Atlas Fallen seemed to just come and go when it first launched this time last year, but the action-focused RPG was still fairly well received. Those who gave it a shot seemed to think it was pretty solid, and while critic reviews leaned into lukewarm territory with 6s and 7s, developer Deck13 decided to stick with the title.
The studio's continued efforts have resulted in Reign of Sand — a truly massive update that's now available to download. Officially described as "the ultimate version of Atlas Fallen", this is essentially an overhaul of the game, complete with an expanded map and new enemies. "Revamped progression, new quests, reworked voice acting, additional difficulty and ‘New Game+’ modes," are also highlighted in the press release. "Perfect for both returning players and newcomers," it concludes.
With colossal updates like this, there's always going to be a touch of cynicism. People will question why it took a whole year to implement such key improvements, and why they weren't present to begin with. But at the end of the day, Deck13 could have quite easily walked away from Atlas Fallen. Instead, it's seemingly delivered on a much better version of the game — and that's worthy of some praise.

Had no idea they were doing this, but I have been meaning to buy it at some point. Might be worth checking out now.
I’d like to get this, especially given the extra work they’ve put in. I loved the Surge games and want to support Deck13, but this one just didn’t call out to me when it came out… Sounds like now is the right time to let my Atlas Fall!
@ear_wig @Kiefer-Sutherland recommend this as a very solid 7/10 experience. it is a fun old school PS2 kind of game with not a ton of originality but it makes up for it with good gameplay. if it is on a decent discount go for it
Just booted it back up. This game is criminally underrated, and I hope at least a few more people give it a chance now.
For those interested there's currently a sale on the game on the PlayStation store, going for £26.99.
I know I shouldn't be bothered by it but that trophy icon...
This has been on my wishlist for a while now. With this new big update and it being on sale…I’m tempted 🤔
Was aware of this update coming, and just read a review on another site. In there opinion, although improved, they still have issues with the combat. Maybe on a deep sale at some point.
Just picked it up for £26.99, let's see what it's all about.
I've been waiting for a big price cut to jump in. I know it got mediocre reviews but I enjoy this type of game usually.
Dang it I completed it a few days ago XD now my plat is under 100%. Guess il have to play some more lol
Good enough for me, just ordered the physical for under 23€. Thanks.
Yep, that's more than enough for me to jump in.
@Kiefer-Sutherland Try CTEX, they had it for a fiver when I was there today.
I have completely forgotten about this game, but I might pick it up. Looks rad.
I rented it from GameFly, and it's bad, like BAD. Let's be real, if it was that great of a game to start with...it wouldn't have required an overhaul. Hopefully it improves the experience for people who have already purchased it, but I'm not going near it again.
It just does not pay to buy a game when it releases. Wait a while, let it get patched, lett things get added, and probably getting it at a discount.
They’re really are so many RPGs out there! This is why I love this gen! Almost reminiscent of the PS2 days.
Ironically as someone who rather liked this game as it was but was only around 2/3rds of the way through it this kind of screws me over. At least I think it does.
It's neat they wanted to keep working on and improving their game. Like I said I liked it, it was worth supporting. But they've said that this is such a massive update that you should probably completely restart the game which... I have a hard time seeing myself doing.
So by "improving" their game they've basically put me in a position where I might have to abandon it completely. Which is kind of garbage.
It's not a short game and while I had maybe another ten hours in me... replaying the whole thing just to get back to where I was? There's too many games for that.
Although at the moment there's not enough space on my HDD to download the update so... work around? I can technically finish the game I bought, provided I do it before making any space on the the hard drive. Can't say that's a feel good solution; I don't play games under a time crunch, I play games when I choose to for enjoyment ya know.
Pretty fun game that I played through with a buddy. Need a trophy clean up play through so glad that it will be "fresh" content!
Its a good AA game though i never finished it so this is a good excuse to jump back in.
@Tevor The update was only 4GB for me how little space do you have? Worth noting the update shrinks the game by around 5GB so its worth getting for that.
Really enjoyed this game back then, I might pop back in to get the platinum.
@Tevor That seems a little extreme. I don't know what they said exactly, but surely you should be able to continue your game in progress. They probably meant that to get the maximum out of the update, it's best to start a fresh save. That's usually how these things are.
It would be better if you could completely turn off updates on a game by game basis though, unless they're online games.
How about a re-review to let us know if it is now a truly better game?
@DennisReynolds Oh it's fully full. I need to get an expansion drive. We've been at the uninstall x to install y for a while now.
@Ainu20 I do wish it was game by game. I get the oversight though as this is the only time I can think of where the situation has ever come up for me personally.
Anyways here's the quote from the reveal;
"While you’ll be able to carry over progress you made on your old character like equipment and loadouts to “Reign of Sand,” starting a new playthrough is highly recommended for the optimal experience to fully immerse in the breadth of new features and enhancements."
And they talk about new environments, voice acting, characters, etc, etc.
Its implicit that you don't HAVE to restart... but come on. It's also pretty clear you're intended to. It'd be pretty weird to load up a save two thirds of the way through the game having already bypassed all the new characters and other features they're talking about.
Like a cutscene starts and whatever character they added that Ben Starr is voicing is there, being a super important NPC (because why else make a point of promoting that you got Ben Starr), and you just kind of go "Who is this? What's happening?"
Nah. That's weird. At least it is to me anyways. It's like a book changing half way through reading it.
@Tevor Yeah the expansion drive is pretty much a requirement now especially with 100GB+ games becoming very common now.
