Sony is allegedly keeping a close eye on the handheld market, following the surprise success of the PS Portal. Despite being panned pre-release in public opinion polls on sites like Push Square, the Remote Play accessory has gone on to become a bit of a sensation, blowing past the platform holder’s pre-release sales estimates – and topping revenue charts around the world. Obviously its $200 MSRP is playing a part in the latter, but it’s worth noting it’s competing against similarly priced accessories, like the DualSense Edge, which aren’t performing at anywhere near the same level.
Well-connected tipster Tom Henderson wrote on X (or Twitter) that the Japanese giant is paying “very close attention to the handheld market” in the aftermath of PS Portal’s success. There’s been a resurgence in interest in portables following the launch of the Steam Deck and a variety of other PC-based handhelds, like the ROG Ally. Despite the tidal wave of interest from enthusiasts, however, it’s perhaps worth remembering that the Steam Deck has sold fewer than 10 million units, which is less than the PS Vita.
There were unsubstantiated rumours earlier in the year from a random Russian individual that Sony was plotting a portable which would only play PS4 titles, but this was never corroborated by a reliable source despite widespread reporting from the media.
While we’ve always been fond of PlayStation’s handheld endeavours, we’re not convinced a large enough audience exists for a standalone device. The platform holder’s unlikely to develop games specifically for the portable, as this was one of the PS Vita’s biggest flaws, so it’d need to share a library with the PS5, which would result in a large, heavy, and expensive product. We can’t see the company limiting a hypothetical handheld to just PS4 software as indicated above, as it’s slowly trying to untether itself from that generation.
In our opinion, it’ll work on improving the overall PS Portal experience. Remote Play, in its current guise, is very good – but there are technologies it could invest in to reduce the latency, improve the image quality, and just generally enhance the overall experience. It’s here we think Sony’s research dollars are best spent moving forwards.

That's right everyone, it's finally happening!
The PlayStation Portable Classic Edition!
I still have both psp and vita. Both great systems. Would love a new handheld. : D
10,000 steam decks ! I thought there was more than that sold since nearly every game thread ive read has some "deckies" stating theyve played "game x" on deck.
@Jrs1 Less than 10 million, I believe, unless anyone can share data that says otherwise.
The number is not anywhere near as high as the enthusiast bubble would lead you to believe.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I preferred the PSP & PS Vita over the DS & 3DS.
So, of course, I'd love it if Sony gave handheld gaming another chance.
Nintendo needs more competition in that space anyway.
Reality is no one wants to create dedicated handheld games, so the only benefit of a new handheld would for it to only play games that are already on the consoles but natively. But like the steam deck it would struggle to run certain games properly unless ran at the lowest settings, but problem is playstation doesn't allow the editing of those settings. So developers would have to create another version to run on the Sony handheld which most wouldnt want to do. So if Sony do create a new handheld to play games natively then the amount of playable games would be very limited.
@DTfearTheBEARD wholeheartedly with you there. PSP/Vita fan for life.
I Want a handheld that will play my library of PS4 & PS5 games.
Then it would replace my RoG Ally and I would be free of windows 11.
I think I'd prefer a beefed up Steam Deck that could run the PS ports decently as well as a slew of other PC games. A dedicated handheld from Sony would take a lot of convincing for me personally.
I still play my vita and still have a big physical backlog (2nd hand games are so cheap where I live). I’d definitely be interested in a new handheld though. For me to buy it, it would need to be able to at least play the ps4 games in my account and be reasonably priced
Yep the minority are the loudest.
Sorry people but the Sony handheld just didn't sell and Playstation have an absolute shocking track record of supporting its on ventures even if they are a success. So what is the point.
The reason the ps portal is selling is due to having a library of games already on your ps5 and its a half decent way to play if you cant be on your ps5.
I.e if your visiting family and cant take your ps5 or its in the living room and someone is watching the telly and you can just chill in bed and progress your game.
A playstation dedicated handheld just isn't it.
Just look at the vita and the psvr2 both came off successful hardware and still wasn't supported by playstation.
Playstation motto is if it aint their main platform it doesn't matter
Says every fan rumour on & off XD I'd take a Evercade/Vita kind of console/handheld. If IPs were better.
Portal/PC handheld eyes, sure, (has a place but think weak potential, can deal with no handheld, just better companion device then it is) besides the Steam Deck/PC handhelds pie, even though they were there for Pocket PCs (2006 before the iPhone as business/tech enthusiasts & too expensive not just clunky, GPD/Aya Neo and others prior to Steam Deck existed).
