Enough about the PS5 Pro has leaked now for us to know it’s coming. Of course, the current Sony climate means it won’t tell us about the system until the last possible second – probably unexpectedly, in the most matter-of-fact way possible, during a random Tuesday lunchtime. Anyway, it sounds like developers are expecting it to be unveiled imminently, and as we’ve been reiterating for a little while now: the platform holder didn’t suddenly decide to return to Tokyo Game Show this year on a whim.
Here’s the rumour, then: Italian outlet Multiplayer said on a Twitch stream that it was told directly by a studio at Gamescom this week that the console is coming soon. That story was supported by WCCF Tech, which reports an unnamed team told it that it’s received specs for the supercharged system and that it will run Unreal Engine 5 much better than the current PS5 console. That’s big news, seeing as a lot of titles are starting to adopt the new engine.
WCCF Tech adds that the studio it spoke to was “not a big one”, so it’s surmising from this scenario that a lot of developers currently have access to the PS5 Pro, and not just major first-party teams like Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch.
Of course, none of this is particularly surprising: we’ve been hearing about the upgraded system for over a year now, and despite the lack of confirmation from Sony, it’s expected to be released before Christmas. It’s probably worth mentioning that the PS4 Pro was unveiled on 7th September, ahead of a 10th November launch date. If Sony’s new console follows a similar trajectory, then we should hear official confirmation within the next couple of weeks.

- Yes, I always want the best possible graphics and performance
- Maybe, but it depends on features and price
- No, I don't think there's any need for new hardware right now

It's one of the worst kept secrets at this point. It's a console I'm unlikely to get, Astro Bot is the game I'm most looking forward to and that will look and play great on the base PS5 and from the rumoured specs, it won't come close to my PC either
I don't see it being revealed at TGS, maybe at Sony's next Showcase which hopefully won't be far away. I can definitely see them showing GTA 6 gameplay running on the PRO as a demo.
If the PRO is quite smaller than the original then I may get one, although I may need one anyway as my PS5 is having some issues lately where every now and then I turn it off and it won't turn back on unless I unplug it first, so yeah maybe time for an upgrade.
The fact that this is going to be going up against a new xbox that just has slightly more memory than the current one that no one is buying is going to be fun to observe 🙃 strange times in console world
I hope it sells barely better than an Xbox, because it's not even close to being necessary.
@Frmknst You're the embodiment of Grumpy Cat on this site.
I'm usually someone who jumps on new hardware day one, but I might actually wait and see with this one. My backlog is so large, and so many of those games are PS4 games or indies or games that probably won't benefit much from a Pro upgrade. I'll get it eventually, and then I'll have a backlog of AAA stuff - Ragnarok and FFXVI are the first two that come to mind - but there's so much I can play first.
I was hoping the new CEO would bring a new direction in terms of player inclusion. The old fashioned art of being ‘open’ really is gone from Sony isn’t it.
Yeah, after PSVR2 I'm definitely holding fire on this one. I mean, once bitten and all that.
The difference is, @Ravix, the Pro is an upgrade to the standard PS5. All the new Xbox's are simply variations. They are just more options, which is no bad thing.
The next actual upgrade to the Xbox Series is rumoured to be coming in 2026, though I still think that there is a possibility that the Series will actually be the last Xbox console, and that by then Xbox will just be Microsoft Studios and be a fully third-party publisher...
Hypothetically rumoured allegations are the new news.
From a financial point of view, a PS5 pro would make sense for Sony, but I'm not sure it's needed. If people want higher fidelity, they would turn to PC, unless playstationism is a religion or a cult I'm not aware of.
Great news since my eyesight was damaged after playing LOTR: Gollum and the doctor prescribed me only 4k120fps or 8k60fps gaming
@tangyzesty
And yet I disagree. It's absolutely necessary to keep the hardcore player engaged in the eco system. Saying it's not necessary is the equivalent of saying a new graphics card or CPU for PC is not necessary. Taken in isolation probably not, but...
My PS5 works perfectly fine so if Sony wants to sell me on a Pro, they need to show some software that takes advantage of it. Until then, my wallet stays closed.
@Fiendish-Beaver I know, a variation of a console that barely sells anyway. It's going to be weird to see an actual upgrade going up against the same thing that has already long since peaked
(I bought the Xbox on a real down slope myself 😅 as their early showcase was quite engaging for once, but since then they have done nothing but shoot themselves in the foot over and over, and this seems like a crowing glory to that)
@Rhaoulos
When people always say this, they very rarely mention about the cost differential. A high end PC is going to set you back at least £2k, which isn't an insignificant amount of cash. Versus a console around 25% the cost...
