It seems like just yesterday that the Hideo Kojima-directed demo P.T. ("playable teaser") arrived on PS4. On 12th August 2014, in collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, the world was given a terrifying glimpse at the world of Silent Hills, and it seems we aren't the only ones wondering where all the time went.
On X, Kojima got a bit nostalgic, recalling a fresh-faced Norman Reedus and the truly terrifying psychological horror game that might have been. Of course, cursed by hindsight, we know today that Konami would ultimately cancel Silent Hills and go to the unprecedented lengths of having the demo delisted from the PSN store, which, if anything, only added to its mystique. We'll likely never know what horrors might have been in store for us had things gone differently.
The timeline in which we presently exist did give us Death Stranding and an independent, creatively liberated Kojima Productions, so we suppose it's not all bad. Still, we'll always wonder what might have been.
Can you believe it's already been a decade? Do you have the exceedingly rare P.T. downloaded to a PS4 somewhere, holding onto it for a particularly rainy day? Try not to scream in fright at the passage of time in the comments section below.

It's still the scariest thing I've ever played. I'll never forget the feeling of my blood running cold when I heard that voice on the radio demanding me to look behind me for the first time.
i cant believe this game is rare, i remember easily downloading it on my ps4 because there was nothing to play on it yet ,lol. it was advertised pretty good from what i remember. i have the matrix awakens demo or whatever on my ps5 and apparently thats rare now too. but yea this game was scary as hell, when i saw the creepy ghost lady over the balcony i called it quits.
I had an issue with my ps4 hard drive, so I lost it. It was always a pity you couldn’t re-download it. I guess “technically” it wasn’t a purchase (can’t remember if you got a zero value order confirmation). It had a lot of character. I just finished Exit 8 which only has the tiniest resemblance (still interesting though)
I wonder why Kojima didn’t end up releasing a horror game in the end anyway. I know he couldn’t have called it Silent Hills but based on PT he could have easily created another title/IP.
I still miss this demo. PT puts many so-called horror games of today to shame.
@Clytorial_Impact That's what I do not understand either. It is very easy to make something "inspired by" and get away with it. Look at all of the PUBG and COD clones out there.
Hopefully, after Death Stranding 2, that will be what he does next.
I remember when PS said PT was one of the goty and got dumped on by many commenters because it was seen as just "a demo" but time has proven PS to be right.
PT has to be one of the most influential games in the past decade.

@LifeGirl I don't know, PT had more of an impact on me than those 3 titles combined.
@RBMango
Goosebumps running up my spine at that moment.
Absolute masterclass.
People think it's so cool to hate on Kojima nowadays, because he was seen as a God for a good while, but aside from the sometimes cringey cutscenes, he goes above and beyond.
His games always have such unique moments and immense quality you just won't find anywhere else.
Easy to call Death Stranding a walking sim (while it had a very fun gameplay loop/ design) and go back to your gazillionth generic shooter
To date, PT is still in my top 5 gaming experiences. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s the best thing that was ever free to play on the PS store and the best Silent Hill adjacent piece of media. The rabbit hole is deep with this one too if you want to jump in. It’s a complex, nuanced, and complete piece of art and honestly I don’t think it was ever intended to be a “demo.” Kojima knew what this was.
@LifeGirl
No, that's definitely not "it". What a silly comment.
This game was laughed at when it was revealed live during the show. People didn't know what it was, thought it was silly.
People played the demo and started getting intrigued.
People were helping eachother out with clues in forums.
The game was a mystery and got viral. People wanted to finish the game so bad and when they finally did, BOOM a Kojima and Del Toro Silent Hill game.
Absolute madness, I still get goosebumps.
Freaking Fortnite? Get out with this nonsensical crap
Still one of the most unnerving experiences I’ve ever had playing a horror game such a shame we didn’t get the full silent hills experience. The teaser they released a while after pt looked amazing I think it was a silent hills concept footage from TGS
This is still one of the greatest gaming expirences of all time, will never forgive Konami for what they did!
@LifeGirl The vast majority of horror games over the past ten years have taken elements or downright all of what made PT special, including the first person Resident Evil games.
I got no chance to play this demo. Sigh. Does it scary AF? As many said! How this compared to RE7?
Crazy how influential this little free downloadable game was, isn't it?
I play it every year without fail. Usually in October. And I'll continue that tradition as long as my PS4 is alive and kicking.
Unfortunately, I am totally immune to both jumpscares as well as psychological horror. I recognize the eerie atmosphere, but I am not feeling it if that makes sense. Now, VR is another thing entirely luckily, lol. However, P.T. was the only non VR game that truly gave me chills.
I couldn't finish it. The game felt like something was always just over my shoulder. Analysis of the game files and camera breaking later showed that this was part of the game's design. How can 0's and 1's creep me out that bad, how do digital assets make me feel like I am being followed? Amazing!!
Has it really been 10 years already?
Crazy how fast time flies.
I can't believe it's only been 10 years since this came out. It feels like it was forever ago.
This game looked so good graphically 10 years ago and it's pretty sad that 10 years later, we're just now barely getting games that look like this - and on next gen for that matter.
I hope PS6 will have a more noticeable jump in fidelity.
Pretty sure my brother still has this on his PS4. It's a shame they couldn't of just left it on the PlayStation Store... Well they could have, but you know, Konami.
Really wish I’d had a chance to play this. By the time I got a PS4, it had already gone. Booooo!!
It's only a demo but it scary af and also inspired a lot of indie devs to make a clone. So imagine if Konami doesn't cancelled Silent Hills, i bet the full game would be amazing. It's just crazy how Konami cancelled a SH game with Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro, Norman Reedus, and potentially Junji Ito on the board.
I still have P.T on my download list but sadly it's gone from my old HDD because it got corrupted. If it still there, i would sell my PS4 for a good money.
@Clytorial_Impact From an interview, Kojima said he scared of horror movies and when Konami president asked him to make Silent Hills he said he's not confident to do it.
So probably that's why Kojima never make a horror game after he left Konami. And looking at his track record, Kojima focus always on sci-fi which probably his favorite genre.
I think theres an hdd-image around somewhere in the internet, so u could install the pt files on a blank ps4 without needing to hack something, but I think you need the license to play it, can't remember the whole process, but u may google it... and I can at least verify that it worked
@DrVenture69
You can redownload it. I did. You need a patch cable and computer/laptop, I have to find the Youtube video but once you have those 2 things then you change your ip/dns address and then you have to go into your library on ps4 and it’ll be there and once you hit redownload it’ll let you because it thinks it’s pushing it to a pc. Oddly yes it works and worked. I’ll come back and paste the video link.
Here it is:

It’s not the one I originally used years ago but it’s the same thing and actually this method seems easier.
@Slug_full_of_metal , thanks buddy! I had no idea, I’ll give that a go, I’d love to play it again😃👍