They have a worse remote play app then Vita of resolution targets of 360/540p, now that feature is scrapped in modern one that phone/Portal/PC/PS4 app could HAVE of 480/720/1080 (console can why not) & no dual screen & boring device.
No separate versions of PSP, PS2, Wii, DS, GBA anymore. No one wants to. Same with Switch/Series S devs won't make a cut content version. It's always particles/visuals & other things scaled. They won't tone them down/cut modes.
Vita they cut WRC 3's career mode so glad I got the 360 version as to me the other modes are eh, ok but not as exciting.
But Juiced 2 on PS2 is like a DVD movie then Blu-ray with a fancy menu & ok mode I don't care for on HD. Prefer PS2/PSP then PS3/360/PC. Same with Force Unleashed on PSP/PS2/Wii. Sonic Unleashed PS2/Wii. Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands Wii is best version with it's Wii unique features. Avatar movie on Wii/PSP or Army of Two & others are fair.
Unless gimmicks/budget most go eh visuals/whatever. Series S/Switch cut content doesn't happen.
But most audience or devs/pubs have different expectations so we don't get those old unique versions anymore.
I didn't care for Java/Bedrock Minecraft parity but people do.
No PS Minis/Wiiware/DSWare. Sure Indie branding then. But I bought many mobile/PS Minis but more complete on Wii U. Can on Vita as store is up still.
Oh it HAS to be the remote play generic option to get people to buy it, oh the after social media/changes of using phones and other things as focus now, I'm sick of waiting 15+ years for audiences to get their act together and Sony doing whatever marketing and it just not working or not.
To go eh we could stretch our developers for a platform of VR/handheld we can't support and wasting money on their games. It won't happen.
If they cared they'd let the Portal be a dual screen device but it isn't so why bother. Allow multiplayer co-op/competitive. Offer Wii U/Playlink (smartphone party games, Hidden Agenda is a good one and not a generic quiz game but a choices mystery game) or PSVR style dual screens. If they cared they would regardless of niche sales/interest.
Sure they could restructure things better, marketing, 3rd parties will still abandon them which is why Sony gave up more than the sales/engines to a ARM device the Vita is then x86/cell one.
They wouldn't bother with a new eshop, just an existing one. They won't bother with scaling games. If it's a PS4 handheld maybe, but otherwise why would they bother.
I don't care about most of their IPs 2017+ so why would I support them. Retro of either Xbox/PS at this point or Switch and older Nintendo systems. I don't access the PS5/Series X I have, family do. I want nothing to do with them. Worst gen, boring games. Wake me up when they get interesting. Otherwise 5-8th gen backlog/pickups instead.
Sony has wasted too much time, has too high of expectations and offers nothing compelling & the mix of casual, multiplayer & hardcore appealing titles gets stretched thin. They need better balance.
Sony hasn’t been able to focus enough on first party titles for their main platform, so why bother with a handheld? So it can be abandoned like PSVR2 has been?
I’ll be more supportive of it when Sony can get a consistent release schedule of first party releases to verify that they can handle developing for multiple platforms at once, as was something they could do in generations past.
The Portal is exactly what I wanted. I’d be interested in an updated version of that down the road. OLED screen, further reduced latency, improved connectivity, Edge-like upgrades for the controller, friggin’ bluetooth(!), improved battery life. I don’t have any interest in a dedicated handheld with its own games.
How about a hybrid handheld that plays PS4 games natively and streams PS5 like the Portal?
Cough. Make a PC spec super console. Cough. Cough.
I don't really see much need for Sony to release a full on portable console at this point. It's not like a PSP3 could compete with the Switch — or even this new wave of handheld PCs. I DO think they should come out with a successor to the Portal that can natively play games along with stream them. Just make it so it can handle any PS1, PS2, PS3 (presuming a future emulator), PS4 (maybe with non-Pro specifications), PSP, and Vita (ditto with a presumption) games that are available on the PS Store.
Now I would buy that. Especially if it had the form factor of the Vita.
These days with chips like the Snapdragon X or the new Ryzen ai9 chips, paired with Res upscaling and frame generation ai software one can easily have a current gen experience on a portable device, but Sony slept on that as well.
Imagine a handheld system from Sony with a egpu TV dock.
If Sony were to release a new dedicated handheld it almost certainly can't be a unique device like the PSP and Vita was. It's simply unfeasible in this climate for both 1st and 3rd parties to add yet another device to support making games for and it'll barely be supported much like how PS VR2 has been.
