS6. How much is that gonna cost?
@MrMagic the upscaling tech is the big sell here. It means PlayStation is willing to invest in things to make developer failures (or inabilities) a non issue. Given how many games struggle to maintain decent frame rates or resolutions, this could be a massive step forward.
None of these features will be taken advantage of outside of first party titles. Save your money people.
@BAMozzy going back to the ps4, it had a chunky price drop in Canada from 479 to 328, later 279. PS4 pro then launched at 499. Id imagine a similar tactic here, albeit with a less substantial price drop. I’d estimate we’d be looking at 699 to 729 CaD for the pro. Nothing to scoff at, but I’d say it’s more likely than not.
I still haven't got a PS5 yet, so I guess I'll hold off and wait and see if this materialises and what the price point is. I'm a bit sceptical generally on mid-generation hardware upgrades though. If software needs to run on both the pro and the vanilla console, then it seems like whichever of the two consoles people own, someone is not getting the best deal in that set-up.
@Enigk Probably right 😄
In all seriousness though, Sony will be eyeing GTA as a huge pull to sell pro units. Rockstar will have these devkits for roughly a year before the expected launch, and with their long running promotional ties, I imagine Sony will be doing everything they can to ensure there's a pro version ready for it.
Probably not getting sucked into a pro again. Too expensive over an already expensive console, and sales too low on them for devs to justify doing much special work for it other than a few games. Too short a shelf life. Unless it makes something amazing for vr2 anyway.
@Player_1_Ready Xbox podcast just a few weeks ago and post interviews already put a 2027-2028 time on their next console and hyped how powerful they claim it will be. No new gen from either company soon. Nor should there be. MS has talked about new hardware for 2024 to announce in June. Rumors hint of handheld but a pro is a safe guess. Not a current gen successor.
@TimeDelayedGamer currently the ps5 slim is on sale on Amazon uk for £389 if your a prime member . Worth it in my opinion
And if true maybe 3 games will make significant use of the extra power before PS6 releases. Now if there was extensive investment in top tier PSVR2 games or PCVR ports this would be a no brainer, but for flat games no. Not really needed 99% of the time.
Look forward to playing the first party games that will utilise the power of the PS5 Pro to its fullest...in the year 2032.
Seems like it’s potentially a lot more powerful than I was expecting. Still sticking with my current Spider-Man PS5 that I got last October, though. Games still look great on it. I’d only consider upgrading if I could get it dirt cheap with a trade-in, which I doubt would be an option.
This rumor seems very sus, and there's not much backing it up, either. The YouTuber seems to be very hit-or-miss. There is a PS5 Pro in the works but this doesn't seem to be it.
Is anyone working in push square planning on buying one 🤔
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk those discounts are for Fiscal year 2024 sales, which ends at the end of March.
I want to know the storage it has definitely got to be more than 1 terabyte by now
GTA6 will be good on this!
@Player_1_Ready I'll fall for it day one
I would have bought it anyways, but 3 times the specs and just 45% rendering performance? I guess they improve the GPU but CPU is not as much improved. Kind of the same as it was with PS4 pro, 100% the GPU improvement and 50% CPU over the base PS4
@get2sammyb The timing seems too good to be true. This console will be all about GTA6.
Yeah sounds great ..untill you realise it's all pretty irrelevant as games have to also run on the base ps5...so will just be a case of the same games just being able to play at better frame rates....not worth it really for current ps5 owners
@Player_1_Ready
lol. Can I have some of what you’ve been on.
No one has a clue when a PS6 will be out.
Years away.
You’re reply is hilarious
I'll do what I did last gen- keep the base console, save the cash and enjoy the greater leap when ps6 comes.
At least this gives naughty dog another excuse to release last of us again
If the information is true then this is a significant upgrade. Way more than I expected.
I will buy it immediately.
Thanks, but no thanks. Shelled out for a PS5 at launch and I l love it, but without exciting games on the horizon to really put this tech to use it’s a no from me. I’m sure it’ll sell like crazy though… 🙄
For those who say the games/developers can't yet take advantage of the increased power, I think that's false.
Any increase in power that makes 4k at 60fps with full ray tracing close to or the actual standard is something every game and developer can implement immediately.
I am tired of having to choose between one variable or another.
