We doubt we were alone in wondering whether some kind of transmogrification system could reach fashion-conscious Helldivers 2 players grasping hands, but sadly, that won't be the case. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt put this particular pipe dream to bed, definitively stating, "We are not doing transmog."
Transmog, sometimes known more appropriately as transmogrification, is a mechanic some games employ that allows players the statistical benefit of a specific set of gear or equipment while presenting the visual/aesthetic look of another. Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XIV both enjoy robust transmog systems.
Pilestedt responded to a user on Twitter and said they won't implement something similar in Helldivers 2 because "it doesn't make sense. Equipment looks different because it has different effects. Swapping one for the other is like having an apple that tastes like bacon or the other way around."
We aren't sure we necessarily agree or even understand that metaphor, but there is undoubtedly space within the current framework to tinker with how equipped gear works. What about the ability to swap out perks for specific, limited alternatives? Surely, there is some wiggle room there.
What do you think? Does transmog not make sense in Helldivers 2? Let us know in the comments section below.

Can’t tell if disingenuous or a moron… a system about making gear look different in a PVE game… apples… bacon? If you’re gonna shoot the idea down at least make sense.
An apple that tastes like bacon? Now that’s some life DLC I’d buy.
I agree it's not needed, this isn't an RPG. Besides the stats aren't that important anyway. Arrowhead have said previously that you just pick what you want. Weapons and Stratagems are more vital.
I means it's fine in destiny 2 and monster hunter world, I don't see the problem.
I can see why you wouldn't want bacon to taste like an apple by why for the love of Kratos would you not want an apple or anything else to taste like bacon? That doesn't make sense.
It goes against the point of the game. You ARE a COG in a nonsensical war and you're nothing but a slab of meat going to the grinder.
Destiny and MHW have characters you get attached too as part of the MMO-esque structure they aim for.
It wouldn't hurt the game by allowing it so players can craft their own style. However the game does not need it and I have to admit I like the way arrowhead are not being told what to include in their game. It's their game and their vision and its working out perfectly for them and I like the way they have monetised the add on packs as in very fairly priced and includes gear that is actually useful and not just cosmetic. Spreading democracy has never been so much fun.
So basically its like layered armour from MH then. Stats of 1 armour whilst aesthetically looking like another? I dont really see the issue either way. Sure, some armour looks better than others but i dont really notice any difference when im being stomped by a bile titan on being charged down by a charger.
Id much rather have a weapon that actually seems to damage the Automaton. Theys guys seem harder than ever. Had 3 terrible rounds against them last night.
This guy seems to underestimate how much demand there is for apples to taste like bacon
''Cool vs efficient'' is the choice that you've always made in these games. This smells of gamer entitlement imo.
@Ultrasmiles To be completely fair with Destiny 2 they do not let you transmog exotic armor, but only with specific cosmetics made for it because of the same reason that Arrowhead is making. It is to let you know what your team mates or the enemy player in pvp is running.
This guy is 100% right. I haven't seen tailor in my country, where I can come and ask him "Please could you make this leather coat look like sweater?". Transmog is the most useless mechanics in games.
@djlard I mean who cares? Transmog is there for fun and sometimes people want to have good stats without looking like a goofball in a cutscene or gameplay.
A game for everyone is a game for no one, right?
They had a vision and they are going to defend and follow that vision. They aren't going to give in just because some people want what they got in other games (people who btw also think being toxic against the devs is ok because they were always toxic in their previous communities. Something you didn't see in the Helldivers 1 small community).
The funniest part about the weird analogy is that it's actually quite good if you see it from another angle. Just think about all the vegan recipes that try to make food look and taste like meat. If you are vegan there shouldn't be any purpose for that.
@Nepp67 they care, for many of them and that of course includes de CEO this is the work of their lives, it isn't just another product for mass consumption. Btw being a goofball is actually part of the Helldivers concept lol.
I enjoy the transmog in FF XIV and I use it all the time. I had never considered it for Helldivers though. Options are nice to have, but I can live without it.
Any light armour + the shield generator, this is still my go to setup.
Edit: Some Ratchet and Clank decals for my helmet or mech would be fun.
Fine by me, but being able to apply colour filters to some of the items would be nice. There are plenty of helmets or capes that I would like to wear with other sets but wont because the colours clash (to my eye at least). Not sure if that's what he meant by transmog - I agree that taking the medic perk and applying it to a suit that was dripping in grenades wouldn't make a lick of sense.
@GymratAmarillo I'm quite aware by the goofy nature of helldivers. But it wouldn't hurt to have shaders or have the helmet match the colors of the suit you're wearing so it doesn't look out of place
Sure what next? Snoop Dogg and Nicki Minaj running around with bongs? No thanks, keep playing Call of Duty. We keep our liber-tea from Activision.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I'm rocking the erupter and the stalwart combo. I also take the shield backpack. My trusty load out although I still get f'ckd up..
This is the only time I've seen gamers interested in talking about apples.
Ah... the usual gamer mentality of "I like this game.... but I want it to play like every other game i play". Good on the devs for sticking to their vision of the game, and not just doing what the people want for brownie points. But this is always why a game becoming mainstream, popular, or being a flavor of the months isn't always a good thing.
So they've never heard if Applewood smoked bacon? Most of the gear in the games looks exactly the same.
The real reason is probably cause they refused to put anything to do with the demands from the LGBTQ+ groups as they wanted pride capes etc. And then someone on Reddit argued a Diablo style transmog system which again would deal the same thing with colouring parts of your armour.
The game has a stealth mechanic that actually works well imagine trying that with bright colours etc
The gear does look the same in ways but the biggest issue really is the buffs they are all the same and it hasn't got many. From either 2+ stims or grenades or 30% more thrown distance when people want fire damage resistances, I would love to have armour that has Heat padding so blizzard doesn't effect you as bad as it does especially when playing higher difficulty and your swarmed by bots.
We really need new buffs and really need ones for helmets heat vision or night vision on a limited battery that recharged would be cool like the Helmet light in Halo
