Considered one of the great horror games of all time, Silent Hill 2 on PS2 packed in plenty of scares per square inch but was a relatively short game, clocking in at around 8-9 hours for a standard playthrough. To give you some idea of how much bigger Bloober Team's remake is, the developer has revealed that a first-time playthrough could easily take twice that, more if you want to do and see everything.
On X, Bloober creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart noticed VGC journalist Jordan Middler enjoying the opening hours of his Silent Hill 2 preview, wishing him well on the following "12+ hours of the game." When a fan chimed in to confirm the 12-hour runtime, Lenart revealed that an average playthrough will take most players 16-18 hours and 20+ to find all of Silent Hill's secrets.
You can check out our preview of the game right here. If you missed it, Konami released a haunting new story trailer as well. There's not much longer to wait now; Silent Hill 2 arrives on PS5 on 8th October.
Are you looking forward to Silent Hill 2? Are you surprised to see how the game's runtime has grown? How do you think all that extra time will be spent? Let us know in the comments section below.

I’m there day one and so damn excited. People give Bloober crap all the time but I’ve always had faith in them since I like their games especially Observer which I loved and wish they would do a psvr 2 version of. Blair Witch was the only one I didn’t truly get on with it was just ok but the rest I really enjoyed. I would rank the ones I played in order of 1.Observer 2.The Medium 3. Layers of Fear remake for ps5 and then Blair Witch dead last but Silent Hill 2 remake might take over that number one spot or at least the second spot.
Bigger isn’t always better and I feel like the gaming industry has forgotten this, but I will admit I’m cautiously intrigued for this one. I’m really starting to wonder if I can fit this one into my schedule for the rest of the year. Jeez, October is packed…
im looking forward to this and an optimistic for a good AA blooper game.
16-18 hours is pretty on par for a game like this, and I'm totally okay with it
A lot of people do forget sometimes just how much shorter games were on average 20yrs ago.
8-15 hours are pretty standard for a survival horror game especially for the 1st playthrough. Any longer than the game will reach "overstay their welcome" teritory where devs keeps adding fillers like unnecessary backtracking or fighting the same boss for the 3rd / 4th time.
The last couple of trailers/showcases have convinced me that the game will be solid, I will be buying it day one, Still finding it very cringe worthy that there is an early access version for a single player game.....
Good to hear! They've added just enough new content to reach the right length for this game, not too short or too dragged out.
If I can't beat this in like two hours and get the mad dog ending then there's going to be trouble.
Hopefully it is really scary
@Oram77 Hopefully the review embargo drops before the early access period! It feels like that’s a shady way to get people to purchase before reviews go out. “Pay more, know less” is hopefully not a strategy that persists in the industry.
Not sure if this is a good game, unnecessary padding has the potential to be detrimental. If it's quality new content then it's good, but adding length for the sake of length isn't a good thing.
I am SO excited for this, had it preordered since… I forget. My gut tells me this is going to be Bloober’s moment.
Radio! What’s going on with that radio?!
Cool.thats fine by me.silen hill 2 looks n.i.c.e on that new gameplay.word up son
@caiol92 It's weird that they didn't start with the first game that one is nowhere to be seen on a modern system.
@PegasusActual93
I think its been happening gradually over a lot of years, maybe accelerating with generation changes, and is probably in part due to larger media / faster download speeds. For example within a single series RE Code veronica was long for a RE game, then RE4 even longer. Even the remakes of 2 & 3 were made longer than the originals, even if by the standards of a few years ago they were pretty short games.
I think it is something that has crept up and up, and which most of us gamers from the 80's/90's just forget.
@InsaneWade @caiol92 Thanks for the responses and i totally forgot the RE2 remake good eye. Man I would love to see RE1 to get the same treatment.
@dark_knightmare2 I'll have to agree. I liked all of the ones you mentioned but thought Blair Witch was poor. Probably more than you because I'll go as far as saying it flat out sucked and felt like they just tacked the Blair Witch title on some random game for sales. I disliked it so much I'll never play it again, not even if it received a VR release.
@Flaming_Kaiser Imo I don't feel a second remake of the first one is necessary.
@Almost_Ghostly oh no I should have clarified I didn’t even finish Blair Witch which isn’t even a long game so that should tell you something lol. It was the most boring, blandest game I’ve played in awhile though i will say I liked the dog and the graphics were pretty good
@Almost_Ghostly Let's agree to disagree then. I would love to see RE1 as a full-fledged remake and Silent Hill.
