With support for Battlefield 2042 slowly coming to a close, both its players and publisher EA are looking towards the franchise's future. 2042 launched a few years back in 2021, and was pretty much panned for its lacking modes and approach to live service elements — but it's received a lot of updates since. Still, the shooter has never quite been able to shake its somewhat shoddy reputation, and so the next Battlefield's got work to do.
EA sounds rather optimistic, however. In the company's latest financial report, CEO Andrew Wilson boasted that the next title is being put together by "the largest Battlefield team in franchise history". Of course, a team's size doesn't necessarily impact the overall quality of a game, but it's clear that the publisher is pumping a lot of resources into this one.
"Our teams have listened to the community, have learned valuable lessons, and are driving to the future," Wilson explained. "Motive, armed with cutting-edge Frostbite technology and compelling storytelling, is joining DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect to build a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer and single-player experiences." We're expecting a rather robust instalment, then.
Wilson also attempted to stir up some hype by revealing that he's been able to sit down play some of the current build: "A few weeks ago, I was visiting with the teams and I couldn't be more excited about what they showed and what we were able to play."

I have very low expectations for this, especially given the launch if 2042. I mean, I love Battlefield (Battlefield 4 is underrated IMO), but EA really dropped the ball with 2042. Not to mention they cut support for Star Wars Battlefront 2 to make 2042, when that game had SO MUCH potential. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this though.
Marketing blah blah
Didn't they also claim that BF2042 was "way ahead of schedule" back then?
"Our teams have listened to the community, have learned valuable lessons, and are driving to the future"
If it were that simple, BF2042 would have retained the many lessons learnt from prior Battlefield (and Battlefront) games and not been a worthless, trend-chasing flop.
Suffice to say, I won't be holding my breath.
And it will be just as boring as the previous ones.
Maybe it will be 3rd times a charm since Battlefield 1. But I'm not holding my breath...
wish Killzone 2 was being remastered with larger maps
Yes, bigger always means better, no exceptions.
Brilliant, really enjoyed the last couple of Battlefields they both came good in the end.
Biggest dev team yet, eh? And yet, where Battlefield is concerned, given its track record, it could end up being the series biggest failure yet, which is saying something considering BF V and especially BF 2042. I remain exceptionally skeptical …….
I have never played a Battlefield game but this Andrew Wilson guy sounds like the Hype Man for an ass-wiping contest.
So they are going to milk the hell out of this instead of give us more Dead Space or something new.
Colour me not interested.
Probably shut them down if it flops too
Wow how amazing … largest ever teams … listened to the community … it’ll really be something special I’m sure …
For some reason I can see Sony having some sort of marketing deal with this new Battlefield since their contract with Call of Duty is almost up. If so then it might be an incentive for EA to make sure it's the best it can be and has no performance issues at launch, and makes them take the IP more seriously.
Do a battlefield 3 remake or Bad Company 2 and I’ll buy it
@IlIlIo-oIlIlI now that’s a proper idea. Buy it in a heartbeat
I will for sure give it a look. When BF is right it’s super fun. Good to see them have a large workforce on it. Hope they can create something really good again. COD could use some competition.
Let's see if they remember the scoreboard this time around
I actually enjoyed bf2042 despite its flaws. I would just love a new bad company game as bad company 2 was the best in the series by a country mile and has never been bettered. I'm sure this next installment will be good but if it ain't bc2 I'll have to think hard about it.
could never get into BF , even though bf4 was solid . hope the series bounces back and gives COD competition.
There's going to be a lot of people to lay off
Yep take all the EA owned devs who made great games alone in the past and force to them to work on garbage. Reason why lots of people left EA owned devs, cant make anything worth making. Just chasing a genre that has no individual longevity.
The only way I can be positive here is to say that at least that’s plenty devs keeping their jobs. Even if good studios have been turned into support staff for this crap.
Battlefield 1943.. ah, there was a great game.
Almost seemed like half a game at the time, limited maps etc, but the gameplay was fantastic.
Bad Company 2 if I remember right, had a decent single player with about 4 characters in it.. maybe.
BF 3 and 4 I played a ton of, well over 150 hours each. Lots of maps, AND good fun.
Then 1 and 5 came along, and 5 just seemed, I don't know, boring, lifeless and 2042 seemed worse still.
I always bought them about 2 months after release second hand.
But I STILL hope that the next one goes back to it's former greatness. 🤞🏻
With so many people working on it, focus is lost. There is no team vision and synergy. It'll be a patchwork of good, mediocre and bad forced together, from teams all over the world. It'll be a broken, inefficiently optimised mess . . . Like the last one.
He only ever pops his head up before a Battlefield game comes out spinning the usual PR ***** but when the game does come out he goes missing when customers are demanding answers. A wretched man!
Enough Battlefield. Bring Burnout back already.
It's the last shot they have before it's game over for good..better make it count, but I have a super low expectations knowing how ogaming industry shifted towards cringe skins and cross content collabs
@Northern_munkey I played Bad Company 2 multiplayer to death!!! Haha loved it fantastic game.
I'd be interested in a well done Bad Company 3.
Okay....that won't translate to a better game.
@Mikey856 Kinda tired of this type of comment. Great games back in the day but we played them to death and know the maps as your own jeans' pockets. Rather give me a new take on the proven formula with excessive destruction and new, fresh maps
Doesn't matter, if the same people are in charge they will make the same mistakes again.
Battlefield 2042 launched without even having scoreboards… last one I enjoyed was battlefield 1 but that may have just been because I loved the setting.
Sounds like planning on going broke quicker
If I'm a game dev that statement equates to a bunch of us being let go once the game ships and doesn't meet expectations (that's the IP has been able to hit for years) we are all toast.
Yeah but 2042 had the second-largest* workforce and stunk out loud.
*no clue if true
@Trousersnake nothing wrong with remaking an old game as long as it’s decent. The code is in place, all they do is turn up the graphics right? In the meantime that can bring coin in for the next big project. Will you not be partaking in the Black flag remake then?
@Mikey856 I hardly play anything flat these days, wasn't aware they are doing a remake of Black Flag but it is my fave AC game so that's cool. Not going to buy it though, it's mainly VR gaming for me these days so i'll get Assassins Creed Nexus instead
@Trousersnake see there’s always a remake for everyone. Personally I want a bluepoint remake of Bloodborne. After what they did with Demons Souls I’m pawing the ground for a follow up 👌🏻. Cool that you’re a VR gamer ! I was day one with both vr1&2
