Sony likes to put on major State of Play livestreams and host its PlayStation Showcase during the month of May, and it appears the company is gearing up to do so once again in 2024. Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb reports he's heard "a bunch of times" from sources that Sony is planning an event for May, and it sounds more like another big PlayStation Showcase rather than a more subdued State of Play.
Grubb's comments were made when discussing the ESRB age rating given to the Silent Hill 2 remake, which he reckons could be a part of the show. The remake from Bloober Team is still slated for a 2024 release, and Grubb guesses it shall feature in the event: "I have heard that there will be a PlayStation something, either a State of Play or a Showcase, next month, in May, so this is probably going to be there."
He continues on the Giant Bombcast: "I’ve heard both a Showcase and maybe State of Play. It seems like it might lean towards Showcase, it’s definitely in that timeframe of when they did the Showcase last year."
Sony hasn't hosted a PlayStation Showcase since the 2023 edition — which also fell into the presumed May slot — where the hardware manufacturer received criticism for focusing on its slate of live-service titles rather than new single player games. Fairgame$, Concord, and Marathon were all revealed during the livestream. Given the company has now taken somewhat of a step back from its Games as a Service push, fans will likely hope to see new offline experiences like a Ghost of Tsushima sequel announced.

My excitement to gaming nowadays is completely gone. I used to get so hyped for these things.
Nowadays PS2 games feel more grounded than the terribly written, soulless floaty Ubisoft style games that all play the same. It's hard to get excited anymore.
Sony been in stealth mode more than sly cooper.i miss sly cooper.one of my favorite video games franchises ever.word up son
1st Party Roadmap or gtfo!
@Specky I'm more hyped when I take a PS1 or PS2 game from my collection and boot it up on a small 14'' Sony Trinitron than when AAA copy-paste efforts are being showcased.
Will it this time be the over-the-top show case ? Or again just a state of play with very cool games but games which will not fulfill all the unrealistic expectations ?
@colonelkilgore road maps don't exist this gen. We will see like 1 or 2 new games, as is the norm. Maybe a couple CGI announcements. Don't get hopes up
Hard to get excited about more sequels, remakes, remasters and souls like games.
Here's hoping that media outlets don't spoil what's in Sony's next event unlike the last SoP.
I'm still hoping for fractions 2.
Time to do what xbox have been doing and announce some single player games that are years away. I know most people don't like that but atleast it will give people an idea what to expect going forward and stop some complaining about Sony's single player games being missing (although certain individuals will complain no matter what).
I think there will be a release date for Concord and Death Stranding 2, maybe an update on Fairgames and Marathon, and I fully expect some big third party exclusives to be shown. There's an outside chance of Pragmata appearing and the Bloodbourne Remake everyone is dying for.
As always, if and when it happens, I'll wait until the stream is over and fastforward everything that does not interest me.
@colonelkilgore I dread to see it, the last roadmap was dire but they did seem to rip it up and start again (I say rip it up and start again ).
Please Sony for the love of God show the PSVR2 some respect.
Fingers crossed for Spider-Man 2 remastered, it's been long enough!

Only games I would be excited for would be Bloodborne or ghost of Tsushima 2
PS5 Pro or new CEO?
Behemoth on PSVR2 is the only game that needs to show me something at this point.
Everything else I'm happy to take as it comes.
@CaptD well I can assure you that cartographer ain’t ever seen a road… if that even was a map, it was of a frikkin’ dirt track 🤣
Besides Obviously Games, I'm Excited to see IF they Officially announce the PS5 PRO with a Complete list of it's Specs, and then thoroughly Go through it's Complete Hardware Architecture.
Happy Gaming ✌!
@Specky Which is why imo people get so pi$$ed off at Premium's lacklustre Classics library. We are more excited now for a 20 year old game than what Sony is currently subjecting us to.
Did I forget the /s ?
Wouldn't waste money on a lying rumourmonger to be honest...
