Ubisoft has shared the full reveal of Assassin's Creed Shadows with a nearly four-minute cinematic trailer, announcing a PS5 version and the release date of 15th November 2024. You can catch the trailer above.
The pitch is as follows: "Live the intertwined stories of Naoe, an adept shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, the powerful African samurai of historical legend. Against the backdrop of the turbulent late Sengoku period, this remarkable duo will discover their common destiny as they usher in a new era for Japan."
You'll be able to play as either the shinobi assassin Naoe or samuari Yasuke. With a backdrop of feudal Japan, you will have the chance to explore "spectacular castle towns and bustling ports to peaceful shrines and pastoral landscapes", all of which will feature "unpredictable weather, changing seasons, and reactive environments". You can switch between playing as either character at any time, allowing you to approach quests and missions in various ways. You can tackle most of the main quest as either protagonist, but some missions will be exclusive to each one.
"Master complementary playstyles of two fully realized protagonists, approach quests with whichever character you prefer, as each possesses their own respective progression, stats, skills, and gear."
As is customary for Ubisoft games, there's a standard version (£69.99 / $69.99), a Gold Edition including the season pass for two expansions and three days of early access (£94.99 / $109.99) and then an Ultimate Edition (£114.99 / $129.99) that bundles in character and hideout packs, skill points, and a Photo Mode filter on top of the DLC pass and early access.
In a follow-up video, you can learn more about the two protagonists Naoe and Yasuke. The former is a Japanese shinobi while the latter is based on a real-life samurai of the same name. Catch it below:

Looks terrific! Really enjoyed Origns and Odyssey excited to give this a go at release!

Looked pretty awesome to me.
I just hope it's Assassiny.
Wasn't Yasuke just a sword bearer and not a real samurai? I read that he was like a pet or a jester to the daimyo Oda Nobunaga, you know for fun because he is exotic looking for the Japanese people in that era.
Either way the game could be fun. For now, I am not that hyped.
@Zuljaras Yea, but where's the fun in that?
I'll wait to see gameplay before I decide, but it looks interesting.
So the leaks were real. I feel like this is a skip in my camp.
Don’t like the look of the female protagonist
@Icey664 depends if you choose to view it like that. You could also argue that two “generic” Japanese male protagonists would be predictable in a game set in feudal Japan.
Yasuke is a real historical figure and one, I would imagine, that not many have heard of. I also feel that a female character fits the role of an assassin for this time period pretty well:
“The exploits of the kunoichi were first recorded into a 17th century handbook called the Bansensukai, which described kunoichi-no-jutsu (a technique to use a female). According to the text, kunoichi operated as infiltrators, spies and assassins.”
Okay, I won't lie, that is a pretty sweet CGI trailer though we still need that gameplay trailer
This will be pre ordered
This looks like fun!
@Neither_scene
I'm all for a badass female protag (Kassandra was bae). And I know Yasuke is based off a real person, but there was no evidence he was actually a samurai, so I feel like they should have just gone all in with 2 japanese characters, because I do like the idea of having a Samurai and Ninja, but you can't have anyone other than a Japanese person be a true samurai, that's why it feels like forced "inclusion/diversity".
I'll wait for Ghost of Tsushima 2, thanks.
After a long AC hiatus I may well jump back in with this one!