The most sensible solution would be to just release a portable PS4 but even that has its own complications. For example, people with physical libraries would be locked out because obviously a portable device has no way to read Blu-Ray discs. This move is also a double-edge sword of prolonging the life of the PS4, so we'll continue to get cross-gen releases in perpetuity if you want this device actually supported with new releases. In the end is it really worth the effort?
Tough one, I'd like to get the next switch for my son, however Nintendo will need to break the voodoo they have as all their successor consoles never do as well as the predecessor. I'm interested to see if xbox will bring out a portable, as a handheld with gamepass seems real appealing. I've also been contemplating a steam deck as I used to primarily game on handhelds for a while, namely the PSP/Vita/DS/3DS so I will buy something. Just don't know if id go back to a PlayStation handheld with how quick they dropped Vita support
After they abandoned the Vita in the fashion as they did I don't know if I really want a dedicated handheld like that again unless I am sure that they are going to really try with it.
I'd rather they spent time and money on new games than a portable. I did enjoy the PSP way back, but those days are over.
My issue with the Switch and PC handhelds (Steam deck, Asus Ally) is they're massive. They're not really that portable. The PSP/Vita or GameBoy/DS I could put in my pocket.
So I do think there is a gap in the market for a genuinely portable console.
If it could run PS4 games without needing any sort of developer optimisation, I would be 100% all for it. Although that would mean we never get any new releases for it
They can look all they want. After what they did to the vita, there is zero chance i will buy another.
Nintendo has the right idea with the switch though. If it can be both, it's better.
What suprise success was that then?
If they are going on sales, I hope that's net sales, as most people I know through internet forums like Facebook took theirs back when they realised that the updates they hoped for like ability to stream streams were never going to come.
Like the psvr2, it was a conspicuous consumption item that people used to flex over others, only to find out it had little support or real function.
I got a laptop for mobile gaming.
If we can play our entire PS5/PS4 library of games meaning we can take the games we buy on the console to go at no extra cost I don't see how anyone says no to that! It probably won't have its own exclusives but it doesn't need them.
I’m a bit disappointed that neither MS nor Sony have opted for a hybrid console like Nintendo, except intended for more powerful with the dock featuring a GPU component and the portable featuring a RDNA based CPU.
They should have paid close attn to Switch's Success
Another issue with making a portable version of PS4 would be the save file of each game being separate from that of its PS5 version, which would prevent seamlessly switching between playing on this hypothetical portable and playing on the PS5 (like you can with the Portal) unless you're OK with playing the PS4 version of the game on PS5, which would mean missing out on PS5 improvements over PS4, like better performance and image quality, DualSense features, 3D audio, etc.
Nah bro. They'll botch it in some way. Even if there is no way to mess it up, Sony will find it. Mind you, I still have my og PSP and two oled Vitas.
Not interested in Sony's anything other than mainline console.
Immediately decided not to go for PSVR2 after owning two PSVR.
Sony. Will. Drop. The. Ball. Every. Single. Time.
Every single time.
I am waiting for Switch 2.
I respect the PS Portable (never owned one myself) and I loved my PS Vita but lets face it, the idea of home console companies making a new dedicated handheld with its own games nowadays is practically dead and buried.
I have minor interest in the PS Portal but I rather prefer Sony makes a follow-up to it then make a Vita successor that they just support with minimal interest and then throw it in the bin in the long run. Its bad enough the Sony of today is barely (to say the least) supporting their own first-party IPs for the actual PlayStation home console brand.
I want one of these but I'm concerned about support. Like it will somehow just not function after some update. I still play my Vita a lot.
EDIT: Oh right. No Bluetooth! Nope!
@TheDudeElDuderino I'd buy a "PSP Classic" handheld in a heartbeat. But they won't do that.
Don't use strange cards for saving the games which are extremely expensive. Make it not to expensive so no 4K on a small screen which also drains the battery really fast and backwards compatibility with trophies support.
No, they would abandon it and not support it like they always do with these things like the psp/psvr1 and 2 etc
Well, I am not in to that, but AMD has the hardware to do it very good. The latest APUs are quite good so from hardware point now might be the right time to do one that runs standard games, just with lower res, utiliza fsr and so on.
It's basically what the Portal should have been, have it able to stream PS5 games but be able to natively play PS4 and the recent PS classics. As much as I'd love a fully dedicated handheld, I see no scenario where Sony support it properly and it'll end up like Vita and PSVR2 where they hope others will fill out it's library for them
@LowDefAl Nah you can blame the Vita memory cards for that.
@somnambulance @sakai @somnambulance a new handheld doesn't require exclusive games. The ps portal has already proven that.