A new Astro Bot game for either PS5 or PSVR 2 would be great
Sony got nothin'. Hopefully they will prove it wrong but generally a dire 'generation' from all sides.
We’ll probably get Concord and Silent Hill 2 updates. And this after The Final Shape presser that’s coming up. None of those light my fire at all.
Which is fine by me because I have plenty of games from the last 3 years to keep me busy, not to mention the games from this year already.
Nonetheless, I am very curious about what’s going on at BluePoint, Bend, and Sucker Punch. It’s been really quiet there.

What's this? Someone is ziplining in from the rafters...
It's Jim Ryan Remastered and re-released as the all new president and CEO of SIE 👏👏👏
@Specky I sincerely agree with that statement 100%. Weird is, though, that Nintendo games still have that spark that they did 20-30 years ago (Kirby Forgotten Land, Super Mario Wonder.. even Zelda Tears of the Kingdom).. Sony and Microsoft games have lost that spark completely. It's all generic open world/action games nowadays and it makes me sad to be honest.
What are bluepoint and housemarque up to?
I’ll pass on watching this and simply read the negative reactions to what will likely be a GaaS showcase after it’s done…
@Maubari
I got a switch solely for BotW and loved it, but even that got stale at times.
Still need to play the second and other Nintendo games though.
However, Sony does still make amazing games, but some games like Horizon really feel toothless.
They don't go the extra mile. It's hard to explain. It feels too clean. Never do I get the sense that this is a post apocalyptic world where people are desperately trying to survive.
Something that the Last of Us games have done so well. Tbh even Days Gone did it really well. But then again, that was such a great game for that studio and everything's set up for DG2, but Sony cancels it? Same with Factions 2, they wasted so much time and resources, so just finish it.
Instead they buy Ronin, well woopdydoo
I am ready to be hurt again
@UltimateOtaku91 Based on Miyazaki's latest comment I no longer believe anything BB-related is happening
Makes sense given PS Studios doesn’t have any PS5 games with specific release dates after Stellar Blade. Showcase in May allows April releases like Stellar Blade and FFXVI’s 2nd DLC to get more attention.
@Titntin Actions speak louder than words. And right now, like it or not, those actions suffer from negative pattern recognition.
@Specky
Yeah, I see what you mean. Personally, I'd love to see them make another Infamous game, or Gravity Rush/Knack.. something that ISN'T open world or JRPG.
Though I will have to admit that I'm currently playing FF7R and that one is really good.. though one of the major events in the game did get spoiled for me :/
Either they make their own PS Studios exclusive AAA IP's the centerpiece of the show, and present some hardware like the PS5 Pro, or they can cancel it altogether.
I'm tired of seeing them dedicate 90-95% of their shows to 3rd party games, and only throw some short and dry text lines on Twitter (or X , whatever) about their own IP's...
Give us some glimpse about how the future of Playstation will look like, what games are PS studios working on, what hardware is in the plans etc... or stop throwing money on those useless shows! Allocate them instead to keeping worthy people hired, so they can keep making good games.
@VaultGuy415 I think the only chance at this point is a Bloodborne Remake as a launch PS6 title. If this doesn't happen, its game over. We will never get anything.
Cue the internet starting to expect many wondrous things, whipping themselves into a frenzy by the time the announcements come around - only to lose their minds when they don't get what they all thought they deserved...
Very excited to see what they show off. Sadly I just made the decision the other day to not buy any new games until I've played every single game I'm interested in on PS Plus. Which is....a lot.
I'm personally excited to see what's coming.
I guess its too much to hope for people to be positive in this day and age and actually want to see what's coming.
But that's fine. I would like to state I respect them enormously of course. Even if they moan they don't know Sony's roadmap and then moan when there's a show to tell them. I respect that. It makes total sense.
Normally I say they should only show when it's close to release. But they need to start showing games from PS Studios.
Grubb says it, take it with a pinch.
Covering all bases with a shotgun spread again.