In the words of Peregrin Took, "I'm getting one" 😄😄
I don't care about the price... I'll just sell my regular PS5, keep my Slim for backup and put the money I make from it into the Pro 🤙
And IF this is true….
We now know the exact read Sony has been quiet on first party releases. They will want them
For this.
All I'm reading is rumor and speculation..no real hard facts at all. Troll bait at its finest. If this is a real and lots of emphasis on "real" then this will be an expensive proposition. Ps5 was maxed out ages ago? I don't think we have seen what the ps5 is truly capable of yet.
That would make the wait time more bearable with the mini games in FF7.
Buying it on release day
Started playing Ghost of Tsushima this week, the PS4 disc version on my PS5. Game looks really impressive considering I just finished Spider-Man 2. If a PS4 game can look that good on a PS5 don’t see why I’d need a Pro? Nor a PS6 for that matter, not sure I’ll ever get an 8k tv, there’s hardly anything 4k to watch as it is.
I have no interest in a PS5 Pro. I don't even feel like the PS5 itself has been pushed far enough to warrant a refresh.
This isn’t going to be cheap if these specs are accurate and if the PlayStation portal pricing is anything to go by - $200 for a streaming device with an 8” 1080p lcd screen. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if the ps5 pro ships for anything less than $699. This will be an enthusiast device and Sony won’t be looking to take much of a hit on its cost as, like ps4 pro, it won’t come anywhere close to the sales volume of the base system.
Unlike the majority of people in the comments, I’m not committing to buying something without knowing the price point. Especially when Sony’s latest hardware release, portal, doesn’t exactly scream value for money.
Yeah i don't buy this at all especially if Sony want to sell this thing.
The Pro is what I've been waiting for! Can't wait to be playing GTA6 on my Pro next year!
I would probably only be tempted to buy it for Horizon 3 I guess. I have a 3080ti which is just as strong as these specs, I can settle for GTAVI and the evitable Tsushima sequel on the regular PS5 and play MH Wilds on PC. They would need to shock the world with a Bluepoint Bloodborne game or something to get my $ for new hardware after the PSVR2 letdown.
I can't throw away money on buying a second, better PS5. These pro consoles make me feel like I've purchased a dud by buying early. With as many games still releasing on PS4 you can be sure the next generation I'll just wait for the PS6 pro.
No thanks, I'm not a sucker. The PS5 is great as is and will continue to be great. A Pro version is unnecessary and I'll be using my money more wisely.
@Ludacritz Yeah, I mostly agree. The launch consoles are starting to feel like budget beta models and the pro is for dedicated gamers. Not really what they wanted I'd think.
@NeonPizza Yeah my display is 4k60. HDMI 2.1 so no vrr either, but I bought it specifically for the current Gen consoles, and it was before 2.2 came out for smaller screens. But otherwise it's a great looking and performing display so I'm not really looking to change it either. It's hard to find one without annoyances.
I'm sensitive to 30fps but I'm good with 60 for pancake. Vr is a different story, though the only game I've Even seen 120 in is song in smoke and I admit it's cool, but I think it's cool BECAUSE VR, and I'm not sure it would wow me in pancake games. Lots of great vr content would sway me but who are we kidding, that's a half dozen games and quest is lead platform for the rest.
Though I think 4k60 really is the goal of the pro, not many games are getting even close. Hogwarts is a technical masterpiece at 45hz. I still am surprised they're doing pro (assuming they are) since it didn't really sell well last time. It "outperformed expectations" in the early adopter window then sank like a rock. And this thing won't be cheap. Meh.
Now if Xbox really does the rumored Deck style handheld I'm all over that. With the popularity of switch and ps portal I think that would be a hit. I already have a big library and it would honestly make me reconsider launch switch 2 as that would truly become an exclusives box.
Nah I'm good. I'm still happy with the standard PS5. My next Playstation upgrade won't come until the PS6.
@Player_1_Ready so close? It'll likely be 4 years 😂
Still happy with my ps4 and not planning on buying a ps5 until games stop being released on ps4.
@BAMozzy 499 at an absolute max. You can already get a PS5 at under 400. It'll be 299 come end of this year
Nope.