"Enough about the PS5 Pro has leaked now for us to know it’s coming."
Keep telling yourself that. There hasn't been a single reliable leak on the PS5 Pro since people started speculating about it.
I mean how are you liking your Switch Pro? Yeah, I thought so. Enjoy waiting for a machine that likely doesn't even exist at all.
Cool we will see soon.word up son
@tangyzesty @Shwing indeed, definitely necessary, and it also allows for this beautiful transition where people like me buy a pro, and we sell or give our old consoles to someone else who may have not owned a ps5 yet for various reasons. Thus growing the community and giving new life to older tech we are moving on from 😄
Oh, I absolutely agree, @Ravix, they have dropped so many balls this generation (and the last one for that matter) that it's amazing that there are any balls left in the Universe. It's a shame, because we need strong competition between the PlayStation and the Xbox to keep innovation going, and to stop either of them becoming complacent (something that Sony could be accused of).
I think ultimately that Microsoft need to put all Xbox gamers out of their misery and give them a hard and fast definitive answer as to what their plans are. I mean, would you buy an Xbox console next generation based on what we currently know? I know I wouldn't. They may have a huge pipeline of AAA games coming through the system, that will arrive in the next year or 3, but I still don't think that buying an Xbox is something that I will do next generation, as much as anything because I suspect that everything will be coming to the PlayStation too...
@Fiendish-Beaver imagine how much it is going to annoy the fan base if the consoles have a similar release date too. What is available today? Oh yes, an upgraded PS5 that plays all PS5 exclusives and some Xbox first party games, or the same exact Xbox console with a different paint job and a bit more memory 😬😬😬 I believe this will be the moment that they fully throw Phil under the bus and pretend everything will be okay next time
IF it ever comes out the announcement window for Holidays closes next month.
Rumours also have it that we might have a Showcase by Sony on september.
I'll pick one up for sure.
I'm a fan of console hardware in general so I'm an easy sell for an upgrade like this.
@UltimateOtaku91 My PS4 Pro did that exact same thing a few times. I never figured out what caused it.
Graphics are meaningless to the average consumer (i.e. not someone who comments on websites like these) and that has been proven over and over again by the likes of Minecraft and Fortnite tearing up everything that anyone else has produced for the last ten years. Even GTA5 is still running PS3 graphics with slight tweaks. And that is exactly what we are going to be talking about here with the Pro isn't it? Slight tweaks.
Gone are the days of the 2000s when you had actual leaps in absolutely everything console to console. It is all now - slight - tweaks.
Slightly clearer HD. Slightly faster. Slightly more memory. Sorry, but my wallet is only going to open for the PS6 at this point. And that will probably be for GTA 6 given how we all know that it'll be on it.
@Weebleman I’ve actually brought mine back out lately and have been enjoying it. Really good VR graphics on that thing, it just needs more Gran Turismo’s and Resi 4’s!!. I’ve just finished the Jurassic Workd Afternath game and it was good stuff.
Gonna buy as soon as its announced. If it comes with a bump in resolution for psvr2 then even better.
@Frmknst nihilism is at the heart of everything.
Take my money I want PS5 Pro now.
@Mikey856 I've been playing mine more of late (zombieland is worth a punt) but like you say, it just needs more killer apps. It feels like the dirty stepchild at the minute
You know how we don't know when that new PS5 console is coming out....well, I heard whispers that we still don't know when it's coming out, and I thought you should know.
A state of play or showcase reveal is likely in September to reveal it. I expect a price drop on the base model too.
PS4 Pro had a point - 4K visuals.
I'm barely starting up my PS5 Tub o' Lard at the moment - Dragon's Dogma 2 was a total let down, so perhaps Dragon Age will redeem the RPG genre on the PS5?
At the moment, I'm playing Diablo 4 on an SSD-equipped, quiet PS4 Pro and from the lovely UI to the quick loading times, I feel like the PS5 is just a waste of £500 so I'm certainly not going to drop £600 on a souped up version of such disappointment. I mean apart from fixing the obvious weaknesses in the 5's hardware, what's it going to do? 8K visuals? No-one cares. 4K @ 60fps? Shouldn't the current one be capable of that? The 4 Pro was kicking 4K chequerboard visuals at 30fps, sometimes higher so why is the 5 having such trouble?
Bring on the PS6....
I'm gonna wait for the ps6 pro. After this awful generation I'm at least gonna try and get a great lifespan out of my current ps5. It's one of my biggest regrets buying a ps5 and not sticking to my base ps4
Me and my wallet are ready, announce it already sony!
Brace yourselves for being underwhelmed with a sidenote on psblog.
