Journey to the West-inspired Soulslike, Black Myth: Wukong, releases imminently, on 20 August for PS5. Our own review of the game will have to wait a while longer, as developer and publisher, Game Science, appears to have only sent out PC code so far. In the meantime, courtesy of IGN China, we at least have some official PS5 gameplay, allowing those interested in picking this one up some level of benchmark.
Of course, we'll need the Digital Foundrys of the world to really determine what's going on under the hood, but as we had some PS5 concerns of our own while previewing the PC version, it actually doesn't look too shabby, functional certainly. It's probably still worth holding out for some PlayStation-specific takes, but failing that, we're quite glad this trailer has seemingly been pushed out at the eleventh hour.
What do you think of this official look at Black Myth: Wukong PS5 gameplay? Are you planning on picking this one up, or will you adopt a wait-and-see approach? Begin your own journey in the comments section below.

This is less than 2 minutes of gameplay from a 40+ hour game. There's no way I'm gonna use this as a benchmark for the game's performance. Any game with performance issues still has moments of smooth gameplay.
I am excited to play this game as a slightly more relaxing adventure (read: masochist) through a fantasy world having just come out of a punishing Erdtree campaign. I will wait to see how the PS5 version runs in reviews before buying. Although the thought of invisible walls is a slight deterrent. I do love exploring freely.
I'm gutted you say it's a soulslike game. That pushes it of my list. 😔
@Bagwag82 but it's not a souls like game. It's more god of war style gameplay from what I can make out. Its so easy to just label every 3rd person action game as a souls like these days.
Hard to tell Anything from this video because of the very low quality capture.
However DF dissected concerns and it's clear that a grest deal of reconstruction is being used. I really hope. It's not FSR2. It is such a terrible option that gets the devs performance but the blurry mess the gamer rneds up with is just not it,. Especially when there are better option available.
The downgrades are clearly enough that they chose to hide it by withholding review code until release.
@Bagwag82 as monkey said, my understanding it's not really a souls Like beyond the bonfire checkpoint system. It's no where near as hard and more action combat focused on combos and dodging.
@Bagwag82 id say its more loosely akin to shadow of the colossus with filler in between big bosses. They even asid on here its not as difficult as the souls games.
Definitely waiting - PC only codes is a red flag all day, every day. And this brief glimpse does nothing to convince me that all is well with the PS5 version.
Mechanically it's much closer to a souls-like than it is to the rebooted GoW but it's much more forgiving than a typical souls-like. Most reviews seem to call it a boss rush with very little to do outside of running towards the next big encounter, that's more my concern.
ok, I'd better take Stellar Blade.
I can hold off with this one until the review at least.
Looking at the graphics and considering PC performance, id be surprised if it ran 60fps on PS5
Yep, must admit this is why I embraced next gen gaming, to play stuff that "doesn't look too shabby".
I like the dynamic camera. Looks like something From couldn't even do after a gazillion games with their static camera.
This looks more fluid in terms of animations, camera and movement.
Also, games that are crucified for some weird political ideology (they're being paid for their agenda btw like the Screenrant review and the absolute nonsense that turned out to be false by that one loony at IGN) are the ones I'm gonna support 😊
I support this developer and wish them success with this title.
this looks mad.. ps5 got this easy
Certainly reasons to be optimistic from this trailer, I guess all will be revealed shortly. Im not rushing to any judgement..
@WhiteRabbit Agreed. But I've seen plenty of the game from the PC build. Hard too see through youtube encoding, but this fight at least suggests it's pretty decent res and smooth frame rate, so I take a positive view based on this until I see any proof that there are issues.
I don't get caught up in the 'prophecies of doom' that so many that post here do. Unless or until there are reports suggesting issues, I will assume there are none and simply wait for the reviews
@Northern_munkey I think the concern isn't the souls like game mechanics, more the souls like difficulty (the default will be hard for more casual gamers). When I hear souls like I think a game that is too difficult for me to play because I don't have enough time to learn the mechanics. This 20 hr breeze would turn into a 50-60 slog for me as I play my games on Easy/Normal.
looks like very low settings but can't judge for sure because the video quality sucks.
@KundaliniRising333 They did an analysis, and they guess it is FSR2 upscaling (more specifically FSR3.1 upscaling, and not TSR due to performance) PLUS FSR3 frame generation from 30 to 60 fps!!
I don’t want to imagine playing a fast Soulslike with basically 30 fps and extra lag due to frame generation, and with bad picture quality.
I’m going to wait until we get a physical version with a physical disc.
Right now, i have a huge backlog of games (incl. spiderman 2, star ocean, octopath traveller 2, Cygni, and about 10 other beat-em ups and shmups) and I have my pre-order for Space Marine 2 so I can wait a while before a proper physical release and a bunch of inevitable patches are applied.
I want this game and would be happy to buy day one, But considering a large amount of games release somewhat unoptimized and then they patch it for months. I’ve quit buying many games day one.