Nope, not playing this. We’re supposed to blend in, not be a singular distinct foreigner who was never a Smaurai.
I’ll take Japanese protagonist. This is getting ridiculous.
Removed - discussing moderation
@Neither_scene Predictable isn’t a bad thing, it’s historical and makes sense. AC protags also aren’t real people, if you need a real person that happened once to justify the oddity you’re doing it wrong.
it looks great! Just promise me there won't be multiplayer mode!
This looks great, so funny to watch people cry over it too.
As a huge fan of Assassin's Creed, I just can't wait. This game will be awesome.
No thanks. It's not even Yasuke but all the other ***** why I'm not in the mood for AC shadows.
Sony should announce Ghost of Tsushima 2 as soon as possible to teach Ubisoft a lesson about what's important in an AC in Japan.
@Jaz007 in most games now you can wear glowing god armour and ride spectral horses. I don't think blending has been a thing for a while.
@Icey664 It’s actually not strictly true that only Japanese can be samurai. The Samurai were a caste in Japanese society into which, generally, foreigners were not permitted to belong. However, a daimyo could bestoe the Samurai status on a foreigner in some cases. Despite being incredibly uncommon and a rarity it has, apparently, happened a couple of times before in history.
I mean...yeah, I'm fully onboard, I can't lie Haha Super stoked!
@MidnightDragonDX You are right
Can't wait for Assassin's Creed India where the main protagonist is Mahatma Gandhi (a pacifist) turned into assassin because there is no fun otherwise Also he should eat lots of beef
Looks good. Or it looks like an Assassin's Creed game I guess. I still just find it funny that this is the AC game people have been asking for the longest, and in the time it took for Ubisoft to make it, Sony already ran two full laps around them with Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin.
Genuinely tired of seeing cinematic trailers.
Yep, good concept. Japan being closed to foreigners makes the Assassins and Templars fairly difficult to weave into history but the kunoichi are a great fit for the Assassins. I’m gonna assume that the Portuguese will be the Templars.
They just can't commit to a famale only lead can they. Either way i'm excited and i shell be getting it day 1.
We don't know how much this game is going to screw around players with mtx and online requirements. None of this stuff matters for me until we know that.
@EchoRange and it’s been terrible how the RPGs have gone. We also just had mirage, which had blending and a reasonable looking protag. There’s a difference between stupid armor that shouldn’t be added to the game and a character who is inherently incapable of keeping the creed.
The game interests me, but the price does not. These games are getting way too expensive now. If it is another one that only lasts 20 hours or so then it is extremely difficult to justify paying full price.
As I have done with Star Wars Outlaws, I shall skip my usual pre-order, and wait until the game is around 50% off. Doing this will also ensure that any early problems are sorted, which is an added bonus.
It's a shame that Ubisoft have gone so aggressive with their pricing because I usually pre-order their games, but for the price of the Ultimate edition (or thereabouts), it used to be possible to buy the Collector's Edition, which would have included a statue...
Even if I have been disappointed in AC's recent games; I will 100% be getting this. I've been waiting for AC Japan for far too long and you get to play as Yasuke!? (granted I'll mainly play the Ninja but still cool!)
Looks cool! I'm an AC vet so naturally I will be playing as Naoe pretty much the entire way. Yasuke does look pretty damn cool too though. I'm also happy to see they are bringing back the weather season actually affecting the game in meaningful ways like AC3 did back in the day.
Excited to see how it actually looks in action next month.
Would be interested if they do another one of those “discovery tour” modes where you don’t play the game you just explore the area. For some reason I could just never get into the AC games.

Even though a lot of information about Yasuke is still a topic of debate (which is why he's a good choice) some historians say he was a mercenary before his arrival in Japan so he had combat experience.
There's also some experts who say he was indeed present in a few japanese battles, so he was definitely not a pet or jester (don't know where people got that from).
He also acted as a bodyguard, so his combat experience is not in question.
My only complain is the use of shuriken as a weapon.
Looking forward to it but it had been reported in the last 24 hours by Tom Henderson there will be mini battle passes in the game for cosmetics.

