Likely side-eying how Helldivers 2's mandatory PSN account linking has gone down over the weekend, developer Sucker Punch Productions is making plain precisely what will be required to enjoy the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut PC port, out on 16th May.
If such things matter to you, the good news is that Ghost of Tsushima's single-player component will not require Steam users to link to a PSN account to play. However, the game's standalone multiplayer component, Legends, will require those linked accounts to play, a hill Sony appears ready to die on. So, if that's something you find beyond the pale, at least you have an excellent base game to become immersed in, including the incredible Iki Island expansion.
Spotted by Wccftech, responding to a fan enquiry, the official Sucker Punch Twitter account stated that a PSN account would be required to use the Legends multiplayer mode. However, experiencing Jin's epic, solo adventure will not demand the same from players.
Following the intense review bombing that Sony's decision to mandate PSN accounts for PC Helldivers 2 players kicked off, do you think we will see more PlayStation-affiliated studios try to get ahead of this prickly problem? Let us know in the comments section below.

I really hope this doesn't lead to Ghost of Tsushima being review bombed on Steam. I can't comment on Legends since I never played it on console, but the single-player is still top-notch.
Another manufacturered outrage over a nothing-burger. And this comes from a person who has made 2 US based accounts and a Japan PSN account while not living in either country.
I hope people just play and enjoy GoT cause it was my personal GOTY in 2020.
@Deadlyblack the pc community really is acting childish. Negative reviewing a game they've been loving just because of a policy that was stated from the beginning that required a Psn account I don't buy for a second that it's because not every country has access to PSN , that makes up a minority of total players.
@3Above it was my goty too, really beautiful art direction, great gameplay, and great story
@Americansamurai1 @Deadlyblack I dont buy that either. They were so happy when trophies were coming to GoT and having to signing to PSN wasnt a problem then. Funny how the platform with the most piracy is upset about an extra step of authentication 🤔
@Deadlyblack I mean, if they complain, then they didn't look at the right side of the Steam page, where it says you need a PSN account for multiplayer and/or the PSN overlay. That message has been there since the game went up for preorder.
@3Above I think the outrage will be over in a week at most.
@Americansamurai1 It's gotten really dumb now they are review bombing games that have nothing to do with helldivers 2 like magicka.
@MasterVGuides i saw someone on reddit trying to get people to report Sony to their local government for fraud, never seen grown people cry so much.
@Areus yeah talk about a toxic community. They have no problem signing up for any of these other accounts that are required to play like Microsoft.
For now, but 6 month later? Just hope sony doesn't altering the deal any further 👻
@Deadlyblack Disagree about the term "review bomb", if customer bought the game with their hard earned $60, they're entitled to review the game according to their standard. It's not "review bomb", it's just a review.
@Americansamurai1 How much you want to bet that they are going to have no problem signing up for a rockstar account for gta6.
@Areus yeah without a doubt
Sony need to end pc support at this point it’s starting to become more of a hassle than a benefit.
I love how the article throws shade at Sony with that “dying on that hill” comment for doing something every other publisher does for their MP games smh. So author do you find it unreasonable Sony wants players to make a FREE account and link it for a game they own, spent seven years funding and throwing manpower at?
Pc players getting a reality check lol.
I expected all Sony online games to require a PSN account. Obviously not the single player games.
Just to add some extra clarity for folks wondering why there’s so much outrage. It’s not that a psn account is required (if that’s the issue someone has they’re the problem, and I could care less), it’s that in the case of Helldivers 2 the game was sold on steam in countries where a PSN account is not even a possibility. Sony then delisted the game in those countries, so even people who bought it cannot play it which left valve to clean up the mess. A minority? Perhaps, but it’s a very bad move.
Adding fuel to the fire is that Sony did it on a Friday which means a bunch of their employees come back in on Monday to a flaming inbox and damage control. Ghost of Tsushima will share the same fate if Sony makes the same mistake. Don’t sell the game in countries you can’t have a PSN account in. Period. Dumpster fire averted.
As a good analogy for the issue of due diligence, who remembers Rogers Communications and Shomi? In Canada Shomi was a fledgling streaming service Rogers telecommunications created as an exclusive to their customers. Only they took shortcuts and none of the paperwork to make it legally exclusive to their customers was filled out and they didn’t do anything to remedy that. They were forced to provide the service to their competitors too, which led them to just shut it down. Sony is doing the same thing with the countries that HD2 was delisted from, just shoving the same exact thing on every single storefront and not bothering to follow any kind of protocol or process to ensure it isn’t put where it’s not meant to be.
Legends could have the opportunity to grow on PC, since it was a pretty badass free dlc that never got its due on console, but yh, with this requierment it won't. Hopefully PC users don't punish the excellent main game as well...they probably will though.
I'm more annoyed about Sony not offering the possibility to change PSN account country within Europe like Nintendo.
Also I'd imagine Sony will eventually make their own launcher if they keep porting games to pc. That'll require a PSN account.
@Jay767 yeah, they need to leave the pc space immediately. They also need to stop making exclusives as the current model isn’t sustainable long term and attempting to recoup some of the development costs by launching on pc is a terrible strategy.
@Americansamurai1 "You were right about one thing master, The Negotiations were short"
@3Above yeah, but there was a lot of whining, so I think they just got tired do hearing it. Curious to see if their other liver service titles will or won't require a PSN
I hope Sony stops doing this.