Skipped the PS3 Slim, PS4 Pro, Switch Oled... and I'll skip the PS5 Slim and Pro
Everyone gets 1 hardware purchase per generation on launch day - No mid generation refresh.
I could not care less about this. With all the games that I play on Playstation, I have only had one game that gave me trouble with the performance. These days, all I play on my PS5 are my old PS4 games and indies. Here's an idea, Sony. How about making games instead of console iterations?
@GloriosaDaisy Honestly, I've had days where I've questioned why I even bought a PS5. The PS4 was amazing. You're really not missing much.
@Player_1_Ready if you use that argument, buying a PS5 was a waste too as the pro is out this year lol
2020 2024 2028
There will always be times where you have to bite the tech advancement bullet
One thing I learned this generation is that the next consoles Im buying is the ps6 pro and xbox series x 2 pro. Way too many games was released multigenerational this time.
The next nintendo is the only one Im willing to buy day one.
It's not 3x faster or even remotelyclose to that, it'll have a 45% performance increase and the tflop uplift is down to moving to RDNA3.
The RX6800 and 7700xt have 16 and 35 tflops respectively for near identical performance
@jt887 No, it'll be around a 7700xt or 3070ti as Nvidia's equivalent
@VaultGuy415 your 3080ti is around 35% faster than these rumoured specs
@MrMagic think of it more as 16tflops vs 10.3 for the true performance uplift, the 33 reported is because of it moving to RDNA3 and isn't really performance related
Somehow I get the feeling this will be about as beneficial to the PS5’s library as a New 3DS was to 3DS gaming.
@jt887 yeah I agree, we'll get sharper looking 60fps modes and better RT, I'll probably still get one though
I'd be a lot more excited for a PS5 Pro if there was more than one game that would actually benefit from it.
All I've played on PS5 so far are games that seem to have their wings clipped in their scope and execution. No amount of power will resolve that... it's genuinely a bit of an impasse.
The only exception, you'd think (and it does remain to be seen, but you'd bet your house on it wouldn't you...) is of course GTA VI.
Who is going to buy a Pro for one game...? Hrmm well for GTA... it wouldn't surprise me.
As for everything else... load times going from 3 seconds to 2 seconds doesn't excite me. Poorly executed design made to look a little better but ultimately still flawed doesn't excite me. Not enough to drop circa. 500 anyway.
unbelievable, i gotta see it to believe it. if it’s true then i’ll definitely upgrade my pc graphics card; i cant let console have higher numbers
well... my body is ready, as someone would say.
@Zenos agreed. both consoles released under the propaganda of 4K60 and neither can do it. sometimes 4k sometimes 60fps but never both consistently in a complex game. this is a welcome introduction to true console 4k gaming. day 1 for me. 35tflops is about upper-midrange PC spec and with the benefits of a closed system that could be awesome.
@nocdaes I’m inclined to agree.
We’ve not seen the PS5 reach anywhere near its true potential. If games aren’t cross-gen, rarely have they really pushed things to wow me.
I’d consider a Pro if it does offer that wow factor, but I’ll be looking at examples post-launch
i'd get it when available at recommended price.
Pretty sure the up to three times faster is only achieved by using said Playstation's version of AMD's FSR.
A holiday launch! So soon! Can't wait for July/August to come!
I already felt that PS5 wasn't that big a jump over the PS4 Pro in many respects. And again, this - if true - will seriously dampen the impact of PS6 when it arrives.
They need to knock these "Pro" versions on the head and save the improvements for the full generational updates. There's no competition for the PS5 as it is, so no need to improve it halfway through it's life cycle. It's like yet another recent game remaster... nobody asked for it, and nobody needs it.
Hmm, I'm assuming the PS5 slim will drop to £420 when this releases. I'm imagining this being £550? Surely it wouldn't be more than that? (Also I'm sure both will have discless versions that cost £60-£80 less).
@jt887 So essentially you think games will run pretty much the same on both systems but the pro versions will look a bit better?
I'm going to stick with the standard. Looking at my library of PS5 games, there is a grand total of 2 games I could not have bought on PS4. I honestly regret buying it in the first place. PS5 will likely be my last Sony console before I make the full switch to PC if they really do decide to lean in on this all-digital future.
