Legendary Teal'c actor Chris Judge is not known for his restraint. However, in his starring role as God of War's modern Kratos, it seems he's learned how to control the Spartan rage within. When Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann made the outrageous allegation that video games "don't really have acting", Judge quickly set him to rights.
It all began when Hartmann spoke to IGN about the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes, with actors seeking additional protections against AI (thanks PSLS). The Amazon Games exec made some ill-advised comments for someone in his position, positing that video games "don't really have acting. The majority of the team sits in programming, and that's not going to go away because that's all about innovation."
Judge apparently saw this take online and responded sardonically: "Thank goodness there's really no acting in video games—absolutely brilliant." He then shared a clip of Ashley Johnson's performance during that most harrowing of all scenes in The Last of Us Part II, and it's hard not to see how silly Hartmann's assertion is. Beware of motion-capped spoilers in the clip below!

It's amazon. Judge shouldn't take their words seriously.
I’m surprised amazon hasn’t replaced all the their executives with a.i, I guess there’s the possibility the a.i could develop some form of basic decency; whereas the powers that be know a human executive will never develop that fault.
@Khayl "He then shared a clip of his and Ashley Johnson's performance"
Judge isn't in the clip, is he? As far as I know, he wasn't in the game at all
The issue is that there’s actors pouring their soul into these games and the industry doesn’t treat them with the respect that they deserve. Read a BBC article a week or so ago about the way that mocap actors on games are being pushed into increasingly horrible scenes like rape, except with far, far less protections and professionalism in place that you’d get on a film or TV set. This guy’s a moron but it’s less that we should just say he’s wrong and move on and more that we should see that his attitude is fairly commonplace and that there’s a lot of work to be done.
@FuriousMachine he played Abby
There isn't much acting in recent movies and shows Amazon. Videogames have better writers and actors that actually care about their roles. Most of them don't get paid well and outperform most celelbrities who only care about money and fame.
@FuriousMachine haha you are correct, just a typo. Updated!
Most times its rubbish B grade acting though, look at Star Wars Outlaws. And a lot of TV shows are becoming just as bad.
Amazon isn't that bad. It has some brilliant documentarys and I loved the documentary about killing joke. I can't figure out why this is in the "red" section of pushsquare...isn't this reserved for all things pc?
@Northern_munkey I thought it was for all things Kratos
You don’t get to be an Amazon Exec without being either:
A) a moron
B) a nasty little arrogant soulless gremlin
C) both
@Digit2021 @Lavishturtle Two examples of opposite opinions that are both harming perceptions of these actors. It’s factually true that acting in video games has not yet reached a point of parity with movies and TV shows due to even modern mocap not capturing the full range of human emotion and subtlety that you’ll see on screen. Any attempt to claim that performances in video games are of a higher quality than what you’d get in a movie or TV show is fairly nonsensical.
At the same time, downplaying the acting as being B grade undersells the work they do put in. The industry is maturing faster and faster every year and voice work specifically is fantastic especially in games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Final Fantasy XVI and Disco Elysium, which all treat their script and cast with the respect they deserve. Pointing to Star Wars Outlaws is egregious considering that trailers have shown performances to be just as talented as 99% of Star Wars acting, while there are games with far more amateurish performances due to a much smaller budget or one of a million other factors.
In reality, performances differ across projects exactly like movies and TV shows but I’d argue that we’ve still yet to see the ceiling of full-body mocap performances in this medium, and that won’t change until actors, and writers, are given the same freedom, support and room for growth that the visual arts have been cultivating for over 100 years.
@Starkei best comment ever. I never thought I could find a hilarious comment for this serious article 🤣 😂 😅 😆
@Northern_munkey It’s red because it’s a God of War-related article.
@VeldinX usually it's red because it's to do with pc related articles..its how it's been in the past but hey I guess because it's GOW is just as good a reason as any.
@Northern_munkey Was it about God of War on PC by any chance? Concord articles are still blue, for example, even though they also have the PC tag.
The man rose to being Gaming Exec at Amazon and he has the attitude that there's no real acting in games. I think his parents told him cartoons were documentary teams following unusual looking people.
Who named those guys, seriously ?
