FromSoftware has issued a new Elden Ring patch today for PS5, PS4 systems, bringing it up to version number 1.13. It's an update affecting both the base title and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, and in an unexpected change from the norm, 95 per cent of the patch notes speak of buffs instead of nerfs. A very long list of improvements details how your equipment, Ashes of War, spells, incantations, and AI summons will all perform better after downloading update 1.13.
The Spirit Summons have received the biggest enhancement, with every one listed in the patch notes having its stagger improved. It'll now take more hits to stagger them after they've been summoned, meaning they can continue landing their own attacks for longer. In the case of others like the Warhawk, Land Squirt, and Spirit Jellyfish, they'll have more health.
Looking at the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC specifically, NPCs like Needle Knight Leda, Pureblood Knight Ansbach, and Thiollier have all had their stats increased for when they can be summoned. Then, excluding the Mimic Tear Ashes, all Spirit Summons will have better attack power and be able to sustain more damage after reaching level five of the Revered Spirit Ash blessing. The upgrade at level eight has been improved also.
In PvP situations, the poise damage of the following weapons has been improved: Light Great Swords, Backhand Blades, Hand-to-Hand Arts, and Beast Claws. Next, dual-wield attacks from the following weapon types will also deal extra poise damage: Straight Swords, Thrusting Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Spears, Whips, Fists, and Claws.

Always great to see that From continues to balance their games in order to create a more finely tuned experience.
Looking forward to more time in the Lands Between.
I had been forcing myself to play through Shadow and was really not enjoying it. Can't really figure out why, because Elden Ring is one of my favorite games ever. But Shadow of the Erdtree is just so off-putting to me that I quit before finishing Belurat Tower. Hopefully this patch improves the experience somehow.
@tangyzesty Same. Elden Ring was a blast but Erdtree has not been fun. I'm waiting for it to be thoroughly balanced before I return to it.
@tangyzesty I agree. I just don’t feel like I want to go back to Erdtree the same way I wanted to go back to Elden Ring. Maybe too much time passed or something, but I definitely feel like Erdtree has that “been there” quality to it, and it’s super tough in a sort of boring way. Unlike some, I don’t particularly want to grind to level in games anymore and that’s probably my problem since I get one-shot a lot in the DLC.
@tangyzesty I have the exact opposite experience, interestingly..
I enjoyed Elden Ring enough, the moment to moment gameplay is great and really engaging. I got the platinum trophy. But as a whole it's my least favorite of FromSoft's games like it. By far.
Not to say it's a bad game, otherwise I wouldn't have done three playthroughs 😅
SotE on the other hand is probably my favorite dlc behind Old Hunters. It just feels way more dense and "directed" to me than most of the lands between - particular the sections past Altus plateau which is when ER peaked, imho - and I enjoy the bosses WAY more than almost everything the base game offered.
The damage is brutal before skadu tree upgrades, but I'm playing the dlc a second time at lvl20 and it's near perfect to me. Elden Ring in general has HELLA overtuned damage numbers, and that still applies to the dlc, but the bosses actually feel like someone who cares designed them as opposed to the vanilla bosses that generally stack mechanics on top of another to the point where something like Malenia goes from potentially the all-time greatest to an unfun, overtuned POS due to two additions that wouldn't be as bad on their own (Waterfowl sharing the startup animation with oen or two other moves and the STUPID lifesteal even through blocks, I wouldn't mind either without the other tbh)
Meanwhile Messmer and Midra feel like they could be THE best bosses in the series - or what I've played of it which is all but Sekiro, DS2 and the back half of DS1.
@tangyzesty I've been having fun with it, but the rewards for exploring was definitely ruining my experience for me. Why am I still getting level 1 smithing stones when the DLC is near the end of the game. And as much as I like Elden Ring(I think it is amazing) it is making me miss the old games because I am so tired of getting crafting materials and cook books.
I just got to the final fog wall yesterday, but decided to tie up some loose ends first.
Guess I should have pushed ahead with that OP Thorns spell, before it got nerfed...
@Dom_31 I think you and I have differing tastes, which means by rules of the internet we must be sworn enemies now...in all seriousness I'm glad that you've had a positive experience with it. FromSoft games are not my cup of tea usually, and I used Save Wizard to neuter the hell out of Elden Ring, so there's a good chance I'm simply not the target audience for it as well.
From the patch notes:
"For the PS5 version of the game, unstable framerate may be improved by using the "Rebuild Database" option from the device’s safe mode."
I have never found this to make a difference, and from what I have read it will not fix anything unless the drive the game is installed in is >90% full, then it may make minimal difference.
This just says 'we are too LAZY / INEPT to optimise our own game'.
I think I explored too much the DLC because after Messmer, everything was more and more easy. Even the dreaded final boss just took me a couple of attempts. Clearly some problems of balance in the skills and difficulty.