Bought the PS5 to get rid of the noise my "vacuum style" PS4 Pro made (had the first iteration of it, that had a cooler noisy as hell).
Considering getting the PS5 Pro for 2 big fat reasons (aside from playing PS exclusives ofc):
I don't give a crap about 8k or 4k@120fps, that's marketing BS I, at least, don't need or want.
But 4k@60fps good looking Quality mode - that should be possible and MADE possible for existing and future games.
Put a 700-800$ price tag on the damned thing if actually required by the hardware costs, just give me this feature and we're golden.
I mean it all sounds very nice! If it could indeed offer graphical quality modes at a full 60fps then it would be tempting… but really it comes down to cost and how long the wait will be until the inevitable PS6.
Maybe if they bundle it with a big game I might be tempted.
All the pieces coming together gives the impression that GTA6 will be rather early on in 2025 (e.g. March/April), Sony would take advantage of PS5 Pro being the best performing version of that game and then flesh out the rest of the year with a big 1st party PS5 lineup (e.g. Wolverine, Ghost of Tsushima 2, next Naughty Dog game).
I am getting some weird artifacting with my ps5, i think mine is failing. WIll look into getting this.
We need neither ps5 pro nor ps6, we need games for christs sake
I'm most looking forward to PSSR, their AI upscaling tech
@carlos82 "67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point."
No I won't think of it that way because it is 33.5 at FP32 👍
I’m fine with what I have but I also know I will still likely get one
Wholly unnecessary without exclusives to play on. As of today there are 12 exclusives on PS5, several unreleased. That's embarassing.
@pirlega thank you!
@nocdaes same, me and my friends play mostly indie titles for lack of actual PS5 games
@MrMagic well that's fine but I'm just saying it in regards to gauging performance between the PS5 and Pro. RDNA3 uses dual issue compute to come up with that number, so that the 16.17 tflop RDNA 2 RX6800 has the same performance as the 35.17 tflop RDNA3 7700xt. Oh and the 29.77 tflop 3080 outperforms both by nearly 20%
Tflops are a terrible way to measure cards between architectures
I'll skip this one, just like i did with the PS4 Pro. We're still getting PS4 games (!!!) and we're in the middle of this generation. I can't be bothered to get a new machine at the end of this year when in 2026-27 PS6 will be out. I'd rather save my money for the next gen consoles and upgrade my PC.
I'll bite for sure, even if it's not day 1
I think this is the PS5 we all wanted, initially. Anything that will unlock more Ray Tracing performance is good for me. Throw in some Cerny resolution upscaling magic and we might finally see some games that actually look like a next gen step up 😅
Like someone mentioned, GoTII, Wolverine etc. We don't want these games looking like PS4 Pro games but with faster loading times
we want them to knock our collective socks off.
I think both Xbox and PS5 undershot the next gen leap, as devs wanting to make their games look good needed way more power, especially now that Ray Tracing et al have joined the party. Console makers just wanted to blindly focus on that 4k resolution at 60fps, and that would require much less demanding games graphically, which no one wants to make
@Player_1_Ready yeah I feel MS will try to catch Sony off guard by releasing the next Xbox early against a PS5 pro in relatively quick succession, leaving Sony caught off guard.
Eh - I'm ok with skipping this. Why spend more money to play remakes of PS2/PS3 games
@carlos82 Yeah I'm aware that TFlops can be misleading but that's fine by me either way, actually if it keeps the price down I'm all for it.
I'm more interested in seeing what level of Ray Tracing it can deliver and how good Cerny's resolution upscaling is, or Cerny's secret sauce as some people call it.
@Player_1_Ready PS6 wasn't wasn't supposed to come out until presumably November 2028.
I honestly don't expect Xbox to be much more powerful then the pro. I think they realise they screwed up on having to separate system with different capabilities and want to correct that by releasing what is essentially pro version of Xbox and get rid of S and X.
@MrMagic yeah I'll be very interested to see how good it's RT and upscaling is
@jt887 totally agree, especially with respect to GTA VI. Rockstar have never targeted 60fps at launch on console or provided performance options.
Red dead redemption 2, their latest open world entry, had a 30fps cap across the base Xbox one, one s and one x, despite the huge gulf in gpu power, slightly higher cpu clocks and increased ram. The one x just provided a higher resolution output and improved graphical fidelity. GTA VI will be a better looking 30fps title on ps5 pro, and I shall be happy to wait for the pc release and the definitive version.