Anyways, I see a brighter future with portable, low wattage hardware with ai cores to upscale and interpolate frames to pleasing results.
Alone a little programme called Lossless Scaling is a testament of the potential of ai upscaling and frame generation.
This old school brute force hardware arms race is coming to an end soon and I'm all for it.
Does anybody care?
@OldGamer999 so you can play Astro bot and Lego hero horizon with slightly better frames?
@GigaGaia the existence of the ps5 pro was leaked by the same guy that leaked the slim and the detachable drive, and the PS Portal. It's pretty much certain.
@Toot1st
Yep I want the best on my tv and very best experience.
Which happens to be a Sony tv.
@LifeGirl "Graphics are meaningless to the average consumer"
But the Pro isn't aimed at the average consumer, they will just buy the cheapest option available (Series S sells way more than X). PS5 Pro is for the hardcore that want that extra power! Is like Samsung & Apple releasing a Ultra and Pro Max version of their phones with bells and whistles.
@WizzNL it will be much like the Xbox series consoles situation. The game will need to perform well enough on the base PS5 after all that is where the majority of the player base will be playing. So I wouldn’t be too worried about a game not running well on base PS5.
Did that studio happen to be the same one working on Abandoned?
I know the pro is aimed at fixing UE5 (which i understand is very GPU heavy), and I sadly think that as soon as the Pro is launched UE5 games will run like literal slideshows on base PS5, but I would still like to see a bit more on the CPU side than rumoured.
If things stand as the rumoured specs the Pro will be absolutely essential for UE5 games, but might not do much that you can actually see for games run on other engines.
@Rhaoulos The PS4 Pro wasn't received that badly was it. Still a console is easier cheaper then a PC where the video card is almost bigger then the PS5.
@WizzNL The PS4 ran fine the whole generation for me? The PS4 Pro was just better looking and at a higher fidelity and resolution.
@Blaze215 You have had a pretty good life if buying a PS5 is one of your biggest regrets.
@Stevemalkpus lol good point maybe i should have added 'recent' regrets to that
@playstation1995 for some reason I always have to read your comments for the “word up son” at the end. Love it lol.
I’ll definitely be getting this PS5 pro. As when the PS6 comes out, The first five years of PS6 will be gross generation most likely. So i figure the pro will give me plenty of headway as I highly doubt PS6 will have exclusive next generation content upfront.
'Graphics are meaningless to the average consumer....'
Totally incorrect. Graphics is the one thing the AVERAGE gamer understands and uses as a measure and a comparison tool.
Graphics has been the main driver for every console generation since the advent of gaming itself, because its the most immediate parameter recognisable to the average casual gamer that progression and improvement has been made. It's what all platform holders, every generation, have advertised ahead of all other capabilites, and what they prioritised during console design. That's why there's been huge improvements to the GPU each time, but the CPU saw minor improvements until PS5 and Series X came along.
Look at UE5 that people are cooing over. The average gamer doesn't care about how it makes the devs life easy, they look on in awe of the graphics.
I'm excited about this, going to be a big deal for anyone with a 120hz tv on the games that support it.
I’m in only if the price is right and by that I mean reasonable.
It would not surprise me one bit it the reason Sony have not confirmed the existence of the Pro, @Ravix, is so that they can do precisely that! As soon as Xbox tell us when the new consoles will be out, Sony will give us the release date for the Pro to coincide so as to do maximum harm to Microsoft. Most of it will be Microsoft's doing, but it'll be down to Sony to drive in the final nail...
@SteveJaye. Haha.thanks playa.word up son means true that man or woman.im a black man from new york.thats the way we talk.and im highly influence by old school rap music.nas.wu tang clan.mobb derp.onyx.kool g rap.etcetc thay say it.word up son
@playstation1995 ...and Cameo, surely?! 😁👍
It's impressive how salty owners of hardware are for upgraded versions... Waiting for those who buy a Pro to complain about the PS6 and on and on and on...
No chance, I’ve bought nearly every major console since the Sega Megadrive and this has been the most disappointing generation for games. I’ve probably played more blurays on that monstrosity than games…
Hopefully it will be a lot easier to get hold of than the base PS5 at launch.
Maybe it's very unlikely, but I really hope that when the PS5 Pro finally comes out, it will come with good trade-in programs from retailers. Though honestly I don't know who have more say on rolling out trade-in programs, the retailers themselves or Sony.
@Fiendish-Beaver except, if a pro is coming (and especially this year) MS will have the dev kit. They will know exactly what is inside (because of porting games over) So MS can make sure the nextbox is significantly more powerful… in turn it means the ps6 would then be more powerful still as they haven’t rushed development one would guess.
