The highly regarded mystery game The Case of the Golden Idol will make its way to PlayStation next week as PS5 and PS4 ports have been confirmed to be releasing on 23rd July 2024. Using point-and-click gameplay, you'll solve a series of murders across 50 years of history using your deductive skills to fill in the blanks. Check out the trailer above for more context.
The game has already been available on PC for almost two years, where it garnered critical acclaim with a Metacritic rating of 84 — the Nintendo Switch port received a 93. Eurogamer concluded: "Witty, observational writing and a hands-off approach to deduction elevate this excellent period murder-mystery to a singular work." The Guardian said: "Genuinely new and inventive forms of play are relatively rare in video games, a medium that more often trades in refinement than revolution. Which makes this even more thrilling. Its puzzles are inventive, but so too is the way they must be solved, allowing both a trial-and-error approach and pure deductive reasoning."
It costs £16.99 / $17.99 on other platforms, so expect a similar pricepoint on PS5, PS4. There are also two DLC packs alongside the base game, which package in more cases to solve. A sequel, titled The Rise of the Golden Idol, has already been confirmed for PS5 and PS4, so next week's ports will allow PlayStation owners to catch up in anticipation of that.
"Mayhem, magic and murder most foul! Examine clues and use your powers of deduction to solve the twisted mystery of a family's cursed inheritance and a series of grisly deaths in this point-and-click detective adventure game," the PS Store listing reveals, which currently allows you to wishlist the title. I love murder mystery stuff that spans decades (any epic or Saga or murder mysteries in general are my jam) but I just bought three games today to keep me busy with Jeanne D'arc, Robocop and The Sexy Brutale. This may have to wait a bit.
This sounds really neat. I might have to check it out. I do have a $25.00 store credit due to PlayStation Stars rewards so I might use it toward this.
Can't be that beloved if it only gets 2 comments...
Played on switch in i loved it. The only issue here are controls, it really is meant for a mouse
Really looking forward to this, love mystery games!
Played it on mobile from Netflix games. Interesting and difficult game.
@Bunchesopuppies Thanks for the heads up, didn't know it was offered for Netflix subscribers, downloaded it now and will give it a go, seems to make more sense for PC and mobile control-wise anyway.
