![PS5 Firmware Beta](https://images.pushsquare.com/388b71eb8efe7/ps5-firmware-beta.900x.jpg)
Sony will kick off a new firmware beta for PS5 this week, beginning on Thursday the 25th July. The beta boasts three main features: audio customisation, additional Remote Play settings, and an "adaptive" charging method for your controllers.
To start with, those who make use of the PS5's 3D audio functionality — via headphones or earbuds — will be able to personalise the tech to their tastes. Basically, you'll be able to create your own audio profiles, which means that you can adjust individual elements. All you have to do is head to your console's sound settings and tweak things to your liking via a new setup process.
Next, a pretty simple quality-of-life improvement lets you choose who can connect to your PS5 through Remote Play. Handy if you've got friends and family who take turns accessing your system.
And finally, there's the adaptive controller charging. The catch is that you need a new 'slim' PS5 model in order to try this out, but it sounds like it could be somewhat useful. When charging a controller in rest mode, you'll be able to select a new 'adaptive' option in the power saving settings, and this essentially charges your pad based on its current battery level, which can save energy.
So, it's not the most impressive firmware update we've ever seen, but these additions are still welcome. Are any of them of particular interest to you? Remember to charge your DualSense in the comments section below.

Considering how awesome the PS5 is already, any improvements are just icing.
Disappointed that there still is no Stars integration.
I am normally given a beta code due to myself doing regular beta testing since the PS4. Hopefully i'll get lucky with another code for tomorrow...
I totally forgot there was a slim model.
@AdamNovice Agreed! When are they going to integrate that!
@PocketHotDogs This is one of the only times Sony's officially addressed it (specifically as the 'slimmer' model) since it launched, too.
I wished they integrated output to 1080 when you connect via portal. It would then super sample but also reduce data being streamed making even more stable.
I miss 3D Audio for my PS Portal. For the PS5, PS Portal is just „Remote Play“.
Are there technical limitations (like audio compression) which prohibit 3D Audio for Remote Play? And if not, could Sony implement a mechanism to allow it specifically for the Portal?
@TheFakulty In my understanding there is a big misconception, PS5 already generates a native 1080p stream (and is not capable of generating something higher). This seems to be a myth made by some YouTubers with limited technical knowledge.
I hope someday sony will unlock ps5 true capability so it can display folder on the homescreen.
If memory serves rightly, the slim has both a disc and digital edition, which means there’s four ps5 models’ prices to keep track of. Yeah, that won’t be tricky at all…
Almost 4 years and still no different or new UI....
What exactly does that charging mode do? " charges your pad based on its current battery level, which can save energy."
Surely there's something more to it than this....if the existing charging didn't charge your pad based on its current energy level, it would explode.... And the bigger annoyance I have with the charging is that it already seems to have a smart charge of some sort in the controllers (including VRSense), that it won't charge at all if it's over a certain charge level already, meaning if you've used some battery, but not enough, it doesn't seem to top off, the light goes orange and then immediately off. Battery preserving, sure, but with batteries as small as Edge and VRSense, it means a very short next session. But that all seems controlled by the controller itself, not the console, so this new feature seems poorly translated or something maybe? I don't have a slim, so won't be able to find out.
@NEStalgia I just have a long USB cable next to my sofa that I can charge anything from a tablet, phone or PS5 Controller when needed. I just plug the controller back in afterwards or as needed. Not had a problem with battery life since I started doing this. As you said all chargers have built in overcharge detection and adjust the wattage on the fly.
@Max_the_German sorry I know it streams on a separate chip at 1080p60fpshdr, however, what I am saying is that if it could convert the main system to 1080p super sample and stream that, then it would be even better? I am guessing that the chip for streaming is having to convert the TV output image from 4k to 1080p, so it will unlikely be doing a super sample, and if the image for tv is already switched to 1080p then there would be less grunt?
If we are never going to get folders can I at least lock more than 5 games to my home bar? With how they designed it I understand why it would be silly to be able lock all of them (you would want your newly installed game to appear at the far end) but why can't I choose to lock what I want?
I have a few games locked I jump in and out or need to finish, elden ring, resi 4 and then a couple ill play after finishing up what I'm currently doing. The rest end up floating out and I genuinely forget what games I have lol. Don't get me wrong I'm not super rich but a couple of games on sale for cheap push out some others and then my newly 40 year old brain forgets 🤣
where is the explore icon in the UK?. the explore tab has some great features and widgets but only available in the US
Not sure why that last one is restricted to the slim console, sounds like it should be a software thing, but I guess there must be a hardware requirement and my launch console doesn’t have it. Oh well, mine are constantly on the dock anyway.
I guess at this point they will never add the ability to copy PS5 game saves to a USB drive. They should at least add a disclaimer on the PS5's packaging and in marketing materials: "PS+ subscription required to secure your game progress".
I do not follow the community closely, but I am sure most don't care about those features and want themes, proper folders and USB back up of PS5 only saves.
At least now I can check for updates for games not in the home screen, although they still don't update automatically.
As for me I only want save backup via USB. The did it on PS3 and PS4 but not on PS5...