What would make the show A tier for me isn't even the first party stuff, I'd be very happy with them showing Pragmata, MGS 3 Remake, GTA 6 gameplay trailer (shown running on PS5 Pro which also gets announced) and a Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay trailer.
Well got for pc releases next month so maybe that'll get shown. Ps5 pro will be announced soon to give people some hype going into the holiday. They still need to show us sonys next big game. Been dead silent since spider man 2 and they've been riding on ff7 rebirth to buy more time.
We need a big event as playstation fans are getting restless and threatening to buy pc. I really think sony needs to look at pc as the new threat now that Xbox is gone and has inherited Xbox ex exclusives.
If it weren't for Korean (stellar blade), Chinese (blackmyth WuKong) and of course Japanese studios (practically everything else worth playing) this gen would be very slim on AAA games. Western indie studios are also doing much of the heavy lifting, but the big studios have just been sacking left and right.
I was all in on a PS4pro but I'm not on board for a 5pro, since this gen has barely been utilised at this point.
@Bionic-Spencer we‘re all here for the negative comments, its our daily bread
Just someone, somewhere reveal what the new Yoko Taro game he said we’d have information on early 2024… it’s possible this will include it? Right? …. Right?
Just give us a road map for the rest of 2024 and 2025 with some real release dates, so I can budget and preorder a few games I like and I’ll be happy. I’m more than happy if we don’t get any huge games in 2024, but some smaller titles. I’m a little burnt out of RPGs, open worlds, and the like anyway because man… the time sink.
Whether I want the games or not, I just like to plan ahead. If I buy more games, great. If not, then not.
Sony didn’t help themselves by announcing they wouldn’t have any big games for the financial year people would actually be excited about.
Even if there is fun stuff to announce, they’ve already poured cold water on it themselves.
PlayStation has been the most disappointing it’s ever been for me. The shows and lack of news has been really bad.
I have zero hype.
PlayStation is now run by a numbers guys who doesn't care about the product even a little bit. I need to see that someone... ANYONE at PlayStation is interested in making money via good games instead of exploiting a captive audience. I'm not confident.
Here's hoping its better than the last one
@Specky I used to hate comments like this but it's so true nowadays
All aboard the hype train!! Choo choo
@OmegaStriver you obviously weren’t around during PS3 launch then haha
@Specky Then branch out? Play more Nintendo games. Play more indies. Play more Japanese AA titles. Whatever looks fun.
You don't need to be "hyped" to find countless fun games to occupy your time if you look outside of the usual heavily-marketed AAA fare.
Even if you just stuck with Playstation, there are so many games on the platform that I guarantee you haven't played that there's not really any reason to be bored or pessimistic.
My prediction: 3 remakes, 5 remasters, and 2 sequels !
@Ralizah
That's my point though, I'm comparing them to how the big games used to be.
I like all sorts of games, but Sony's style is where it's at for me.
My point is that most of these games just fall short. They're my type of games, but they never meet their potential and gamers are always there to defend mediocrity. That's the disappointing bit.
It's all by the numbers most of the time. Very factory made. Slap some nice graphics and a framerate (because that's all people care about), a generic story and job's done.
Though I can bet Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 has more depth in terms of animations and physics. You fell of your horse in that game and you'll felt it. Spider-Man 2 PS2 same thing. Fluent wallrunning to swinging to air tricks, all physics based. Now it's hold down a button and go get a drink out of the fridge.
Even if they are a year or more away, Sony needs to announce what there big first party studios are working on, Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Bend, Bluepoint. They need to start building hype and it would give us an idea of what they are working on. Right now it just looks like they don't have anything coming because of their silence.
Uncharted remasters will be the big reveal from naughty dog 😂 think the whole live service cancellations were taking alot of resources. Hopefully some nice titles being worked on though.
Let's stop feeling bad about ourselves and looking at the past with enough nostalgia to turn trash into treasure. Gaming is better now than ever before. The quality of games is better, the amount of experiences available are more, the volume of great titles is high.
