It's been said for a while now that Assassin's Creed Shadows will have a smaller open world map than its immediate 'RPG' predecessors, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Word on the street is that it'll be more comparable to the map from Assassin's Creed Origins, which was still big, but perhaps wasn't quite as overwhelming as the worlds that would follow.
What's more, Ubisoft has confirmed that Shadows will boast a seasonal system, in which locations can change based on the time of year. And with that in mind, a smaller map starts to make a lot of sense.
Anyway, we've now got our first look at what seems to be the full map of Shadows, as posted on Reddit. The game's made up of nine regions — Tamba, Harima, Wakasa, Settsu, Yamashiro, Omi, Iga, Yamato, and Kii — and covers a fairly large chunk of mainland Japan, towards the south.
In the time period of Shadows, these regions were key to many a warlord, with Kyoto — then the country's capital city — situated right towards the centre. The map also covers the massive Lake Biwa, which is counted amongst Japan's most famous destinations. Awaji Island is present on the game's map as well, situated off the south-west coast, but it's unclear whether you'll actually be able to go there.
What are your thoughts on the Assassin's Creed Shadows map? Are you looking forward to exploring a chunk of Japan later this year? Saddle up in the comments section below.

Thing is Origins world map was mostly empty desert, if they cover the same square mileage with the density seen in the trailers and gameplay it's going to be fairly similar in size and content to the other Big RPG entries with the exception of Valhalla which was sickeningly huge in hindsight (I still don't know how I 100% everything in that game)
VERY YES. Very close to finish my Valhalla playthrough now. Then Mirage, and I think it will be in time for november. This game will be awesome.
So long as the story, mechanics, gameplay elements and pretty much everything else is better than Valhalla, consider me a happy bunny 🙂
Origins was more than large enough, so this is completely fine. I'm glad they didn't go even larger after Valhalla, that would've been absurd.
I can't say I recall the actual story from any assassin's creed game despite completing numerous of them..... I will rent this and probably complete it....but it won't hold a candle to ghost of Tsushima
Why should this be exciting?
Better news would be:
Ubisoft has finally made immersion improvements.
NPC's have more than 1 dumb line they repeat every 5 seconds.
NPC's interact with the player.
The player can interact with the world dynamically.
Random events play out by being in its neighbourhood.
These were all in there in the first AC. The past decade? Not so much. Just saying
I really can't wait for this game. Ubisoft is so good at making a map that is just fun to look at and I assume that will be here in spades thanks to the setting. Probably going to be the last game I buy this year that I can think of.
With this and Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft really has a great year ahead of them!
@Specky from the trailer yesterday there does seem to be some improvements but yes npc interactions like RDR2 would be amazing
As long as the cities are worth it though, Valhalla had several cities but none of them had the slightest parkour, which is a shame.
I gotta be honest. I’m looking forward to this one. Call me crazy, but I preordered it. This is the AC game we’ve been asking for for years.
Seasons? Oh this is gonna be so pretty. I wonder how that impacts gameplay.
We don't need huge maps anyway
If the map is smaller, that's fine.
I felt like Origins had a really good map size that should work really well with Shadows. Really excited!
The showcase yesterday sold me on the game.
Ha, Origins had a flipping massive map anyway. Odyssey and Valhalla were just too big by a good chunk.
Very excited. Video games set in Japan interest me most of all.