The last game that comes to mind is Jedi Survivor. I was going to buy day one. They were going to get the full $70 but it was kind of janky and then I didn’t buy it for months.
If I see some proof that this game has solid performance throughout, then I’ll buy itthis week otherwise, I’ll get it sometime in the future.
Looks good from that ps5 gameplay.short but cool gameplay.word up son
It’s a soulslike? Every review is adamant about it not being a soulslike.
Very much looking forward to playing this game, but the fact that so many concerns are surrounding the ps5 release is very worrisome. The console has been great at throwing out PS4 quality games at 60fps and too many people have been all over that, but as soon as something that rightly pushes the console to perform expected next generation graphical standards, it may struggle? I always thought the PS5 generation started way too early and if this doesn’t perform well on the console then all my fears will come true.. That means that this game would possible need the PS5 Pro to reach the desired levels of quality for the title and that doesn’t bode well for an Xbox release either. I think I’ll hold off on PS6 when the time comes as I really don’t want to go through another ‘generation’ like this one.
@KundaliniRising333 It's an unreal engine game right? Surely they'd use TSR over FSR?
Just pre-ordered it, I'm sure I can't be as disappointed as I was when I found out what game "Werewolf The Apocalypse" really was lol
It literally feels like anything even remotely action-RPGish is a bloody soulslike and I'm beyond over it.
Why are you all so hell bent on spreading doubt over this game?
@Specky Screenrant is gross, and PC Gamer was still quoting IGNs translation.
Push/ Pure are the only places I can go for " gaming news' anymore.
Bonkers
@Chaosbros They are actually working with Nvidia I think too.
I'll wait
Yes pushsquare that is it
A monkey man with a staff is not a theme that grabs me. Will pass on this one.
Even the 4K trailer looks like it's about 570p upscaled to 900p
In less then 6 hours i shell be playing it so i will post my thoughts when i do.
Black Myth: Wo Long?
Doesn't seem like anyone cared about the controversy that western journalists were trying to stir up because the game just went over 1 million concurrent players on steam lol.
Edit: it surpassed Cyberpunk & Elden Ring and has the highest concurrent peak for a single player game ever on Steam and it is now 4th on the all time peak list.
I think we can pretty much all agree on the fact that bloodborne is one of the best games ever created yes? Everybody loves bloodborne and rarely have a bad word to say about it. That game had some of the worse performance issues outside of demons souls on the ps3 yet its heralded as one of the best. I can't see wukong being anywhere near as bad as bloodborne performance wise yet it will get slated because the frame rate may be a bit inconsistent in places or the resolution drops to keep it stable etc,etc,etc...what's the difference here? What am I missing?
The game released and its fine, though people were right to be somewhat concerned. Personally I knew this can't be a Cyberpunk 2077 situation (you were exaggerating guys), that game released on the threshold of two console generations and it was on the following systems besides PC: PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X. When it comes to consoles, Black Myth Wukong is on PS5 and PS5 only, far easier to have the compatibility sorted out.
Edit: I forgot about Google Stadia, lol.
@Northern_munkey
I was a bit late to the "souls like" party, but now really enjoy them - not sure if the fact i had an xbox360 rather than a PS3 had anything to do with it.
I tried bloodborne first around 2016 on PS4 pro and found it unplayable back then due to its performance/framerate - and my sensitivity has massively increased since then due to the way in which newer TVs seem to work (which is common), but also maybe age / having played games at locked 60fps for so long.
Elden ring was very very bad imo until VRR was released on Sony kit a month or so after.
Fps and performance is the 1st and most important thing i look for in any game i like the look of now, and i have stopped pre ordering anything NOT 1st party Sony - once this 'checkbox' has been ticked, then i will look further into the reviews / previews etc to see if I want the game (though if performance is within reach, i may well keep an eye on patch reviews and buy in a sale after performance is fully fixed).
Im just hoping for a bloodborne 60fps patch, or remaster, then I will get to play the game as it still looks like a really good game otherwise.
I still can't tell what I think of this game. The launch hype is purely marketing driven and these marketing driven hype wave FOTM games tend to fade months later as people finally start finding the flaws. People say it's not a souls-like, but watching videos of it it LOOKS like a souls/sekiro type thing. Hearing "boss rush" really puts me off. Bosses are my least favorite part of any game. I grind through them just to get the chore done, it's the rest of the game that I'm interested in, and it's sounding like this has not much else going on.
@MrMagic Do they have region metrics? One factor in this game is Simplified Chinese alternates with English as the #1 language on Steam. This is a Chinese-made game, featuring a classical Chinese fable setting, on a platform which at times has its larger player base in China, where China is hyper-nationalist about their own things.
No question the game is marketed in the ultra extreme and that gave it worldwide demand, including being marketed by Nvidia as, basically, an NV40 tech demo, which also helps, but the surprisingly high numbers are easily going to be bolstered by China itself having much above average interest in this.