@Rhaoulos
Huh? Why would I want to game on the PC if I want something better than the PS5? Then you could have said the same for every PS4 owner that wanted more power.
I don't want to play games on a 27 inch screen with a keyboard and mouse. I know I can get a controller hooked up but most PC gamers I know don't do that. Anecdotal but still.
I want to play games on the 77 inch OLED with HDR and all that good stuff. Plus I love the ease of the PlayStation ecosystem, interface and store.
I've been building PCs since I was like 14 and I have never felt the urge to game on a PC. I've always been a console guy.
The cost to performance ratio for a PS5 compared to a comparable PC is much higher. Biggest bang for buck to get a PS5. Same will apply for a PS5 Pro and I will most certainly be getting it.
Seems like a waste as all multiplatform games still have to work on the Xbox series s. Also what really is going to be majorly different on the ps5 pro then ps5. Graphics are now at a point where it is minuscule improvements. Load times are fine. 60FPS is probably the only thing that can be improved but honestly still don't see much value in games being at 60 instead of 30 FPS. Unless I real valid reason can be sold to the consumer i don't think the pro is going to be well received. Especially not in this economy.
@arzis100193
I can't play at 30fps any more. It just looks and feels bad.
I can tolerate 40fps. But only people who have a 120hz screen can take advantage of that.
4k/60fps would be welcomed by many many people.
I’m still on a PS4 Slim, and see no compelling reading to upgrade to a PS5 yet or to a rumoured PS5 Pro. It doesn’t help that I think they’re too big and butt-ugly. The wait continues…
@arzis100193 Wukong, for example, skipping Xbox for now could be because they can't get it to work on Series S. Buldurs Gate 3 didn't come out on Xbox initially for similar reasons, until Spencer changed his mind on console parity. I can see more devs skipping xbox because of the Series S.
Loads times are longer than the start of the PS5. We started the gen on 2 second loading times, now 10 is about normal (well, for wukong anyway).
And well if you can't tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, I don't know what to tell you. I guess you don't play many fast paced games?
30fps doesn't bother me much, but 60 is still better
@GreatAuk I feel the same way. Been building PCs a long time but don't game on them. When I did, I'd spend more time in settings than the game. That's why I like consoles, although I sometimes can't pick between performance or graphics modes.
If a pro came out and ran 4k60 more frequently, and was still cost effective, I'd probably buy it. Although maybe I should upgrade my TV to OLED first.
I've only bought 4 discs this gen, so I'd probably switch to digital while im at it and save £100
@dschons Perhaps Sony should invest that money in more games than new hardware. Sounds better to me.
@UltimateOtaku91 personally, I feel like they'll have a showcase of some kind before TGS where they reveal it. Then at TGS they'll have it playable on the show floor. I guess we shall see!
Would I love to have a more powerful PS5? Absolutely. But with such limited gaming time these days, it would be hard for me to justify the cost. Watch me buy one anyways though… 🙄☑️
@playstation1995 haha I feel you. I remember it being popular back in the 2000’s I think. word up son.
@SlipperyFish I do play many 60 FPS games but personally they really don't feel any different from 30 FPS for me. As for Wu Kong, we still don't know how the Xbox version will be handled but if they go the route of Baldur's Gate 3 then a PS5 pro might do well but if they only allow non parity sparingly it could mean multiplatform games can't be much better on PS5 Pro then PS5 cause of it. Obviously it is still dependent on each companies willingness to invest in performance modes for each console but still. The economic issues still are my main concern. Where the PS4 Pro came out during a good economic period and need to get better performance, The PS4 is still getting games and a PS5 Pro really doesn't have much value as a result.
@GreatAuk I'm really not so sure for the general public. For the hardcore gamer 60FPS and above would be great, but I don't think the general gaming audience cares all that much so graphics are the main selling point for most gamers. But, how much can the PS5 Pro improve graphics to sell to a general consumer like the PS4 Pro did.
@arzis100193 from what I've read, PS5 gets priority from developers over Xbox, hence why so many games perform better on PS5 at launch despite not being as powerful on paper. Xbox usually catches up after a few patches though. And because of this, I think developers will be prioritising PS5 and PS5 Pro so the series S isn't going to hold them back as it's more of a secondary thought.
PS5 Pro will have to hit 60fps in most games for people to even consider buying it. As for graphics, there isn't much more they can do other than resolution, and most games are running 4k or close to it, so I understand your point there. They can potentially increase textures and lighting but that adds a lot of complexity for the developer.
I agree with you as well that the PS4 needs to be left behind now. This generation has been slowed down by crossgen releases.