@BAMozzy no doubt, PS5 in general is still selling for £450, this will be £600 at minimum
@NEStalgia I think Microsoft will keep only 2 Xbox consoles on the market at a time (they made sure to discontinue 360 before XB1 got a revision and XB1 X|S before Series X|S released) so like if a handheld happens, the Series S is discontinued.
I think the holiday 2024 Xbox hardware will either be the September 2023 leak or the September 2023 leak with Series S replaced with a handheld. They may tease next gen but I don't think there'll be a Pro.
The focus being on trying to get people to subscribe to Game Pass and porting Xbox exclusives to PS5.
But what for and at what price, at no point on my ps5 gaming I think "man I want more powerful machine". I just want more and better good exclusives rather than just more power, I can buy pc videocard for that 😕
Day one buy for me, I'm still on PS4. This is why you don't buy new generation consoles on release. The whole gen has been poor so far for exclusives compared to PS4. Current gen consoles were not needed 3+ years ago with the PS4 pro and one x capable enough.
@PerpetualBoredom i honestly have no clue what these people play who say they’re gonna buy it day one. Makes zero sense, literally no game had issues running on ps5 while i have not played one single ps5 exclusive yet. My ps5 has been like a ps4 pro plus
I don't believe at all these rumors. There is no customer need for a PS5 Pro or PS6 or whatsoever. Sony is already selling at loss the PS5 and we are aiming for a generation of low-fi games because spending hundreds of millions to release one game every 5 years is just unsustainable. As some people said above, nobody is asking for ray tracing when you are already craving for an interesting game to play.
@pirlega PS4 Pro Plus, nice one. Absolutely mental that Sony possibly cranks out new hardware before the software peaks.
I’ll wait till next year and see how GTA 6 handles on base PS5. If it’s reported to be bad then I’ll buy the game and PS5 Pro in the inevitable bundle.
@B0udoir PS5 isn't sold at a loss. It hasn't since 2021. I mean I'm a customer and I want one. Nothing wrong with wanting higher frame rates or resolution. PS5 has hit the limit of what it came do.
@pirlega I mean we play games... isn't that your fault if you haven't played a PS5 exclusive? I've played like 12 that are only on PS5 console wise.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah I can see that. Microsoft has been heavy on promoting handheld, from switch itself to Ally and all. And I think the S market would overlap the switch market well on a handheld. Heck, I use my S as a remote play streaming server for my G retroid. I bet a handheld S these days could be similar docked power to regular S. And it's a good use of the low spec hardware.
Definitely no new gen tease. We got that tease this month with the "biggest leap" stuff and confirmation it's years away.
If the handheld is real I'm way more into that than 5 pro. I used my vita more than my PS4 lol.
@Snick27 no we dont. We dont have anything that ps4 pro couldnt do imo
I have a hard time to believe that a ps5 pro is 3 times more powerful than a ps5. I could believe that a ps5 pro has ~30 TF but the extra 20 TF are presumably special lower precision flops only useful for AI. I could believe that a ps5 pro has dlss like upscaling and maybe is 50% more powerful than a ps5. But I would be really surprised if it is 3 times more powerful. I don't see any technology that exists right now that would allow this if the power budget is ~200 watts.
I would definitely buy it when it is released. Could easily trade in with the current one.
So when this comes out will that mean Sony is now forgetting the PS4 I highly doubt it and if that is the case what is the point in all that power of previous Gen is sort of stopping it
I just don't see the point of this at all
All those features sound great, but I think right now I’d rather just have a disc drive that consistently recognises discs.
@Player_1_Ready console gaming sounds like a waste of time to me, this generation has been a joke and doesn't feel like it's even really started yet because the majority of games have been terrible cashgrabs like immortals of aveum, atlas fallen and forspoken which all seem like the exact same game with their stupid glove/hand magic , terrible characters and stories.
I can't think of a single game that i have played or liked that was only on current gen besides dead island 2.
@Shinnok789 Can you even see a visual difference in 1080/1440 vs 4k because i can't and i know many would rather play the likes of starfield in 1080p 60fps than 4k 30fps.
