It feels like we've been writing about The First Descendant for an eternity, but thankfully, its launch date has finally been locked in. The free-to-play looter shooter drops on the 2nd July for PS5, following many alpha and beta tests over the last couple of years. Let's hope it's ready to go!
We went hands-on with The First Descendant in September of last year, and came away fairly positive. The third-person gameplay is nicely crafted, and we enjoyed character-based action. That said, it's hard to shake the feeling that the game may struggle to stand out in today's crowded live service space.
In any case, we'll get to see how things pan out in just under a month from now. Is The First Descendant on your radar? Sort out your inventory in the comments section below.

Didn't realise this is free to play. That puts worry in mind
Cool trailer. Looked up some gameplay.
Sadly looks very generic. The usual looter shooter with a grappling hook, endless weird dungeons and gazillion HUD elements.
I'll just keep playing Factions for the third generation in a row. Yay
Nexon has always made flashy visual games that are ultimately just predatory grind games Designed to get you to pay for Mtx. In fact they were around during the very early years of these extraction design models before they became so prevalent in the larger gaming market. Back when they were just corny free to play pc game ads on websites and social media.
This will be no different and is really only on mainstream radars because of its higher budget/production values.
@TheFakulty The model is free-to-play with unlockable characters and cosmetics, not unlike a gacha game. We won't know how bad the monetisation is until the game launches, though.
Free-to-play games instantly repel me.
@ShogunRok it's more the bloated grind and chore that normally goes with this. Dont get me wrong I like do tasks but I dont like having to repeat something just to progress
@TheFakulty I agree. If my options are either to grind the same missions / daily quests / timed events over and over again or spend real money to get the thing I want, I'd rather just play a different game!
Oh nooooo, I thought this looked more like Gears of War or something. This won’t end well.
Looter shooter might be the funniest new word I learned.
Also, that looks like female akechi goro.
@Yousef- Shlooter.
@Specky yea factions was some of the best multiplayer I ever played. Really sad it’s never been updated. Here is hoping it ships with TLOU3. I think there is a space for the tacked on multiplayer for single player games. Designed to be supported for a few years instead of just continuing forever. It’s my preferred multiplayer. I don’t want to play the same game for seven years, I want a fun, additional mode, for a game I love and then move on.
@IamJT yeah i remember the days of resistance 2 games like that really appealed to me single player when your done with that various multiplayer modes
Boomer shooter > looter shooter
Big budget but it’s free to play? might as well be low budget
Everybody here being negative about this. Did any of you actually play the beta because if you did you would realise you are way off target because its actually very good. Its very polished and yes it has micro transactions etc but you don't have to purchase them. I've been waiting a long time for this and I'll be playing it for sure. Bring on July.
Another LIVE-SERVICE game?
No thank you.
@Northern_munkey : Right... you don't have to purchase the microtransanctions but that means you will be playing with an interior version...do you like playing with inferior versions of the games?.....would you like other people to see you playing with an inferior version of the game?...I'm sure you don't.
That's exactly the reason these Free-to-Play games exist, to make sure you later on pay for what it should have been in the game from the beginning.
@Gamer_X did you play the beta? You are aware its a co-op and not a pvp game? Personally I like to grind out my gear and I know that sounds a bit odd that somebody actually enjoys the grind but it really dosnt affect me if somebody decides to pay for their gear. I don't have to play with them.
@Northern_munkey: Grinding or not when you are not paying for the microtransanctions sooner or later the base game is going to make you feel cheap and outdated.....you can only grind so much until you realize my words.
@Gamer_X your words won't stop me from enjoying playing the game the way I want to play it. How others choose to play the game is up to them and if they want to basically just take a short cut to the higher tier then power to them. I'll be happy grinding away looking inferior while you'll still be here moaning about it.
This trailer is class. Amazing production.
@Northern_munkey I played the beta! I've been waiting for a release date for this for quite some time. I don't quite get the people that are being negative when the game is F2P and microtransactions aren't forced, in fact during the beta the developers stated that they're not going to push the microtransactions and instead work towards a balanced progression/unlock system that is rewarding without the need for microtransactions, but leave them there for the people who don't have patience/want to unlock characters without effort.
Most people that throw negative comments around about an unreleased F2P game are normally just bandwagoning - the game isn't out, we don't (fully) know what the microtransactions will be. It's F2P. Actually giving the game an honest go will cost you exactly $0.00.
I enjoy that each of the characters has their own abilities that make them unique, with different playstyles and progressions.
@Mortal I haven’t been following the game much, is it closer to Destiny or Warframe in terms of gameplay and progression?
@Wilforce it's kind of a blend of both. It has the abilities/powers of Destiny with the frenetic combat of Warframe. I'd say the gear system, at least in the beta, was like Outriders, giving you the ability to get quite granular on your builds.
@IamJT that's actually not a bad idea. Factions: The Game was cancelled, but there's still hope it could be a multiplayer aspect of the next Last of Us game
@Wilforce Gameplay-wise it felt like Anthem/Marvel's Avengers/Warframe-y. Abilities and builds were fun, but the enemy diversity felt lacking. But gunplay was very clean and addictive
@Mortal they probably didn't even try the beta but think they know exactly how it plays. Their loss as its a really solid looter shooter.
@Northern_munkey aye. They're stuck on the idea that F2P live service will have aggressive microtransactions and will be lacking any actual content unless you pay for it. No interest in actually checking the game out to form their own educated opinion because that is what all F2P are in their world.
In other news; in the last 24 hours, Fortnite, a popular F2P shooter with microtransactions was played by around 1.7million players. That's 1.7million players that must be very upset right now after playing a game that is obviously a terrible game with horrendous, predatory microtransactions because it's F2P.
Oh wait... No... Turns out F2P games with (or without) microtransactions can actually be enjoyable! What a world we live in!