Personally I still would like a pro, because in 4 more years I know the releases are going to struggle on PS5 as we look towards PS6... unless this generation is going to last a lot longer than we thought
@SlipperyFish I don't want it to sound like I don't see a PS5 Pro as a decent idea, but I just don't see it making as big of a splash as PS4 Pro did. I also question the reason to do a Pro version as if i remember right from the Activision court documents both companies were looking at 2026 or 2027 as the next gen years.
I also feel like consoles need to differentiate themselves from PCs more and not go down the rabbit hole of regular upgrades.
I still remember seeing early gen PS1 games and then the late gen ones and seeing just how far we came. Same with PS2 and PS3.
Donkey Kong Country is still mind-blowing because of what it did to SNES and that required staying the course rather than constantly upgrading like SEGA did.
@arzis100193 Yeah I agree with all of your points really. We are really hitting a wall of diminishing returns in terms of performance, it will take a big increase in hardware to make a small increase in performance. I do hope the next gen will focus on making consoles smaller and more efficient, although I think that will require physical media to change.
One thing I don't like about this gen is having to pick between graphics and performance modes. Having a pro might do both, and I'd be happy with that.
I may get it next year sometime.
@InsertUsername OK. That's an entirely different point though.
My backlog of PS4 games is of such a size, I am currently still enjoying that good old device.
Yet maybe when this PS5 Pro gets released there might be some good deals on the horizon for the regular PS5.
I'll keep my eyes open and then probably, finally I'll get a PS5.
Because to me is was never a question if I'd buy one, just a question of when.
I’m just hoping if they announce at the Tokyo game show it’s not at silly o’clock in the UK with preorders going live straight away.
Because if it’s early hours in the morning in the UK, we know the scammers and bots will be snapping them all up, before we get out of bed and stand a chance of getting a preorder.
The PS5 preorders when up straight away at about midnight UK time, I was up so got one.
Sony please just think about this.
So, a PS5 Pro for what? I am reasonable happy with my PS5 but i am mostly playing old (PS4) games that look and run better. The PS5 Pro will run the PS5 games better than before? I am beginning to see a pattern and i’m not happy with it.
Day 1 for me. It's an upgraded ps5........
@Fiendish-Beaver MS have already confirmed they are making another generation of consoles as you mentioned, plus a potential handheld to sit alongside it. The next gen could launch as early as fall 2025 through to fall 2027 but I think they might go early for the next gen. I can tell Sony want this gen to run until 27/28 because they are still selling tons on PS4 versions of games on top of the PS5 stuff. The PS player base is bigger than ever.
@GigaGaia I know you wont believe me, but trust me it's coming ^_^
If it exists, I actually don’t see it selling well. The PS5’s power hasn’t been fully utilised as it is. Why bother with brute forcing games to try and run better? Devs should be optimising more instead. Plus unless they do a significant PS5 price drop, it’ll be one heck of an expensive console.
The rumours of 2026 for the next Xbox have been pretty consistent until recently, @darylb24, but in the immortalised words of Spencer, "Plans change", and I've not heard that 2026 date be mentioned for a couple of months now, which leads me to question whether plans have indeed changed. After Bond said that the next console was going to see a huge leap in performance, we've heard nothing more, which is fair enough, I guess when it's not due until 2026, but even the rumours seem to have died down...
That's my thoughts exactly, @PsBoxSwitchOwner. Were Microsoft to remain in the console business, this approach would be the best for us gamers; you'd have one manufacturer bring out a console one year, then 3 years later the other would, and then the first would do so again, and so on, and each time you would see a real improvement in console. By having both release a console within weeks of one another, they have pretty much continuously brought out much the same console as each other each time, and not always has the improvement been significant.
Unfortunately, I think it is maybe moot now. I'm not 100% certain that we will see another full blown console from Microsoft. A handheld, maybe, but one to rival the next PlayStation? I'm not so sure. I know Bond said there would be one, but with the way things have gone since she said that, I can foresee Microsoft pulling the plug on consoles entirely, so we may not even get a NeXtBox...
My friends brother's cousin's friend's sister's uncle who works at Nintendo said that a co-worker's friends' cousin's uncle works at Sony who said that Activision told him the Xbox Series X-X is coming soon, so I think it's proof that it's real!
@dschons I'd say it's on point. It's a waste of resources that could go into more game development rather than a mid-gen upgrade. If Sony thought the standard PS5 wasn't going to be enough power for what games they want to dish out then why not just have that on hand at launch? It's just another cash grab that gamers get duped into. Kinda like pre-orders.Just my opinion.
