PlayStation has published the PS Store sales charts for April, and the rankings make for an interesting read. High-profile PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade did pretty well, rocking up to second in North America and fourth in Europe. That's not quite on par with what we'd expect from, say, a AAA PlayStation Studios title, but it's still a very solid return for a single-player action game in the current climate.
In North America, Stellar Blade was topped only by the frankly unstoppable Helldivers 2, which is now three months old. Arrowhead's shooter is bona fide blockbuster at this point, also settling for third place in Europe.
Which brings us to Europe's current king: Sea of Thieves. Previously an Xbox console exclusive, the co-op-focused pirate adventure has performed brilliantly, finding a whole new audience on Sony's system. It placed third in North America, which is still an achievement.
Elsewhere, Fallout 4 got a boost off the back of the recent Amazon show and the launch of its PS5 port. The rest of the charts are packed with the usual suspects, with March's heavy hitters — Dragon's Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin — sticking around a bit further down.

Jeez, Europe, GTA5 in second? Really?
Every time I see the sales charts, I wonder who is still buying GTA5. I don’t know anyone that’s bought GTA5 this generation. Hasn’t everyone owned this game for over a decade by now? Never even heard of Sker Ritual either…
Also, really surprised Sea of Thieves sold as well as it did. Its a shame Hi-Fi Rush didn’t get that kind of support from the community.
Helldivers 2 has to be well pass 10 million copies sold.
Not bad to say it launched at the end of the month, also great to see HellDivers 2 still doing great after 3 months, I'm surprised they haven't announced any sales millstones yet.
There wasn’t much competition at all…MW3 is what, like 8 months old? Decade plus old GTA5 sold for dirt cheap. Pretty much any new release will get on the charts by default.
It looks to me like a lot of these newer games had weak legs, like where is Tekken or FF? These games disappeared quickly.
Europe making sure Xbox ports all their games lol.
Damn, my 3 copies of Stellar Blade weren't enough to push it higher then lol
Thanks Europe! this all but guarantees that the flood gates for Xbox games to PS5 is wide open. I mean is not like Xbox has anything else to lose by porting their whole catalog 😅
@Juanalf bring on the gears and halo collections lol.
@Shad361
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth missing from both charts as well. Surprising and disappointing. All 3 are great games.
The g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.grand theft auto 5 still doing its thing.x box bringing its games to PlayStation is the right move.word up son
@somnambulance Why is it so hard to imagine that every year someone is born... and eventually they'll be old enough to own GTA. I was in best buy today and someone was buying a PS5 for their son. Guess what they also bought with the consoles... GTA
You know MS will be like "EU is Xbox' strongest sales region!"
@AverageGamer You hope that each generation develops higher intelligence and taste than the one before it. But, alas....
Being only behind Helldivers is nothing to be ashamed of for Stellar Blade. Helldivers really is kind of an anomaly after all. I am really shocked Sea of Thieves is doing as well as it is. It never looked very appealing to me but hey glad people are enjoying it.
@Juanalf Seriously, grow up.
Stellar Blade is not a AAA game so why even make the comparison?
I hope the discourse around Stellar Blade doesnt mess up sales because the game is truly brilliant. Tonns of fun!
Stellar Blade is a really good game and once you get to a certain point its actually pretty great but its still a fairly niche game and the T&A can only get you so far with people who might not be into action "soulslite" games. It will do well but it was never changing anything and i expect the crowd that bought it purely for Eve were shocked to find its more Dark Souls/Sekiro and less Bayonetta and actually requires both hands to play.
Is that surprising? Stellar Blade is a niche game for a specific audience, it's already good that it is so high in the charts.
Where is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ? What is wrong with gamers, man ? This is just sad. Can't believe I live in a world where such an amazing game is outsold by Fallout 4. I honestly hate gamers right now. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. You are a disappointment.
A great result, i thins SB may have sold 3 million copies
@AverageGamer I get that every year new people are born, but also every year new games are made too. Super Mario Bros wasn’t charting in the top 10 during the N64/PS1 era, you know? It’s just strange how the games of 10-ish years ago are just as pervasive in gaming culture as current games. There’s never been another era in gaming like that.
I guess Rare will get closed next.
I'd say that Stellar Blade being in the top 5 in the US and Europe(On the PS Store) is actually awesome for the game. Given the type of game it is(action/soulslike) and the audience that it's for/geared towards is pretty good. I'm finally going to start playing it this week which I'm excited about.
