No Man's Sky is getting yet another game-changing free update from the industrious folks at Hello Games. Named Worlds Part I, this update, available for all players today, is the largest to hit the game this year so far, making some sweeping improvements that essentially make the universe even more varied and interesting than ever.
Water has seen significant improvements, for example. New tech means it can generate waves and reflections, and ships will now be able to land on water, allowing you to explore more of ocean planets. Waves are dynamic, and react to weather and wind patterns on each world. New volumetric and atmospheric effects mean more varied conditions, including fog, blizzards, sandstorms, and more. Similarly, clouds have been upgraded too. Skies are more varied as a result of all this new weather tech. The update also adds new varieties of alien flora and fauna to the mix.
A new Starship Troopers-inspired expedition puts the emphasis on combat as you fight back against alien bugs. Also mentioned in the press release is a new mech "with heavy armour and a cool flamethrower arm", which is hard to dislike.
There's plenty more too — improved shadows, the ability to rename discoveries, walker battles, and solar ship crafting are also mentioned in the above trailer, while Sean Murray hosts a longer video on the update in a deep dive:

We probably say it every time, but it's incredible to see how much No Man's Sky has grown and evolved since its launch way back in 2016. Given the name of this update is "Part I", we can only assume there's more to come, too.

I keep thinking "what more could they possibly add at this point" and then HG are like "here's another big free update"
This game is just insane to be honest.
8 years in now and they still manage to surprise us.
A new weather system, new flora/fauna and new gameplay makes me generally excited. I'm in!
Fantastic game and hats off to that team for all the work they keep on doing to make it better.
Very impressive. I keep thinking I need to go back to this game.
@Th3solution It's so incredible now.
This is a game that I bought day 1 on PS4, and I have never gotten too far into it, but always enjoy the brief moments when I do play it. It’s a game that is very interesting for a short period, until a feeling of sameness kicks in due to the way it’s generated. That may sound like a negative comment, but it’s not intended to be. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and space exploration. There’s nothing like No Man’s Sky. I intend to update my PS5 version and jump in again soon. It’s really fun with PSVR2.
Honestly this is one of the best games of last gen given the improvements and feedback they took into account. But because it once overheated 2 different PS4s I owned I don't want to play it on PS5 😅
I really feel like I need to give this a go, but I keep seeing all this new stuff being added and worried it might just be a bit overwhelming to start it at this point!
@MickOnYourFace You'll spend alot of time in the game for sure but it eases you in quite nicely, like a warm bath that slowly rises in temperature.
I need to get this game for my PS5. I had it on my PS4 but bought the discless PS5 and can't play it anymore.
@3Above it's quite nice on ps5 and it systems can handle the heat.
I keep coming back to this game a few times a year. I'm impressed everytime. A great chill game. I'm looking forward to jumping in again.
@JuiceboxMeister I have the ps4 disc version. I have to put it in everytime to play on my ps5 and play it upgraded. I would love the discless version, but im afraid of the issue your describing.
This game continues to make Starfield look like a joke.
I keep thinking they've done everything they possibly could to redeem themselves and then some, but they just keep going. While the launch in 2016 will forever remain a cautionary tale, I've got nothing but respect and admiration for how they handled the game ever since.
It's looks like a ps5 games right now, man I really want to play this but as a shooter or rpg games (like oblivion) rather than resource collecting games. I think this is the most updated games ever, besides mmo or live-service games.
I guess that explains Murray's recent tweets which were reported the other day.
i think every positive review on here is from the developer of the game. this game is lost, repetitive, slow, every update you expect something different it always looks the same and plays the same which is boring
@Waitinonpsvr2 Or maybe other people like it and it's just not for you?
the best part is that this is labeled as part 1 , so there has to be a part 2 update right?
Wow, I seriously thought I was done with this game after spending most of last year obsessed with it. As I'm likely to make a move over to PCVR in the wake or PSVR's status, I may end up buying this on steam and starting all over again anyway! This and FFXIV.......I really need to give up eating and sleeping.
As someone who has never played, is it still worth getting into or would it be too overwhelming for a newbie?