@anon_pel222 and done what exactly? Deliver an underpowered hybrid that can't run most 3rd party or any ambitious 1st party games? Nintendo may be able to get away with that, but Sony with experiences like God of War and The Last of Us surely wouldn't.
@Tecinthebrain true, but a portable and affordable ps5 is completely unrealistic.
Still got my PSP 3000 and slim Vita. If the PS5 sales are slowing up, maybe Sony want to look at the situation again.
The amount of positive messaging surrounding a PSP 3 (Vita was 2) was absolutely massive. The amount of disappointment when it turned out to be a PS5 viewer was equally as massive.
We want a PSP 3 - whether Sony give us one, that's one for the bean counters to crunch but I'm sure Cerny could knock one up.
As an aside, indies love handhelds (3DS, PSP, Vita, Switch) so you may well get an increase in decent, fun oddball titles.
@sanderson72 online enthusiasm =/= sales (unfortunately)
@naruball True but I think there is a definite market for a new PSP (keep the name simple, everyone knows what it is).
The problem is that Sony's multi-million dollar productions these days would not transfer onto a handheld easily. It was easier in the PS2 & PS3 days but maybe taking PS4 code would be a decent start for a next-gen handheld.
Unfortunately, I could see New Sony 'doing a Vita' and abandoning it should the PS6 be a success.
The problem is they would have to make all the games, baring some Switch ports maybe depending on the power of the switch 2, but that will never be the big hitters which are Nintendo exclusive. It’s not like PSVR2 where pretty much all Quest games will be ported leading to a very healthy release schedule without much Sony investment.
As much as I love my Vita I'd be hesitant to buy a new full handheld with how PS treated the Vita, it deserved so much better than it got... but if it had solid support I would be very much inclined to get one.
Heck yeah sony. Just look at the steam deck and rog ally. I don’t need that kind of power, maybe a system that able to run 60fps ps4 graphics is enough for me. I just want new portable console from sony and make it fully digital like deck (ex psp/ps vita owner) and i love my steam deck so much.
@Mintie agreed with you. Amazing handheld but poor support from sony.
So far I’ve enjoyed my Portal. It’s not perfect, but it serves a purpose for when I either don’t have access to the TV or wish to play a game on the couch or in bed. With the latency and lag, even though it’s surprisingly small, it’s still not the way I want to play a Soulslike or kinetic action game that has high risk for missed timing of a button input. It’s ideal for more laid back games where timing is a little more forgiving, which there are still tons of options there. I’d say well over 50% of the games I play would be fine on the Portal, but I know some people only play Soulslikes, fighting games , or FPS so mileage may vary per individual. With a little improvement in latency even those types of games will be perfectly fine.
In addition to shoring up the quality of latency and stability of the streaming, I’d like to see them develop a way that it can stream directly from the cloud. That would be great to not have to be tethered to the actual PS5. I have no idea if that’s even possible or not.
@TheMightyImp2 is that why it's constantly out of stock? People purchasing and returning theirs?
@naruball The portal streams the existing games on the PS5. Unless it’s a 1-to-1 PS5 handheld then, we’d have the PlayStation Series S, basically. No thanks for that.
@get2sammyb I think part of that could be price, mixed with PC gamers being a picky bunch (not that there's anything wrong with that). I can say as someone who recently bought a steam deck from a friend that its a fantastic handheld and plays most modern games really well. If Sony coukd create a handheld with that kind of power I think they would be on to a winner
@somnambulance My point is that the ps portal showed it can be successful without having exclusive games. Same with steamdeck. No one realistically expects Sony to support a new handheld with exclusive games. Not even Nintendo can do that any more, hence the switch.
The fact the Steam Deck has sold several million is massive in the first place! Before it came along, the PC console handhelds from the likes of Aya Neo or GPD were only selling in the thousands! Valve has literally thrown a hand grenade into the marketplace!
And they have the money as do Asus and Lenovo to make refresh new models regularly. But these handhelds already have a humongous games collection, HUGE collection readily available to run on them.
Sony is a different platform, it doesn’t have the scope to build a dedicated handheld system and entice enough developers for it. But its remote play has been pretty darn reliable and good for a while now, it was genius to make the Portal, as it proved people love having a dedicated handheld, and it’s cheap enough to be presented as a gift.
It’s gathered quite the following now, like the Steam Deck and other PC handhelds.
Nintendo had had the biggest success though for sure, but, to make the Switch a success it overhauled its entire business, and scrapped any dedicated home or portable console departments, they don’t exist now and they are all in on the one device. And it was a genius device that is just so seem less going from handheld to desktop mode. It’s such a successful model it’s why the next console is just continuing the platform. Not reinvent ting the wheel.