Shift Up did a great job with their first console game and I can't wait to see what they do next, and hopefully Playstation partners with them again because it just makes too much sense given how much they promoted Stellar Blade. Almost like it was a first party game.
I'm curious to see how many copies it sold once the Circana report comes out.
@__jamiie did someone hit a nerve 🤣
The golden ages for SoT
@__jamiie who is liking it to a AAA game?
@somnambulance IIRC buying copies of GTA5 gets you the ingame currency sometimes at cheaper rates than if you bought it on the shop (depending on sales of the game).
@bizzysgs I agree. Rebirth deserves so much better sales. Is superb.
At least stellar blade is doing well. Having more fun with that than I thought I would.
@Dodoo The other poster is being dramatic. Expecting a 2.5 month old $70 single player game to place high on charts is just ridiculous. Everyone who wanted it, bought it. Most of the sales of FF7Re, DD2, and assumedly Stellar Blade happen the first week or two. Its not a service game like HD2 where stuff is always happening and people are joining in with their buddies.
Comparing to FO4 is equally ridiculous. The game is on the coattails of a popular TV show and was being sold for a couple bucks. One of the old Need For Speeds placed the other month because it was on sale for 90% off. It doesn’t mean NFS’s 2018 game is the pinnacle of 2024 gaming content…
@somnambulance But back when we had the OG Super Mario Bros... We didn't have to wait 15+ years for the sequel. We got Super Mario Bros 2 3 years later. I'm also sure games back then had limited production runs. It also doesn't help that Rockstar keeps porting it to new consoles and updating it with meaningful content.
@somnambulance Edit: I see someone else already made this point so feel free to disregard the following...GTA V is like a Disney film. There are always more young people and when 'coming of age', allowed by their parents to buy it. There ain't no GTA 6 yet and 5 is always on sale. That's my two pence anyway!
@Konks
Look at the competition though, it’s painfully non existent. Rebirth not even making top 20 isn’t good. And 2.5 months isn’t even THAT old honestly.
People just aren’t buying games outside the hardcore right now honestly.
@Korgon People love pirates in the west and the only competition is the dead Skull and Bones. In HK and Japan it is at 40-50 on the best selling chart.
@BIG3 discourse? The censorship stuff or did I miss out on anything?
@AverageGamer @TJ81 Whoa, I had no idea about what @Konks said. I’ll bet that factors more into its evergreen status than I ever would have realized. I can see that being a factor just as much as the whole “coming of age” theory on it. I mean, I’ve seen people buy “Fortnite in a case,” as silly as that is
@somnambulance - It's evergreen status is absolutely due to heavily discounted physical shark card bundles. I have 2 people on my friends list who play GTAO religiously and they both buy dozens of cheap bundle copies per year. Their GTAO playing friends all do the same.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Yeah. Pretty much the Censorship and character design. Such a shame that became the main talking points because as an arpg the game is superb. Should be praised like dmc and/or nier for its combat.
@somnambulance May not be popular but I agree with what @AverageGamer & @TJ81 said that everyday more gamers, both kids and adults, are introduced to gaming or buy a new console. There are certain evergreen titles that are seemingly a 'must buy' for a very large section of that new audience. GTAV is one of them, Minecraft, Mario Kart etc. all fit into this category too and you often see those in the charts most months, especially top 20. Slightly different as they are annual releases but the new COD, not-Fifa, Madden, and other sports games fit into this category too. It is a shame but as much as we may not like it people buy what they know en masse over something new.
It is also true that in the past GTAV was sometimes sold with Shard Card credit and this was occasionally cheaper than buying shark cards outright as @Konks said, but to my knowledge that isn't the case right now, though I don't follow GTA Online closely.
@bizzysgs Agreed. The majority of gamers are just stupid. That's the world we live in.
@Sincleaver the $70 price tag doesn’t help. People will only buy big ip and cheap discounted games now.
@BIG3 yh that's certainly a shame then, was actually just looking at its storepage and some of these screenshots are super nice damn
But the half naked characters kinda take away from it for me as well 🥲
@Cherip-the-Ripper luckily there are several fully dressed outfits that you can find rather early, just so you know.
@Artois2 The article says 'That's not quite on par with what we'd expect from, say, a AAA PlayStation Studios title, but it's still a very solid return for a single-player action game in the current climate.'
I think it's a bit unfair to compare a first full console game from a small studio that way.
@Artois2 Yeah sometimes I get grumpy.
@__jamiie don’t we all
@Artois2 and sometime I miss read things 🤣
Boo to them both, Eiyuden Chronicle should been on top those list.