I wish these things wouldn't exist in single player games.
@Zuljaras Hell I'd buy it! Assassins Creed India GOTY
This looks great. I loved Origins, and I have a feeling this might be on the same level or even top it.
Assassin's Creed games these days have a 30% chance of being decent and a 70% chance of sucking... don't like those odds so I'll wait until it costs £10 in 3 years and even then I'll think twice
Finally, an AC game I have slightly more than 0 interest in.
I wish the stellar production values of Assassin’s Creed could be paired with the stellar combat and progression of Rise of the Ronin.
It’s a great CGI trailer, but I need more details. I’ve had my fill of third person action RPG games. I recently got the platinum for Rise of the Ronin so I need a pretty compelling incentive to jump back into that type of environment. Furthermore, I would like more information regarding its open world. I loved Origins and got the platinum for it, but if it’s anywhere the size of Odyssey or Valhalla then I am out — I just can’t do those types of games any more. Nonetheless, I am curious about this game and would love to see how they tackle combat, exploration, and mission structure.
But we've already got a George.
Could be fun, but I never get that hyped off of a cinematic trailer. Gonna wait for actual gameplay to see if it looks alright. Doubt I'd pay full price for AC at this point tho
Here’s hoping it’s close to as good as Ghost. I like having two different characters. And it looks like they have very different play styles. Praying it isn’t bloated like the others.
For a CGI trailer, that was pretty cool looking. I’ll likely preorder this one, just waiting to see what other games are announced in showcase season before I start making plans. AC has a chance to shine if the release slate is relatively quiet for the second half of the year.
Yes to the gameplay
No to the battlepasses
I don't wanna play as an Afrosamurai. Might be something to skip for me-.-'
An Assassin's Creed in historical Japan is cool. Surprised there are two playable characters though. I wonder if you will be forced to play as both or can you choose? I will probably prefer to be the Shinobi most of the time.
@Zuljaras There is already a Assasins Creed India
@DennisReynolds They did for AC Liberty
@jorel262
According to IGN it sounds like each character will have a few missions specifically tailored to them but for the vast majority of the game the player will be able to pick whomever they wish to play as.
I haven't played an Assassins Creed since Unity/Black Flag (whatever came later), but I'm interested in getting this one for its setting. Hopefully they scrap the RPG elements from the previous 3 games.
@pharos_haven Ok, then Assassin's Creed Curry is the name of the game
People threw quite the hissyst fit when Nioh 1st revealed. People were upset that a white guy was getting the role of despite the setting.
Historical Japan is so cool to many for a reason.The Japanese people....not random one offs.
It feels really cheap to transplant a very long awaited Japanese AC with non Japanese characters....
@CallMeDuraSouka you think people are not going to lose their minds over this? Lol.
@McBurn he doesn't have an afro.. oh wait, I know what you are.
Ahhh one more thing. The physical disc will require internet connection to install because Ubi wants to sell their "Play 3 day early pass".
So, this is 100% NO buy if they do not change that.
Also to the folks upset about them playing a little fast and loose with history (in particular, with Yasuke it seems)...you do realize AC has always done that right?
I'm pretty sure George Washington didn't hire a Native American assassin to assist in the American Revolution.
I'm pretty sure Leonardo DaVinci's flying machine was not used to aid an Italian assassin in his mission.
It's called Historical Fiction. Consider looking it up please.
@EchoRange Yeah, well you know what I mean xD
just a little too unimmersive for me to play as a black samurai
@pharos_haven Not a mainline game.
@Korgon Good to hear you can mostly play as the character of your choosing. Thanks.
Removed - inappropriate
Looking forward to this. Gonna play it with everything turned off on the HUD. Hopefully it looks as good as Valhalla.
According to PSN, a permanent internet connection is required. yes I think the game will die faster than Lord Shimura can say that Yasuke has no honor.
Seriously buy Rise of the Ronin or wait for Ghost of Tsushima 2. Ubisoft should finally get the bill for all the crap it does to the games industry.
@Korgon
Are you saying the italian assassin didn't actually drive a rennaissance tank made of wood?
This looks like a Ubisoft game.
@Korgon but, but, but, my immersion!!! Or some s*** 😭😭😭😭
I'm kind of bummed the latest ones are nowhere near as bat s*** crazy with their historical fiction now haha. Of course, there's still ancient aliens possessing people as their norse god personas or whatever, but that's with the made up characters.
I also think seeing a culture from another's perspective actually enhances the world it is portraying too. They will get to explore the differences and similarities and experience things as an outsider being welcomed in to new surroundings. And tbh I'd much rather play as a stranger in a strange land rather than just any old random person who just happens to be local. So many more possibilities.
The fact that we get to be a Samurai like no other should excite people, and we can still be a Ninja for the assassin stuff too. Seems like the exact right balance for what people have wanted from an AC game all round.
That assasins creed shadows looks amazing.im definitely playing as yasuke.word up son
Well my interest in this game just fell off a cliff. Ubisoft just can’t help themselves can they?
It would have been great with just the woman.
@Ravix @Lup
Right? My examples were some of the more tame stuff that has happened in the series.
When you really think about it AC has always been pretty bat **** crazy. But that's part of the fun! 😄
@LikelySatan Oh they are already, just pointing out how tone deaf developers/publishers can be, even Japanese ones.
Definitely excited for this. I was impressed, and I could care less if this version of Yasuke is accurate or not. What matters most is whether it's a fun game or not. I know what I'll be asking for this Christmas...
I am ready to move on from European based geographical settings, which is why I enjoyed Origins. Looking forward to this game.
@Neither_scene “Recent research by Mie University historians Yūji Yamada, Katsuya Yoshimaru, and others indicates that there are no historical records of the existence of female ninja who conducted reconnaissance and subversive activities in the same manner as their male counterparts. According to Yoshimaru, kunoichi came to mean "female ninja" in the creative works largely due to the influence of Futaro Yamada's Ninpōchō series.” Per Wikipedia
No gameplay. Pointless. Nothing to see here until they show us the actual game.
I was hoping for an East Asian male and female lead so I am a little disappointed. Yasuke would have been a good side character or DLC.
I can’t be too mad though. AC games have never been about realism. They’ve always been heavily sanitised/fantasy versions of historical periods. It’s why they’re so popular and completely forgettable.
Oof 70 pounds? I mean I'll get it but I'm not paying 70 for it.
Day one buy for me. I like pretty much all the AC games.
Is the name really pronounced Yasookay, like the people in the video are pronouncing it? Asking coz it doesn't sound right to me.
I thought it would have the same pronunciation as Sasuke, but with a Y.
@McBurn the gods don't ruin the immersion?