@B_Lindz Modern day devs can't even make remasters of 20 year old games we've seen that with this new battlefront collection
Tell me I don't have to choose between performance and quality and it's a day one buy for me. Barring a drought of any compatible launch games for it.
@NeonPizza Its not going to be 120 FPS and native 4K with raytracing. Come on what graphics card do you need to pull that of on PC where you pay more for the graphics card alone then a PS5.
I don't get it. Has there been a shift to 8K that I've missed?
@jt887 I think what I wanted to say is if You have 100 New Zealand Dollars and somebody gives You 200 Hong Kong Dollars You do not have 3 times the money but only 40% more.
@Andy22385 dude if you like shovelware ok, dont expect normal people to enjoy that. tbh its not even exclusives, there is nothing interesting coming out anytime soon besides perhaps MGSdelta and god knows when that will be. i dont play "live service" games, i dont consider them.
Remember the days? They said the PS5 would end the ‘loading-screens’? Now it is even 3x faster! 😉
Let's wait for official announcement by Sony...I'm afraid every game will need a pro patch and it will take some time and god knows if they will be motivated to do it. Sure 1st party studios will probably prepare them some day but there are not so many ps5 games. Will wait for the price too, I'm willing to sell my og one and buy a pro but it will have to make sense to me - maybe if CDPR will come with patch for Cyberpunk, then I'd consider for sure as I still had not a chance to play this game
@HeavymetalGordon they wills ay they won't patch, a year later they will change mind, just like the witcher 3 on the ps4 pro
@Deityjester You're missing the point bub.
On the PS5 Pro I want Sony to get rid of this "feature", of the choice that even you mention in your comment: having to lower the resolution and graphical quality in order to reach 60fps.
With the PS5 Sony promised gaming in 4k - no mention of that 4k being "30fps if you want quality mode" anywhere in their marketing campaigns.
So we were kind of duped - I for one, despise that.
With the PS5 Pro I want "quality mode at 4k@60fps" plain and simple - no more corporate talk, no more marketing BS.
I don't care about 8k or RT or 120fps, they can stick them up... somewhere.
And weather that 4k resolution is "real" or upscaled (using something akin to FSR or DLSS) I don't really care - I use DLSS 2 or FSR2 on my RTX 3090 to obtain exactly the same thing on PC and it works flawlessly.
They CAN do it, no matter what anyone says - even if the console ends up costing 700$... though IMO 600$ should be enough for hardware that can achieve this, especially if they implement "frame generation" too. And they'd be crazy not to use frame gen, especially considering this new hardware has to "hold the fort" for the next 3-4 years until PS6 comes to town.
People wanting better image quality, will buy the Pro - people that don't care about graphics, or don't have / want to spend the money, can keep their current PS5 or buy the PS5 slim - and everyone's content.
@MomsSpaghetti marketing should be “imagine if every game were an exclusive.” But yeah, this sounds like a huge deal. Only question is whether it will be console side or dev side. The latter would make it pointless, but if the console has more or less of an overlay then it would mean we wouldn’t have to rely on devs to care. Some of the most fun games this generation gameplay wise have been marred by performance problems and it’s not exclusive to PlayStation. Devs in general are struggling to optimize their software.
Happy for them to develop this in preparation for the PS6. First gen technology is rarely great, take a look at DLSS and FSR.
Although I probably wont buy one (and I've purchased every PS console since the original)
Development cycles are so long now too that less games come out now. For example during ps3 era ubisoft put out an assassin's every year. Now the last two entries were 3 years apart. Not a big fan of that game these days but still...
This means that they would want to maximise profits by releasing on as many platforms as possible and that means the PS5 will still be very relevant by the time PS6 comes around. Maybe even more so than the OG PS4 is to PS5 today.
based on the poor sales of the ps4 pro, which went on to sell a mere 15m units for sony (about 13% of all ps4s), i don't expect the ps5 pro to sell more than 10m units by the end of this console cycle. doesn't seem like it is worth the r&d and additional software development costs at all.
indeed, this is looking more like pc gaming with each day that passes. more powerful hardware with fewer games taking advantage of it in meaningful ways. just a box with more untapped potential. this era of gaming will not get any better so it must be ackowledged that the next 4 years are going to be a transitional period for the next console cycle. the current business models that are being utilized by console manufacturers and publishers alike have botched this console cycle.