I think Sony should stick to their guns, the PS5 is more powerful than these handhelds for now, and it offers the console plug and play experience. It should just release an updated Portal if anything, with better WiFi and an OLED maybe, so long as it doesn’t increase that price point as it’s been key to its success. But its owners just want that continued plug and play experience on the road of the better more powerful hardware. No cloud involved either.
Since the Switch handheld gaming has had quite the revolution, and it’s only set to continue. But like Nintendo, I do not believe Sony has the resources for two dedicated teams, one for handheld and one for home console, so like Nintendo stick to the current formula as it’s working well. It’s simple to use your hardware teams to design a handheld remote play device, it’s much harder to then make a dedicated handheld and support it with software like a home console.
The fact that Sony has a cloud streaming service in PS+ Premium but the Portal can’t cloud stream should tell you all you need to know about their handheld support. That’s all they need, a Portal Pro that streams from the cloud. Maybe throw the Discord and Twitch apps on there to make it gamer friendly.
Stadia didn’t fail b/c of the technology but b/c they were trying to get people to buy $60 games to stream, which was a ridiculous non-starter business model. PS+ Premium already cloud streams so they already have that business model. They don’t need a PSP 3 in a digital streaming world.
Nah, I already have a collection of PS2/3 and Vita games on my Ally. Ditto for all the Sony games available on Steam. As for the ROG Ally you can get one used for about $350 which is rather affordable. Sure, the battery life holds it back but the new Ally X does not have that flaw. Sony would have a bit of trouble selling a handheld with limiting software (unlike Linux and Windows) in the market where Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go already rule. The Portal is nothing like those anyway as a streaming only device.
I hope Sony invests in this. I really like my PS Portal and if Sony can find a way to play games natively on it or newer version of it that would be great.
@naruball I meant that the PS5 games would be patched to work on the portable like the rumors mentioned. The Steam Deck can already run several games PS5 games like Forbidden West perfectly so it's not impossible.
I would be happier if they'd really interesting in making another handheld console. I have both PSP and Vita for years. I'm still playing one of them whenever I'm in workplace or on the bus/train. I don't really into PS Portal because its require the network, so its completely useless in the bus/train. Hope they intend to make the handheld console that allow us play with or without the network. Included UMD games or something like this. I'll keep my eyes on the news about it!
@Tecinthebrain I see. Thanks for the clarification. I still think that they're 2 difference audiences. Most playstation fans simply aren't willing to spend as much money as those who go for high end PCs and steam decks. Price has always been an issue with hardware (psvita, PSVR1, PSVR2, etc).
I would love a new handheld. Actually they don't have to do much. Improve on the Portal, keep the remote play, maybe a better screen and add a SSD so you can take games with you. Done!
I love the VITA, it's my favourite handheld console of all time. A successor would be amazing.
Never thought I'd see a day when Xbox fans are all about "yes, we need stand alone hardware, streaming won't do!" While PS fans insist "Stand alone hardware sucks, we only want streaming!"
I'm interested to see what Sony bring to the table but I'm not interested in having a portable ps5. If I really wanted to play my ps5 games if I was away from home for more than a few days I'd just take the ps5 with me. The ps5 is for me when I'm home besides I'd find it hard to play a ps5 when I'm out at the golf course 🤣.
Uncharted golden abyss on the vita still is to this day one of, if not the best handheld games ever. Still rivals some switch games released 2024
As long:
1. Have tons of kids games choices.
2. Can be docked like Switch.
3. Backward compatible with PSP UMD and PS Vita cartridge.
4. More physical games support.
5. Longer battery life.
6. Support any micro SD card for storage.
Then I will give it a try.
@Anti-Matter We were waiting for a 'clip-on' UMD drive for the Vita since that came out. Rumours were that was what the extra port was for on top of the OG Vita?
So many great games stuck on UMD...
Battery life - well the Vita Slim lasted for about 6 hours between charges so I think we would see an increase on that.
Weird thing is the PSP 2000/3000 can connect to a TV via a component cable - a feature that Sony removed from the Vita.
@sanderson72
I still wonder how do I play my PSP 3000 when being connected to TV?
Do I still have to use my PSP 3000 as the controller and playing my PSP games very close to my TV?
@Anti-Matter Yes, you need a l-o-n-g Component cable and check that you have the 5 component sockets (3 video, 2 audio) on the back of the TV - either that or you'd need a Component to HDMI converter.
