You already know the situation: everyone is expecting Sony to wheel out a big PlayStation Showcase announcement ahead of Summer Game Fest and all the other gaming events in the summer. Why? Well, because it happened last year, and because it's been heavily rumoured for at least a couple of months. But right now, the speculation seems to be slipping out of control, because some PlayStation fans are convinced that the announcement's happening today.
The thinking behind this theory largely stems from timing. We're obviously fast approaching the last week of May 2024, and going by what happened roughly 12 months ago, Sony will want to host its presentation before the month is out. Again, Summer Game Fest is set for the 7th June, so if the Japanese giant's goal is to be ahead of the competition — just like in 2023 — then it'll have to announce something now.
2023's PlayStation Showcase was confirmed a week in advance, on the 17th May — a Wednesday, it should be stressed — before taking place on the 24th May.
Adding fuel to the fire, you've got the likes of Shpeshal Nick saying the event is probably happening next week — although let's face it, pretty much anyone could make that claim given the above speculation. Still, a lot of people take notice of this stuff, and, yet again, the timing lines up.
The recent LEGO Horizon leak could also point towards some kind of showcase, and we are, of course, still waiting on Sony to provide a roadmap for the PS5's future. The PS5 Pro is all-but-official — and supposedly launching later this year — while the first-party PlayStation Studios remain silent. Stellar Blade just released last month, and the current-gen console's release schedule is now wide open. Taking all of this into account, we'd be surprised if there isn't an imminent showcase.
Will it be announced today, though? We'll soon find out.

Would be nice to know if they was going to have one or not, don't know why their communication is so poor. One thing good I can say about Microsoft is that they let people know if they're having an event or not.

That's what my wife said to me after I yelled out of joy thinking the showcase gets announced today.
Their corporate strategy meeting is in 12 hours so I'd be surprised if showcase isn't announced by the end of that.

Last week, when googling Summer Games Fest, I saw an inaccessible part of the SGF website labeled PlayStation Showcase. A few hours later, it was gone.

@NEStalgia Yeah, at first it seemed like showcase would've been in some way connected to the financial results but then the results came in and they announced the corporate strategy meeting. If they don't announce by the end of the meeting, I get the impression there isn't a showcase and instead Sony pulls a 2022.
I expect nothing less but bangers this rumoured showcase, as anything less than a banger would make it another abysmal year from first party.
We need new games announced and maybe some old franchises reimagined, remade.

IDK, I kind of wonder what the corporate strategy meeting is about. It seems kind of "big" in a sense that they're massively changing their business far beyond PS. Or it's just that without anything big this year there's no need for a showcase, but then it makes me wonder if the Pro was much ado about nothing (like the 5 years of Switch Pro rumors), leaks of prototypes never put into production.
Though with the new CEO just appointed, they might not be in anyway organized to present anything yet.
I don't think it will be announced today if the past couple state of play are taken into account. They announced them around 2 or 3 days before they aired.

Pretty much just enough details such that a Playstation Showcase can be focused all in on the games rather than having to delve into ecosystem stuff. Do note the meeting is a general Sony meeting so there's going to be a load of stuff unrelated to Playstation.
I’m starting to think there might not be a showcase until late September (as in 2020 and 2021), usually when we’re close to any event there’s plenty of rumblings about it but I’ve seen nothing so far, only the usual clickbait “journalists” like Grubb that every week claims that something is gonna happen only to be wrong and say he wasn’t.

PlayStation does have a lack of communication, but some, including myself, argue that is a good thing because they are doing so well without saying anything. In fact, they don't say much, so they don't get all the negative press around things they say or don't say. Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty over on Xbox get caught in lies constantly and are always out there talking out both sides of their mouths, so you see so much content out there just trying to interpret what they are saying or calling them out.
Today or not, I would like to watch it. I hope for FFIX Remake thats all I want.

@Grumblevolcano I can almost agree with all that except, I think if PS5 Pro was real and announced it would not be at the corporate meeting. It's a product announcement more than a corporate strategy announcement, so I think they'd hold that.
And Aloy as the face of PS? OMG I could see Hulst doing that, along with erecting a statue of himself in the place of the one of Jim they probably had and tore down lol. I mean I love Horizon, I like it more than GoW, and certainly more than anything ND puts out, but Aloy as the face of PS is just so out of touch. Despite them cranking them out it's never seemed close to being their top IPs.

@NEStalgia Horizon is actually #6 on the list of their top selling IPs. #1 is Gran Turismo so their mascot should really just be Kazunori Yamauchi.
EDIT: Also interesting to note #'s 8 and 9 of the top selling franchises on PS (Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, respectively) are owned by Activision/Blizzard which is owned by Microsoft now. I would consider this a good point to argue against consolidation in the form of buying giant publishers.

@IamJT #6 feels about right. I kind of feel any of the "realistic" characters make a terrible mascot. Kratos, Aloy, Drake, etc just don't really feel "mascot" worthy. Sackboy was a great mascot but has no recent games, and sold poorly. Astrobot is perfect but MIA. You wouldn't think it's so hard to come up with a good marketing mascot even if they just made up a character to be nothing but a marketing mascot. "Realistic humans" that kill a lot of people (ok or monsters in Kratos case) just seem like an awful mascot.
@NEStalgia Crash was perfect. Ratchet maybe? I agree astrobot is the best choice but he hasnt been around long enough to really be a mascot.
@IamJT Crash is "edgy" and a little too 90's today. Though Sonic still works. Ratchet would really do it. If not Astrobot IDK why they don't use ratchet. Heck, even Cole McGrath would have been a more workable mascot being a superhero kind of character than super-realistic Aloy and Kratos. I'd say Delsin, but he has all the personality of an empty Amazon box.
They've struggled with mascots for a while. Remember launch PS4's back of box mascot art was Aiden Pierce? That was even good-era Sony and that was just awkward

Sony needs it in terms of keeping it's players happy. They have relied heavily on third party deals with Square (which won't happen anymore)?.
Naughty Dog is a premier studio and I would love to see both a new PS5 only Uncharted and also a new IP from them.
Santa Monica Studio...Blue Point, Housemarque ?... plus many others. Insomniac has been carrying the can for Sony for a while...although Stellar Blade is a great game and I hope that game sold well?
Sony has a rich history of games. Maybe get away from open world bs as it's burnt out a long time ago...these new consoles still have shown no further advanced in gameplay...it's all a biy stale for older gamers who have been there and done it. Freshen it up a bit with AAA titles. Indies try to, AA games try to...but big budget AAA games are mostly sequels and play it safe as money and sales becomes more important due to the huge investment to make these showpiece games.