@Shinnok789 but were we duped? They said gaming in 4k but never promised 4k@60fps. People assumed it was going to be just that but anybody being realistic would have seen it was going to be 4k@30ps and anything up to 1800p@60fps. I'm hoping that Sony ditches the cross gen parity that appears to be in place and we get to see exactly what the ps5 is really capable of.
For me the only game changing technology will be the embedding of chips dedicated for AI. It would generalize the Sophy experience in GT7, it would also enable the game to learn from the player and adapt. It will be a new era in gaming. This is what I expect from a PS6. More underutilized graphics power is a waste of money. Games never looked so good but so uninspired and boring at the same time.
@DeathlySW You just said what i thought. Lazy devs will hide behind that tech. But imagine how lazier they will get... kind of a spiral (hope i am wrong).
On the topic - i am very interested in one.
PS6 - i think they will delay it
MS - i would expect them to drop the consoles and work on IP sales. They already lost the console war.
@Sergo if they get lazier they’ll get shut down which is fine by me. Either that or parent companies will be forced to properly upgrade their proprietary engines. Koei Tecmo’s Katana engine and Bethesda’s Creation engine are both dumpster fires, and small revamps are making their inherent flaws worse.
@pirlega shovelware? Literally none of the PS5 only games ive played have been shovelware
@Porco how do you figure it'll drop? A lot of people I've noticed have waited that long for a PS5 to actually be available they're activitely waiting for the pro model. If the PS4 pro sold 15m. How is a PS5 pro, of which the original is selling more than the PS4 did, only selling 10
So more hardware for less games. That makes sense - not.
With PlayStation profit margins being so weak, this seems crazy as they will lose money on it and potentially push themselves to the red.
Just wait a couple of years for the PS6.
What a boring generation this has been. The PS5 has been one of the most lacklustre consoles ever.
@Andy22385 there seems to be a general lack of interest for a ps5 pro for many reasons... the most obvious being that this console cycle has been rather underwhelming and people are still waiting for the current gen to truly take off. in other words, sony (and 3rd party publishers on the whole) have a lot of work to do on that front so it is unreasnaoble to expect people to buy another expensive piece of hardware when the previous iteration failed to meet expectations on the software side (it is irresponsible and premature to relase a pro in my opinion).
then there is the higher cost of living now as compared to 8 years ago (when the ps4 pro released). this will obviously be a major factor and result in lower demand for a ps5 pro. the base ps5 was already an expensive device — the pro will likely be even pricier so it is a tough sell. i also don't think the ps5 is catching up to the ps4 in total sales (i predict it will hit 100m or less) so it is a given that sales of the ps5 pro will be impacted. all things considered, this will result in softer sales for the ps5 pro if i had to guess.
@Porco I agree with you on the game side and the lack of them but PS5 seems to be struggling more on current gen games than PS4 did and people are noticing. I have a day one PS5 and I'd certainly welcome an upgrade. Especially as its looks to be quite a hefty upgrade. GTA 6 will help with the sales of it. Really can't see people waiting a game like that at 30 fps.
PS5 will smash 100 million imo. The sales of PS4 and PS5 are pretty much identical after 3 years and PS5 hasn't had an official price cut (in fact it went up). And yet its still tracking with PS4. PS4s first price cut was after 2 years. It then got another price cut after 3 years. PS5 has yet to get those and it's still selling what the PS4 did. Which given you said about cost of living, that shouldn't happen.
@NeonPizza yeah the Pro is nowhere near 3x as powerful as the standard PS5, it's around a 50% uplift in GPU power
we are now in the crazy situation where the machine development cycle is shorter than the game development cycle. Except for Nintendo. I'm playing Tears of the Kingdom on a device using a 10-year old mobile phone cast-off chip and it looks wonderful and plays beautifully. Something ain't right.
Three times faster, sure. Will it have at least three times more games than the regular PS5 though? Then it'll be a good investment.
@NeonPizza I have to wait what the console is gonna be like before i make my comments.
@zekepliskin Exactly, the lack of actual PS5 games is embarassing, to say the least.