I have been waiting for new and better fauna/flora for so long 😭 everytime they release an update I complain about it! But now my prayers have been heard!
@Waitinonpsvr2 "Repetitive and slow"
I mean, it's an exploration and survival sim with a focus on resource locating and gathering and emergent gameplay mixed with some combat. That's what it's supposed to be. It's a game you spend hours getting lost into exploring its world or collecting resources to build a particular thing or doing expeditions in the later game. It's not going to be "high adrenaline action" for short sessions except for bursts here and there. Immersing in the world is the purpose. Which is especially true if you're playing in VR as your namesake suggests.
@Jedge396 Still worth it. Unlike an MMO where the new content may be likely to just all get clustered and overwhelm with too many things at once instead of incremental additions, most of the additions to NMS just slot into the gameplay loop or improve upon things, so you'll never know that all the new stuff wasn't there all along, it'll feel like it's the way it always was when you play it for the first time.
@NEStalgia . I wanted more multiplayer. You drop on a planet and there are at least a few real people running around to interact with... something like that social interactions would be cool
@Waitinonpsvr2 Ohh, yeah, it's not an MMO with planets full of players in public world shards or anything. That having been said it does have pretty extensive multiplayer - IF - you find your own group to play with. Not my thing so I haven't looked much into it other than coop here and there with one player, but it's a huge enough games that I'm sure you can find discords with open servers and things to hop into.
This game should be pushed more for the VR side as well. It's absolutely phenomenal in VR. Truly an experience everyone should try.
Live service games wish they were as good as No Man's Sky.
Ok, here we go again! I honestly never, ever before(i play videogames since i was a little kid, now in my 40's) have played a game for EIGHT years in a row that still gets regular content drops.. One of a kind! The PSVR 2 version runs mostly great by now as well, it's THE way to play NMS this console gen. i think. If Light No Fire is going follow the same kind of business strategy/roadmap/QoL support as NMS, which it probably will, it's a day one purchase for me! Insane thought that i once payed €60 for NMS and that i'm still getting all kinds of free content as we speak. Amazing, cheers to you Hello Games!🍻🍾🔥🤘💥
Its insane how well they have supported this and they haven't asked for anything in return.
@3Above It runs really well on PS5. Its 60fps and the visuals see a big boost plus the loading times are far better.
Man, I thought this game was an absolute blast 5 years ago!
Absolutely ridiculous. I love coming back to this game. Sounds like there’ll be more of the new music as well. I hope it’s PS5/current gen only, things that weren’t possible on PS4 just to highlight the quality of it all.
I love the fact that they have created things For Light No Fire and are trying to incorporate it into NMS. I'm sure they share a lot of similarities under the hood but still nice to see this type of cross usage going on. Probably a good way to help optimize and improve things for both games when you can be ambitious and all test things in lower stakes environment.
This game probably had the biggest redemption of any game out there in my opinion
@MickOnYourFace you can adjust the settings to remove damage/health, so you can figure out crafting and what you'll need to do to survive first, then restart with the settings on normal.
@3Above I'm the same mate. I once had a relationship at 14, didn't work out, decided never to talk to anyone ever again. Couldn't be happier. Makes perfect sense.
I'm hoping there next game has this much variety and polish like all the updates they've put for NMS
@lindos 🤣 At least you got NMS to keep you busy
@Elodin yeah, I regret buying the discless version but I got it when it was next to impossible to find a PS5 so I jumped at the opportunity to own one. Can't justify buying another just to have discs but I also love bitching about all digital games not being "owned", so hypocrisy at its finest over here haha great thing is that No Man's Sky constantly goes on sale on PSN so I'll probably pick it up soon. Still have a backlog to get through.
I want to get back into this as I loved the exploration and discovery side, even the space flight.
The downer for me is the insane resource collection required to build the various components needed to move between planets. I haven't played for years now, but as I recall you needed maybe 3 components to fuel the jump engines, and each of those needed several other components, and each of those needed several other components, and so on. I just started to find it too tedious after the first half dozen jumps and gave up.
I think they added a mode that simplified things, but I seem to recall it made other stuff easier as well, which I wasn't keen on... I just wanted the travel to be streamlined.