About Sony showcases I can feel the fatigue... I used to really look forward to E3 because I knew what I was getting. Some years were better than others, sure, but during that week I knew there would be a lot of marketing and hype to get me excited. Now I've forgotten about Sony showcases. They have been so few and far between, and the last one was such a disappointment. Now that I can't even look forward to Factions I'm not sure what the point is... :/
They'll get me to buy a PS5 Pro if they release a Ghost of Tsushima 2 edition that includes the ultimate edition of the game.
@Specky Ah. It has been pretty sad watching the Americanization and homogenization of the Playstation brand over the last several years.
The mainstream of Western gaming has become toxic, which is why I stay shut up in my indie/Japanese AA/Nintendo bubble. Those have some issues too, but not nearly to the same degree, and I'm rarely disappointed by new releases I'm looking forward to.
@Specky the day they anounce the next open world naughty dog game then im out.
neill drunkmans games are to dark.
amy hennig at least had some happy moments in the first 3 games.
@Nexozi what if it is a ghosts of sushima in canada.
@Thumper only 5 remakes.
I am absolutely thrilled for this!
I predict an absolute riot when we get our first look at
An extended look at an externally made CGI trailer for Fairgame$
Oh man, if we get all of that, we'd be feasting!
Astrobot’s big adventure 🫀
@UltimateOtaku91 yeah I feel like I want to know where we are headed and what is cooking on PlayStation’s grill even if it’s way in the future
@UltimateOtaku91 Geoff Keighley is getting the MHWi deep dive at Summer Game Fest in June
@VaultGuy415 Has that been confirmed? I can't see Geoff showing an in depth deep dive during one of his shows, he usually shows trailers I believe. I think Capcom would rather it be shown at a full showcase or even their own event.
@UltimateOtaku91 After TGA they hinted very strongly the next batch of info would be SGF so people didn't expect it as part of the 20th anniversary stuff. I suspect it will be a gameplay trailer and Ryozo Q&A followed by a longer capcom video on YouTube. Really hoping the Q1 2025 rumors are true!
Probably all games releasing years from now.
This will be the best PlayStation event in years because it will be the first one that neither opens nor closes with Jimbo's mealy mouthed muttering. I don't care if the whole show is just Suicide Squad updates and Fairgame$. It's still the best show in years!
@Pranwell - "Hoping for the Pro announcement, but I feel it could be a couple of months too early for that. Sooner or later though!"
(ANSWER)- You might be right, but a Person can Dream...Lol
I know Everything points to a November Release Date, Buuut👈(Very big But) there are a Few outliers in the Industry that think the PS5 PRO could be Released as Early as September.....Probably not, Buuut👈 a Person can Dream...Lol
(After Thought): I guess that I'm hoping with Sony getting all "Corporate Lawsuit Serious" with their Investigation into "Who Leaked all the PS5 PRO Information Early on", and with Sony being so P.O'd about it, that they'll go ahead & make the PS5 PRO Announcement Early in May's showing, with them being of the Mindset, that it's Better to be in Front of any more Leaked Information, so as to Take Back Contol of the Narrative going Forward until the PS5 PRO Actually Launch's.
Happy Gaming ✌!
@Mikey856 The PS3 is my favorite generation.
I am looking forwards to see what Sony's studio's have been working on . Hopefully they'll announce the PS5 PRO too.
Tbh I'm currently interested only in what is Bluepoint doing...no hype for the showcase atm, but will be definitely watching it.
Also good opportunity to introduce new head of PS, but this is probably too soon...
Didn't this news break on Monday? Are we sure this isn't an April Fool's Day joke?
This was an amazing beginning of the year, but stellar blade and elder ring dlc are the last ones I’m waiting for, so I need something more
What do I want? What the showcase should have been last year, focusing more on their other studios that are working on single player games. I get why the live service games were there, and that's fine, but to have basically nothing else there was an enormous disappointment and fail on Sony's part. If one happens next month, hopefully it finally delivers as there's no way these developers are just sitting there playing solitaire and/or watching porn instead of developing games.