Still no PSStars? This is just getting weird now Sony
I had a dream yesterday that we had folders on the homepage, unfortunately once I woke up I realized a Dream was all it will ever be 😞
@NEStalgia It turns the internal power to the USB ports off once the controllers are charged, whereas currently it stays on either for a set amount of time (3 hours) or permanently whether something is connected/charged or not.
@themightyant If you haven't had a problem with battery life, you're definitely not a PSVR2 or Edge owner......... It's like trying to run an air conditioner on a few D-cell batteries.
But yeah, I was mostly curious what this magic charging tech only in the slim is, because as described it sounds like it saves energy by not pumping energy into topped up batteries until they actually bake pizza in your PlayStation Pizza Kit 5, which the controllers don't allow anyway.
@MrHabushi Ohh, that makes sense, terrible description/translation originally. Nicer touch than the fixed time but not too functionally different then.
Anyone else still think of PS4 style folders system ? No? Just me? Okay
@TheFakulty In my understanding it is doing the exact super sampling you described. And in still images or with slow movement you can see the absence of aliasing in cases of high base resolutions.
No, I think that the issues with the PS5 implementation of Remote Play are different: disturbing compression artifacts when fast movement, high latency, no 60 Hz output (only 59.94 Hz, which PS Portal is not natively capable of), dripping frames regularly, verified by Digital Foundry with cable ethernet (!) connection to a high-end PC (!) with a best-in-class Remote Play software.
Sony would have to implement a software-based Remote Play encoding, running on the system-reserved CPU cores. Feasible? Unclear.
folders, folders, folders for the love of god FOLDERS!!!! come on already, it doesn't take years to implement
No sign of proper folders yet... something we had on the PS4...
Hopefully this means the large firmware update that's been in beta for months will be released soon.
Still No Way To Customize Home/XMB are for our own taste, getting rid of the stupid News n BS that's always popping up.
Still No Way For Streamers To Get A Better LIVE CHAT view other than the bubbles which cuts off most of a commenters comment, and no Overlays what so ever....
So nothing really....
Got it....
The one feature I want still isn't here. I want the ability to save two audio tracks for the share feature....this way we can edit out the voice chat if we want to.
@WaveBoy I thought the PS3 was pretty good. It's mid Gen PS4 that things really started going downhill. I've hated Sonny corp since the walkman though 😂
I hated Xbox at the start because Ms was ruining PC gaming while pushing the new console and I was pcmr at the time. Then I kind of embraced it mid 360 Gen. I'm at the point of hating them both this Gen though. The Sony exclusives haven't done it for me for a long while. PS3 had great ones until that darned zombie game broke it all. Then again.... What exclusives? All they had was square and that's multiplat now.
I think that really is the biggest charm of vr right now is that infant stage where everything is possible and everyone tries it. Sure it's small and indie but it's like PS1 games and even sports games seem fun. Enjoy the ride. When vr gets main steam it'll all be mmos with gatcha mtx with Facebook integration mandatory, and annual sports refreshes
I kind of agree about PS2 era, but itoh it launched with fantavision and has legendary RPGs, so I can't think too bad about it's early years. Xbox og kind of leaned into the Dreamcast motif IMO.. But at the time it was the golden age of PC gaming so all the consoles seemed pretty lame to me.... I had StarCraft darnit!
But it's true that's when consoles started shifting from being fun toys for kids to being utilitarian AV rack appliances. Well ok only Sony. Xbox was trying to be some punk rock counterculture ten angst machine and it kind of succeeded but it wasn't me.
In hindsight though that's was a great era compared to the modern gambling machine consoles
So I ended up ordering a quest 3 😂
Might not be until 3-4 weeks until I actually get it and then get a chance to set it up and use it but 8 did already order Walkabout (ok I already played it to death but I just love it so much lol), assassin's creed, MR pool, the pinball fx starter (been waiting for that to come to psvr forever.....), and it looks like table tennis eleven and the bowling are on sale..... Figure I'll get the outdoor stuff done while it's warm... I can't believe I'm paying Zuck.......
@WaveBoy sure it's white on black and plays a funeral dirge over a black abyss as it devours your soul, but everybody only uses it to play fortnite where every. Single. Thing. Is. Neon. Freaking. Purple. So nobody notices.
@WaveBoy I don't believe 99% of what you said. You still bought a PS3, PS4, and PS5 despite hating PS since the PS2 and not liking 99% of Sony exclusives? Uh huh. Sureeeeeee. Then you complain about the UI. Maybe the UI wouldnt matter so much if you actually played some games on those consoles you hate so much, that you keep buying. 😂
@WaveBoy Where else since you despise PlayStation and Xbox so much and the Switch is underpowered? Hmmmm. PC rings a bell. It's not rocket science.
@Yousef- that's completely incorrect.
There is only the new ps5 model sku.
The disc drive is an attachment, you can buy a bundle with the disc drive but it's the same console.
The original ps5 is now not being made and it is just 1 console sku with attachments.
@Bez87 I should clarify I made a mistake and was trying to phrase my comment as a question, not a statement. Hope that clears it up.
@WaveBoy Just. LOL! Wow. But okayyyyyyy. I guess? HAHAHA!
