Mark Darrah, former BioWare executive producer and director for much of the Dragon Age series, says the studio's upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the best of the bunch. Darrah, who departed the studio in 2020, returned as a consultant on this new entry late last year and was impressed by the experience.
Speaking to Game Informer, Darrah admitted to the shortcomings of the games he was most involved in (Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II), singing the sort of praises fans have been hoping to hear: "Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad'. In this game, the combat's actually fun, but it does keep that thread that's always been there. You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but you still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from other people in the party."
Dragon Age has changed core mechanics with each entry, sometimes into entirely other sub-genres (CRPG-light to Action RPG). Still, it sounds like The Veilguard is aiming to return to a pre-Inquisition mindset, and Darrah seems pretty psyched about it: "This is really the best Dragon Age game that I've ever played. This is the one where we get back to our roots of character-driven storytelling, have really fun combat, and aren't making compromises."
Of course, the proof will be in the pudding. The Veilguard is slated for a Fall 2024 release window. Are you looking forward to returning to the world of Thedas, an abbreviation that stands for The Dragon Age setting? Let us know in the comments section below.

So someone paid to say the game is good says the game is good? Neat.
Vultures circling Bioware right now. I love sad attempts to get ahead of the failure. Bioware should never have been in this situation.
"Are you looking forward to returning to the world of Thedas?"
Nothing they've shown so far actually made me "look forward" to play it. Especially after Nintendo direct showcased a bunch of other RPGs and JRPGs crowding autumn/winter release that actually interest me.
They really need to stop telling about the game and start showing more. After CDPR and Cyberpunk, they can tell whatever they want but till I see it in action before launch, I won't believe them.
Can we please stop celebrating every single RPG from every genre just becoming generic action RPG? Homogenization of games isn't a good thing unless you're a sales manager at a publisher.
Plot twist: he never played any other Dragon age game.
"It's the best Dragon Age game I've ever played"
(slips pile of money into pocket)
Would he say any different? Would be funny if he said something like “Its still not as good as Origins but the combat is definitely more fun and engaging.”
I must say that the last details given on twitter/gaminformer are far more interesting than the 20 minutes of gameplay showed.
I fear that even if it's gonna be a good game, this could really be the last game of Bioware.
@Lavishturtle Gotta say i'm a little frustrated by the number of people seemingly WANTING this game to fail. Vultures is right. Sad times.
Paid actor right there
Music to my ears. Bring it BioWare 🔥
@themightyant Seems to be a running theme with almost anything to do with gaming these days the constant negativity is draining.
Inquisition is one of my favourite games of all time.
Especially given the number of times that I have replayed it.
I am looking forward to Veilguard, because I want to see the continuation of this story.
As a Day One Dragon Age Enjoyer I am really looking forward to Veilguard, I need to scramble that Egg!
I'm gonna Spam A so hard for this. It's a return to Dragon Age 2 glory! Very exciting.
You've blown my mind with that Thedas lore, Khayl.
I believe him.dragon age the veilguard looks amazing.and i enjoy dragon age inquisition.such a incredible game.word up son
When was the last time Bioware made a good game?
What else was he going to say? These are meaningless quotes.
It looks and smells like dogshit, typical PR when PRODUCT IS NOT GOOD
I wish I didn't bounce off high/dark fantasy so often. I'd really like to enjoy more of this stuff. That said, Origins is a classic. Great game. The others were not for me. I hope Bioware can come back in some fashion. They're a different studio now, I just hope they can be a good one.