As always… I’m going to pray for anything Bloodborne related, and be disappointed. But seriously… what has Bluepoint been up to since the Demons Souls remake???
It's going to be a relentless negativity fest in here, as seems to be the norm these days, but I'm always looking forward to potential new reveals.
I believe Sony's first party studios still have a lot to give this gen, and eventually they will. People get way too hysterical about these things. Just have some patience, and play some of the many, many, many other brilliant games out there.
@The_ghostmen
Well they were Indiana Jones type of games.
TLOU is more of a The Road type game.
They're just different genres. There are happy moments, but they're small and justified.
Not need to MCU makeover games like TLOU lol
@OmegaStriver mine too lol. But launch was horrific lol
@bestuardo I’m still praying bluepoint are gonna hit us with a remake
Much of the same then I expect, more open world dross, sprinkle in some indie dross. Followed by some live service crap, hey business as usual at the Sony camp. Sony are really disappointing me this gen. No really amazing single player story driven games, nothing on PSVR 2, just relying on 3rd party support. Damn I spent 530 quid on this damn thing, at least give me Astrobot FFS. The potential for VR is incredible but obviously they don't want to invest in there own tech. Lol.
@Ainu20 plenty of reason for negativity, Especially on the VR2 front for me. I invested a lot of money on this tech. It feels like Sony don't give a ***** about it. Unfortunately if they expect it to sell you need to take chances, & invest & get creative.
@Specky totally agree, everything that made the PlayStation brand brilliant. Seems to be dwindling away every gen. I want stuff like Shadow of the colossus, a new Ridge racer, Motorstorm. Resistance, Killzone, some ground breaking PSVR 2 games. Sony & most devs need to realise that gaming has a bigger demographic of gamers. Not all of us want the endless open world. Soulslike. Live service dross. If you like that fine, but think of the bigger picture. But I'm not naive enough to realise its all about money, unfortunately that's why the industry sucks now.
Someone said Motorstorm. Heck, take the old PS3 Motorstorm games, remake them for PS5 with PS5-level graphics, and I'd buy them again.
Yes, it would be better to build something new. But I miss arcade racing games. There needs to be something between GT and kart racers (and while I wish The Crew Motorfest was it, that game just falls totally flat for me for some reason).
@Axelay71
You just made me sad.
I miss Motorstorm Apocalypse so much lol
@Specky exactly what im saying, imagine Motorstorm on PS5. But they don't care, because it won't make enough money I expect. This is why Greed is killing the industry. It certainly isn't about what gamers want its about what they want.
OK, well this is my wishlist, considering what I’m pretty sure is all still in Sony’s purview. Despite closing down studios, betting heavily on live service, making more hardware than software and spending 250m+ on games, hopefully there’s still some pennies for this:
Killzone 1-3 remaster collection
Resistance 1-3 remaster collection
Motorstorm 1-3 remaster collection
Astrobot Rescue Mission announced backwards compatible
Blood and Truth announced backwards compatible
Jak and Daxter full current-gen remake
Driveclub 2 announced
Ico remake (by Bluepoint)
Wipeout 2098 (or whatever, just a new Wipeout)
Days Gone 2 (give Bend some respect and take ‘em off whatever support nonsense you’ve got them on)
I mean, a man can dream.
@ThriIIho its crazy how popular ps2 remasters were on ps3 , but i'm pretty surprised how all these ps3 games haven't gotten a remaster on ps4 or ps5. infamous , killzone , resistance, motorstorm , ratchet and clank.
Still waiting to see something new for the Kotor Remake.
With Spider man 2 being out now I expect we’ll get something new on Wolverine.
Hoping to see a full gameplay showcase for SH2 Remake at some point.
Dino Crisis Remake would be nice.
Sly remastered trilogy would also be nice but I don’t know who would do it though.
Death Stranding 2 will most likely be there as it’s due out next year
