The future seems bright once more for the Armored Core franchise, as FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has shared in a new interview that there's a "strong will" inside the developer to create more. Recently talking to IGN Japan (translated by FandomWire), he said the Armored Core series remains "very important to FromSoftware", and there's a "strong will to continue it in the future. I believe Armored Core 6 was a success."
Following its release last year, it was revealed Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon sold 2.8 million copies as of October 2023. There's a good chance the sixth mainline entry has now surpassed the three million sales milestone, but Miyazaki says the titles still have room for improvement. Claiming "not everything was perfect" in Armored Core 6, he said: "There is still room for improvement, so I have no intention of stopping there."
FromSoftware will have its focus set firmly on Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree for now, set to release for PS5, PS4 on 21st June 2024. However, after that's out the door, it sounds like more Armored Core might well be on the way.
In our Armored Core 6 PS5 review, we awarded a 7/10 rating and praised its combat, deep mech customisation, and memorable boss fights. "Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon admirably weds satisfying combat with extensive mech customisation, with short missions letting you quickly experiment with new ideas and builds. However, once you've settled on an optimal loadout, it's those same quick-fire levels that begin to blunt the fun."

Picked 6 up at launch but still to actually play it unfortunately. Can’t wait though and once I clear my PS3 backlog by the end of 2024, that’ll be one of the games I’ll be making a beeline for.
@colonelkilgore Out of curiosity, how big is your PS3 backlog?
Armored Core 6 was a lot of fun, I loved it.
At first it seemed daunting to try for an S-rank on every mission, but I recommend people go for it as it spices up the challenge and adds a lot of variety to the gameplay.
Don't get me wrong, you'll have to have a high threshold for frustration on certain levels, but it's super satisfying when you figure out how to ace them and the requirement to create very specific builds for certain challenges is a fun element which can mostly just be bypassed when playing through the game normally.
I was super hyped for VI, and then started playing it, hit that first helicopter boss that cheats and rides most of the battle outside the zone where being able to get the right moments to kill it seems more down to luck than skill, and found it to be the most frustrating parts of Souls (which I'm not a fan of) stuffed into AC. While I did eventually bet that, it took way to many attempts and waiting for the battle to start way too many times, and it pretty much broke my patience threshold for the game and I didn't go back to it again after that. Someday I will, but it was frustrating enough to dampen my enthusiasm. Still, won't lie that this for some reason seems like happy news.
@Czar_Khastik haven’t got too many games left now, maybe 10-15… it’s been weighing on me for a few years and early this year I decided that I’m just gonna clear it. So it’s been predominantly PS3 games this year and I’ve had a surprisingly great time so far. I just hope the PS3 lasts until the last of the games are plat’d tbh 😅
6 was my first and only foray into the series. I really didn’t know what to expect but came away very impressed. Some of the fastest, twitchiest, aggressive and most exhilarating fights I’ve experienced in a game. I will definitely play the next one should it materialize.
@colonelkilgore I miss the sound of creaking plastic when the PS3 phat cools down, lol.
@NEStalgia They may have patched that boss slightly to re-balance it, because I remember having the same exact experience on Day 1... Although it's hard to say, because I know I probably wasn't using the best possible strategy for it at that time either.
Either way, the key is to use your speed boost to fly directly into his face and attack the cockpit with melee strikes. In between, just focus on finding cover/avoiding damage.
@NEStalgia me too… my phat died over 10 years ago 😔 currently rocking a foreman-grill but have my eye on the picking up a slim for the complete set, just in case my grill dies
@colonelkilgore "grill" LOL! My Phat hasn't been booted in a century or two, but last I ran it it's still in mint shape. I had 4 Slims, three of which the disc drive failed. I never did buy the grill, though. It always looked to me like it was made of milk jugs glued together
@Troubbble I think I played it on recent patches and it was still bad. That's definitely the same strategy I was using (and EVENTUALLY worked), but it feels like whether it works or not is largely RNG, based on how much time it spends in the zone where you can't reach it, and really just what flight pattern it takes determining how much you can actually avoid attacks and/or not overshoot when boosting. It's a remarkably unfair fight because you're basically not in control of its parameters at all. Mind boggling they open the game with that!
I think it would be made a lot easier though if you could have a true lock-on. It has that R3 "target lock assist" or whatever, but it unlocks as soon as you turn away, which you tend to do a lot when fighting a helicopter circling around you. It might be one of those cases where it's the hardest boss of the game because you can't even build a loadout for it yet, but it's a nasty gate right at the start.
@colonelkilgore well, it's not huge but you'll need to plat 2 games a month. My younger self would say challenge accepted but now any play time is good enough. Anyhow, good luck with the backlog and also good luck to your ps3
@Czar_Khastik cheers buddy and… challenge accepted 🫡
Great... now can we have Tenchu back too?