@UltimateOtaku91
I think this one is supposed to be a return to the RPG style of more recent ACs. If you want a modern AC that is more 'classic' style, Mirage is actually pretty good.
It's funny to see some people throw a hissy fit about Yasuke and said they don't want to play this game because it's not like the history book. But AC never been about 100% historical accuracy lol. I'm sure Da Vinci never created a glider for an assassin irl lmao.
Anyway...the last AC game that i played was Syndicate which i quite enjoyed and this one looks like that with dual protags. Maybe i'll get the game but when it get a big discount.
Removed - inappropriate
Hmm , well i would certainly hope this follows origins in that we get to play naoe for 95% of the time just like with bayek
They finally did it.

That trailer was fantastic. I haven’t been this excited to play Assassin’s creed in so long… but this is gonna be day one collector’s edition for me.
@Contimaloris talking like "getting honoured by Japan" is such an achievement sounds so weeb.
@EchoRange Not a bad achievement to have since people were bitching that Sucker Punch was "too white" to have made Ghost of Tsushima...
The trailer is fantastic! The two characters could create a fun mix of gameplay of the older AC stealth and more open world brutal action. Definitely curious. although the required internet connection for installation is a massive bummer and pushing it from a possible day one to play it on ps plus
@EchoRange Well they don't for me. It's a subjective thing I admit.
Will try it whenever it comes on PS Plus or Gamepass
Well me when I get hit with the Ubisoft enjoyer accusations when I pay them 220 in a year for two gold editions of games I actually wanna play that are interesting and look really cool: 😔
I come from the Xbox sister site
AC Japan is the first one I'll skip intentionally even if the gold version "just for you" offer is less than a cheap chain pizza down the years. The lack of East Asian male representation is a concern.
The last six male leads of AC games have been native/ethnic matches of their lands whether it be Greece, Egypt, Scandinavia, UK, Middle East, or France. Yet somehow, Ubi can't be bothered to have a male East Asian as a lead. I've heard that song and dance before. I'm not even disappointed. I've seen the same scenario a few too many times to even be surprised.
PS related: I now feel bad for hunting down a deep sale on GoT:Director's Cut for the household. The representation alone deserved full deluxe msrp pricing for that game.
