Mortal Kombat 2, the imaginatively-titled sequel to the 2021 live-action movie, is on the way, and it now has a firm theatrical release date. As reported by Variety, the film will be available to watch in IMAX from 24th October, 2025.
The sequel is being directed by Simon McQuoid, who also directed the first film, while writing duties fall to Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire). Actors Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Damon Herriman, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford are set to feature in this adaptation of the beloved NetherRealm series.
Following the success of the first movie, McQuoid made comments about introducing more well-known characters to the cast, including Johnny Cage and Kitana. He also says he aims to have the sequel embrace Mortal Kombat's "weird universe" and be unpredictable for fans.

First one was a garbage fire suffice to say I'm looking forward to the KombatKings review of this one ๐
After watching the intro to the first (reboot) movie i was sure they nailed it. The opening scene with Sub zero and Scorpion was amazing. Then they introduced the lead and the silly story and it was all down hill from there. Should have done a more serious reboot of the OG movie. How hard can it be with so much amazing lore to choose from.
Loved the first one, showed my mate and brother it and watched it multiple times since.
Can't wait for this one.
Really enjoyed the fatalities of the first one, but hopefully they have an actual tournament this time. Maybe kill off the main character too.
The first one was entertaining IMO but objectively stupid. Even if they just repeat that, I'd still watch it. I mean just look at the MK lore, it's not A+ storytelling. I don't expect much else from the movies.
Really hope that Cole character dies early or is heavily stripped back as he was awful.
@DennisReynolds this. Pointless character. They could easily have just focused on one of the original characters as a lead.
Hope itโs as much dumb fun as the first.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Exactly; we were tricked. The opening was solid then it was just 90mins of bad cosplay and awful, awful story with like zero action or good fights. To this day I still much prefer the original film; itโs corny as hell but at least itโs FUN. I donโt have much hope for this sequel but you never know.
I enjoyed the 1st one even though I don't think it's a very good film
@JB_Whiting and most of all..... it was about the tournament. Mortal kombat is the name of the actual tournament so how can you have a fil called Mortal kombat with no tournament ๐๐
@JB_Whiting Also the fight scenes in the OG are really solid especially the final battle.
Surely it can be worse than annihilation... right? ๐
"McQuoid made comments about introducing more well-known characters to the cast, including Johnny Cage and Kitana."
Could have introduced any number of established characters with existing backstories instead of creating Cole.
@Kidfunkadelic83 totally agree, the film was epic and such a great tone for the first scene, they really could of made a serious and true story just on the actual games lore and yet we had to get a cheesy and quite biazzare below average story.
I think out everything whats come out, that has got to be the worst of the adaptations.
This and Uncharted.
Both ok but wasn't even worth investing.
Problem is they both made great money so who am I to say hahaha.