How can they be ranked so high in their company without knowing anything to the very subject they're supposed to master ?
Additional note : this clip is indeed extremely impressive. I cannot imagine the difficulty to act, to project yourself in a character, with that kind of technical stuff (dots on your face, cameras everywhere, plastic toys as weapons...) all around you.
It must takes some extra dedication and imagination... What an impressive performance.
@VeldinX there have been other articles in the past that relate to pc ports that pop up in red. Horizon zero dawn was one. Its not that important in all fairness I was just being pedantic.
@Northern_munkey doesn't make sense to me that GoW is in the PC section seeing as it's a PS game first and foremost. The world has gone crazy! 😁
@Northern_munkey No worries. It’s just a weird quirk of the site. Sometimes the colour scheme will be themed to the game series featured, so GoW can be red, Horizon orange, Uncharted a grey-blue. Doesn’t happen too often so it’s always a surprise to see. 😂
Quite a few examples of great acting in video games- Death Stranding, GOW itself, Far Cry, the later Final Fantasy games, the voice acting in Persona, probably more if I had more time and imagination….
The Amazon exec doesn't know what he's talking about. There is some superb acting in video games.
My all time favourite is E. Page in "Beyond: Two souls". It was so incredible, it left a lasting impression on me. It also somehow managed to make it my favourite game of all time (with Ni no Kuni and Journey close behind)
@naruball Joel and Ellie, that relationship was real to me because of the acting......and then TLoU2 went and ruined it all because of the writing.
Well this reminds me of that time Roger Ebert stated that video games can never be art.
@naruball @riceNpea both great examples for me I would also have to shout out that final scene in TT Walking Dead Season 1 between Lee & Clementine - heartbreaking!
@Mostik not seen that, but you reminded me of the prologue of TLoU with Joel and Stephanie. Who didn't cry or at least get emotional when THAT happened? 😭
@DIGIT2021 I had more feeling towards the Last of Us acting then most movies. My younger brother even got upset when something happens to Joe in the Last of Us.
Christopher judge went full kratos on him for that ridiculous comment.😀 haha.word up son
@Flaming_Kaiser
I agree. The voice acting in God of War, Last of Us, Spider-Man 2 have been top notch. But then there are some games where voice acting is just nahh. That goes for TV too. There have even been Amazon exclusives where the acting was subpar.
I think that the video games that I play are better written, better acted and better edited than most modern TV series and movies.
@Mostik yeah, that one was really heartbreaking.
As for the TLoU (@riceNpea), I haven't played it yet, but I'll take everyone's word for it.
@Bobobiwan Unfortunately, being exec doesn’t really require you to be master of the subject for the thing you’re in charge of… You just have to know how to buy companies and make money. This dude is unfortunately very skilled in that since he co-found 2k and was president of the publishing label before he join Amazon in 2018.
@AverageGamer " he co-found 2k"
O gawd. Now it all makes sense. 2k makes even EA look good. People love Rockstar's games but the publisher is so horrendous. It didn't make sense that Amazon that's so tight with hollywood would be so incompetent, but a 2k guy....now I understand.
@riceNpea @Northern_munkey God of War is a PC franchise now, get with the times. Besides, it's not red, it's more of a maroon? Wine color maybe? How that's PC or GoW related either, I'll never know, but Sammy or Ant is probably colorblind and thought it was Nvidia green or AMD red?
@Starkei Oh, I thought he was Callaway.
That guy from Amazon has no gaming making experience at all not one shred of it he's a numbers guy to satisfy Bazos who's has always wanted to have a toe in every pie he can
@Hyena_socks Just like nvidia boss?
Coming from somebody who works for the company who made New World,.haha, don't make me laugh, they haven't even earned an opinion
I’ve been in business meetings with Hartmann, when he was a bigwig at Take 2.
He was arrogant, greedy, condescending and insufferable, which are the “qualities” required, in order to fail upwards in the higher echelons of business management.
@Fartingale They can't use AI because they are probably more human then them probably more decency.
@Digit2021 It's still a terrible response from a suit who has never been outside of its comfort zone his personal little bubble. Movies and TV they have more then enough horrible actors. The actors in terrible soaps are a great example.
