Bethesda will once again be updating a near decade-old game next week. It's currently prepping a Fallout 4 patch that promises "new options for graphics and performance settings", for release on Monday the 13th May. The update will also feature "further fixes and improvements", but we don't have the full patch notes yet.
Currently, the PS5 version of Fallout 4 has three graphics settings: a 60 frames-per-second performance mode targeting a dynamic 4K resolution, a 30fps quality mode at native 4K, and a special 40fps mode for 1440p displays. It'll be interesting to see what this new update brings to the table.
As for what "further fixes and improvements" might mean, there are a few weird visual bugs that this patch could clean up, like certain assets not being properly textured. Outside of that, though, your guess is as good as ours.

would love it if fallout 3 and new vegas were available to play on ps5 (steaming the non GOTY ps3 versions doesnt really cut it)

If PS5 is connected to 120hz TV, then Quality mode targets 40fps. Similar as it is in Sony 1st party games.
In general PS5 has all options available, only in Menu settings it is not clearly stated. I expect this update will provide clear info in menu settings.
My guess is that the new graphics option will be 1440p/60/Ultra setting in-game rather than having to set it at the system level to force the game to do it.
@GamingFan4Lyf Here's hoping.
I wonder if it will look different to the ps4 version 🤔 so far I've not seen any difference other than the frame rate
@REALAIS I have a 120hz tv with a 2.1 HDMI.. is the 40fps mode the better one? I’m new to having a good tv.. I’m 34 and just now getting with the fps program
@Icey664 check Digital Foundry comparision video. There are some changes but in general, those changes are minimal. It is never promoted as remaster or remake. So there is not significant enough changes.
@WolfyTn It depends. Your situation provides option to have Quality mode with 40fps, rather than only 30fps for regular TV. I tried myself and it still wasnt good enough for me, I choose Performance mode and 60fps, because that is more comfortable for me.
If you can play game in quality mode without issues, than it would be best. Yes, it is old game and in close up there is no big difference, but quality mode shines in long distance rendering in Fallout 4 game.
I am 34 myself ) I am playing on Samsung S95B for 1,5 years. I am dreaming to upgrade to S95D in next 12 months
I am actually shocked they are fixing their patch screw up. They must be serious about going all in for fallout. The executives must be seeing that shows the popularity and want to capitalize on it.
@WolfyTn The higher the FPS the better but that comes at the cost of lower graphics settings. In many cases, though, the worse graphics aren't noticeably worse.
The idea with 40fps is that many games can't run at 60 - or they can but it's inconsistent. Typically you'd limit the game to 30fps because an inconsistent framerate feels bad, so it's better to have it always be 30 than be all over the place in the 40-60 range. The framerate of the game needs to fit into the refresh rate of the TV (how many times a second it updates the image, measured in hertz or hz). If the PS5 is sending 40 frames a second, that can't fit equally into 60 refreshes per second. 30 does obviously fit evenly into 60, though.
However (sorry, this explanation is taking longer than I thought, ha) if you have a 120hz TV then 40fps does fit in evenly, with each frame lasting 3 refreshes. So if a game can't manage a consistent 60, capping it to 40 is better - and better than capping it at 30.
@Matroska Long response? Yes.. but also very informative, ty
@Matroska
Yeah, ‘frame pacing’ is as important as framerate…..
How big in storage space is the PS5 version of Fallout 4 at the moment?
@TheAmbienWalrus
Oooooh that’s actually smaller than I was expecting you to say.
Nice to know.
I’ll probably upgrade my game of the year edition soon probably in the next few months as I never got round to starting it, it’s still sealed since I got a few years ago just never had the chance to go on it though with playing other things.
@trev666
Agreed. But then they'd need to make a 64-bit version of the engines. Like they did for Skyrim SE. And every effort seems to be too much for Bethesda these days.
Two mods, 'Disable God Rays', and 'Clear Skies', will vastly improve the graphics. Gone is the washed out look, the sun glare, and volumetric lighting blur. Clear Skies ditches the rain and fog.
I just started a replay on my old Pro and 1080p tv. Boost steadies the frame rates, the motion setting my tv has eliminates the camera motion blur, and those two mods makes it pretty. The only downside to using even those basic mods is that trophies are disabled.
Fallout 4 on consoles definitely needs some of the graphics options provided to PC users.
Glad I played Stellar Blade first. Had a feeling it’d get another update fast. Playing a ton of DQXI S before I jump into Fallout 4 so I’m happy about this 😎😎
No amount of miniscule updates will ever make Fallout 4 good though. Sorry Bugthesda. Can't even say that they're trying. The "updated" graphical improvements are barely noticeable according to what I've seen on the comparison videos and the whole game still looks ugly.
Please just stop screwing up Fallout: London you jerks
Also stop working on Starfield for the love of Christ
@TruestoryYep Fallout 4 is Citizen Kane or Mozart or Tolstoy compared to Starfield
Of course it's no good for us poor plebs who got fallout 4 when it was part of essentials.... Ah well. Too much to play these days anyway.... 🙃
@Frmknst I said I had the game. I didn't say I played it
I added the game to my library when it was part of the PlayStation essentials collection which has since been discontinued. As far as I am aware it does not include any sort of upgrade to a ps5 version. I'm not particularly interested in playing it either. But it would have been nice for everyone who had a copy of the game free or not to have had the update.
You don't have to understand why people play certain games either. If that person enjoys it then that is all that matters. Don't worry about it. Carry on.
@Frmknst, there is no argument in the matter of taste.
Well I expect a new Digital Foundry vid on this soon after then
